CLASSES & COURSES

welcome to our MovementS season We have a wealth of courses and one-off classes that we’re really eager to talk about. The season starts with a Rosh Hashanah Celebration, offering festive talks, cookery, music, and a book club. Over in the kitchen there’s Confessions of a Bad Cook, the Flavours of Babylon demonstration and many more culinary delights. But we’re not only about eating, even at JW3. There are Aaron Rosen’s lectures on Jesus in contemporary art and Jews who have created church art. There’s also an opportunity to discover why so many Jews have been involved in global revolutions in Matt Plen’s course Talking About A Revolution. COOK I

DRAWING THE BODY AS SACRED 7.30-9.30pm, £15 per class

BENEDICT ROMAIN When we talk about drawing from life, are we aware of what exactly it is that we are drawing? This life drawing class explores the many ways to see the human figure, including rising to the challenge of how as artists we can relate to the model not as an object to draw, but a sacred life. Benedict Romain is a sculptor and experienced teacher, who encourages students to use different media and approaches as well as an inspiring range of models.

DRAWING THE URBAN LANDSCAPE

DRAWING DANCE MASTERCLASS

10.30am-12.30pm, £15

2-4pm, £17

BEN NATHAN

JACQUELINE NICHOLLS

Take a walk around the neighbourhood of JW3 with artist Ben Nathan and discover the complex patterns, architecture, and vistas in the area. This masterclass will combine drawing outside with reflection in the JW3 Art Studio. Using a combination of street sketches and memory, back in the studio we will compose a composite drawing of the walk and a personal mapping of the area. Ben Nathan is an artist who is fascinated by travelling through the city and urban landscapes.

Observing and drawing dance is a challenge for artists. They need to understand and capture the range of movement inherent in the art form. Working with performers, we will use drawing to observe and learn how the dancers develop gestures and choreography, and explore different ways to express movement within a static drawing. With artist Jacqueline Nicholls, mainly known for her Jewish art, who also has an interest in drawing performance and movement.

ISRAEL’S FOREIGN RELATIONS – THE SUPERPOWERS 10.30am-12noon, £12 per class, £40 for the course

HAGAI SEGAL Israel’s place in the world today is an interesting and unique one. Some states, including some of Israel’s neighbours, refuse to even recognise its existence, while many other countries embrace the State of Israel as an important and valuable partner and member of the international community of nations. Yet even these relations are not without challenges. The first part of this course will examine Israel’s relations with the world’s superpowers and emerging superpowers – the USA, China, Russia and India.

TERRORISM 2014 – THE BEGINNING OF THE END, OR END OF THE BEGINNING?

JEWISH ARTISTS OF THE SCHOOL OF PARIS

10.30am-12noon, £12 per class, £30 for the course

AARON ROSEN

HAGAI SEGAL

7-8.30pm, £12 In the early 20th century, in a shabby area of Paris, a group of upstart artists – including perhaps the greatest Jewish artists of all time – set up studios a stone’s throw from one another. Marc Chagall, Chaim Soutine, Amedeo Modigliani and Jacques Lipchitz all created some of their finest works in these years, sometimes even depicting one another. Learn about their bohemian escapades, controversial artistic advances – especially Cubism – and the different ways in which they dealt with their Jewish identities.

Monday 20 October

MODERN ART, ARTISTS AND COLLECTORS, AND NAZI GERMANY 7-8.30pm, £12

AARON ROSEN Over 12 years have passed since the 9/11 atrocities that changed the world, and led to the ‘War On Terror’. But where do we stand now? Hagai Segal, who advises counter-terror agencies across the globe, examines the current state of both the terrorists and the counter-terrorists, and whether since the killing of bin Laden we have seen the end of terrorism, or if recent events and attacks show that terrorism remains a real threat.

In 2013, the world was stunned to learn a Munich pensioner had over a thousand modern masterpieces dubiously acquired by his father during Hitler’s reign. In 2014, the V&A published the complete inventory of the so-called ‘Degenerate Art’ confiscated by the Nazis from collections, some of which was shown in an infamous exhibition in Munich in 1937. We investigate what happened to modern artists, collectors and works of art under the Nazis, and explore recent efforts to right these injustices.

Monday 24 November

JESUS IN CONTEMPORARY ART 7-8.30pm, £12

WHY DO JEWS CREATE ART FOR CHURCHES?

