WHAT’S ON FAMILIES & YOUTH Interactive films, creative crafts and cookery classes keep families entertained from January to April. Our Family Fun Sundays are back, with a Revolting Recipes Cooking Workshop at Dahl Day, a celebration of trees at Tu B’Shvat and a Frozen sing-along at Winter Magic. After school, children are invited to get fit and have fun at Street Dance and bring out their inner artist at Little Chagall. New parents can enjoy Baby-Friendly Screenings in the JW3 Cinema, Antenatal Classes with Bump and Baby Club and JW3 Cooking Together. PETER AND THE WOLF FAMILY CLASSICAL CONCERT 2-3pm and 3.30-4.30pm £7 per child, £7 per adult Family price: £24 (2 adults and 2 children) The tuneful tale of a brave little boy’s adventurous encounter with a wolf is complemented by two other short Russian tales brimming with dazzling music. One features some fiendish fiddle-playing and the other tale – underscored by Ravel’s Bolero – features a woodcutter who keeps wishing for more. Suitable for ages 2+. Children must be accompanied by a paying adult.

CRAFTERNOON: PETER AND THE WOLF PUPPETS 2-5pm, FREE Our Crafternoon is inspired by Sergei Prokofiev’s classical score Peter and the Wolf. Come along and discover how to create puppets of the characters – the wolf, duck and cat. We’ll provide materials, inspiration and guidance. Then take your puppets home and watch them come alive as you recreate the concert in your own living room.

Sunday 25 January – Winter Magic January may be a long wintry month but we’ve got a theatrical tale to make it more magical!

A PAPER BALLOON PRODUCTION Liza has gone missing, and no one knows where she can be. One thing’s for certain: those mysterious Winter Sprites have something to do with it. Appearing every winter, these tiny elf-like creatures can be found hiding in pockets, shoes and sock drawers, watching everything and hearing everyone. And what is inside the mysterious strange white suitcase? Help find Liza in this captivating and funny blend of puppetry, shadow, storytelling and original songs. Suitable for ages 3+. FAMILY FUN FILMS: FROZEN SING-ALONG (PG) 1pm, £5 per child, £5 per adult Fearless optimist Princess Anna teams up with handsome Kristoff in an epic animated journey, encountering Everestlike conditions, and a hilarious snowman named Olaf in a race to find Anna’s sister Elsa, whose icy powers have trapped the kingdom in eternal winter. Sing to your heart’s content in JW3’s cozy cinema – the louder the better – with this modern classic for all the family. You’d need a heart of ice not to enjoy it. CRAFTERNOON: SNOWFLAKE MOBILE 2-5pm, FREE Did you know that no two snowflakes are the same? They certainly aren’t at JW3 where we’ll be creating our very own snowflake mobiles this Crafternoon. The sky outside may be grey, but here we’ll be making some very colourful decorations to cheer us up during the monotone months. Suitable for ages 2+. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Sunday 1 February – Tu B’Shvat Tu B’Shvat is almost here. Celebrate the birthday of trees with these tall tales!

A pop-up forest of imagination for adventurous families full of tall tales, colourful characters and playful performance. Come along and hear the stories of trees from lands afar, meet the creatures that inhabit them and taste their fruits and seeds. A special theatre commission by JW3 for Tu B’Shvat – the Jewish holiday that celebrates the New Year for trees.

It can sometimes seem a long way from Israel to London, so one Sunday every month, we’ll be putting on a proper Israeli get together, ‘K’mo B’bayit’ (just like home). And everyone’s invited. This week we will be staging an exciting musical activity in honour of the birthday of the trees. We will celebrate with the Israeli children’s songs and stories we grew up with, enjoy live music, play Tu B’Shvat games, and feel at home.

CRAFTERNOON: TU B’SHVAT TREE CUPS 2-5pm, FREE During Tu B’Shvat, we think about our connection to nature and celebrate the New Year for trees. Today, you can design and make your very own tree-inspired glass at JW3, then have it at home to use, put on display, or take to a Tu B’Shvat seder. Suitable for ages 2+. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

INTERACTIVE CINEMA: THE LORAX (U) 1pm, £8 per child, £8 per adult Interactive Cinema Special: what’s a world without trees? We’ll discover with the Lorax, the grumpy yet charming creature who fights to protect nature in this special JW3 treat for Tu B’Shvat.

