Gateways Annual Review 2017-2018

Empowering young people through education

foreword As Gateways reaches its fifth anniversary, it can be so proud of what it has achieved. Since launching in January 2014, the programme has surpassed expectations and to date has supported over 250 vulnerable young people who have come through its doors looking for a second chance. Highlights over the last five years have included registering as an exam centre, expanding the range of courses, developing a life skills programme, providing mentoring, and producing a student cookbook. All of us at JW3 are also thrilled with the outstanding exam results that our Gateways students achieved this summer. Over 35 examinations and assessments took place, with a 90% success rate. It is now possible to see the huge impact that Gateways has made on the lives of hundreds of young people facing challenges. Many of these students have progressed into full time employment, apprenticeships, university and even started their own businesses. The JW3 trustees, faculty and students of Gateways wish to thank every one of the donors and foundations who continue to

show their appreciation for this programme through their generous financial support. Without you, Gateways would not be able to deliver its high quality educational and pastoral care services to a marginalised and vulnerable sector of the community. Gateways looks forward to another creative and productive year and hopes you will continue to take an interest in the ongoing development and success of this programme and all the young people who are part of it.

INTRODUCTION

INTRODUCTION  When Gateways was launched five years ago, it would have been hard to imagine the thriving programme it has become. Gateways offers vocational classes to groups of students aged 15 to 17 years. Many face academic and social challenges within the school environment and this programme provides a welcome change and a chance to build confidence through mastering new skills. Social services, youth organisations or previous schools refer other students not currently in education, employment or training. Many are in the 18 – 25 year age group and are struggling to cope with tough challenges in their personal lives. Gateways’ unique service consists of a customised programme, tailored to meet each student’s needs, including academic and/or vocational courses, together with life skills training and mentoring.

location Gateways is a project of JW3 in North West London. Students enjoy state of the art facilities including a demonstration kitchen, a dance and fitness studio, top of the range computer equipment, a modern work environment and access to an on-site Kosher café.

2018 saw the second round of students successfully taking exams at JW3, now a registered exam centre. It was also the year in which Gateways launched its first BTEC cooking class. Thanks to Gateways establishing new relationships with additional Jewish schools and a wider network of external bodies, there has been a growing interest in the programme and more referrals than ever before. In a climate where young people are increasingly struggling with social pressures, mental health issues and a competitive academic environment, Gateways is playing a vital role in guiding its students towards a future in which they are able to take their place in society as independent and selfsufficient adults.

INTRODUCTION

Programme overview Every young person, no matter who they are or where they are from, should have the opportunity to progress and thrive, regardless of the struggles they face. Young people in every community are affected by poverty, neglect and abuse. The Jewish community is not immune to these issues. There is a growing number of vulnerable young Jewish people who struggle to function within mainstream schools. Many believe that there is no other option available to them. JW3’s Gateways programme provides a viable alternative.

STUDENTS

student profiles Students come to Gateways from a wide range of backgrounds, through many different referring bodies. The staff team tailormakes a programme designed around each student’s academic and emotional needs, as every individual requires a different level of care and support. Below are three examples of students currently enrolled on the programme.

Female, age 15

This student suffers from anxiety and depression, which has led to her finding it increasingly difficult to attend school. She became withdrawn and her irregular sleep pattern exacerbated her symptoms. Following her referral to Gateways, she now attends weekly Maths and English lessons and is on track to sit her Functional Skills exams in the summer term.

Male, age 21

Male, age 17

No longer at school, this student has become estranged from his community and has struggled to find his place within the wider world. With little structure to his days, Gateways has provided the environment and opportunity to re-enter the education system. He is now working towards acquiring Functional Skills Level 2 in English. This is a stepping stone to building his confidence in moving forward to a career.

Semi-excluded from school for behavioural issues, this student now spends three full days at Gateways engaging in Personal Training, Food Academy and Life Skills courses. The aim is to enable him to

EDUCATION

 EDUCATION

Educational Report Gateways offers academic courses in Maths and English. It also provides students with the opportunity to access vocational courses. All Maths and English lessons are taught one to one, catering for the specific needs of the individual. By building on the student’s skills, the programme aims to develop both their abilities and their self-confidence. The intake for Maths and English has steadily increased and the 2017-18 academic year saw the largest cohort of exam candidates to date. In addition to GCSEs, Gateways now offers Entry Level Certificates and Functional Skills qualifications in Maths and English. Functional Skills Level 2 is widely recognised as an equivalent to a 4 grade at GCSE and is less demanding, which is better suited to many Gateways students. External exams are offered in November, February and June. Given the nature of the students on the programme, this is an excellent

option, allowing them to acquire multiple qualifications in the space of one academic year. For those who need to attain passes in specific subjects within a short time frame, for example for college entry, this is a great advantage of the Gateways education system.

