Thursdays 15, 22 October | 5, 12, 19, 26 November | 3, 10, 17 December

MODERN BRITISH PRIME MINISTERS: 1900-2015

8-9am, £250 for the 9-part course, limited to 12 people, held at private premises in North West London

2-3.30pm £20 per session, £144 for the 9-part course

TRUDY GOLD This course will examine the social, political and cultural history of the Jews over the last 200 years. In an era of unprecedented opportunities, challenges and dangers they have gained rights but been the victims of the most savage onslaught in human history. They have established their own state, yet continue to be a focus of one of the world’s most intractable problems. Beginning with the French and American revolutions we will study the story of the Jews in an attempt to understand the bewildering world of today.

Thursdays 15, 22 October | 5, 12, 19, 26 November | 3, 10, 17 December

WAR IN THE EAST & THE COLLAPSE OF AN EMPIRE 10.30am-12.30pm £20 per session, £144 for the 9-part course

WILLIAM TYLER MBE As the 20th century opened, the AustroHungarian Empire was ruled by the ageing Franz Joseph, who was still Emperor at the outbreak of the First World War in 1914 – a war partly caused by Austria’s own actions. The war concluded with the destruction and dismemberment of his empire. This is one of the great stories of modern history, yet is little known in this country.

3

WILLIAM TYLER MBE From Lord Salisbury to David Cameron, our story will look at modern British political history, which saw a Canadian Prime Minister, the first Labour Prime Minister, the first woman Prime Minister and the last Liberal Prime Minister. Nationalist and Coalition Governments existed in times of peace and in times of war. Few would challenge the view that Winston Churchill was our greatest wartime leader, but who was the greatest Prime Minister? Asquith, Attlee, Thatcher, or another?

We will explore the immediate aftermath of the Holocaust and the emergence of the State of Israel. This course will be accompanied by the use of documents, newspaper articles and footage of the extraordinary events portrayed.

NUREMBERG: AN EVALUATION 70 YEARS ON

Tuesdays 3, 10, 17, 24 November | 1 December

VARIAN FRY

2-3.30pm £20 per session, £48 for the 3-part course

2-3.30pm £20 per session, £80 for the 5-part course

DR HELEN FRY

TRUDY GOLD & PATRICK BADE

For the 70th anniversary of Nuremberg, Helen Fry looks back at the significance of the trials and examines a little known aspect of that period – the life within the prison during the trials as Hitler’s henchmen awaited their fate. Whilst justice was exacted for many of the top Nazi leaders, some enduring mysteries remain, especially regarding Rudolf Hess.

Part of Nazi philosophy was to destroy any aspect of culture that was created by Jews, or contrary to their insane ideology. This fiveweek course will focus on wartime France and the fate of the artistic community. We will examine in particular Marseille, which was a centre for émigré cultural figures desperate to escape, focusing on the extraordinary Varian Fry who managed to rescue over 2,000 of the most important cultural figures in Europe. Our case study will be the colourful Alma Mahler and her third husband, Franz Werfel.

Wednesdays 25 November | 2, 9, 16 December

THE DIPLOMATS & SPIES WHO SAVED JEWS FROM THE NAZIS 2-3.30pm £20 per session, £64 for the 4-part course

DR HELEN FRY Helen Fry turns her attention to the diplomats and spies who, at great personal risk, saved hundreds, sometimes thousands, of Jews from the Nazis in the 1930s and during the early part of World War II. Little attention has been given to these unsung heroes. The course examines their rescue efforts and the sacrifices which they made, often going far beyond the call of duty.

MORE MODERN JEWISH LITERATURE

10am-12noon £20 per session, £144 for the 9-part course

ANGELA GLUCK Mysticism may be all the rage but classical Judaism is often thought of as rational and practical, not in the least touchy-feely. Yet, in exploring the ‘meaning of life’, Jewish mysticism has deep, ancient roots that sprouted new branches over the ages. There’ll be no Mystic Meg – and not much Monty Python or Madonna – just lots of intriguing Jewish ideas from a long period, all on the theme that there’s more to life than meets the eye.
