Welcome TO JW3 As we kick off our new season and a new year, I’m delighted to introduce our new Season Guide, filled with a whole host of events, festivals and activities for your delectation and delight. We have packed the first few months of 2019 with another fantastic range of performances, classes, courses, talks, discussions, concerts, plays, kids’ activities, and much more. Keep a look out for events such as Sunday Night Live with Simon Sebag-Montefiore (p16); Trayf by Lindsay Joelle (p10); our hugely popular Purimon Purim celebration for families (p50); Kim Bodnia & The Danish ‘Miracle Rescue’ of 1943 (p29); The Power of Unreason with Hagai Segal (p36); and our ever-growing film programme of the best of Jewish and Israeli cinema, the summer’s best new releases, Live Arts on Screen, Special Screenings, and Film Talks – all in our oh-so comfortable boutique Cinema (p20-25). We’ve also got some stand-out festivals and series this year which you won’t want to miss out on. The Oxford Series (p38) returns to JW3, with some world class speakers delving into some fascinating subjects. I’m also personally excited to announce a thrilling bill of events for International Women’s Day 2019 (p8), celebrating in true JW3 style: with a brilliant concert, performance and discussion. And I’m beyond delighted that global Israeli superstar Idan Raichel (p6) will be returning to JW3 this season, with an intimate solo performance for two nights. Our partners have also provided some truly outstanding content which we’re delighted to be hosting at JW3 this season, from Kinoteka, the Polish Film Festival to Jewish Book Week, which returns in March with some brilliant sessions for all you bookworms. And keep an eye on your email inbox for more high quality events in our Alan Howard-JW3 Speaker Series to be announced during the months ahead. I look forward to seeing you soon.

Director of Programming I’m returning to JW3, one baby richer, after a year away. Our work here, in this wonderful Jewish space where everyone is welcome, seems more important today than ever. Our programme of activities strives to reinforce, for ourselves and for the wider world, the positive aspects of Jewish life and culture in the face of well-reported negativity. So which aspects of Jewish culture am I most proud of? Certainly the belief that status is accorded to the most learned, that each of us is on a lifelong journey of exploration, and that learning rests on robust and generous disputation. Here at JW3 we offer opportunities to learn all day every day – to study and debate not just Jewish topics but politics, creative writing, poetry, languages, new plays, Hebrew calligraphy, film studies, social history and so much more.
or talk to any 13-16 year olds you know about Project ImpACT - the regular, accredited volunteering scheme on a Sunday evening. For me the unstoppable, dependable safety net (or obstacle course) of the rhythm of the Jewish year is a prize asset. And here we have our own rhythms too. Daily preschool activities, classes and café society give way to evening performances, Krav Maga and elegant dining. Under all the bustle, our week has its well-worn grooves: family Crafternoons on a Sunday, ‘Babykino’ cinema screenings on Monday, Films for a Fiver all day Tuesday, ‘Brains at Breakfast’ on Wednesdays, our debating club run by and for its members on Thursday, ‘Shababoom’ music and challah baking on Fridays. And on Shabbat… we rest.
I’m inspired by the emphasis on the importance of community; working as a collective to support the differing needs of all. This season we are offering sessions on tackling mental health problems and on paediatric first aid, and running a regular play group for children with developmental delays. And for a creative way to support others, we invite you to participate in ‘Kvell Your Darlings’, our first ever presentation of theatrical works in progress where your feedback will help the writers improve their scripts.
Seasonally our calendar flexes to reflect the broad interests of our community, and this season we’re celebrating every age of womanhood for International Women’s Day, the creativity that comes from destruction in our Art Salon, and the sheer joy of music with the return of favourites including Battle of the Dad Bands and The Beatles Sing-a-long.
I’m humbled by ‘Tikkun Olam’ – our duty to try and heal a broken world. Come just once a month on a Wednesday evening and bake challah to help combat hunger,
see for yourself. It’s good to be back.
By supporting and participating in our programme of activities we say to the world: Judaism has much to offer and nothing to fear – come into our big glass building and