Accredited courses The number of accredited courses offered continues to increase. After five years of running successful cooking classes, Gateways is delighted to have launched a BTEC course in Home Cooking Skills. This will enable students to progress to higher education or to find work within the food industry. In order to build on the accomplishments of the last year, the programme is looking to expand its academic and vocational courses, and to increase the number of students attending.

11

EDUCATION

GATEWAYS COURSES The academic courses offered by Gateways are English, Mathematics and ICT, while vocational subjects fall into three categories: Food, Health and Hospitality, Arts and Media, and Finance.

12

EDUCATION

core academic subjects Gateways offers personalised oneto-one sessions in Mathematics and English, which are designed to meet the specific needs of the student. As students increase their competence in literacy, numeracy and ICT, they become more confident about progressing to the workplace in their chosen field or on to further education. The English and Maths intake continues to increase, and over the five years since Gateways was launched, these courses have become more diverse and specialised, in order to cater for the varied academic levels of students entering the programme.

English Language and Literature

English courses range from Entry Level and Functional Skills to GCSEs. Students develop vocabulary and syntax and learn essay-writing techniques. Those who are motivated to progress further can study for their GCSEs in English Language and Literature. For many students this will be the first time they have engaged with classic literature.

Mathematics

The importance of numeracy skills in everyday life is taught to students, some of whom have little to no prior confidence in the subject. Students learn to understand mobile phone and utility bills, to deal with bank statements and overdrafts and to master other basic numeracy skills for functioning day to day. Again, Gateways offers the opportunity to study at a level that suits their needs, from Entry Level to Functional Skills to GCSEs. Among the students enrolled at Gateways there is a mix of abilities, so they are able to choose between taking their GCSEs at a Foundation or Higher level.

ICT

Students learn basic skills in ICT, gaining a thorough grasp of Microsoft Office programmes such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint. The aim is that those taking ICT will leave the programme equipped with the necessary skills to apply with confidence for entry-level jobs, such as office junior.

13

EDUCATION

VOCATIONAL COURSES Each vocational course provides students with a practical introduction to a specific employment sector. These courses are ideal for those following an alternative curriculum. They enable students to make progress towards their personal learning and career goals.

14

EDUCATION

ARTS & MEDIA Gateways is currently able to offer three courses in the field of Arts and Media, and there is the potential to offer further courses, depending on demand.

Drama

At Gateways, Drama courses are geared towards helping students with their social interaction and improving their self-esteem. Building their experience in performance and theatre can give young people a great sense of achievement. Classes are small, in order to offer a safe space where they are able to develop their skills at their own pace, and according to their own needs.

Music Production

Students learn to compose short soundtracks and audio effects to produce their own CD. They structure songs, write melodies with chords and recognise changes in songs, such as chord progressions and bridges. The class is taught by a professional song-writer and music producer.

Digital Photography

The course aims to teach the basic principles of photography, composition and editing in a light hearted, fun and creative manner. Students learn how modern digital cameras work, where and when to use different lenses and the theory of photographic composition and exposure. Topics range from Portraiture and Still Life to photographing in artificial light and the effect of flash on a picture. Once the basics are understood, the focus moves on to the artistic element of photography and finally to editing and basic retouching techniques. The JW3 environment is used for inspiration, and in the 2017-18 year, a group of students made excellent use of the opportunity to photograph a production in the Howard Hall.

15

EDUCATION

FOOD, HEALTH & HOSPITALITY Food Academy

Professional chefs run these courses, sharing their knowledge of and love for different types of cuisine and cooking techniques with the students. JW3 has an in-house demonstration kitchen, equipped with top-of-the-range cooking equipment, which enables Gateways students to prepare menus to the highest standard. For many of the students, this course is their first culinary exploration. They begin with learning basic knife skills and preparing simple meals. As they progress, students refine their ability and begin to explore Asian and Middle Eastern cuisines. Gateways is always looking for opportunities for our students to develop their skills and to give them ownership of their work. Allowing them to prepare, produce and sell their dishes to the general public increases their confidence and self-belief. In the 2018 – 19 academic year, Gateways has registered its first group of students for the BTEC qualification in Home Cooking Skills.

