LISTEN, WE’RE FAMILY 7.30pm, £15 A verbatim play by Kerry Shale & Matthew Lloyd from an idea by Suzanne Shale. Directed by Matthew Lloyd. A JW3 & Wilton’s Music Hall co-production. Our hit play, which received huge critical and popular acclaim, returns to JW3 for two weeks only! Four actors, listening through earpieces, recreate Jewish families exactly as they sound: – a 91-year-old barber recalls a racist punchup; a 25 year-old gay man is embraced by his family; an Orthodox Rabbi recounts the liberation of Belsen; a biographer of Primo Levi on her atheism; a Jewish Rasta on his father’s suburban spanking club. From Brick Lane to the Old Kent Road via Essex, Hendon and Ruislip, here are true tales of Jewish Londoners struggling to make it, of family feuds, crossed wires and outrageous characters. Expect the unexpected: pornography and mental illness, high farce and violence. A hilarious and moving play for everyone who’s ever had a family. ★★★★ ‘A social panorama full of humanity and humour’ – The Times ★★★★ ‘Skilfully woven, intimate and surprising’ – The Observer ★★★★ ‘A universal look at community, family and being human’ – Time Out

Plácido Domingo returns to give his first London performances of another major Verdi baritone role. I due Foscari is based on a play by Byron set in 15th-century Venice. This taut, sombre drama provides the basis for one of Verdi’s most arresting early scores, newly presented in an acclaimed staging by director Thaddeus Strassberger and conducted by Antonio Pappano.

L’ELISIR D’AMORE – LIVE OPERA 7.15pm, £15, £12.50 concession Opera in three acts, sung in Italian Running time 165 minutes (approx) including one interval Donizetti’s romantic comedy of rural life shines brilliantly in Laurent Pelly’s hilarious staging, conducted by Daniele Rustioni. Lucy Crowe takes the soprano lead as sophisticated Adina, loved from afar by Vittorio Grigolo’s Nemorino. Nemorino meets a worrying rival in Levente Molnár’s braggart Sergeant Belcore, until the love potion sold to him by Bryn Terfel’s travelling quack, Dr Dulcamara, gives him a powerful does of courage with both comic and touching results.
Ballet in three acts Running time 175 minutes (approx) including two intervals Christopher Wheeldon’s full-length ballet, based on Lewis Carroll’s classic book, is an exuberant piece of storytelling featuring an instantly recognisable cast of characters, among them a tap-dancing Mad Hatter, a tetchy White Rabbit and a raucously badtempered Queen of Hearts. This ballet is above all a brilliant realisation of Carroll’s zany dreamworld featuring stunning choreography, a colourful score and ingenious stagecraft.

We discuss two wise, witty and wonderful novels in which girls make transformative journeys. In Rutu Modan’s graphic novel The Property, Israeli twentysomething Mica is taken to Warsaw to visit the family home, and uncovers some extraordinary secrets. Rachel Cooke of The Observer called it ‘the graphic novel of the year’. Randa Jarrar’s A Map of Home is a comical odyssey, ‘the kind of book Tristram Shandy or Huck Finn would have narrated had they been born Egyptian-Palestinian and female in the 1970s’.
