THE 2000 YEAR OLD MAN 8pm £10 Monday-Wednesday, £12.50 Thursday, Saturday, Sunday

BY MEL BROOKS & CARL REINER, ADAPTED BY KERRY SHALE, DIRECTED BY MATTHEW LLOYD JW3 presents a specially commissioned live re-creation of Mel Brooks and Carl Reiner’s legendary double act, taken from their five iconic albums. In 1961, a comedy record was released in which an interviewer questioned a man who had seen the entire history of civilisation. When The 2000 Year Old Man recalled his memories and opinions in a thick Yiddish accent, comedy was never the same! His devoted fans range from The Queen to Larry David. Actor Kerry Shale is The 2000 Year Old Man. Comedian Chris Neill is The Interviewer. Running time: 60 minutes.

VUONG 10

7.30pm, £20

7.30pm, £10

HOFESH SHECHTER

An exploration of human interactions in the digital age, created and performed by exceptional talents.

Hofesh Shechter, recognised as one of the UK’s most exciting artists, gives a fascinating insight in to Sun, the recent smash hit success at Sadler’s Wells. In this rare event, he discusses his creative process and the crystallisation of his vision. The event includes performances by Hofesh Shechter Company of sections created for Sun that were lost to the cutting room floor – magnificent, funny and difficult pieces that could have been in Sun, but finally weren’t. This is a unique chance to experience some extraordinary rarely seen choreography and share in some of the secrets of Hofesh’s creation process. ‘ Hofesh Shechter looks set to do for dance what the YBA’s did for art, which is to propel it from an elite periphery into the mainstream.’ – The Independent

Choreographers Nina Kov (Place Prize semi-finalist 2012) and Catarina Carvalho (Wayne McGregor | Random Dance), with a special contribution by Michael-John Harper (Wayne McGregor | Random Dance), have been working with musicians Leafcutter John (Polar Bear) and Max Baillie (Aurora Orchestra) to investigate human connections and response to the music. VUONG 10 explores the yearning for physical communication in an era of disconnection, against a backdrop of an incredible new soundtrack.

Your chance to share a real experience with real people rather than one that you ‘share’ on Facebook. The National Day of Unplugging is a 24-hour period – running from sundown to sundown on 6 & 7 March. The project was inspired by The Sabbath Manifesto, an idea generated by Reboot.

An original one-woman show about a highly original woman – with songs. Before women had the right to vote, daredevil reporter Nellie Bly spent ten days in a madhouse, went round the world in 72 days, became an elephant trainer and reported on the violent Pullman strikes of Chicago, in favour of the strikers. Funny, fast-paced and enlightening, The Adventures of Nellie Bly is for adults and children over 11. Weekend of Women is a celebration of International Women’s Day.

Judaism and Islam not only share an identity as ‘people of the book,’ they are also people of the image. Despite their differences, this is an important place to begin for both scholarly analysis and interfaith dialogue. In this lecture we will look at several key themes running from antiquity to the present, including similarities between Jewish and early Islamic art; (re)imagining the Temple of Solomon; illustrations of biblical tales; architecture in medieval Spain; and parallels in modern art.

CONFLICTING IMAGES: ART AND WAR TODAY 7pm, £12

AARON ROSEN Wars today are waged not only on the ground but also through images. While some artists, particularly photographers, seek to document conflicts, others have attempted to use art as a means of protest, healing, or simply survival. In the midst of the over-heated rhetoric surrounding the Arab-Israeli conflict, for instance, visual art can at least prompt new conversations. We will look at powerful, sometimes disturbing images from across the world, from the Middle East to Central Africa.

ESTHER THROUGH ART 7pm, £12

AARON ROSEN AND CAROLYN ROSEN The Book of Esther is, first and foremost, a great story. It has inspired literature, art, and theatre in Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Esther was first illustrated in the synagogue frescoes at Dura-Europos. In the middle ages, the great poet Shāhīn of Shiraz adapted the Book of Esther to local tradition, joining Persian and Jewish histories. In 1689 Jean Racine devoted one of his most famous dramas to Esther, while contemporary visual artists have imagined Esther as a proto-feminist. Carolyn Rosen has recently submitted her PhD thesis on French theatre and is currently studying to become an Anglican priest. Dr. Aaron Rosen is lecturer in Sacred Traditions and the Arts at King’s College, London.

27

For centuries, Easter was a fearful time for Jews, afraid to leave their homes lest they be attacked for purportedly killing Jesus. This painful history sometimes resurfaces today, as in Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ. Yet Easter is also a time when many Christians today look to the Jewish origins of Christianity, seeking to attend seders, for instance, for an insight into the last days of Jesus. Together, we will explore what Easter means for Jewish-Christian relations today. Carolyn Rosen has recently submitted her PhD thesis on French theatre and is currently studying to become an Anglican priest. Dr. Aaron Rosen is lecturer in Sacred Traditions and the Arts at King’s College, London.