16

Hair & Beauty

A professional hairdresser and beautician teaches students skills and techniques in the world of hair and beauty. The course begins by covering modules such as Customer Service, Nail Services, Basic Hairdressing Techniques, Basic Facial Treatments, Health and Safety in Hair and Beauty and Careers in Hair and Beauty. Students are then able to move on to more advanced and in-depth topics, such as Practical Hair Colour and Bridal Hair. Through practicing on their fellow students, they build friendships, gain life skills they can apply to their own lives and in the workplace, and gain a sense of accomplishment. In the next year, Gateways aims to introduce an accredited course in Hair and Beauty.

Personal Training

This is one of Gateways’ longestrunning courses. A professional Personal Trainer and Osteopath has taught it for the past five years. Once students have completed the introductory level, they can progress to a Level 1 accreditation. The course focuses on nutrition, the body and physical fitness. For a number of students, this is proving a valuable alternative route to more formal academic learning and employment.

“

Cooking is a life skill, and this course taught me about all aspects of cooking. I learnt to explain things better and when people complimented my food, it made me more confident about my cooking.

EDUCATION

FINANCE

Finance and Bookkeeping/Start your Own Business

Students are introduced to the basic theory and skills required for bookkeeping and accounting. They work towards completing a recognised qualification (Level I Certificate in Basic Bookkeeping), organised in association with Inter Alia. These courses cover the introductory principles of double entry bookkeeping and how this is used in business. Successful candidates are able to continue onto the Level II Certificate in Computerised Bookkeeping or the Level II Certificate in Manual Bookkeeping.

18

Office Management

Students gain an insight into an office environment and learn essential skills, such as telephone communication, email etiquette, photocopying, filing, face-to-face communication and minute taking.

Personal Finance

Many students have never been taught the fundamentals of managing money. Students will acquire the tools to make educated decisions regarding personal spending, budgeting, credit cards, interest rates and paying bills. The course begins by advising students on how to compile a budget and use it when making decisions about their spending.

EDUCATION

2017–18 Exam Success Every student taking an exam or assessment has had to overcome huge obstacles, both academically and emotionally. For many, just turning up for classes each week is a huge achievement in itself. Students who progress through the programme are able to work towards their goals and realise their ambitions by moving on to higher education, apprenticeship schemes and applying for jobs.

• 26 assessments and examinations were taken May/June 2018 • Assessments included: ~ QTF Level 2 in Personal Fitness ~ Entry-level Certificate ~ Functional Skills Level 1 and Level 2 ~ GCSE • 50% of students had never taken an exam before • 100% of students taking GCSEs achieved a grade A* - C • 95% of students achieved a pass in Functional Skills exams • 95% of students achieved a pass in Entry Level Certificate assessments

STAFF & SERVICES

PASTORAL services Pastoral care is central to the wellbeing and development of each individual student at Gateways. Therefore, the Pastoral Services Department supports, guides and empowers every student to develop the skills needed to successfully sustain their well-being during their time at Gateways and throughout their lives ahead. It is vital to the students’ academic success that we provide an environment in which they feel safe and are consequently able to communicate confidentially and openly with the Gateways core team. Each student has encountered their own challenges and some make disclosures to staff. The team supports every student by continually checking in with them, offering them oneto-one counselling, referring them to outside organisations where relevant and sometimes by just giving them time to talk over a cup of coffee. The team works together with students, as well as training and supporting staff, to explore their circumstances, anxieties and patterns of behaviour, helping them build their selfesteem, confidence, resilience and strengths, all essential to achieving positive mental health and well-being. This year Gateways has focused on building relationships with the many organisations within the community and sharing expertise. Team members attended a training course at Jewish Women’s Aid to help staff recognise and assist those students who may have experienced or are presently experiencing domestic violence. Several students live or have lived with an abusive parent; some have continued this pattern and are now in relationships with abusive partners. The damage to their self-esteem is extreme and

affects every aspect of their lives, including the most basic will to get out of bed on some days. For some Gateways is their only lifeline. Gateways continually works together with local authorities in supporting those students who are ‘Looked After Children’. The Gateways team makes sure that our office is a warm and inviting place in which both our staff and students feel relaxed and safe. We leave our door open and encourage students to come in and say ‘hello’ prior to every lesson so that we can monitor how students are feeling, encouraging them to build a relationship with staff. The first step in helping students to build relationships is to let them feel heard. We take care in interviewing every single student, not just to hear about the courses and classes in which they are interested but also to gain a deep understanding of their individual needs, to choose the right match in the teacher allocated to them and to become familiar with their own distinct emotional requirements. At Gateways, pastoral care is not merely a complementary practice. It is a fundamental aspect of the programme’s existence and is fully integrated throughout the teaching, learning and structural organisation, to responsibly and effectively meet the personal, social and academic needs of students.

