BRETHREN ON THE BATTLEFIELD: THE JEWS IN THE FIRST WORLD WAR

THE UNSETTLED QUESTION: HISTORY AND POLITICS OF THE ISRAELI SETTLER MOVEMENT SINCE 1967

7.30-9pm, £15, £12 web advance

DEREK PENSLAR Jews constantly face conflicting demands of patriotism within their own country and solidarity with fellow Jews when being conscripted. In WWI some 1.5 million Jews mobilised for battle. There was no unifying war experience for such a vast number of soldiers - the Jewish encounter with the war took place within two intersecting dyads: patriotism versus solidarity and empowerment of the spirit versus suffering of the body.

Thursday 4 February

ISRAELI POETRY IN WARTIME 7.30-9pm, £15, £12 web advance

DR ADRIANA X JACOBS How does contemporary Israeli poetry frame, perceive and represent the ongoing political and social conflicts that have shaped daily life in Israel for the past several decades? This talk will reflect on the figure of the poet as witness and outline the development of a visual poetics that allows the contemporary Israeli political poem to engage and resonate in the Israeli context long after events have passed.

17

7.30-9pm, £15, £12 web advance

DR SARA YAEL HIRSCHHORN We’ll discuss ideologies as well as changing constituencies and discourses within the settlement project since the Six Day War. This talk will not ‘settle’ the debate, but hopefully it will enlighten the audience about the settlement enterprise.

Thursday 11 February

EUROPEAN JEWRY AND WWI 7.30-9pm, £15, £12 web advance

PROFESSOR DAVID RECHTER In Jewish collective memory, WWI has been overshadowed by WWII and the Holocaust. The Great War’s consequences and meanings have received remarkably little attention, yet only by understanding the Jewish experience of WWI can we properly grasp the course of later Jewish history and the tragedy that was to come.

WHAT CAN WE LEARN ABOUT JEWS IN ROMAN EGYPT FROM PAPYRI?

7.30-9pm, £15, £12 web advance

7.30-9pm, £15, £12 web advance

PROFESSOR ALISON SALVESE

DEBORAH JACOBS

References to the land of Egypt in the Hebrew Bible are almost always negative. Given the Exodus story of the slavery in Egypt and their redemption, commemorated yearly at Pesach, this is hardly surprising. Yet other biblical portrayals of Egypt, such as the story of Joseph, are more positive, and diaspora communities often prospered in Egypt.

We know that Alexandria had a thriving Jewish community from the works of Philo of Alexandria. From papyri, however, we can learn about day-to-day life in the Egyptian chora (the country outside the Greek cities). The papyri frequently mention Jews, their life under Roman rule in Egypt up until the revolt and the demise of the Jewish Community in 117 CE.

‘EGYPT’ IN THE DEAD SEA SCROLLS: DANGER AND PROVISION

CLEOPATRA AND THE JEWS

7.30-9pm, £15, £12 web advance

DR DOROTHY PETERS The idea of ‘Egypt’ aroused the imaginations of the people of the Dead Sea Scrolls, long after the to-and-fro migrations of their ancestral parents. They pondered purity and defilement, making enemies or friends, building boundaries or bridges. Intriguing parallels come from the migration stories via the Atlantic Park detention centre in Southampton.

7.30-9pm, £15, £12 web advance

PROFESSOR SARAH PEARCE Josephus paints a damning portrait of Cleopatra VII and her treatment of her Jewish subjects. Cleopatra is not only an enemy of the Jews of Alexandria but also a predator. To what extent does Josephus’ testimony stand up to scrutiny? This session will explore evidence of Cleopatra’s relationship with her Jewish subjects and suggests a more positive conclusion.

HERETICS: EXPLORING THE MEANING OF HERESY IN JUDAISM

These lectures are dedicated to the late Miriam and Aaron Djanogly

7.30-9pm, £20 per session, £36 for the 2 week course

DANIEL REISEL Sunday 21 February

THE PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE OF YIDDISH 4-6pm, £10 advance, £12 on the day

DOVID KATZ The lecture traces the obscure origins of Yiddish in the depths of Europe, tracing its twists and turns, intended to spread Jewish knowledge to modernist literature and become one of the world’s important bodies of prose, poetry, drama and scholarship, as well as more recently, a vehicle for both the political left and the religious right. From there, the lecture heads to the present and the future of the language.

Sunday 21 February

LITHUANIAN JEWRY IN TIME AND SPACE 7-9pm, £10 advance, £12 on the day

DOVID KATZ The Litvaks, a major Jewish tribe, trace their origins to 14th century Lithuania. In the 19th century, they played a big role in the rise of both Hebrew and Yiddish modern literature, and the East European Jewish incarnations of both Zionism and socialism. The lecture concludes with a survey of today’s remnant of Lithuanian Jewry, and its issues, in Eastern Europe and worldwide.

What makes something heretical? What is the role of the heretic? Whatever we might think, it surely takes courage to stand outside the consensus and rally against the status quo. This course will explore the motivation and often unhappy fate of famous heretics across Jewish history and assess the merit of their sacrifice.
