CAFÉ SOCIETY SWING

OUR CARNAL HEARTS

8pm, £15

8pm, £12

Café Society Swing follows the legendary New York venue’s thrilling struggles and triumphs, to its eventual demise in America’s ‘Red Scare’ of the late 1940s. Created by the child of Latvian Jewish immigrants, from 1938 to 1949 Café Society played host to some of the finest talent of the 20th century, including Billie Holiday, Lena Horne, Sarah Vaughan and Count Basie. The show stars Vimala Rowe and Ciyo Brown and features some of the UK’s finest jazz musicians, directed by show author and Musical Director Alex Webb. ‘Rich and gorgeous music… A buoyant revue wrapped around a bit of New York history.’ The New York Times

Our Carnal Hearts (pictured, front cover) is a contemporary theatrical performance, with a live surround sound choral score, written by and starring Rachel Mars. At this time of admission of wrongdoing in the Jewish calendar, Our Carnal Hearts celebrates envy, and offers a joyous call for everyone we’ve ever wanted to be and everything we’ve ever wanted to own. A place to whoop at our own fragility and delight against our better nature. A toast to our competitive spirits and a rumbling dance for the ugly gutter-tramping parts of our souls. ‘A show of wit and verve that - aptly - hides a dark heart.’ Louise Stephens, Royal Court Theatre

Written and performed by Peter Reder. Music by Sean O’Hagan. Developed at Battersea Arts Centre.

A mother and daughter. A lifetime. But what becomes of that bond, when one of you knows only the present moment – Monday, 3.36pm? ‘You said you’d never forget me, but you have.’ ‘You said you’d love me forever, but you don’t know who I am…’ Developed via Royal Court Theatre in 2015 with Associate Director Lucy Morrison and cast including Anna Calder-Marshall.

PATRICK BADE

PATRICK BADE

Caravaggio was the ‘bad boy’ of the Baroque. Much of what we know about him comes from criminal records. His brutal, sensual and profoundly spiritual art continues to fascinate us, as it did his contemporaries. The National Gallery’s winter exhibition Beyond Caravaggio will explore his impact on the art of the 17th century. In this Know Before You Go, Patrick Bade will attempt to illuminate the darkly mysterious world of Caravaggio and Caravaggism.

Paul Nash was a peculiarly British modernist and perhaps the only artist to produce iconic images of the two world wars. Patrick Bade will introduce a major retrospective of Nash’s work to be held at Tate Britain this autumn and give an insight into the man and his work.

This is the extraordinary story of the diplomat hunted down by his government for rescuing thousands of Jews in the Holocaust. Diane Barnett, a barrister for 23 years, recently gained an MRes in Jewish History & Culture from the University of Southampton.

Is Israel a pariah state as much of the all too prevalent anti-Zionist invective seems to indicate? Or is this invective something more sinister? Jeremy Havardi and Keith Kahn-Harris will debate whether anti-Zionism is a contemporary form of antisemitism or whether it is merely related to criticism of actions taken by Israel.
