Nearly everyone recognises occasional feelings of guilt in themselves. But Jews seem on the whole to be too good at feeling guilty. Too much guilt or too little guilt will cause trouble. Bernard, a practising psychoanalyst will take a psychoanalytic look at what we mean by guilt, conscience, superego and self-punishment. Can we develop and control a healthy attitude to guilt? If so, how? He’ll also discuss ‘survivor guilt’ as a special problem.

FROM REVOLUTION TO PUTIN, 1917-2017

DAVID NEWMAN OBE

10.45am-3.45pm, £40, £35 web advance

Israel was only established 19 years before the Six-Day War but there is a tendency to see these first 19 years as something permanent and everything that has happened since 1967 as somehow transient, temporary and open to change. This mini course will discuss the way that the SixDay War has impacted Israel, its internal politics, and its relations with the rest of the world and World Jewry. It will explore to what extent the events of 1967 define contemporary political and social discourses.

WILLIAM TYLER MBE

A century on from the Russian Revolution, Russia has yet to find a way towards a western style democracy. Moreover, Putin’s Russia appears in many ways to have similar autocratic trappings to that of the former Tsarist state. We’ll trace Russia’s tortuous path over the last hundred years.

Tuesday 15 - Thursday 17 August

2020 VISION SEMINAR 1967: A CONTROVERSIAL LEGACY? This seminar focuses on 1967, a watershed year for both the Jews and western society. The Six-Day War changed the way in which Jews saw themselves and how the world viewed Israel. Many see Israel’s changes as Zionism finally coming of age and into itself. Others trace most of its current challenges to the unintended consequences of that war. jw3.org.uk/2020vision 19

JOSEPHUS’ THE JEWISH WAR AS LITERATURE

PROFESSOR JAN JOOSTEN

7.30-9.30pm, £10, £8 web advance

The ‘new’ texts discovered at Qumran in the Dead Sea area are a godsend for specialists of Hebrew. Coming from the precise period for which documentation was previously lacking, between the Bible and the Mishnah, they help fill in the history of the language. The lecture will illustrate some important insights with examples. Jan Joosten taught at the Faculty of Protestant Theology of the University of Strasbourg for 20 years. In 2014 he was appointed Regius Professor of Hebrew at the University of Oxford.

PROFESSOR MARTIN GOODMAN The Jewish War, composed by the historian Josephus, is often studied as a crucial source for knowledge about the Jewish revolt against Rome, which led to the destruction of the Temple in 70 CE. Much has been written about Josephus’ own tortuous political career, but far less has been said about him as a writer of a compelling and vivid narrative. The lecture will encourage reading of The Jewish War as a remarkable work of literature.

Since 1967, more than 60,000 JewishAmericans have settled in the territories captured by the State of Israel during the Six-Day War. They demand attention around the world, but little is known about who they are and why they chose to leave America to live at the centre of the IsraeliPalestinian conflict.

The Bodleian Library at the University of Oxford holds one of the largest and most important collections of Hebrew manuscripts in the world. The Polonsky Digitisation Project has digitised thousands of manuscripts in both the Bodleian and Vatican Libraries. Discover which Hebrew manuscripts have been digitised and how they were chosen.

TRANSLATING YEHUDA AMICHAI

CONSERVADOX OR ORTHOPRAX? LOUIS JACOBS & THE TYRANNY OF LABELS

7.30-9.30pm, £10, £8 web advance PROFESSOR ADRIANA X JACOBS The Israeli poet Yehuda Amichai was first introduced to English-language audiences in the 1965 debut issue of Modern Poetry in Translation, edited by Ted Hughes and Daniel Weissbort. Years later, Amichai would say that with these translations he was ‘sent into orbit’ and brought to an international stage. This talk will discuss these early translations of Amichai into English in relation to the themes and figures of translation that appear in the poet’s own writing.

7.30-9.30pm, £10, £8 web advance DR MIRI FREUD-KANDEL Mere reference to Louis Jacobs still incites controversy within much of British Orthodoxy. Selected as Britain’s Greatest Jew by a Jewish Chronicle survey, how should we understand both Jacobs and the Jewish community from which he came? Are there signs of changes within British Jewry that could indicate the community is ready to move beyond religious controversy to thinking more seriously about its Judaism?
