MAMA LOSCHEN, SPOKEN WORD SALON: FATHERHOOD 8pm, £6 Hosted by Sam Berkson, with Jonny Fluffypunk and poetry open mic. After Father’s Day, it is time to consider what fatherhood means and who better to lead us in the exploration than coffee house layabout, armchair revolutionary and poet Jonny Fluffypunk – now father of two. Man Up Jonny Fluffypunk is a funny, off-the-wall and poignant lo-fi stand-up spoken word theatre show about big dreams and little victories, about fatherhood and finding the hero within, however unpromising the exterior. Sam Berkson will be using the key Jewish texts of The Binding of Isaac, Alexander Baron’s The Lowlife and James Joyce’s Ulysses to make his own contribution to the theme.

MRS ROBINSON I PRESUME + THE GRADUATE 7pm, £15 (reading), £10 (film) £20 (double bill) Join us for a live reading of a brand new radio play from Tracy-Ann Oberman, recently aired on BBC Radio 4. Oberman transports us to the early 60s when Hollywood was on the cusp of change. Discover how multiOscar-winning film The Graduate really shouldn’t have been made at all. And how a bunch of outsiders, the sort of ethnic oddball antitheses of the traditional star – Dustin Hoffman, Mike Nichols, Larry Turman, Mel Brooks, Gene Hackman and Anne Bancroft – all managed to break into a world that didn’t really want them. After the reading we’ll be screening The Graduate. The 1967 classic centres on recent college graduate Benjamin Braddock (Dustin Hoffman) who begins an affair with Mrs. Robinson (Anne Bancroft) – the wife of his father’s business partner, and then finds himself falling in love with her daughter, Elaine.

John Copley’s keen stagecraft and loving attention to period and dramatic detail make his production a masterpiece of realism, while Julia Trevelyan Oman’s designs evoke the atmosphere of 19th century Paris. Several of today’s greatest opera stars return to bid farewell to this sublime staging, notably Anna Netrebko as Mimì and Joseph Calleja as her lover, Rodolfo.

Virtue and vice, transcendent love and realpolitik combine in Shakespeare’s greatest exploration of the conflicting claims of sex and power, all expressed in a tragic poetry of breathtaking beauty and magnificence. The Globe’s 2014 envisioning of this iconic play encapsulates these themes whilst deftly threading a sense of comedy throughout.
Take one pair of estranged twin brothers (both called Antipholus), and one pair of estranged twin servants (both called Dromio), keep them in ignorance of each other and throw them into a city with a reputation for sorcery, and you have all the ingredients for theatrical chaos. The final Globe On Screen film for 2015 brings the perfect light relief to close an epic season of war and tragedy.

10am, £16 in advance, £20 on the day
PATRICK BADE Tate Modern is showing the first major retrospective of Sonia Delaunay’s work. Alongside her vibrant paintings the exhibition will show how she was one of the first modern artists to apply notions of abstraction to everyday objects, creating murals, mosaics, books, posters, stage costumes and even decorating cars. She merged the notion of art and fashion, moved into commercial production and her clothes were worn by American socialites, French film starts and Surrealist poets. A Russian Jew who formed a power partnership with her husband, French Cubist Robert Delaunay, Patrick will show how powerful she was in her own right.
Thursdays 25 June
THE GREATEST ARTISTS: DID THEIR AGE MATTER? 4pm, £7 in advance, £10 on the day
GAYNA PELHAM In this exploration of paintings through the ages, Gayna Pelham, practising artist and art history lecturer at The National Gallery, looks at the contrast between artists who died young and artists who lived well into old age. How did age inform their creative work? Examining artists whose lives were cut short but who left an indelible mark in the artistic world and those artists whose art matured late in life, she will look at Caravaggio, Titian and Rembrandt and Chagall, Monet and Modigliani.
Images of artists caught in the act of observing themselves have a peculiarly compelling quality and often seem to jump off the wall and grab the attention of the viewer, in a way that rarely happens with commissioned portraits. Patrick will look at the history of self-portraits from Dürer to Freud, taking in such greats as Van Dyck, Rembrandt, Van Gogh and Schiele, but also some extraordinarily vivid and memorable self-portraits by lesser-known artists.

WALLENBERG AND RESCUE

DAN STONE
TRUDY GOLD
Most survivors of the Holocaust, if they did not die after liberation, were mentally scarred for life by their experiences. Relying largely on eyewitnesses, this talk focuses on the days, months, and years following the Allies reaching the camps, revealing the complexities of liberation. Academic and author Dan Stone is Professor of Modern History at Royal Holloway, University of London, where he also actively involved in the running of the Holocaust Research Centre.
The Holocaust marks the nadir of Western civilisation. The majority of the population of Europe were either bystanders, collaborators or murderers. Even in darkness, there are individuals who turn towards the light. One of the greatest stars was Raoul Wallenberg – the Swedish diplomat, who shone brightly and rescued thousands. Tragically, his good deeds did not go unpunished and he ended in a Soviet hell. Nevertheless, his name will live on.

DON’T GET MARRIED GIRLS
PAGANISM
2pm, £16 in advance, £20 on the day
2pm, £16 in advance, £20 on the day
CLIVE LAWTON
CLIVE LAWTON
Now that gay marriage is a legal possibility, and various claims are being made for the natural proclivities of human beings as simply another primate species, the institution of marriage is once again under the spotlight. What purpose does it serve today? Is it an outmoded institution left over from bygone years of male domination or is it the essential building block of stable families and societies? Different ages and cultures have viewed it differently, so is marriage obvious or absurd?
In recent years, more and more people are prepared to label themselves pagans. Until recently, the word was loaded with negatives and carried with it images of ravaging hordes destroying ‘civilisation’. So why would anyone want to call themselves by such a name? Perhaps more intriguingly still, many who do turn out to be living middle class lives in suburbia. So who are the new pagans and is there anything we can learn from them?

JEWISH WORLD IN 1945-1948 2pm, £16 in advance, £20 on the day
TRUDY GOLD
In 1945, the horror of the Holocaust revealed that a third of all world Jewry had been murdered and their civilisation all but destroyed. What were the options facing the survivors? Many who returned home were met with hostility or even murder. Yet out of this despair, the Zionist movement was there to fulfil one of its major aims – the creation of a Jewish state. This lecture will examine some of the most important years ever in the history of the Jewish people.

WHAT BASTILLE DAY STARTED SEX VERSUS SURVIVAL: THE REAL STORY OF 2pm, £16 in advance, £20 on the day SABINA SPIELREIN CLIVE LAWTON
The storming of the Bastille is commonly identified as the start of the French Revolution. The French Revolution is widely seen as the start of… what? Its echoes certainly live on strongly, for example in the invocation of its slogans in the aftermath of January’s terror attacks in France. Are we still the children of the revolution or is that a romantic notion long overtaken by events?
