SHTREIML & ISMAIL FENCIOGLU: JEWISH ROOTS AND TURKISH BLUES
7.30pm, £15 After sell-out shows and rave reviews in New York and the West End, don’t miss the chance to see Café Society Swing at JW3. The show tells the true story of the legendary New York nightclub which promoted racial equality and great music. From 1938 to 1949, Café Society played host to legendary names including Billie Holiday, Lena Horne, Sarah Vaughan and Count Basie.
Enchanting and ornate, Ismail Fencioglu is a rare talent whose soaring vocals and fleet fingered oud playing conjure images of the Bosphorus at sunset and transport the listener to a different time and place. Together with Shtreiml, led by Jason Rosenblatt, one of the world’s premier harmonica players, the ensemble performs compelling original music rooted in the Jewish and Ottoman traditions, but brimming with hard rock sensibilities and dexterous improvisational know-how. Featuring Jason Rosenblatt (harmonica, piano, vocals), Ismail Fencioglu (oud, vocals), Rachel Lemisch (trombone), Thierry Arsenault (drums) and Joel Kerr (bass).

KAFKA & SON
THEATRE OF THE WANDERING WEST
Saturday 8pm, Sunday 12noon £15
At the age of 36 Franz Kafka was still living at home, a petty bureaucrat, failed artist, and timid Jewish son. Ruling and ruining his life was his overbearing father, Hermann. Kafka wrote a 50-page letter to his father in which he reveals deep connections between his life and his fiction. As he confesses in the letter, ‘all my writing was about you’. Adapted from this monumental (and undelivered) letter, Kafka & Son is a blistering, often hilarious, dissection of domestic authority, and a revelatory visit with one of the architects of the modern psyche. Kafka & Son features actor Alon Nashman, selected as Toronto’s number one theatre artist of 2008 by NOW magazine.
8.30pm, £15
Experience the strange poetry of Kafka’s diary entries, brought to life by The Cabinet of Living Cinema. In 1911 Franz Kafka encountered a Yiddish theatre company who were travelling through Prague. He was mesmerised by one particular actress, Millie Chissick, and moved to record his impressions in his diary. Over a hundred years later Millie’s great-great-grandson has brought to life the actress’s journey with a travelling Yiddish theatre, including the encounter with Kafka. The story is told through beautiful handdrawn illustrated films intercut with excerpts from classic Yiddish film The Dybbuk (1937) along with a live score of Yiddish ballads and roaring klezmer. The performance is followed by two short films exploring the theme of metamorphosis; a classic 1972 Russian animation, Butterfly, and a contemporary short by Andrei Sopon, Becoming (2012), in which a horse discovers he is no longer a horse.

Worse, she has no money, a best friend with a better sex life than her, a daughter in Papua New Guinea and too much weight in places she really doesn’t want. Can a middle-aged woman really have it all? Losing It is a hilarious, brutally honest exploration of a woman who still feels 30 but can’t deny the odd stray grey…

She was a leading exponent of Austrian Ausdruckstanz in the 1920s and 1930s, who in Britain pioneered dance therapy and performance with dancers with learning disabilities. This year will see the centenary of Arthur Miller, the greatest Jewish playwright of the 20th century. Seventy years after his most famous plays, Death of a Salesman and The Crucible, does Miller still speak to modern audiences? Is he still fresh and relevant, and if so, why?
Francisco de Goya is one of Spain’s most celebrated artists. He was considered a supremely gifted portrait painter and an excellent social commentator who took the genre of portraiture to new heights through his ability to reveal the psychology of his sitter. Patrick will look at Goya the person and the artist. Goya: The Portraits is at the National Gallery from 7 October 2015 to 10 January 2016.
David Herman produced TV and radio programmes with Miller and has taught courses on modern Jewish literature.

YOM KIPPUR FOR EATERS 10.30am-12.30pm, £15 in advance, £20 on the day
CLIVE LAWTON In this rather iconoclastic session, we’re going to try to sidestep the humbug and achieve a little honesty about what actually goes on on Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement): what the point of it is supposed to be, why Jews turn out in unparalleled numbers for the most interminable and repetitious services of the year and what realistically they might try to get out of it.
25
10.30am-3.30pm, £30 in advance, £35 on the day In this day seminar we will look at the origins of the Gregorian calendar followed by the secular world, the various Christian calendars and their origins, the Muslim calendar, Eastern calendars, and the Jewish calendar. We will also look at what Clive claims to be ‘the cutest calendar of all’ – invented in the 19th century and followed by about 10 million people, and we might even consider why the French Revolution couldn’t get its decimal calendar off the ground.