23

STAFF & SERVICES

ADDITIONAL SUPPORT Study Skills workshops

Particularly important prior to the exam season are these workshops to assist students with their exam preparation and performance. They are given advice, revision, relaxation techniques and support in order to help alleviate their pre-exam stress and anxiety.

Life Skills

This year Gateways ran a oneoff cookery class for those who would benefit from some basic kitchen skills and healthy recipes. Some students live in care or alone and don’t have the luxury of having someone to cook a meal for them. Some have little or no financial support. Whilst cooking, the students supported each other and gave one another confidence. It was a great success and Gateways will be repeating this.

Food Vouchers

Gateways provides food vouchers to those students who may not otherwise be eating adequately due to lack of financial support. Thanks to Zest restaurant in JW3, students may choose breakfast or lunch for themselves.

24

Work Readiness

For students to have both the confidence and ability to start the challenging process of job applications Gateways offers help and one-to-one support with both CV writing and completing job applications. The team also helps with the process of apprenticeship applications and interview technique. Along with preparing students for work, the team assists with finding job placements including part-time work with Zest Restaurant and CafĂŠ or ushering for the JW3 box office. Staff took some of the older students to Work Avenue for a charity recruitment fair. This gave them the opportunity to talk with many charities about potential jobs, as well as improving their confidence and experience in interview skills.

Staff Training

Essential to all teachers is safeguarding training, which was given at a staff training day. This year the Head of Pastoral Care introduced a Student Concern Form for all staff to pass on in writing any concern they may have regarding students whom they teach.

STAFF & SERVICES

Our tutors Gateways’ tutors and mentors are fundamental to the successful outcome of the programme. To maintain the best quality education for its students, JW3 requires all incoming Gateways staff to have at least 3-5 years experience working with young people and to have either an accredited teaching qualification or be professional educators in their field. They must also show a desire to help and enrich the lives of others.

Jonny Berliner Maths

Jonny is a qualified teacher with over 15 years of one-toone teaching experience, and 5 years of classroom experience, teaching Maths and Science up to A-level. Jonny is also currently completing a Masters in Science Education at the UCL Institute of Education and developing song-based teaching resources for Science teachers.

Danielle Levinson Food Academy

Deciding to follow her real passion, Danielle left the world of fashion and launched Teach Us To Cook, in 2004. She teaches smaller groups and provides one-toone sessions. Ultimately, her aim is to ensure that all of her students come away feeling enthused and inspired by exploring the many facets of cookery through exciting recipes and to help them find their passion for this all-important life skill.

All staff are required to attend regular in-house staff meetings and ongoing training sessions throughout the year. Tutors liaise continuously with the Head of the Programme and report any issues that may arise. At the end of each term, they are asked to submit a report on each student, which enables the team to track students’ progress and make recommendations for the next term.

Karina Katz English

Karina has enjoyed teaching English for over twenty years, with particular focus on GCSE. She brings her experience of teaching both in the classroom and one-onone to the programme.

Sarah Davis Drama

Sarah has always loved theatre and performing. Using it as a tool in her teaching, she found that drama is an essential tool in helping with social interaction, improving self-esteem and, in turn, finding huge self-satisfaction in learning the skills of performance. Sarah’s background in teaching acting (from Year 2 to adults), directing, drama therapy and writing has now led her to Gateways. Sarah hopes her love of theatre will help others to find greater confidence.

gateways alumni Binyamin Chalk recently graduated from the Gateways programme. Originally coming to us with no qualifications, Binyamin has gained a Grade A* and A in Maths and English GCSE, enabling him to progress into full time employment. In a discussion with the Programme Head, Binyamin shared his thoughts on his time at Gateways. What was different about Gateways, compared with other schools?

How would you describe your time at Gateways?

Gateways gave me a chance to learn at my own pace, with understanding staff who helped me through when I was finding life difficult, and without the pressures of a school classroom environment.

Gateways helped me plough through my personal problems by always having a listening and caring ear whenever I needed. I know have a bright future ahead.

How have the courses helped you? Gateways courses have helped me with skills I use in my everyday life especially at work. They also helped me with my confidence in general, as I set myself goals at Gateways and managed to follow through, thanks to the team of staff.

What skills have you learned from your time at Gateways? I have successfully passed my English and Maths GCSES with high grades; I also learnt music production, personal training and photography skills.

How have your teachers made a difference to you? All my teachers were extremely understanding of the pressures and troubles I came into class with. They always managed to put forward a positive lesson even when I was being uncooperative. Binyamin Chalk (right) in his role as site manager.
