WHAT’S THE BEST THING ABOUT SURFING?
That's a loaded question for sure haha! There are so many elements and experiences that come with suring that make every surfer coming back for more over and over again. The best thing about suring is getting barreled! I have some really magical mental pictures that are forever stuck in my memory and those are while getting barreled or tubed. One in particular that sticks with me and how that moment in time felt like it froze and I just felt like I was completely in a state of just being while disappearing behind sheets of energy that look like stained glass windows of gold and blue as I was riding the wave directly into the sunrise. This was a good size wave one summer morning from a tropical swell. There was nobody else out and it's those moments that you paddle back out with the biggest smile on your face and your soul just echoes “thank you God”.
two
WHAT’S THE WORST THING ABOUT SURFING?
There’s a feeling that leets you after each session. You get it and then it's gone. You constantly chase that!
three
WHAT DO YOU EAT BEFORE AND AFTER GOING SURFING?
If I know the waves are going to be really good early in the morning and stay up the entire day, I will eat a massive pasta dinner the night before with lots of protein. I’ll hydrate as much as I can too and load up on potassium. I’ve been known to not get out of the water for hours at a time. I mean like 5 hours or more! Then, that morning I’ll keep my breakfast light with just a few eggs, avocado toast, a banana, and coconut water. Then post surf session is a big meal with lots of protein.

WHERE DO YOU FIND INSPIRATION WHEN YOU GET DOWN OR ARE RUNNING LOW ON ENERGY?
If the waves are really good I’ll literally surf till my arms are noodles and I can’t paddle anymore! I get so excited and I can’t stop haha! It takes hours of nonstop waves to get me gassed.

WHERE IS YOUR FAVORITE SURF SPOT? LOCAL AND WORLDWIDE
My favorite spot locally would be Holiday Isle when the sand is right with solid waves. Worldwide, I’d have to say this unnamed spot in the Maldives. It was the most beautiful water and super fun waves with not a soul in sight! Basically what you dream of as a surfer.
six
BEST SURFING ADVICE YOU HAVE BEEN GIVEN? Know your equipment! Being on the right board is a game changer. seven
WHAT TYPE OF BOARD DO YOU RIDE? DID YOU NAME YOUR BOARD?
IF SO, WHAT IS ITS NAME AND WHY? I ride several different short boards. I have 11 boards which all are different. I get custom shapes from Jason Feist in Santa Barbara, CA. I also ride Fire Wires and Mayhems. No, I do not name my boards.
eight
WHEN DID YOU START SURFING? HOW OLD WERE YOU?
I started suring at the end of 6th grade so I was around 12/13 years old.
nine
WHAT IS A PERFECT WAVE? AND WHAT IS THE BIGGEST OR LONGEST WAVE YOU HAVE RODE? A perfect wave to me would be a wave that is around three to four feet overhead that breaks on a point as an A-frame being able to go left or right. It will have a barrel section from the take off that stays walled up with multiple barrels sections and parts of the wave to do a variety of turns. Also, the water is 84 degrees Fahrenheit with light offshore winds all day long! Longest wave I’ve ridden would have to be in the Maldives on a right hand reef point. My legs were burning! I’m not sure the actual biggest wave in terms of size.
ten
WHAT ARE YOU AFRAID OF? WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE COLOR? YOUR FAVORITE FOOD? I’m afraid of injuries! A bad back or knee injury can really debilitate your suring. I’ve done pretty good so far staying healthy and strong! Favorite color would be deep turquoise. Favorite food would be Italian or Indian.
artist too short bio
My name is Harley Van Hyning and I’m an artist based in Destin, Florida. I’ve been around art my entire life as my mother is an artist. It's something I’ve always loved and appreciated. I focus primarily on the Japanese art form of Gyotaku. That translates in Japanese to "ish print" or "ish rub". I have always loved the creatures of the sea! Growing up, on Saturday mornings I would be glued to watching Nat Geo or Discovery Channel instead of cartoons. The art form is really special as it brings both my love for art and the creatures of the sea into one. I painted my irst ish almost seven years ago which was a pompano. I started painting ish I caught and got obsessed with it! I never once thought I would actually be an artist. It’s a great surprise in life and just goes to show you never know how life is going to turn out.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
Really everything but, the unchanging support of my mother is the best inspiration I could ask for. In anything I’ve ever set myself towards, she taught me that the only binds a person has are the ones they create, and that mistakes are lessons you will create as well. two
WHAT IS YOUR BEST FEATURE? Some would beg to differ but, I really love my birthmark on my right cheek. I think it resembles a heart. Others say an upside down tornado. The elders in my family always would say it was a kiss from an angel before I was sent down to earth.
three
WHY DID YOU WANT TO GET INTO MODELING?
I chose the modeling world becauseIneededtostepoutof the whirlwind of my everyday work life. The feeling of being something like a crystal stuck underground never to be seen and appreciated was getting old. I worked in the administrative industry for over ive years and most of us know what that’s like (not the best places to be proud of).
four
DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE COLOR OR FOOD AND WHY?
SEAFOOD! If you know me then you know why there’s an exclamation point after that word. I am for sure a foodie. I mean, it’s basically the healthiest meat and there’s so many different ways to cook it! I’m just saying, what food do you know of that can be eaten raw and still is delicious?!
five
IF YOU COULD DO ANY TYPE OF MODELING ANYWHERE WHAT WOULD IT BE?
Seeing as though I plan to get deeper into not only swimsuit, glamour, promotional, and now print modeling but I really want to start becoming a it model too. I feel that would be a great way to fuel income in-between photo shoots and provide a better understanding of my craft on other planes.

