7.30-9pm, £20 per session, £64 for the 4 week course TRUDY GOLD
2-3.30pm, £20 per session, £64 for the 4 week course
Political Zionism arose in the late 19th century, a response to modern antisemitism, Jewish nationalism and the Messianic dream. Today to some it is a word of abuse. This mini-course will explore major figures whose ideas and actions led to the creation of Israel: Pinsker, Herzl, Ahad Ha’am, Weizmann, Jabotinsky and Ben-Gurion.
The world of the first centuries BCE and CE continues to fascinate. The course examines some of the historical foundations behind the parting of the ways between Jews and Christians, and whether Jesus had any role in the schism. What was his relationship to Mary Magdalene? And to prophets of his time?

In summer 1968 singer and actress Georgia Brown took a BBC crew around the East End streets of her youth, considering how areas once largely populated by Jews were then becoming home to a new wave of migrants. This illustrated talk explores how the film drew parallels between the Jews of the 1890s and the Pakistanis of the 1960s, and questioned what the future of the UK Jewish community would be.
Jewish refugees from Nazi Germany boarded ships that transported them to new destinations: Palestine, the US, or Australia. Forced to leave Europe behind, with an insecure new life ahead, many used their time aboard ship to reflect on their past and future.
