ISRAEL MINI SEASON
66 years
The Party and the Political JW3 is hosting its first Israel Mini Season, 66 years after the birth of the State of Israel – nine days of reflection, celebration and conversation. The Hatikva, the Israeli national anthem, speaks of being a “free people in our land” – what does that mean in the modern world? Between Yom Ha’Shoah (Holocaust Day) and Yom Ha’Atzma’ut (Israeli Independence Day), a packed nine days of events will explore themes of survival, diversity and Judaism in Israel, rooted in the knowledge that with Israel, nothing’s black and white, everything’s complex and multi-coloured.
We’re bringing the party to the political, and whatever your relationship with Israel, why not join us to: • • • • •

SHLECTURE – ROBBIE GRINGRAS AND ADAM MADER HACKERS FOR SOCIAL JUSTICE – MEET ISRAEL’S WORKSHOP FOR PUBLIC INFORMATION What were Israel’s Social Justice protests all about? GAGA MOVEMENT CLASS FOR ALL
10.30am, £5 BY HAGAI SEGAL
10.30am, £10 (students £5)
66 years after the State of Israel declared its independent in May 1948 we reflect on the dramatic and surprising events and stories surrounding that historic day. The Declaration itself may have drawn all the attention, but if the events behind the scenes in the run-up had gone differently – and they nearly did – the declaration may not have even been made that day... Or the State of Israel may have been named something different altogether!

SONGS IN MEMORY 10.30am, £5 BY ROBBIE GRINGRAS
CINEMA
How do we remember? For the past 12 years Israel’s Army Radio station has commissioned top music artists to create songs from the writings of fallen soldiers. We will dig into the song and video clip of Knisyat Ha’Sechel, who adapted a poem from Erez Stark – a victim of Israel’s horrendous helicopter crash in 1997. We’ll explore the music, the video, the song, and the two commemorative monuments of the crash – the unofficial parents’ monument, and that of the government.
We have specially curated a selection of Jewish and Israeli films which will be screened over the Israel Mini Season period. Thrilling and moving films that touch on survival and war, diversity and solidarity, creativity and commemoration, the Israel-Palestine conflict, and the beauty of Israel – deeply exploring what it means to be a free people in our land. We are delighted to be including a number of special screenings with our partner, UK Jewish Film, including the highly recommended Cupcakes with Q&A with director Eytan Fox.
