Preparing your house to sell involves several key steps, but one of the most important things you can do is to ensure that your house makes a positive first impression on potential buyers. Here are a few crucial steps to consider:
1. Clean and declutter: Make your house appear spacious and inviting by thoroughly cleaning every room and removing excess clutter. Organize closets and storage spaces to showcase their capacity.
2. Depersonalize and neutralize: Buyers should be able to envision themselves living in your house. Remove personal photographs, unique decorations, and overly bold color choices. Opt for neutral colors that appeal to a broader range of buyers.
3. Make necessary repairs: Attend to any visible repairs, such as leaky faucets, chipped paint, or broken fixtures. Buyers appreciate a well-maintained property, and addressing these issues can enhance the appeal and value of your home. I provide a Pre-Listing Inspection service to all of my clients, ensuring you are fully informed about the
condition of your home. With this service, you will gain valuable insights and help prevent potential issues during the sale of your home.
4. Enhance curb appeal: The exterior of your house sets the tone for potential buyers. Ensure your lawn is well-maintained, plant flowers or shrubs, trim trees, clean the driveway, and consider giving the front door a fresh coat of paint along with a welcome mat.
5. Stage strategically: Arrange furniture and decor in a way that highlights the best features of each room and creates an inviting atmosphere. A Staging Professional on my team helps prepare your home for the market!
Yes, having a pool can often be considered a significant feature when selling a house. Pools can enhance the overall appeal and value of a property, especially in regions with warm climates where outdoor leisure activities are popular. However, the impact of a pool when selling a house can vary depending on factors such as location, local market trends, and buyer preferences. It’s always important to consider the specific market dynamics in your area when evaluating the significance of a pool for selling your house.

Our August issue is packed to the brim with inspiring individuals. Brazil native Lucia Matos started her career as an opera conductor. After having to cut short this first career due to hearing problems, she rediscovered her creative voice in clay. Her beautifully minimalist pieces convey a sense of calm and wonder. And three of her pieces were part of an exhibition in Paris this past February. Andrea Knowles is also an artist, albeit one who works on a much larger scale platform—custom equine residences. Designing projects across the globe, Knowles turns equine property dreams into realities for her clients with her company, Equine Residences.
Looking to the start of the school year, local child model Sela Eden Anderson models some of the newest looks just in time for all your back-to-school shopping. If online shopping is your preference, expand your purchases with Redwood Tack—a saddle retailer that sells saddles ranging from CWD to Hermès. Our Up Front opener highlights a beautiful book, Equestrian Life in the Hamptons, full of imagery of horse lovers and their homes.
Travel across the world in First Class to the storied country of Oman and the Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar Resort. Feast your eyes on the gorgeous Malibu, Charleston, and Barrington properties in this month’s Luxury Offerings.
On a somber note, I was greatly saddened to learn of the death of Olympic ski jumper Patrick Gasienica whom we profiled in our December issue. Our entire team offers our sincerest condolences to his family during this tragic time.

Shana Vitek is an Equity Partner at Beermann LLP, the largest family law firm in Illinois. For the past 20 years, she has practiced divorce and family law exclusively. She handles a wide range of cases, including divorces for business owners, high-profile and high-net-worth clients. Vitek’s ability to handle any type of case has allowed her to become one of only a handful of attorneys in Illinois to be Board Certified in Family Trial Law by the National Board of Trial Advocacy. She is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers and serves on the Board of Governors for the Illinois Chapter. “Every family is different, so each case that we handle needs an individualized approach,” she says. “I enjoy going to court and arguing my client’s position, but that typically isn’t a client’s first choice.” In addition to being a litigator, Vitek is also a trained mediator, arbitrator, and collaborative attorney. If a case can be handled using a cooperative approach, that is her preferred process as it allows the parties to decide what is best for their family and maintain confidentiality, keeping personal matters out of the public record. Vitek believes it is important to give back to the community. She is Chair of the Beermann LLP Family Law Clinic. In partnership with Chicago Volunteer Legal Services, this first of its kind family law clinic provides pro bono legal services to individuals going through domestic relations proceedings who could not otherwise afford legal representation. “We feel strongly about giving back to the community, and given the size of our firm, we are in a unique position to make a big difference for clients who would otherwise go unrepresented in family law matters,” says Vitek. the dentist has all of the information, the patient’s teeth are scanned and emailed to the laboratory for the next step.
Dental technicians had to use impressions of teeth when making the blueprint for a new smile. They used wax that they added to the models of the teeth and then carved the wax into the shape of what the new teeth should look like. This was called a “wax-up.” Today we use a digital scan of the teeth and the blueprint is created digitally. The technician can merge the new design into photographs of the patient so that we can see if our cosmetic goals are being met. Once the dentist approves the digital blueprint, the technician digitally prints models and guides for the dentist to use while he is preparing the teeth for their new cosmetic restorations.
Cosmetic and restorative dentistry is like many other fields. It requires planning and execution with a talented team that can perform their individual responsibilities. One of the members of this team is the laboratory technician that helps create the blueprint for a new smile.
When creating a new smile for a patient, the dentist listens to the patient’s concerns and reviews expectations with them. They will sit together and look at close-up photographs of the “before” smile and list all the changes that need to be made. This includes length, width, color, shape, translucency, position, and gum relationships. The patient is encouraged to bring photographs of smiles they like so we can use it as a communication tool. Once
This process is such an advantage for the patient. When they visit for their preparation appointment, they leave with temporary restorations that look exactly like the blueprint. They get an entire week to smile with them, eat with them and speak with them. At their one week follow up visit, we ask if there are any changes they would like to make. In most cases, the answer is no but if they wish to make a change in length or shape, we can make those changes in the temporary restorations. Once the patient approves, we scan the temporary restorations and send it to the lab so that they know exactly how to make the final porcelain restorations. This way there are no surprises and the patient ends up with the smile of their dreams.

