who?

Who is this guy? Well, as far as how I met him it was at one

of the "Creatives Meet Ups" at SoWal House in Rosemary Beach. Jorge came into the room dressed as he always does with his own fashion style and swag. We introduced ourselves to each other and talked to discover more about each other. He told me he was from Havana, Cuba, and his family left due to political instability. After a short stop in South Florida, they landed in New Orleans to find and grow to love its diverse Spanish, French, and Afro-American cultures. He said when he was young he loved to draw. And Jorge's mom, a skilled seamstress made woman's clothing and Mardi Gras costumes for a select number of clients. This gave him an opportunity to let his imagination go wild to create and share his drawings with her. After attending Tulane University and receiving his Bachelor's degree in Petroleum Geology, Jorge went to work in Oil and Gas litigation. He quickly realized his yearning for artistic expression while he continued to sketch as a hobby. One day, he read an article in Time magazine about how famous designers such as Calvin Klein and Donna Karan started their careers at Parsons

Twenty20 Rage has spread much like this COVID, I don't know if anyone has even noticed, We're all divided, misguided, with a fire inside us that's been ignited, Isolated from those we love, fighting over masks and pairs of gloves, Stand six feet back or else you'll get smacked, Do they not realize that requires contact? I'm worried about the people, as I watch them through my peepholes, Wearing my mask means I follow the sheep-folk, But not wearing my mask makes me an asshole, Are we living in fear? Or are we just trying to show we care? Politics feel as real as Hollywood, Always doing what they want, not always what they should, I'd change it all if I could, If teamwork can make the dream work, Then it can make the world work, We're all here to coexist, The Christians beside the atheists, The rich beside the poor, The saint next to the whore, Bore out the labels and we're all merely humans that is putting ourselves in each other's shoes less, Life is no black and white, just a matter of gray, Our hands, the creator, our lifetime the clay, So how impactful are the words we say?

Violet is...

and

...someone I think you should know. When I first met her I could sense the positive energy she projected through her voice. The way she described what she did and what she wanted to do next was motivating and inspiring. We first met at an artist’s open and discussed what we both thought about the work on display. Talked about the artist process and asked each other the "how did they do that?" questions. Afterward, we were introduced to a few more people and everyone shared their stories. All of us answered what we did for a living, if we were artists, what media we work in, and even who told us about the event. All enjoyed adult refreshments, shared social media contacts, and shortly thereafter said goodnight, and left the gallery to other places. Violet told me she worked at "Curate" an art gallery in Rosemary Beach. I asked her if she had been to SoWal House and she said she loved that place as well. A few days go by and our paths cross again at SoWal House. I was taking photographs of Jackson Rohm's performance as well as candid shots. Violet and I said "hey" and I asked her if she wanted to get some photos taken I wouldn’t mind taking them. We said we would connect to find out a good time to schedule the shoot. The images of Violet featured in this issue were from that shoot. It was a chilly "cold" damp late afternoon but ended up being a fun mini-session. She was game to put on her model face to make it happen and she succeeded. We are looking forward to doing a spring shoot when it gets back to Florida weather again.

I'm an artist who can be found most times somewhere on 30A with my dog and the people I love... probably drinking a coffee. ... I discovered my love for acrylic paint, pretty ladies, and poppy colors. In most of my work you can find the curves of beautiful women surrounded by hues of complimentary colors. Oftentimes I find myself inspired by romance, love, and the power of femininity. iwokeUPto comparision

by Lucinda Christian Bunn

I woke up at 3:51 the other morning to the shit talk going on in my head. The night before, I had seen the latest issue of amuse magazine. The issue’s theme was about being women and how we own our power. Asked to contribute a piece, I was excited and up for the task. I worked hard to put a long lifetime into 350 words and was proud of my finished work. That is, until I saw it next to the others and their stories of strength and power. I abandoned myself and quickly went into comparison mode.” She is more articulate. I look so old in my photos. Look at her beautiful art. AND she is a good writer too!?!” I have had great success in recent times NOT going into judgment of myself or others. But if left to snowball, and I am critical or jealous of me and others, “they have ‘it’ Lucinda, you don’t” is the driving force within. That never ends well. There's always someone better at “it” - someone more skilled, someone smarter, someone richer, someone prettier, someone younger, someone more successful. This reaction was painful. A red flag that I was in trouble. That critical voice wants to keep my life small. “Let’s just stay home. Watch Netflix. That way, no one can hurt us.” It prefers safety and isolation to connection and life. It is terrified that if I leave it behind, it will no longer exist. And at times, it has wanted to take me out-for good. And without buying me dinner first. Somewhere in my youth and childhood, I received a

compassion caring creative

master’s degree in hating myself. I am the youngest in a family of

five gifted, creative people. A father, successful in show business, a mother successful in fashion, two show business/journalist siblings

with 6 Emmys and a Peabody between them. And I spent two thirds

of my life internalizing the notion that they had all the talent and I had none.

