10.30am–12noon, £12 per class, £30 for the course

HAGAI SEGAL

One of the strengths of the LJCC has always been the sense of belonging, which continues in the newly merged organisation. This is reflected in the Abraham Debating Club where you are invited to debate, listen and disagree over a wide range of controversial topics. No experience is needed, so come along and have your say! No booking necessary.

Are we seeing a rise in antisemitism, in the UK and Europe, or is the dynamic more complex than the headlines in the Jewish press? AntiEU, anti-austerity, anti-establishment, and even antisemitic parties have won polls across the continent, but is this a short-term protest vote, or have we seen a permanent lurch to the political extremes?

The emergence of ISIS, its huge territorial gains, and its horrific actions and tactics, has shocked the world. But what is it, what does it want, and why does it matter so much? Hagai, a renowned expert on Middle East affairs and terrorism, will explain all.

Explore the latest developments from the Middle East and the Israeli-Palestinian dynamic. What is the state of the peace process, what is going on in Israeli politics following the recent general election, and what can we expect in the weeks and months to come?

2-3.30pm, £16 pre-booked, £20 on the day

PROFESSOR SHLOMO BERGER

DR CÉSAR MERCHÁN-HAMANN

Why and how were Hebrew books brought to Dublin? Being a centre of Jewish book production during the 17th and 18th centuries, Amsterdam was the marketplace where London - and consequently Irish - Jews and Christian Hebraists could purchase books, study Judaism and Jewish tradition and expand their knowledge beyond that of the Hebrew Scriptures. While restricted in volume, Dublin collections of Jewish books demonstrate the growing interest in Jewish traditions as developed and understood in the early modern period.

The 17th century saw a flourishing of Hebrew and Jewish printing in Amsterdam, to such an extent that Dutch-Jewish printing dominated the European market for the next two centuries. We will explain why this came to happen and show how it ties in with the return of the Jews to those parts of Europe from which they had been expelled, and with the return to Judaism of those Jews forcibly converted to Christianity in Spain and Portugal. The printing of Jewish and Hebrew books in Amsterdam is one of the most important features of the remarkable thriving of Jewish life in the Netherlands.

THINKING JEWISH AFTER DARWIN AND NIETZSCHE 2-3.30pm, £16 pre-booked, £20 on the day

PROFESSOR IRENE ZWIEP The 19th century was an era of intense intellectual change. After the publication of Darwin’s On the Origin of Species in 1859, the relation between science and religion would never be the same again. Nietzsche’s critique of contemporary historiography hit home in the German academic world. How did these publications affect Jewish circles, where redefining Jewish religion and writing Jewish history had been the heart of the modernisation project? The curious case of historian and bibliographer Moritz Steinschneider (1816-1907) may help answer this question.

This course examines the history of the Vatican, its Popes and the relationship with Jews from medieval times until the 20th century. It is a tragic history marked by persecution, intolerance and the road to reconciliation and dialogue.

Sealed 800 years ago, this ‘Great Charter’ was a scene-setting statement of basic rights and constitutional law; it even had ‘Jew clauses’! We’ll explore humanitarian statements in other medieval charters and in declarations of the early modern period and the 20th century – including Israel’s Declaration of Independence. Underlying it all is the question: ‘What is a human right?’

MODERN JEWISH LITERATURE – FINDING AND SOUNDING OUR VOICES 10.30am-12.30pm, £192 for the course

DANIEL REISEL

MAUREEN KENDLER

Darwin’s theory of evolution turned the world upside down. We are still coming to terms with what it means to inhabit this strange, wonderful, yet often lethal, planet. Evolution is not merely a theory, it is a whole world view, which some argue excludes the possibility of God. This four-week course will travel to the heart of the Darwinian vision and ask what possibility there exists today for creating a vibrant, committed and hopeful religious life in a universe constructed more according to Darwin than Deuteronomy.

In this course we will look at fiction reflecting the multiplicity of voices in the Jewish diaspora experience: where the dybbuks of Isaac Bashevis Singer dance alongside Phillip Roth’s tefillin, Bernice Rubens’ dysfunctional family, Jacobson’s journeys, Auslander’s trauma, Brookner’s dinner table and Rosenthal’s bar mitzvah.

RATIONALISM VS MYSTICISM IN THE SEPHARDI WORLD 8-9.30pm, £15

WHO WROTE THE TORAH?

JOSEPH DWECK

12.15-1.45pm, £176 for the course

On the night of Lag B’Omer, the day when we celebrate the life of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, legendary author of the Zohar and master of Kabbalah, we ask if Judaism is a religion of reason and philosophy, or transcendent experiences? The Sephardi world contains both the mystical and the rational, and throughout Jewish history there has been tension between these two contrasting approaches. Rabbi Joseph Dweck is the spiritual head of the UK’s Spanish and Portuguese Jews’ Congregation.

ANGELA GLUCK The origin and authorship of the Torah is an exciting question but can also be explosive: ‘the fire of the Torah’ takes on a whole new meaning when communal sparks fly. We’ll examine how the question is handled across the Jewish spectrum and the political effects that it has — to divide and to unite. This course is full. Please contact us if you would like to be put on the waiting list.

VALERIA LATORRE

Take a walk around JW3’s neighbourhood with artist Ben Nathan and discover the complex patterns, architecture, and vistas in the area. AROUND THE BIBLE IN 80 PAINTINGS

SPRING IN ART

7-10pm, £12 per class, £60 for the course

GAYNA PELHAM

RINA WOLFSON Examine some of the most infamous stories of the Bible through the eyes of the world’s greatest artists. We’ll rediscover biblical stories of love, betrayal, regret and triumph with the help of masterpieces created by, among others, Caravaggio, Rubens, Rembrandt, Chagall and Klimt. What do these works add to our knowledge of biblical characters and events? Can these artists help us to see something hidden between the lines of the written text?

4-5pm, £7 The seasons, especially spring, have offered artists through the ages inspiration to express their emotional response to the world around them. Discover how landscapes bursting into bloom and farmers toiling in the fields have been portrayed by artists from the Middle Ages to the 21st century – from Bruegel to Braque and Patinir to Poussin. Exploring how secular and religious ideas have been combined in art, Gayna looks at Shavuot, the concluding festival of the grain harvest and the giving of the Torah. Part of JW3’s Shavuot celebrations See page 11 for other related events.