Sunday 8 February – Jungle Sunday We’re monkeying round with some animal stories…

CRAFTERNOON WITH BAREFOOT BOOKS: THE ANIMAL BOOGIE AND MASK MAKING 2-5pm, FREE Join Barefoot Books to leap, stomp, shake and flap along with the animals of the Indian jungle. Let your children make a mask based on a character from The Animal Boogie or create a unique creature of their very own. Imagination and creativity are always encouraged at JW3. Then pop along to our unique Barefoot Books Fair and indulge all the family with books that stand out for their illustrations. We’ll also be having a short rhyme time storytelling session at 3pm and 4pm. Rhyme time for ages 1+ and over and craft activity for kids aged 3+ and over. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

FAMILY FUN FILMS: THE JUNGLE BOOK (U) 1pm, £5 per child, £5 per adult Journey to the depths of the jungle with this Disney all-time classic, inspired by Rudyard Kipling. Mowgli has grown up with wild animals, but now he is approaching manhood and it is time for him to rejoin human civilisation. The trouble is, he really doesn’t want to leave his friends behind. Bagheera the Panther and Baloo the Bear have a difficult time trying to convince him to go. Join us in the JW3 cinema and enjoy all your favourite songs with brilliant sound on the big screen. See if you can stop your feet from tapping along to The Bare Necessities – we’ve never managed it. Children must be accompanied by a paying adult.

A WORD PEPPER THEATRE PRODUCTION Enter an imaginative world of memories through poetry and incredible pop-up books in this funny and heart-warming adventure of complicated families and growing up. Sebastian’s memories aren’t like everyone else’s. His are wonderful poetic images from the pages of his colourful pop-up books and the treasure trove of his imagination. He remembers troll kings and mermaid queens, deep sea diving super heroes and city smashing dinosaurs. But there’s only one memory that takes particular pride of place. And that is of the very special gift that his dad bought him. Can you guess what it might be? There’s only one place to find out: JW3. Suitable for ages 5+. FAMILY FUN FILMS: TALES OF THE NIGHT (PG) 1pm, £5 per child, £5 per adult Tales of the Night weaves together six exotic fables to make a worldwide web of stories. Each tale unfolds in a unique location: from mysterious Tibet, to medieval Europe, to the Land of the Dead. Created by internationally renowned animator Michel Ocelot. Children must be accompanied by a paying adult.

CRAFTERNOON: POP-UP PLAYTIME 2-5pm, FREE Inspired by the performance of Pop-Up Flashback, we’ll be creating our own pop-up books and greeting cards. You can discover how to animate the page with different popup techniques and use a mix of styles to bring variety to your work. We’ll be using different types of paper, magazines and newspaper to create our own unique pop-up books and greeting cards together. Suitable for ages 2+. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Sunday 22 February – Dahl Day We’re celebrating the world of Roald Dahl with a festival of films, arts and some cooking-up mischief.

INTERACTIVE CINEMA: WILLY WONKA AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY (U)

Inspired by Roald Dahl we’ll be cooking up some revolting recipes in our one-off workshop. We’re raiding the cupboards to create George’s marvellous medicine, making worm spaghetti with food from Mr Twit’s beard and creating Willy Wonka’s Fizzy Lifting Drinks and Whipple-Scrumptious Fudgemallow Delight. To end the session we’ll make our very own snozzcumber – Dahlicious! This is not for the faint-hearted so grab your imagination and join in!

Come to JW3 and you’ll be in a land of pure family entertainment... Munch your way through Willy Wonka’s sweet-filled world in this scrumdiddlyumtious interactive cinema show. Grab a goodie bag and enjoy Gene Wilder as he brings Roald Dahl’s mysterious chocolatier to life in this classic family film. Expect to dance like an oompa loompa, find a golden ticket, take a psychedelic trip down a chocolate river and chew on some of our really rather strange chocolate experiments. Find out whether you’re a bad nut or if you can give Violet Beauregarde a run for her money.

Together Matilda and Miss Honey have to confront the worst parents anyone could conceive along with the most hideous headmistress ever imagined – Miss Trunchbull. This ever-popular children’s story is bought to life on screen by Danny DeVito.