The truth was, I had a lot of mental health challenges. This is what I told myself. “Hey, look at this! You can be good at being sick.

The only cost of tuition is to practice believing that you are damaged goods, destined to someday live in your car. You got this!”

This is how I shut down the shit talk in my head that morning, speaking these words intentionally and out loud to myself. “Lucinda, that woman who is such a gifted artist and writer, sharing her story of

the work she does is not you. She is more practiced at expressing her gifts. It will never help you to compare yourself to others. Comparison being the thief of joy has never been truer and in your case, nothing but harmful.”

“So, let's compare you to you. 4 years ago, you started to write

your story. You didn’t trust yourself to go back to it and yet, here you

sit, with 60,000 words and more to come. You were intimidated by a

$2 16 x 20 blank canvas and today, you have dozens of big, happy paintings filled with brightly colored images. Those came from you, Lucinda - because you did not give up, because you're tenacious,

because you're brave, because you're working on not caring what others think, because you're allowing your makers’ gifts to come through you”.

It worked. I got out of bed, feeling as if a mother had held me and consoled me. And what could have snowballed into a very dreary

day, became one filled with hopeful anticipation, ambition and much

gratitude. Oh, and I jotted down this little note to Comparison, and dropped it off at the post office first thing:

“Dear Comparison/thief of Joy, Get the F**K Out of My House. Love, Lucinda”

Born in Jackson, Tennessee, and he has lived most of his adult life in Fort Walton Beach Florida. fitting in hindsight is a party with experienced mothers who all sit down and prepare you for the vallies to come. We see the joyous moments, the instagram worthy hospital pictures, first weeks at home, the smiles and endless snuggles. But we don’t see the raw reality and depth of the potential darkness to come. Thankfully, I had an amazing doctor who truly cared about my wellbeing as much as my baby’s and encouraged me to take care of myself. He walked me through my options for medication and held me hand as we discussed my fears and hesitations. I am almost 8 months in on the mommy game and I am here to say that the clouds are parting. The skies aren’t clear every day, and there are still vallies waiting for me to trudge through. But I see the light. I am grateful to have had the support, even though I couldn’t see it at the time. There has been a shift in me. I can tell that this journey has been more of a transformation. A stripping of sorts. The choice to be anything but resilient was taken away from me the moment my son entered this world. And to be honest, what a brutally beautiful blessing. Motherhood is not for the weak and only the strong survive. So here I am, a strong, vulnerable, humbled woman who has chosen to keep her eyes focused on the light and who isn’t afraid to yell from the rooftops to all the other mamas who are not okay.. “ you are not alone.” I see you mama. I see the tears, the grief, the weight that you’re carrying, the longing for easier times. The pain is real and it’s big, but your strength and resilience are bigger. I am here, and we are just going to take this one dirty diaper and empty bottle at a time.

I get excited about capturing their performance and learning more about them through their songs. It really doesn't matter to me what genre they are performing. ShatteredHeart A Mother’s heart is shattered, maybe beyond repair. The wounds run deeply, does anybody care. A Mother’s heart loves, beyond what others see. Waiting becomes a task, as we set our children free. A Mother’s heart forgives, when it’s under attack. As it longs for the day her children will come back. A Mother’s heart cries, when it’s misunderstood. As it wonders every, how, why, could or should. A Mother’s heart is joyful, even in times of trial and pain. As it knows many blessings, come from seasons of rain. A Mother’s heart is lonely, when her family can’t relate. As it waits for companionship, before it is too late. A Mother’s heart is happy, when her children smile. As it looks for reasons, to make it last a while. A Mother’s heart is broken, many times over. As it mends itself, and longs for closure. A Mother’s heart is brave, fighting the unknown. As it searches for answers, until her children are grown. A Mother’s heart is full, of laughter and of tears. As it grows with her family, throughout many years. A Mother’s heart is abandoned, when certain stages end. As it ponders and remembers, times never to come again. A Mother’s heart is strong, even when it’s weak. As it listens to the quiet voice of a loving God speak. A Mother’s heart is complex, showing many sides. As it changes and adapts through the roaring tides. A Mother’s heart is shattered, but not beyond repair. As it is filled with gentle love, and handled with tender care.

Christy Milliken's poem titled Shattered Heart says, “A Mother’s heart is happy when her children smile. As it looks for reasons, to make it last a while." There's nothing better than a happy heart. I feel we should find ways to inspire others to smile. Little things like opening the door for others, saying good morning, or even asking "how are you doing?" while smiling are good for both people. It seems like many are not still doing these things but you can be the change if you decide to. Share the love and happiness will follow.
