We have packed the next few months with another fantastic range of performances, classes, courses, talks, discussions, concerts, plays, kids’ activities, and much more. Keep a look out for events such as Sunday Night Live with Alexandra Shulman (p5); Bertolt Brecht’s chilling one-act play, The Jewish Wife (p52); internationally acclaimed German singer Ute Lemper: Songs for Eternity (p3); A Midsummer Night’s Dream adapted especially for families (p27); uFoodie, the UK’s only cookery school with a kosher kitchen (p58-59); the new The Making of the Sephardim course, led by the popular educator Richard Goldstein; and our ever-growing film programme of the best of Jewish and Israeli cinema, the summer’s best new releases, Live Arts on Screen, Special Screenings, and Film Studies talks and courses – all in our luxuriously comfortable boutique Cinema (p12-17). We’ll also be marking the milestone 70th year of Israel’s Independence with a diverse range of events for all ages, including an unmissable Yom Ha’atzmaut Party (p20), and an exclusive evening with former Israeli Prime Minister, Ehud Barak (p21). And as if that wasn’t enough, we’re excited to announce the return of the Hampstead Beach at JW3, free for all throughout July and August. So, grab your bucket and spade, settle on the sand with a fresh Zest cocktail and sample our new summer menu from London’s best kosher restaurant. Incredibly, sometime in the coming months we’ll be celebrating welcoming our ONE MILLIONTH VISITOR to JW3. Whether that’s you or not, I look forward to seeing you soon. ADULT LEARNING | TALKS & DISCUSSIONS

What can we learn from Baruch Spinoza? with Harris Bor Tuesdays 5-19 June 2 - 3.30pm | Classes £20 per session £48 for the 3 sessions

Baruch Spinoza

Baruch (later Benedict) Spinoza (1632-1677) is considered to be one of the most important rationalist philosophers and forerunners of the 18th-century Enlightenment, but is best known in Jewish circles for having been excommunicated from the Jewish community on account of his heretical world-views. This short course aims to provide an insight into Spinoza’s main philosophical ideas and asks whether they have any relevance for contemporary society or our own spiritual lives.

How to Deal with and Recognise Narcissism with Mickey Yudkin

Hampton Court with Stephen Burstin

Sunday 29 April | 1.30 - 5.30pm £22 | Talk

Wednesday 13 June | 7.30 - 9pm | Talk £15 | £12 Online early bird

Explore Narcissism, an excessive preoccupation with the self at the expense of relating and connecting with others. Narcissism is often defensive hiding shame, depression and a fragile sense of self. We’ll examine what shapes Narcissistic personalities, learning to understand this phenomenon in individuals, society and culture.

Join Stephen Burstin for a magical lecture about Hampton Court Palace, former home of the notorious King Henry VIII, and discover incredible Jewish anecdotes on this virtual tour as you learn the fate of Henry’s six (unfortunate) wives; see the amazing surviving Tudor kitchens; the awesome Great Hall that lavishly fed and entertained 800 guests a day; the luscious gardens that took three years to create and a few seconds to destroy; and many other fascinating sights and stories.

Poetry, stories, pair and group work and the theories of Freud, Cooper and Maxwell will help us in our exploration.

At every moment, we face ethical choices. Some we can reflect—or even consult—upon; others need a splitsecond response. Some are palpably mega issues, like the use of physical violence in conflict or the tension between freedom of expression and hate crimes. Others appear to pose smaller-scale questions. Angela will explore varied real-life situations and allow Jewish tradition to shine its bright light on both their content and the decision-making process. *No session 7, 21 and 28 May **No session 9, 23 and 30 May

Tuesdays 3 & 10 July 10.30am - 12.30pm £20 per session £35 for the 2 week course

Throughout our history, groups of Jews have held different opinions, sometimes forming sects within Judaism and sometimes breaking away. We’ll examine some of these fascinating groups, starting with the Samaritans and ending up with the messianic branch of Chabad. In between we’ll take a look at Pharisees and Sadducees, the first (Jewish) Christians, Karaites, Shabateans, and the Hassidim, who were muchmaligned sect but won a central place in mainstream Judaism. *No session 23 and 30 May

The End of Days - What have we got to look forward to? In this two part programme, Clive will explore what, if anything useful, Jews have to say about the end of days, the Day of Judgement, the Messiah, the Messianic age, life after death, the purpose of life and other small matters.

