We’re very excited to be hosting a Friday Night Dinner with Friday Night Dinner, including a meal, screening of episodes and discussion with cast members from the hit Channel 4 series. The JW3 Cinema will be screening new releases, Live Arts on the Big Screen and the best of Jewish and Israeli film from UK Jewish Film and SERET. Foodies Film Club is back with a film-inspired cooking class, followed by a screening. Among our talks and discussions are Israeli Elections – One Month On, Sigmund Freud’s Sculptor and Food: Enemy or Friend? Trips and walks include visits to Hampstead and The National Archives, Kew. KATHRYN WILLIAMS ALBUM LAUNCH 8pm, £15 Kathryn has been making music to critical acclaim for 15 years. In that time she has had a Mercury nomination and worked with John Martyn, Ray LaMontagne, Bombay Bicycle Club, David Gray, Neill MacColl and The Be Good Tanyas amongst many others. Caitlin Moran said ‘she should be paid a million pounds to not stop singing’. After being given a commission by New Writing North to write songs celebrating Sylvia Plath at the Durham Book Festival, Kathryn wrote a set of songs inspired by characters from The Bell Jar. The album Hypoxia, her 11th to date, will be released on One Little Indian Records this summer. Its producer Ed Harcourt describes it as ’a dark masterpiece that grows and hooks into your heart’. SHEMIRAH: STAGED READING 7.30pm, FREE, booking essential

Shavuot

Join us for this free staged reading of Shemirah, a play by Shivaun Woolfson directed by Trilby James.

Sunday 17 May

Shemirah takes place over the course of one night as 12-year old Roisin sits guard over the body of her grandfather Pop. As the night unfolds, Roisin slips between real time and memory, and the audience is transported to 1960s Jewish Dublin. Based loosely on the memoir Home Fires by Shivaun Woolfson, Shemirah is the story of a young girl straining under the weight of competing agendas, as she forges her own path, transcending her turbulent world through the gift of magic, story and redemption bequeathed by her beloved Pop. The man who was blind, she realises, was the one who saw it all.

BOUNDARY WALK

Thursday 14 May

EVERYBODY SWING 7.30pm, £12 Swing into action with JW3’s first ever intergenerational swing dance celebration. Come together and shake off the cobwebs, under the guidance of the London Swing Dance Society. With live music from the Stew Curtis Band and an introduction to swing for beginners. This promises to be a great night out for the young and young at heart, featuring music from the 40s and 50s along with some unexpected tunes.

Part of the Jewish people’s preparation before receiving the Torah was to create a boundary on Mount Sinai, and we will echo this by marking our own boundaries at JW3. Join artist Simone Kenyon on a group walk in NW3; marking out the physical boundaries of JW3 and exploring the less tangible preparations we make for new ideas and experiences. This contemplative and celebratory walk starts and finishes at JW3 with a Shavuot serenade. Please wear clothes and footwear suitable for walking in whatever the day’s weather. For other Shavuot events see our Classes & Courses and Families & FUSION season guides.

ABOVE AND BEYOND: THE UNTOLD TRUE STORY

JUNG AND FILM - CREATIVITY AND MADNESS: THE HORSE WHISPERER

7pm, £12

9.30am, £15 for each event (£12 CAP members) During 2015, JW3 in partnership with the Confederation of Analytical Psychology (CAP) presents a series of seminars in the JW3 Cinema. Each incorporates a short introductory lecture, film screening and post-screening discussion. Lecturers are Christopher Hauke (Jungian analyst, senior lecturer in psychoanalytic studies at Goldsmiths, University of London and author of numerous film publications), Dr Helena Bassil-Morozow (cultural philosopher, film scholar and writer of many academic publications on film) or Dr Gottfried M Heuer (Jungian training analyst and supervisor, NeoReichian body-psychotherapist). The seminars are open to anyone with an interest in cinema, Jungian psychology and psychoanalysis, They take place between 9.45am and 12.30pm, with registration from 9.30am. In 1948, just three years after the liberation of Nazi death camps, a group of Jewish American pilots answered a call for help. In secret and at great personal risk, they smuggled planes out of the US and flew for Israel in its War of Independence. The first major feature-length documentary about foreign airmen in the ’48 War, Above and Beyond brings together new interviews as well as stunning aerial footage to present a fascinating, little-known tale filled with heart, heroism and high-flying chutzpah.

April’s seminar is on Robert Redford’s The Horse Whisperer (1998). Coming up later in the year: A Dangerous Method, Sunday 5 July Amadeus, Sunday 20 September A Beautiful Mind, Sunday 8 November The JW3 Cinema screens a weekly mix of the best of new releases from around the world, plus Jewish and Israeli films curated by our partner UK Jewish Film. BENTE KAHAN: SONGS OF THE GHETTO

UNSUNG HEROINES

7.30pm, £8

The stories of two remarkable women, Eleanor Rathbone and Greta Burkill, who made an important contribution to the lives of many refugees and Kindertransportees have been largely overlooked. Dr Susan Cohen (Parkes Institute, University of Southampton) and Mike Levy, (Keystage Arts and Heritage), will discuss their acts of humanity and selfless philanthropy. The programme includes songs by the Yiddish songwriter Mordechai Gebirtig, poems by Max Hermann-Neisse (Germany 1936), Ilse Weber (Theresienstadt) and the contemporary Polish poet Tadeusz Różewicz set to music by Bente herself, as well as monologues from her play Voices from Theresienstadt and concert HOME. BARBARA JACKSON – DANCE OF LIFE: THE STORY OF A GERMAN JEWISH FAMILY

JULIE HELD - LIVING MEMORIES: A LIFE LIVING IN PORTRAITS

To commemorate Yom Ha’Shoah, artist Barbara Jackson will once again be exhibiting at Ivy House. Her new exhibition will focus on a collection of paintings, etchings and mixed media works that tell the story of her family’s flight from Europe in the 1930s.

This exhibition will focus on portraits of artist Julie Held and her family painted throughout her career. Subjects include her father Peter, who remains one of her favourite models, and her late mother Gisela, painted from memory as she died when the artist was just 18.