You don’t need to be male, or have reproduced, you just need to be old enough to know better and young enough to remember your musical ambitions. If this is you, then visit jw3.org.uk/dadband19 and apply for the opportunity to perform on the JW3 stage. A selection of bands will be chosen, and a percentage of the ticket income will be donated to the winners’ charity of choice.
Following last summer’s packed Simon & Garfunkel Sing-a-long, musicians Gideon Conn and Tom Briggs are back with Rubber Soul and Revolver, remembering the time when Sean Connery was Bond, James Callaghan was the taxman and The Beatles ruled the world. Bring your finest voices, harmonies, and reconnect with these two iconic albums that defined their generation.

Yiddish in German-Jewish Culture: Middle Ages to WW2 with Dr Aya Elyada Wednesday 30 January 7.30 - 9.30pm £15 | £12 Online early bird
From the simmering conflict between the two nations throughout The Middle Ages, Scotland’s King finally became England’s King in 1603. Yet the two countries were not legally united until 1707. That Union has changed in recent years with devolution, and the possibility of reverting to a pre 1603 political situation is now far from impossible to imagine. *No session 21 and 28 February
This lecture explores the long and turbulent history of Yiddish within German-Jewish culture from premodern times and up to the Second World War. Drawing on a wide range of examples, it sheds light on a fascinating yet relatively unknown chapter in the history of the Jews in the German-speaking world.

Unprecedented public cynicism for official information - driven by the avalanche of fake news that has accompanied Brexit and the Trump election, and now by ‘post-fact’ and ‘alternate fact’ narratives from populist leaders across the Western world - has created a poisonous climate that extremist elements have been praying for. Why is this happening, and what is and can be done about it, by the authorities and by ordinary members of the public?
From the dawn of time people have put up barriers between themselves and their neighbours. These borders have been disputed, argued and fought over, pulled down and put up again. We shall look at a number of such borders over history; from The Great Wall of China and Hadrian’s Wall through colonial borders imposed on Africa and The Middle East, and The Berlin Wall, to issues of today including Ireland and Gibraltar, India, The Moroccan Sand Wall, and not forgetting Donald Trump’s Wall.

OXFORD SERIES
Josephus On Trial with Professor Martin Goodman Thursday 10 January 7.30 - 9pm £8 | £6 Online early bird The writings of Josephus are the primary source of our knowledge of Jewish History in the late Second Temple period, but for the last two centuries many Jews have treated his evidence as tainted because of his political career during and after the Jewish war against Rome, which ended in the destruction of the Temple in 70 CE. The lecture will examine the origins of Jewish hostility to Josephus and the ambivalence of Jewish attitudes to his worth as a historian over the past two centuries.

And our many other supporters and members.
With thanks to you - we have a lot to be proud of! Having recently celebrated both our 5th Anniversary and the One Millionth visit to our Jewish Community Centre, we think we’ve all got a lot to celebrate at JW3. Every week thousands of people from across the community and beyond walk across our bridge for one of over 150 events, activities, discussions, debates, classes, courses, films, performances, workshops, social action projects, volunteering opportunities, interfaith programmes, meals, Family Fun Days, festivals, or even just to meet old friends or make new ones. But our work is just half the story. You may or may not realise that JW3 is a registered charity, with an ambitious Vision and Mission focused on strengthening British-Jewish life through arts, culture, learning and community. And that whilst we invest as much of our revenues as possible back into our charitable activities, we rely, like all charities, on the generosity of individuals, families and foundations to carry out our vital work. With your continued support, we know that in the next five years, we can continue to increase the quality, variety and volume of Jewish conversation. So, please consider making a donation. You can donate online with every ticket purchase, visit jw3.org.uk/donate or contact our Development Team on 020 7433 8963 to discuss making a donation or leaving a legacy. Thank you.
