World War I: Marking the Centenary with William Tyler MBE

Wednesday 5 September 11am - 1pm £20 per session

Thursday 6 September 10.45am - 3.45pm

Trudy will focus on the stories of those Jews who fought for the British army and those who fought with the Germans. Loyal to the King - and on the other side to the Tzar, and Kaiser, and Emperor - and to their Country. Was the First World War Good for the Jews? with Clive Lawton Wednesday 5 September 2 - 4pm £20 per session

100 years on from the end of the First World War, we shall look at its immediate consequences and at its long term legacy for us in Britain. Described as ‘The war to end all wars’, it proved nothing of the sort, as Europe once again went to war just 21 years later. The images of the dead and dying young men haunt our national memory, and in this Brexit era it forces us once again to examine our relationship with continental Europe.

The League of Nations gave rise to new hopes for ethnic based communities. The Versailles treaty with its vindictive and punitive demands on Germany probably led to the rise of Hitler. The birth of the Soviet Union set up the split across Europe that would last for the next 70 years. All of these are chilling examples of the law of unintended consequences, and bring to mind the adage - be careful what you wish for.
