Welcome TO JW3 There’s nothing quite like summer at JW3, and for 2020 we’ve got a jam-packed season of music, performances, classes, courses, film festivals and of course the return of our famous free Hampstead Beach to keep you entertained. Some of the events I’ve already stuck in my diary are Live From JW3 with Jed Mercurio in conversation with Lord Michael Grade (p4); JEW…ish, a hilarious play that sold out last year’s Edinburgh Fringe (p11); Brundibar: Children’s Opera, that’s been translated by the legendary Tony Kushner (p24); and an evening of captivating klezmer music with She’Koyokh (p8). For families, our hugely popular Parent and Baby Fest for new and expecting parents returns this summer (p52), and our all-round non-stop roster of kids’ activities, including our summer holiday Drama Camps (p61). This season also features our homage to Israel for Yom Ha’Atzmaut with a massive party and delicious food, celebrating Tel Aviv style (p45). And you won’t want to miss the return of SERET, the London Israeli Film and TV Festival (p16). And don’t forget our ongoing film programme showcasing the best of Jewish and Israeli cinema, the summer’s best new releases, Live Arts on Screen, Special Screenings, and Film Talks – all in our oh-so comfortable boutique Cinema (p16-18). And keep an eye on your email inbox for more high quality events in our Alan Howard-JW3 Speaker Series and Global Jewish Conversations series to be announced during the months ahead. I look forward to seeing you again at JW3 soon - whether it’s for a brilliant evening of culture, an inspiring talk, a social action project, or a cocktail on the Beach! Have a great summer.

DIRECTOR OF PROGRAMMING This season – as always – we invite you to come together in this wonderful Jewish space where everyone is welcome, and enjoy shared experiences with people you might not otherwise encounter. In a fragmented world, we offer opportunities to unite across lines of difference in joyful, challenging and inspiring ways. Sometimes we do this explicitly: this season we’re holding our Open Door personal development project for teenage girls from Muslim, Christian and Jewish schools; interfaith celebrations of Iftar and Passover; our regular ‘Get Connected’ sessions where young people support their elders to master communication technologies; a new LGBTQ+ café for young people, and a fantastic bike-repair partnership with Kisharon school for children with learning disabilities. However, for me, the most profound opportunities for different people to come together are those which are quietly baked into the fabric of what we do. Evenings of world-class music or brand-new theatre where people of all races, homelands, sexual and religious identities thrill to the same experience. Hundreds of students giving our building its beating daytime heart, learning and arguing together, and making deep friendships. Our inclusive summer camp. A multi-cultural staff and volunteer team drawn from all over the world. Free and accessible family activities including weekly Crafternoons and our beautiful beach where children of all backgrounds play and create together. And why? Because we believe that by encountering others, by doing things together where the illumination of shared joy or curiosity puts our differences in the shade, we grow understanding, reduce prejudice and build a more resilient, respectful community for UK Jewry and for London. So come as you are. Bring someone new. You don’t have to be Jewish, you just have to be ready to encounter, and to be encountered by, something or someone different from yourself. Welcome.

Rachel Grunwald Director of Programming
