Welcome TO JW3 Whether it be the smell of fresh pencils in your pencil case, a blank diary waiting to be filled or honeycakes being baked for the upcoming Jewish New Year, there is a feeling of newness in the air. All of which are signs that we’re kicking off a new season of fantastic programming at JW3 and I can guarantee you that this one is going to be a corker. I am delighted to introduce our new Season What’s On Guide, full to the brim of events, festivals and activities for everyone to enjoy. The Autumn/Winter 2019 Season is packed with a fantastic range of classes, courses, talks, discussions, concerts, plays, kids and family activities and so much more. Look out for incredible new musical performances, Brit-Ish (p3) from Sam Eastmond; an enlightening In Conversation with Simon Sebag Montefiore (p12); incredible jazz from Ronnie Scott’s Allstars (p6); Art of War & Manipulative Politics Today with Hagai Segal (p28); Antisemitism: From Recent Past to Unknown Future (p34) with our expert panel “Judge” Rob Rinder, Rachel Riley, Baroness Ruth Deech and Trudy Gold; plenty of wonderful events aimed at Russian-speaking, Israeli and French families (p46-48); and of course, our hugely popular annual Chanukah Funukah and Chanukah Light Ups Chanukah celebrations for families (p44).

As always, we have some stand-out festivals and series this season which are unmissable. We can’t wait to welcome back our UK Jewish Comedy Festival (p8-9) which will have you laughing your kishkes out all the way into 2020. I’m excited to announce our brand-new literary festival Pocket Sized (p10). And our partners are also bringing some outstanding content this season, such as the return of the UK Jewish Film Festival (p17) where you can enjoy some of the best Jewish films from across the globe in our cosy boutique cinema. And to top it all off, our magical Ice Rink returns for December and January. So, whether it’s a skate with the kids, a birthday celebration, first date or even a staff team ice-breaker (sorry, couldn’t resist!), we look forward to welcoming you. As the days get shorter and the nights get colder, be sure to treat yourself to something that will nourish your mind, body or soul, by flicking through this What’s On Guide and booking your places for some events, performances, classes or courses now. I hope to see you again soon.

DIRECTOR OF PROGRAMMING This autumn JW3 turns six. If we were a child we’d be losing our milk teeth. Gappy, adventurous, beaming. We are developing our tastes and we are shaping - sometimes playfully, sometimes earnestly - that sense of ourself that will become our adult identity. So who are we? And what do we love? The brochure you are reading holds the clue. Turn the first pages and you’ll see immediately that we love music. We’ll be navigating the spiritual ‘Days of Awe’ through powerful poetry set to music, tapping our feet at regular jazz nights and overflowing with pride when Sam Eastmond’s big band plays the award-winning Brit-Ish, a new piece we commissioned exploring what it is to be British and Jewish today. Read on and you’ll notice Klezmer in the Park, our Israeli Singing Group, and musical Chanukah Light-Ups. Flick back to the UK Jewish Comedy Festival and you’ll see that we love to laugh. We even find the funny in Freud – the man who told the world’s most enduring stories about how our minds work. And there’s another clue about what we really love. Underlying it all, at the deepest level, we really love stories. Retelling old stories, creating new stories, telling stories through music, through film, through conversation… this is at the heart of this season and of our identity.

And just as the Jewish storytelling tradition is infinitely rich, so too are the forms and stories here. In September we celebrate all stories ‘Pocketsized’ in a new festival exploring a cornucopia of short narratives, headlined by performance poet Hollie McNish. Every week there are opportunities to discuss great novels or poetry, and develop your own creative writing skills. We host special PJ Library story readings for the Jewish Festivals and present winter treats including interactive stories from Chickenshed Theatre for families and little ones. Week in, week out, our teachers unearth tales of long ago and far away and dust off forgotten stories. They keep us up to date with world events as the story of our current time unfurls. In Brains at Breakfast every Wednesday, and on the 81st Anniversary of Kristallnacht, we consider what the next chapters of our story might be. JW3 is part of the rich story of us-the British Jewish Community. What stories do we tell ourselves about ourselves? And what story do we want to tell others about ourselves? Here at JW3, in this wonderful Jewish space where everyone is welcome, we are writing the future of this story season by season, year by year. It is a story about you, so we must write it together. Now we are six. Come and play.

The Ronnie Scott’s All Stars Celebrate 60 Years of the Club

David McAlmont Presents Billie Holiday At Carnegie Hall

Thursday 28 November | 7.30pm £25 | Live Music

Thursday 19 December | 7.30pm £20 | Live Music

The Ronnie Scott’s All Stars celebrate 60 years of one of the world’s most iconic music venues. Set amongst the dive bars and jazz jook joints of London’s Soho, you’ll hear about the desperate finances of the early years and evocative tales of the club’s visitors: pop stars, film stars, politicians, comedians, royalty; but above all, musicians.

David McAlmont leads this tribute to Lady Day, inspired by the legendary 1956 concert at which Billie’s music was accompanied by extracts from her autobiography Lady Sings the Blues. Experience the optimism of her 1930s work through her 1940s Torch songs to her self-penned classics Don’t Explain and Lady Sings the Blues.

"How they sustain such full-on brilliance night after night is a mystery" - The Guardian.

And our many other supporters and members.

You love JW3. We love JW3. And as a not-for-profit charity we need a little bit of help to continue putting on the programme that you enjoy every season, year in and year out. Our building is always open and accessible to all, regardless of background. We offer concessions so that everyone can attend our events at a price point that is affordable. Our free activities including the ever-popular Sunday Crafternoon and the inimitable Hampstead Beach, together with our wide range of community-focused social action and volunteering programmes bring the entire community together. And to keep these activities going, we need to ask you to help us out. Every contribution we receive from people like you, big or small, goes directly to funding our charitable activities, in the pursuit of our mission.

Support JW3 from as little as ÂŁ1 by donating every time you buy a ticket - it only takes a minute. Thank you.
