Between the revolutions of 1848 and the outbreak of World War I millions of Jews left behind the medieval world of the ghetto and the shtetl and entered the modern world. Thanks to railways, photography, mass media and other innovations of the Industrial Revolution it was a world that was changing more rapidly and radically than ever before. These changes were reflected in a succession of art movements from Impressionism to Cubism. In six lectures over three days Patrick Bade will explain these movements and explore the crucial role that Jews played as collectors, art dealers and critics.

1848-1948: A CENTURY OF JEWISH LIBERALISM 7.30-9pm, £6, £5 web advance PROFESSOR ABIGAIL GREEN From the revolutions of 1848 to the UN Declaration of Human Rights, Jews made a vital contribution to Western liberalism – as revolutionaries, government ministers, journalists, lawyers, social reformers, feminists and human rights activists. This lecture illuminates the lives and legacies of individual Jewish activists who became linchpins in the liberal movement on both sides of the Atlantic: from the ‘father of German democracy’ Johann Jacoby to postwar luminaries like Raphael Lemkin, Isaiah Berlin and Hannah Arendt. Thursday 10 November

JACOB AND ESAU, ISAAC AND ISHMAEL 7.30-9pm, £6, £5 web advance

Thursday 17 November

JEWS AND THE FRENCH REVOLUTION 7.30-9pm, £6, £5 web advance PROFESSOR LISA LEFF The French Revolution offered Jews the rights of citizenship for the very first time in their history. But did emancipation come at a cost? This lecture explores the ideological commitments that led French Revolutionaries to emancipate the Jews, the debates that were provoked by the proposition, and finally, the short- and long-term effects on Jews and French society as a whole.

PROFESSOR MALACHI HACOHEN Paul Celan’s 1959 poem, Jacob’s Voice, marked the radical changes which the Holocaust and the State of Israel triggered in Jews’ relations with Christians and Muslims. Jacob and Esau, representing Jews and Christians, were traditionally enemies. In the postwar years, they have reconciled. In contrast, Hebrew writers have criticised Jacob and showed sympathy for Esau. Isaac and Ishmael, representing Jews and Muslims, were traditionally less hostile, but now they have grown apart. This talk gives an overview of the changing dynamics of Jewish inclusion and inter-religious relations, seen from a Jewish perspective.

Thursday 24 November

JEWS, ROMA AND THE HOLOCAUST 7.30-9pm, £6, £5 web advance PROFESSOR ARI JOSKOWICZ This lecture explores the connections between Jewish and Romani history - from the killing fields of Hitler’s Europe to today’s Holocaust memorial culture. Discover how Jewish archives became central repositories of Romani narratives of suffering, in spite of the social distance between members of both groups. Ari will explore the origins of the situation and seek to understand what this does for our understanding of the groups’ history, and the ethicial implications.

BECOMING ANTISEMITIC: CONVERSION AND THE ORIGINS OF MODERN ANTISEMITISM 7.30-9pm, £6, £5 web advance PROFESSOR SIMON LEVIS SULLAM We examine the role of converts to Catholicism in France during the period 1850-1919 against the background of the rise of modern political antisemitism – especially in the 1870s and 1880s, before the Dreyfus affair. Most prominent antisemites were converts from Judaism or returning to Catholicism after a long oblivion. The lecture looks at the converts from Judaism, abbés Joseph and Augustine Lémann, and the prominent journalist and writer Edouard Drumont, ‘pope’ of antisemitism, all of whom had roles in the creation of modern antisemitism. Thursday 8 December

JEWISH CITIZENS OF AN ISLAMIC EMPIRE 7.30-9pm, £6, £5 web advance PROFESSOR JULIA PHILLIPS COHEN The Ottoman-Jewish story has long been told as a romance. The prevailing view is that Ottoman Jews were protected by the Ottoman government and in return offered their unflagging devotion to the empire over many centuries. In this talk, Julia Phillips Cohen offers a corrective, arguing that the modern Jewish leaders who promoted this vision were responding to a series of reforms enacted by the 19th century Ottoman state, which emancipated its non-Muslims and, in the process, created new expectations of allegiance.

Thursday 15 December

WHY ZIONISM AND JEWISH POLITICS MATTERED 7.30-9pm, £6, £5 web advance PROFESSOR MATT SILVER The essential formulas of early 21 st century Jewish life – the balance between secular and religious identities, the relationship between Israel and diaspora communities – became locked in place as a result of a series of dramatic events in key early 20th century Jewish communities, largely between 1903 and 1905. The way these categories – from political Zionism to the ‘melting pot’ ideology – interacted with one another, and crystallised as a result of a series of challenging events, has never been fully analysed and appreciated in its rich global context. This session will sketch the chain of events and ideological responses that produced our own particular orientations in Jewish life today.

Photography meets Yiddish literature. This course will take inspiration from Yiddish author and playwright Sholem Aleichem’s short stories, and will use them to explore how photography can be used to tell a story. You will learn how to construct narrative, depict characterisation and develop dramatic tension within a photography project. With photographer and teacher Asya Gefter.

Learn the basics of figurative sculpture in clay, working from a live model. Primarily concerned with form, this course will introduce professional techniques on how to observe the model, measure proportions and construct a sculpture of the full figure. We’ll aim to produce a 10 inch statue with a balance of anatomical accuracy and stylistic finish. Benedict Romain is a sculptor and experienced teacher.

LIFE DRAWING 7.30-9.30pm, £18 per session, £90 for the 7 week course BENEDICT ROMAIN When we talk about drawing from life, are we aware of what exactly it is that we are drawing? This life drawing class explores the many ways to see the human figure, including rising to the challenge of how as artists we can relate to the model not as an object to draw, but a sacred life. Benedict Romain is a sculptor and experienced teacher.

DR JOHN LAZARUS

Do you like poetry? Here’s a chance to understand why and to find out more about it. You may even be interested in writing some, or not! Come along anyway if you want to appreciate it.

Bellini wrote ten operas; both Mozart and Wagner wrote double that number. This autumn we focus on the one that is each composer’s calling card, his most intense drama. In Bellini’s Norma and in Wagner’s Tristan und Isolde, death fulfils a deep love; in Mozart’s Don Giovanni, death means death for the one who cannot love.