I’ve often been asked what started me on this journey of creating what I do... I can’t say I could pinpoint one moment or even a particular place that this road started, only that it happened as suddenly and as fantastically as anything involving doll heads and whimsical taxidermy would be expected to start.
As a child I was always fascinated by the darker genre of art and the fairy-like works of people like Walter Potter. It wasn’t until I was an adult I was really able to monetize on that aspect of my own personal art; starting in the form of buying three vintage doll heads from an old warehouse in Texas after my car had broken down. These were the irst hanging planters that made their debut at a local coffee shop and sold shortly after, giving me that much needed push to continue to pursue a unrealized dream. Old dolls have always
carried a stigma of fear around them (I’ll admit I’ve always been terriied of them as well) but I wanted people to see them turned into something that wasn’t the typical ‘bloody doll head with a light’ and really see the beauty that fear can be turned into. From there I gladly jumped into the hole of macabre art and oddities that you see displayed. I also enjoy incorporating my love of drawing and painting in many of the pieces I design. As well as putting to use the newer skills I’ve picked up, wood working, and metalsmithing. It’s also rewarding to make custom pieces for those who have an idea what they want, but just need help turning their vision into a tangible piece of art! I continually strive to create fantastical and often unplanned marriages of art mediums that I hope bring joy, feeling, and maybe a dash of fear to peoples hearts.
Her distinctive artistic style bears a marriage of unconventional materials, transforming the macabre into a unique experience, exonerating the hidden beauty within the weird. Exhibit currently can be seen in The Sound Cafe at Enlightened Studios in Fort Walton Beach. Be sure to follow Kate on Instagram @arcana_rende
evading by kate szucs
You evade me
It’s quite sickening
Whenever I feel I may have the tiniest of grasp you leap out ahead of me Leaving my lailing ingers grabbing at empty ideas
Sometimes you sneak up on me in the night Laying outstretched beside my body Caressing my dreams like a tender lover
Sometimes your whispers breath harsh into my conscious Leaving only ragged wisps of words and pictures for me to cling so desperately too when I wake
Sometimes you come so fast and so urgently I have no time to catch everything you scream for me to hear
My ingers work bloody and blistered trying to form you
To touch your essence I paint my hands with you
Your heart beating with mine Your veins so intricate and subtle Captured late at night on a small paper napkin Or during the quick breaks I see you on a paper bag No form in my head Just guiding my hands against the rough brown to shade a part of you that I hadnt seen only the morning before
Stop running from me please!
Your the only love I have left The only part of this life that brings any hint of color to my world of black charcoals and white crayon
Im as useless as a wing with no feathers
Flailing until I paint them with your guiding hands With you I can soar above these storm clouds I can not only feel the rain but I can form each droplet that dapples my skin into a word that translates the moist that clings
If only to capture the sunlight refracting off the dew drops of a lower petal I’ve sold you my soul
You’ve entrapped this broken heart of mine Sometimes holding it so gently I only feel the whisper of your breath against it Sometimes crushing the tiny fragments into further dust that blows away with the gusts of every changing nature
Bleed into me
Like water color and acrylic We are so different Your oiled canvas cannot hold the ink that swells from my veins
these feeble attempts I make to capture you must amuse You laugh at me I know it When my ingers shake and the lines askew When I just inish what I may have a hint of pride in Until I see you lurking and I know I must have ruined a hue
Your smirk sickens me Yet I still yearn for your approval So dance with me Sway in and out of this love and hate I feel when I inally grab hold of you with this paintbrush
These tiny lickers of sunlight and electric storms These condescending lectures from you These loving embraces of pure satin and black velvet I’ll paint a picture of your love I’ll write a poem of your hate The desperation I feel for you None can satiate