AARON ROSEN

7-8.30pm, £12

For millennia, Christians have argued passionately – sometimes violently – over what constitutes an appropriate depiction of Jesus. Contemporary artists, including Jews, have depicted Jesus as everything from an Israeli soldier to a Maori warrior. They have used materials ranging from the traditional to the ‘innovative’, including urine and milk chocolate. While often portrayed as heretics or blasphemers, are these artists simply continuing a long tradition of creating shocking images of Christ? Might they have important lessons to teach us?

AARON ROSEN

Jews have created a startling number of works for churches. Some of the most prominent modern artists include Jacques Lipchitz, Marc Chagall, Jacob Epstein, Mark Rothko, Louise Nevelson and Anthony Caro. In fact, Rothko even declared he would only create for a church, never a synagogue. We will survey some of the most intriguing examples, especially the Nevelson chapel in New York, the subject of Aaron Rosen’s forthcoming book, Religion and Art in the Heart of Modern Manhattan. Dr. Aaron Rosen is lecturer in Sacred Traditions and the Arts at King’s College, London.

Monday 17 November

HOW TO COLLECT JEWISH ART 7-8.30pm, £12

AARON ROSEN Are you an art collector, or thinking of becoming one? We will talk about options for every price range, from a tenner to tens of thousands. Learn some key places to look, from auction houses to galleries, studios and websites. We will also talk about what makes a strong collection, financially, aesthetically and conceptually. Our focus will be on works by Jewish artists, but our discussion will encompass a wide range of art in many different media.

DANCE IN ART

KABBALAH IN THREE EASY STEPS

7.30-8.30pm, £7

LUCREZIA WALKER How have artists used colour, shadings, and brush strokes to depict dance? Let’s hear the music and imagine the choreography by looking at paintings from Gainsborough’s Giovanna Baccelli to Vettriano’s Singing Butler. Lucrezia will focus on Degas, touch upon how Futurists and Vorticists used the theme of dance, and introduce us to the beauty of famous paintings. Lucrezia is an art historian and author who lectures at Tate and The National Gallery.

TEXT AND TASTE: LEARN AND EAT FOR YOUNG PROFESSIONALS 7-9.45pm, £10 per class, £27 for the course

LEAH JORDAN AND BENJI STANLEY Through midrash, the Rabbis add to and even subvert our most sacred text, the Written Torah. Meanwhile, ‘fan fiction’ has seen fans spread their love of the BBC’s Sherlock all over the internet. We will explore how these ancient rabbinic and contemporary multimedia phenomena reflect on each other. What do they reveal about us and what we love? How can the generating and even subverting of a story deepen rather than diminish its meaning?

14

8-9.30pm, £12 per class, £30 for the course

ELIE JESNER Shrouded in secrecy and impenetrable texts, the Kabbalah has always been controversial, often accused of heresy and undermining Jewish practice. Its recent flourishing amongst such celebrities as Madonna has only added to the sense that it is an oddity, and not to be taken seriously. This exploration of the history, philosophy and psychology behind Kabbalah will shed some light on these matters. Meditations on exile, fragmentation and alienation will enable it to be heard by the modern ear.

ELIE JESNER Few thinkers have had their ideas more misrepresented, either through malice or ignorance, than Sigmund Freud. Many sense that he was on to something of deep significance, but it can be hard to cut through the jargon and confusion to uncover his meaning. This course, presuming no prior acquaintance with Freud, will present some of his key ideas and explore their development by those who followed him. We will focus on clear and meaningful understanding, but without undue simplification.

SILVIA NACAMULLI Good sharp knives are a kitchen essential, and to know how to use them safely and competently is a fundamental skill for any cook. We’ll work with meat, poultry, fruit and vegetables. And we will also learn how to keep the knives as sharp as our new skills.

Adam Marks is a true booze aficionado and supplies London’s top bars with the best spirits available. Having worked in the industry since the age of 18, he has worked in bars, hotels and members’ clubs, and has toured the world’s distilleries from Panama to Italy. However, it was on an industry visit to Kentucky when he lost his heart to Bourbon. Here he chooses four of his favourites. There’ll be a discussion on Bourbon’s history, flavour profiling, easy cocktails to make at home and, of course, plenty to taste.
