THE STORY OF THE TALMUD
BEING A STRANGER
8-9.30pm, £12 per class, £40 for the course
8-9.30pm, £12 per class, £40 for the course
HARRY FREEDMAN
DANIEL REISEL
It’s been banned, censored and burnt. Henry VIII, Milton, Dante, Spinoza and Einstein all leafed through its pages. It is now studied by more people than at any time in its history. This four-week course is not about what’s in the Talmud. It is the story of what happened to the Talmud, and the role it has played in world history, religion and culture.
Israel is the homeland, the promised land, the source. And yet much of Jewish identity and literature was created outside of Israel. The experience of being the stranger informs our ethical behaviour towards the vulnerable. This four-week course explores the lessons the rabbis learnt from experiences of exile, and how the Other should be treated in contemporary Israel. Daniel is an NHS doctor and popular Jewish educator.
Harry Freedman is an academic and author. This course his based on his best-selling book The Talmud: A Biography.

PURIM FOR ATHEISTS
SLAVERY
8-9.30pm, £12
8-9.30pm, £12 per session, £30 for the course
ELIE JESNER If ever there was a festival which goes against the religious grain it would have to be Purim. Earnestness is banished as we bawdily embrace the intoxicated spirit of carnival. But how did this Godless book and festival slip past the censors and come to occupy a major place in the Jewish calendar? What lessons does it offer for those wrestling with the challenges of atheism in the modern world? Elie Jesner is a popular educator and writer, currently completing his training as a psychoanalytic psychotherapist.
ZAHAVIT SHALEV The festival of Pesach (Passover) commemorates freedom from slavery, and the Exodus story has been an inspirational narrative for liberation movements ever since. This three-week course explores the story and the laws of keeping a slave. Learn how the rabbinic tradition interpreted slavery at different times in history and what can it teach us about the urgent issue of slavery today. With Zahavit Shalev, educator and Rabbinical Assistant at New North London Synagogue.

FREEDOM
SEDER FOR ATHEISTS
7.30-10pm, £12 per session, £30 for the course
8-9.30pm, £12
JUSTIN WISE In the lead up to Pesach (Passover), the festival of freedom, this three-week course asks: what does it mean to live freely? Taking inspiration from traditional rabbinic texts, how do we recognise the constraints that trap us in our lives in order to become liberated and engage meaningfully in the world? With Justin Wise, organisation consultant, educator, philosopher, artist and musician.
7
ELIE JESNER If God didn’t lead the Jews out of Egypt, what could we talk about on Seder night? The ceremony encourages imagination, so we’ll be exploring the Exodus myth and its meaning in modern life. Today’s taskmasters are both internal to our psyche and subtly hidden in our social worlds, and Pesach (Passover) might just be the perfect time to confront them and try to break free. Elie Jesner is a psychoanalytic psychotherapist in London, and an educator at a variety of communal institutions.

KING LEAR: A PSYCHOANALYTIC PERSPECTIVE ON TROUBLING RELATIONSHIPS
7.30-9pm, £12
RAPHAIL SOFFER Iraqi Jews constitute one of the world’s oldest and most historically significant Jewish communities. Iraq as a modern state was created on 3 October, 1932 and the history of the Jews in Iraq is documented from the time of the Babylonian captivity circa 800 BC. The Jewish presence in this territory dates back to the time of Abraham; the Bible says that he left Ur for Canaan around 1800 BC. The influx of Jews into the territory of Iraq was not the result of a decision, but of two disasters. Come and learn more in these two lectures, delivered by Iraqi Jewry expert and keen historian Raphail Soffer.

LESSONS FROM THE CRASH 7.30-9pm, £12 per session, £30 for the course
ELIE JESNER & NEIL HAMBURGER In the sober light following the financial crisis that began in 2008, people have been thinking more about the damaging effects that inequality might be having on our society. Is more equality a desirable goal? Can it be balanced against the need for economic competitiveness in a global marketplace? Is inequality responsible for increased envy, anxiety and depression – including for those who are ‘better off’? This timely course will explore these contemporary political questions, with an eye on the 2015 general election. Neil Hamburger is a Cambridge University graduate in Economics who spent 13 years in the investment banking world. Elie Jesner is completing his training as a psychoanalytic psychotherapist. Elie worked in the derivatives markets for eight years.

Abraham and Sarah, Isaac and Rebecca, and Jacob with Leah and Rachel (not to mention Zilpah and Bilhah) are buried in prehistory. Long before any viable record can be relied upon, they lived and died. Unless, of course, you count the Bible as a viable record – and why not?

Clive, popular broadcaster and educator, unearths the patriarchs and matriarchs as you’ve never met them before, bedevilled by their challenges and uncertainties, charting fresh paths that would reverberate forever into the future, but exposing eternal human foibles and frailties that make their stories ours too.

POSSESSED: WHAT IS A DYBBUK?
IN THE LOOP
7.30-9pm, £10 per sessions, £25 for the course
MAUREEN KENDLER This course looks at the idea of the dybbuk – a dead soul that inhabits a living body and speaks through it, to accomplish a mission before it returns to the dead. We will examine the biblical origins of the idea and look at the medieval period where suddenly dybbuks were everywhere in the Jewish world with everyone talking and writing about them. Why do they then disappear? What replaces them? What did they represent and why did we need them? And if dybbuks were feared as a threat to the stability of the community, why in the 20th century did writers such as Sholem An-sky and Isaac Bashevis Singer lovingly rehabilitate them as bearing important truths? With Maureen Kendler, a noted Jewish educator broadcaster and writer.