it's time by jim clark
It’s time…
It’s time to write… …not time to make excuses, not time to complain. It’s time to break out of your shell, quit playing, and doing the same ol' same.
It’s time to relect… …not just reliving the past. Look ahead to the future, prove to yourself that you learn from your mistakes, mistakes from being an ass, move forward, and leave that "you" in the past.
It’s time to let go… …let go of the things that are holding you back. Let the real you out, the you that you know better than anyone else can, the boy, the girl, the woman or the man.
It’s time to start… ...because if you don’t you’ll never inish. It’s like writing a book, a poem or creating a piece of art - writing the irst word or placing the irst brush stroke can be the hardest part.
With all that said… …it’s time to follow your heart, and listen to what’s in your head
What do you have to lose? A little time or some self esteem? It may not be easy but it’s up to you to choose.
It’s time to make time… …schedule time with your thoughts, enjoy time with your creative side, and then to share what you discovered with this time.
Share yourself with friends, family, and the world!
It’s “your” time…

soft meditation by gavin mcnaught
What I call “soft” meditation, can provide rest, rejuvenation, and calm. This way of meditating is not about building mental strength and discipline. Instead, it’s about centering yourself from the weights of the world.
To prepare, grab a nice beverage. Turn your phone notiications on silent. Music can sometimes be used, but I recommend music of a spiritual nature. Set an alarm if necessary. Candles and incense are optional additions.
Once you are ready, sit in a comfortable position. For this style, I recommend a nice chair or couch. Meditation often recommends a straight back. I will stress comfort over perfection. Resting your back against the couch or chair is perfectly okay.
Now, rest your hands in a position that feels right for you. I may do a separate article on Buddhist and Taoist meditation hand positions. For now, the hands may rest comfortably on your knees with the palms face up.
Finally, the meaty part. Take a deep breath and close your eyes. Notice anything you are thinking about, any conversations you are having with yourself in your head. As you notice you are having these conversations, try to disengage with them. You are likely to re-engage with them, likely very soon. This is normal, especially in the beginning.
The goal should not be not to think. The goal should be not to think hard. Aim to not think about anything stressful. Often, we are using our brains at a high capacity. This requires a lot of energy and can be stressful. The goal of this style of meditation is to give yourself a break. Don’t think about things you don’t want to do but have to. Try not to have dificult or stressful conversations with yourself. Don’t try to solve problems in your life.
Another component is centering your energy. This is more dificult to describe. This element is more of “magic” and less of meditation. Practices such as qigong (tai chi), can help in learning to manipulate your own energy. I will describe the basics of energy work at another time.
For now, imagine your body is made of lowing water. Take a moment to see and feel the water lowing throughout you. Now, imagine it all lowing into one place. Imagine it lowing to your hands. Do you feel anything, perhaps a tingling of the hands? This takes time and practice to learn.
Continue dropping stressful-though dialogues, and try to focus your energy into a solid location, in order to ground yourself. Once you are ready, get up and resume your day. Feel free to come back to the practice whenever you are stressed or need rejuvenation.

DID YOU LIKE THIS ISSUE?
This was my irst issue of amuse magazine and I'm looking forward to creating the next one. Hopefully you enjoyed the photos, poems, and the stories as well. Let me know what you think.
WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE IN ONE OF MY NEXT ISSUES?
WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE MORE OR LESS OF?
I would like to see a lot less Covid in the world. I would like the opportunities to get to go to large music events again. Plus, I'm looking forward to warmer weather already because I would rather be too hot than cold.
Even if it's "you" that you want to see in an issue, I may be able to make it happen. Upcoming ideas include wedding images, crazy couple photos, your face here photos, and many ideas that haven't popped up in my head yet. I want to include more writings of other people... short poems or song lyrics, who knows? Email me your thoughts or poems and we can consider it. Send it to: jim@juststay.com with subject title "amuse me".
LET ME KNOW AND THANKS. Yes... I am asking you 'cause I have learned that if you don't ask, nobody does anything. Share some of your thoughts or comments by emailing me at jim@juststay.com.
DID
YOU LEARN ANYTHING OR JUST ENJOYED FLIPPING THROUGH THE PAGES?
Creating a mini magazine is fun but does take time to put it together the way you want it. Creating a low and incorporating the style that matches your personality. I usually remember what someone said to me "I done did learn some time ago that I should have learned better english but there is always time to learn more until there's no more time". I will learn to do better. I look back at my old photos and wonder what was I trying to do, but we used the images in ads and they seamed to work for our clients.
