Welcome... This summer enjoy festivals, inspiring talks, unique performances and more at JW3. We’re excited to present our first ever Sephardi Festival: a two-day celebration of music, food, and history. The Einstein Festival marks the 100th anniversary of the publication of Albert Einstein’s work on general relativity with events such as Einstein: The Man and the Mystery. We’re also hosting a Ping Pong Festival to coincide with the Rio 2016 Olympics and Paralympics, featuring themed films, an exhibition of Ping Pong history in the Jewish community and the chance to play. Sunday Night Live returns with talks from renowned chef Yotam Ottolenghi and Man Booker Prize-winner Howard Jacobson. Other stage highlights include comedy from Shappi Khorsandi, award-winning play Echoes and the premiere of the 2016 Rayne Foundation Dance Commission, a new dance piece exploring Jewish culture and identity. Young professionals can enjoy an Israeli-themed Friday Night Dinner as part of our Israel Week, a 1920s-themed Prohibition Night and more. The Ivy House Music & Dance programme features The Strauss Dynasty with John Suchet, as well as a performance from Alina Ibragimova and Alison Rhind. We look forward to seeing you!

THE HOUSE BY THE LAKE: THOMAS HARDING IN CONVERSATION WITH TOM HOLLAND

7.30pm, £12 An evening dedicated to one of Britain’s most celebrated and prolific authors, featuring the world premiere of documentary The Hamlet of Canfield Gardens by Jill Campbell, combining vérité footage with traditional Jewish songs and Kops’ poetry. This will be followed with readings by Bernard Kops from This Room in the Sunlight, his recent collected volume of poems, selected from a lifetime’s work.

8pm, £12 The latest book by Thomas Harding (author of Hanns and Rudolf) reveals the story of Germany through the inhabitants of a small house. Moving from the late 19th century to the present, it’s a story of domestic joy and terrible grief. Harding discusses the book and the journey he took to write it in conversation with historian, writer and broadcaster Tom Holland.

A TRIBUTE TO MARGOT FONTEYN

7.30pm, £8 Devised by Peter Braithwaite: baritone, Nigel Foster: piano, this critical song-based performance is based on the infamous Degenerate Music (Entartete Musik) exhibition of 1938, intended by the Nazis to alert the German public to ‘inferior and ultimately dangerous’ forms of music, particularly jazz and Jewish music. Featuring works by Eisler, Brecht, Weill, Feuchtwanger, Hollaender, Tucholsky, Krenek and Schönberg, interspersed with spoken excerpts from the exhibition’s pamphlet, whilst video projections show scenes of everyday life during the Weimar Republic. FROM HITLER TO HI-DE-HI: WINTER 1938 3pm, £5 Mike Levy tells the story of the first arrivals of Jewish refugee children at a freezing cold holiday camp near Harwich, in winter 1938. Working with a school local to the camp, he has uncovered the stories of those who worked there, the kindness of the townsfolk and the experience of being alone in a strange country. The Haaretz Israel Conference Sunday 3 July 10am-5pm Haaretz is coming to London. Israel’s leading newspaper, which publishes in both Hebrew and English, will be holding its first ever conference in the UK this summer, in partnership with us. With a line-up of top Haaretz reporters, analysts and opinion-makers, including names such as Ari Shavit, Aluf Benn, Chemi Shalev, Allison Kaplan Sommer and Anshel Pfeffer, as well as leading politicians and community leaders from both Israel and the UK, the event promises to bring us lively, impassioned and high-level debate. Einstein Festival Tuesday 28 June - Monday 4 July We celebrate the life of a genius on the centenary of the publication of his work on general relativity. The many aspects to Albert Einstein range from his theory of relativity and love of music to his commitment to the State of Israel and deep involvement with The Hebrew University, Jerusalem. FIGHTING THE MENACE OF WAR: WHAT WOULD EINSTEIN SAY TODAY? 8pm, £12 DR COLINE COVINGTON, BARONESS SUSAN GREENFIELD, SIR MALCOLM RIFKIND, EMMA SKY OBE & DR DANIEL GLASER The issue of political violence (and ISIS in particular) is on the national agenda and at the forefront of everyone’s mind. Einstein’s question to Freud, ‘Is there any way of delivering mankind from the menace of war?’, raises crucial issues. The panel explore the menace of war and terrorism, from scientific and military deterrents to what role the media and the internet play, and how policy making at the top unravels on the ground. YOTAM OTTOLENGHI IN CONVERSATION

HOWARD JACOBSON

6.30pm, £15 Yotam Ottolenghi’s innovative take on Middle Eastern, Jewish and vegetarian cooking has changed the face of modern British cuisine. Here he talks about his life and career, from his beginnings in Jerusalem, to setting up the first Ottolenghi deli in London with Palestinian chef Sami Tamimi, opening his restaurant, NOPI, and becoming a vocal advocate for gay marriage, parenting and surrogacy.

6.30pm, £15 Experiences growing up in 1950s Manchester and dreaming of one day becoming table tennis world champion led Jacobson to write his semi-autobiographical tale, The Mighty Walzer. He brought lavish exoticism and sensuality to early Ballets Russes productions and enabled Sergei Diaghilev to realise his ideal of ballet as ‘total work of art’. He exercised a potent influence on the fashion and interior design of the early 20th century. Patrick Bade will introduce you to Bakst’s sumptuous art and glamorous world.