And as part of our celebration of his work, we’ll be dedicating this Crafternoon to some of his most colourful and interesting characters. • Ready to catch some dreams? You will be once you’ve created your own BFG ears. • Snap! go the jaws of The Enormous Crocodile – create and animate. • Trick the silly farmers with your own Fantastic Mr Fox mask • Have you ever seen a roly-poly bird? Make your own and take it home. Suitable for ages 2+. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Jewish Book Week and JW3 present The Alternative Families Brunch with writer Andrew Solomon. Join us for an event dedicated to families in all their diversity. Tickets include a slapup Sunday brunch in Zest, our celebrated in-house restaurant. Afterwards, kids can make family poetry-portraits with artist Sophie Herxheimer, while adults listen to National Book Award-winning author, Andrew Solomon. Solomon ‘s latest book is the bestseller, Far From the Tree: Parents, Children and the Search for Identity. The book was chosen as one of the New York Times’ Ten Best Books of 2012 and described in the paper as ‘a book everyone should read… there’s no one who wouldn’t be a more imaginative and understanding parent – or human being – for having done so… a wise and beautiful book.’

Sunday 1 March – Purim Party Purim has arrived!

THE GREAT PURIM BAKE OFF

Ready, steady, bake: come and join us for a two-hour bake off style session with a professional chef in honour of Purim. You’ll be making mishloach manot (food gifts) either for your friends and family, or to donate to GIFT, a charity that gives support to almost 2000 people in the Jewish community – across the whole of London.

Travel to Esther’s kingdom – and join a swinging party with a Persian twist. Create masks from around the world, journey to circus lands, meet curious travellers with tricks to share, prop-up our mocktail bar and dance to your heart’s content in our masquerade ball with disco beats. JW3 is the place to be for Purim mayhem… So grab a mask and a costume and join the party.

Your challenge is to make: clementine cake, or lemon and poppy seed loaf and homemade jam and hamantaschen with either a date and walnut or plum filling.

There will also be an adult bake off at 7.30pm and seniors’ bake off at 3pm.

Sunday 8 March – Animal Stories Piggy tales head to JW3 – 100% kosher kiddie fun.

FAMILY FUN FILMS: PIGLET’S BIG MOVIE (U) 1pm, £5 per child, £5 per adult Oh no, Piglet has disappeared. His friends in the Hundred Acre Wood have the bright idea of using Piglet’s own Book of Memories to work out how they can track him down. Along the way, they find out just how important their little friend has been in all their lives. But do they manage to find Piglet himself? Come along and see for yourself with this marvellous Disney animation from 2003. Children must be accompanied by a paying adult.

CRAFTERNOON WITH BAREFOOT BOOKS: HOW BIG IS A PIG? 2-5pm, FREE Step inside the story and follow an inquisitive pig as he asks all kinds of barnyard animals a barrage of questions in this charming story from Barefoot Books. Learn how illustrator Clare Beaton creates her unique style and make a special little piggy of your very own. Experiment with bright colours and quirky beads for the ultimate super-pig ornament. Sunday 15 March – Creative Cookery Food Families Fun at JW3.

COOK US A STORY: WITH STEAMER THE COOKING WIZARD 2-3pm and 4-5pm, £10 Join us for a cooking masterclass, inspired by the original story of Steamer the Cooking Wizard. Hear Steamer’s tales unfold and create your own dishes – make delicious dips, design your own nourishing chocolate bars and take home some fresh pasta to share with friends and family. Enjoy the free storyreading and the chance to meet the author half an hour before the workshop starts. Suitable for ages 6-11. This is a drop-off event.