HOLOCAUST EDUCATION JW3 is dedicated to honouring the Holocaust, and we will commemorate Yom Hashoah in April with a performance of Bertolt Brecht’s play, The Jewish Wife. We will also mark the anniversary of the Nazi “Burning of the Books” with an evening discussing Ben Helfgott’s incredible life story, with the author of his new biography Michael Freedland in conversation with Daniel Finkelstein.

Bertolt Brecht

Michelle Hyer Holocaust Education Programmer

Bertolt Brecht’s The Jewish Wife Wednesday 11 April | 7.30pm | £8 | Performance First performed eighty years ago, Bertolt Brecht’s chilling one-act play, The Jewish Wife, is a chronicle of everyday German life at the dawn of the Nazi regime. As the Third Reich tightens its grip, relationships contort and fear and suspicion penetrate every layer of society. Katharina Reinthaller directs this exclusive performance with actors Susanna Fiore and Peter Halpin and pianist Ilan Lazarus. Followed by a short Yom HaShoah ceremony led by Rabbi Roni Tabick and singer Aaron Isaac.

Third Generation: The Holocaust and Me with David Polak Sunday 10 June | 11am | £8

Ben Helfgott - One of the Boys Thursday 24 May | 7.30pm £18 | £14 Online early bird To mark the anniversary of the Burning of the Books, Michael Freedland and Daniel Finkelstein discuss Michael’s new book on one of the Jewish Community’s most remarkable and iconic figures, Ben Helfgott - The Story of One of the Boys. Ben – Holocaust survivor, Olympic athlete and successful businessman – is a hero of our community. This event is in conjunction with Jewish Book Week and Vallentine Mitchell Publishers.

Grandchildren of survivors and refugees are invited to join a discussion group where we will explore the significance of the Holocaust in our own lives. We will be asking: To what extent do the events of the past impact on our identities, our relationships with the world and on our own sense of Jewishness? What sense or meaning do we make of our parents’ and grandparents’ experiences and how does this inform the ways in which we live our own lives today? We may leave with more questions than answers, but to join the discussion is to begin the search for a deeper sense of self. David Polak is a psychotherapist and grandchild of survivors. This session is specifically for the Third Generation.

My Partner is Second Generation, I am not with Gaby Glassman Sunday 17 June | 2pm | £8

Being Second Generation with Gaby Glassman Sunday 3 June | 11am | £8 More than 70 years after the Holocaust, children of survivors and refugees will explore together how it has affected their lives. Specifically for Second Generation. Tickets 020 7433 8988 jw3.org.uk

What have you done today to make you feel proud? Sometime in the coming months our one millionth visitor will cross the bridge and join us at JW3. Maybe to take a class in Jewish history, or dance at a Klezmer music concert or perhaps to come to celebrate Israel’s 70th. They may be part of a family, coming to a Funday Sunday Crafternoon activity, or a new parent attending a baby yoga session, or a teenager on Youth Leadership Training, or a Young Professional coming to a JW3 Friday Night Dinner or a Holocaust survivor meeting school kids. We don’t mind what they - or the 999,999 people we welcomed before them - enjoy most about JW3. For us what’s important is that people from all walks of life, across all strands of the community and beyond have found a way of connecting with Jewish culture and Jewish community through JW3. And that makes us feel proud. Especially as we start to look back on some of our achievements in our 5th anniversary year. But to continue to be ‘open to all’ for the next 5 years - and beyond – we need your help. 40% of our funding comes from personal donations, without which we simply wouldn’t be in the ‘connections business’. So, please consider making a donation. You can donate online with every ticket purchase, visit jw3.org.uk/donate or contact Yasmin in our Development Team on 020 7433 8975 to discuss making a donation or leaving a legacy. Thank you for your support.
