EXHIBITIONS Visit jw3.org.uk/exhibitions for more details and opening times.

Holocaust by Bullets 8 - 29 May, FREE Between 1941 and 1944, over 2 million Jews were massacred when Nazi Germany invaded the Soviet Union. Until recently, this chapter of Holocaust history was relatively unknown. In 2004, Father Patrick Desbois initiated an ongoing effort to thoroughly research it. His ‘Yahad - In Unum’ research teams ask the aging witnesses to share their memories and videotape their testimony, in order to identify and record each site of mass execution of Jews, Roma and other victims, to make sure that their traces do not disappear from the earth and that they can be respectfully memorialised. This exhibition by Yahad - In Unum has been seen by hundreds of thousands of people across the world. We are proud to be bringing it to the UK for the first time, exclusively at JW3. Join Father Patrick Desbois, the founder of Yahad - In Unum, for a special keynote lecture on Tuesday 9 May at 7.30pm (£12, £10 web advance). See p12 for the related event Reflections on a Mass Grave, 23 May.

A TRUMP DOCTRINE FOR THE MIDDLE EAST?

STEPHEN BURSTIN

2pm, £20, £16 web advance

Tour guide Stephen Burstin takes you on a virtual tour through the East End to discover the marvellous achievements of some wonderful people and the diabolical (sometimes hilarious) antics of unsavoury characters, all of whom lived, worked or left their mark in the Old Jewish Quarter.

JONATHAN PARIS The Trump Doctrine views political Islam as an ideological challenge, and looks at the Middle East mainly through the prism of terrorism and aggressive jihadism. It sees Iran as part of the problem and posits a central role for America’s allies like Israel to provide an anchor of stability for a highly unstable region.

In this talk and discussion, writer and curator Dr Richard Martin and Dr Jessica Rapson, Lecturer in Culture, Media and Creative Industries at King’s College London, explore a range of approaches towards memorialising the past, paying particular attention to how the sites and events of the Holocaust have been remembered. Wednesdays 26 April | 19 July

In the early 1940s, Peter Bergson launched a campaign to pressure the Roosevelt Administration to save the Jews, only to find himself attacked by the organised American Jewish leadership, who argued that such ‘special pleading’ risked stoking antisemitism. Filmmaker Pierre Sauvage has produced a powerful account of Bergson’s rescue efforts and will be part of the panel and audience discussion for this first UK showing of the film. He’ll be joined by former Jewish Chronicle editor Ned Temko and award-winning journalist, author and broadcaster Jonathan Freedland.

SECOND GENERATION: THEIR PAST, OUR FUTURE 11.30am, £7.50 GABY GLASSMAN More than 70 years after the Holocaust, children of survivors and refugees will explore how it has affected, and continues to affect, their lives. The workshop will be led by Gaby Glassman, a psychologist and psychotherapist who has facilitated second generation and intergenerational groups in the UK and abroad since the 1980s. Sunday 11 June

2pm, £20, £16 web advance

THIRD GENERATION: DREAMING OF THE HOLOCAUST

DR HELEN FRY

11am, £7.50 DAVID POLAK

We’ll examine what the British Secret Services, MI5 and MI6, knew about the Holocaust and when. The mass and detail of material being gathered was staggering. Why was the evidence not used at Nuremberg and even more importantly, why did the Allies not bomb the concentration camps and railway lines? We’ll see the shocking evidence that has come to light, raising important questions.

The unconscious transmission of Holocaust trauma across the generations is well documented. The third generation (grandchildren of survivors and refugees) may find themselves dreaming in Holocaust imagery or manifesting other signs and symptoms of an unresolved trauma. Join in this discussion group to connect with others similarly affected. David Polak is a psychoanalytic psychotherapist and grandchild of holocaust survivors. He regularly gives talks and facilitates groups on the theme of transgenerational trauma.

JEW SUSS

A KID FOR TWO FARTHINGS

Unlike the Nazi’s horrifically antisemitic version, this 1934 adaptation of Lion Feuchtwanger’s novel offers a more sympathetic portrait of a Jewish man (Conrad Veidt) who seeks political power.

A boy believes his pet goat may be a unicorn, in this representation of the Jewish community around Petticoat Lane from 1954. Warm and charming, with a lovely performance from David Kossoff.