STORY TIME: STEAMER THE COOKING WIZARD 1.30-2pm and 3.30-4pm, FREE Steamer is not just any ordinary wizard, he is a cooking wizard – a master chef with a magical twist and a social conscience. Together with PJ Library, the programme that distributes free books to Jewish families, we’ll be exploring the worlds of our favourite Jewish books. A young Peruvian bear with a passion for all things British travels to London in search of a home. Finding himself lost and alone at Paddington Station, he begins to realise that city life is not all he had imagined – until he meets the kindly Brown family, who read the label around his neck (‘Please look after this bear. Let’s get creative with delicious recipes for Pesach. The festival of freedom does not have to mean overdosing on matza with chocolate spread. Your children will be excited and inspired by cooking healthy Pesach dishes with professional chef, Fabienne VinerLuzzato, dishes that will also leave them well fed and fully prepared for the festival. Each week the children will discover a different tale – from classical, to modern, from Biblical to Yiddish. Our lovely puppeteer, Alice Kristina Rose, has created pigs, wolves, princesses, frogs, ducklings and more and will bring these to life each session. Through this interactive storytelling, children will develop their imagination, enrich their vocabulary and get to socialise with their friends. Suitable for ages 2 1/2-6. We love to meet new people and make new friends, so every Thursday morning you’ll find a warm welcome at JW3. Drop in for informal play, songs, games, chat and activities for the little ones at our playgroup. SUPER SOCCER STARS 10.50am, £80 for course (£8 for trial session) At Super Soccer Stars, we use the ball as the vehicle to help children develop selfconfidence, improve gross motor skills, socialisation skills, coordination and stability building activities. Each class includes an introduction to physical activities, rich language exposure, and movements such as running, jumping and changing direction. Dynamic, local and international coaches work with small groups of boys and girls to develop these skills and teamwork in a fun, non-competitive, educational environment. Cooking is a really great way to help toddlers learn about numbers, colours, shapes, and discover different cultures and stories along the way. This season, we’ll be exploring recipes inspired by children’s stories from around the world. Toddlers will enjoy learning cooking techniques while creating delicious recipes based on their favourite tales – from porridge for Goldilocks to cornbread for the Little Red Hen. AUTISM: EARLY SIGNS AND COPING 8pm, FREE, Part of World Autism Awareness Day on 2 April Autism is a lifelong disorder. And while it can never be ‘cured’, finding the right support at the right time can make an enormous difference to people’s lives. In this talk, by Dr Debora Elijah and Dr Stella Acquarone, we will cover the early signs in autistic spectrum, and early parenting intervention with children who have social communication difficulties. Dr Debora Elijah Ph.D is a Cognitive Neuropsychologist. She is Director of the Elijah Social Cognitive Therapy Skills Centre for early intervention in North West London. Dr Elijah is presenting on behalf of Conquer and Learn charity. Dr Stella Acquarone Ph.D (Psychology) is the Director of the Parent-Infant Clinic and of the School of Infant Mental Health in London.

Want to learn to bake? Rise to the challenge with Habonim Dror. You’ll be baking for a good cause as well as for your own entertainment.

MOTHER’S DAY CUPCAKE WAR 4pm, £15 per team Spend Mother’s Day engaged in a cake war. We’ll begin with a one-hour cupcake decorating master class. First, you’ll be guided through some fun and creative designs by expert cake decorator Marguerite Bunt from Oooga Patisserie. Then it’s time to put your skills to the test. In teams of two (one adult, one teenager) you will compete in a cupcake showdown. Each team will decorate six cupcakes. The cupcakes will be judged and a winner declared. Bring it on. Adar is the Jewish month of joyfulness. Come and get into the Purim mood by taking part in The Great Adar Prank Off. You’ll have the chance to learn how to pull off genius practical jokes and pranks. The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is the world’s leading achievement award for young people. This year JLGB will be running Kosher and Shabbat-friendly expeditions in partnership with JW3. END OF TERM RELAXATION NIGHT 5.30-7.30pm, £12 So much to do and so little time to do it. Is that what teenage life feels like to you? So many exciting opportunities that you’re constantly on the go? No wonder you feel tired sometimes. Come along to our special end of term class designed to teach you techniques to combat the stresses of everyday life. This session is specifically designed to help students facing GCSEs, AS or A-levels both relax and rejuvenate. The evening will be a mixture of meditation stretches and breathing exercises helping you to relax and get in tune with your mind and body. Suitable for ages 14+.

WORK EXPERIENCE Looking for somewhere a little bit different to complete your work experience? Come to JW3 where you will gain a broad experience across our different departments. You won’t be spending your time filling in spreadsheets or stuffing envelopes. We will give you fun and interesting tasks.