When Kim
married her husband, Joe Howard, she entered a fourth-generation Barrington family that included a late grandfather who was a golf pro at Biltmore Country Club, a “Character Counts” award-winning mother-in-law who has worked at St. Anne’s for over 25 years, and her husband who grew up in the Village with his two brothers. With a one-yearold daughter and another little girl on the way, Howard’s time is balanced between being a working mom, staying active in the community when she can, and spending time with friends and family (her parents reside close by in Mokena). A creative at heart, Howard appeared on American Idol in college, has performed at various professional sporting events, Chicago’s Big Break three years ago, and has won 26 other singing competitions. She loves music and the arts and embraces her creative side during the day as a Digital Marketing Director for a luxury and independent hotel portfolio. She also cochaired two events for the Barrington Junior Women’s Club, including a Spring Social and most recently the HOPE Dinner in December of 2022.

.FScott Fitzgerald famously opined, “There are no second acts in American life.” But in reality, folks reinvent themselves all the time. Whether out of necessity or restlessness, they learn new skills, change their lifestyles, jump into new careers. Count Lucia Matos among them. Trained as a musician, she found her conducting career curtailed when she developed hearing issues. The last time she held a baton in front of an orchestra was in 2018 with the Illinois Valley Symphony, of which she was the Music Director for nine years. While she continues a life in music, teaching conducting and music theory as an associate professor at the Northern Illinois University School of Music, Matos has taken on a new artistic challenge.
“One day, after watching a video about Portugal that showed its beautiful ceramic tiles, my husband, Alex—a painter—said that he would like to try to make them, and for that, he would need to get a little kiln,” shares Matos. He never pursued the idea, but she did.
Matos, who was born in Brazil, was always strongly drawn to music. She remembers being captivated at age 2 by a cousin playing the piano. A few years later, she begged her parents for piano lessons. “Later, majoring in music at Universidade Estadual de Campinas in São Pau-
lo, I had the opportunity to conduct a professional orchestra, and that day changed my life forever,” says Matos. “I had memorized Schubert’s “Unfinished Symphony,” and as I gave the preparation for the beginning of the symphony and heard the cellos and basses with their deep, resonating tones, I knew that this was what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.”
Giving up conducting wasn’t easy. “The three years between my last orchestra concert and my first pottery class were extremely challenging. There was a lot of grief, and I felt lost. I recall writing down my intentions for the year on New Year’s Eve 2021, with ‘Find Purpose’ being first and foremost. It was more of a wish than an intention at the time, but that wish became a reality that summer when I discovered ceramics.”
Matos began her journey in ceramics studying with Neil Estrick in Grayslake and Kristen Walk at Harper College. Week-long workshops with veteran potters Sarah Wells Rolland in North Carolina and Danny Meisinger in Kansas amplified her education. “From the very beginning, I embraced clay with much dedication,” says Matos who lives in South Barrington with her husband and three stepchildren. “The process of creating handmade ceramics is intricate and involves multiple steps—shaping the wet clay at the wheel, letting it dry, trimming the form, firing it for the first time, glazing it and firing it for a second time. The glaze is an art in itself. The combination of minerals, oxygen, and heat determines the chemical reactions and physical changes that happen. You can spend a lifetime studying and experimenting with it.”
Working primarily at the wheel, Matos creates one-of-a-kind vessels, bowl-like forms that open like a flower, rounded pieces that beg to be held in two hands, and tapered, bottle-like objects. In color, these range from not-quite-white to a silvery gray, to a deep blue just a shade or two away from International Klein Blue, the hue formulated by French artist Yves Klein, in the 1960s. Sometimes, she sketches out an idea in the notebook she carries wherever she goes. At others, she improvises at the wheel. “I do love those sessions,” she says, “when I am completely free.” No matter what shape the clay eventually takes, Matos hopes her pieces stand as pleasing, self-possessed companions that provide relief from our “technology-dominated, over-stimulated lives.”
Although Matos no longer wields a baton as she once did, working with clay has provided her an expressive outlet that affords a similar personal satisfaction. “Both require considerable discipline and daily commitment to develop and improve your technique, and they also evoke similar feelings. Being in front of an orchestra, completely immersed in the music, is an incredible sensation. At that moment, everything else in the world fades away. I experience that same feeling when working at the wheel. It’s just you and the clay, and time stands still.”

Andrea Knowles’ Equine Residences Designs Custom-Built Properties that Dreams are Made of.
Andrea Knowles, founder of Equine Residences, has two rather insatiable, prodigious passions: horses and design. In fact, the propensity for design and décor has always been in her life from early childhood as she was never shy about offering her opinions on textiles and furnishings when it came to making decisions regarding her family’s homes. Naturally, a vocation would develop after a friend asked her for her help in remodeling
their home—the home sold fully furnished for over the asking price.
Horses have also continuously been a part of Knowles’ life. “I’ve been riding hunters and jumpers since I was very little,” says Knowles. “There’s no other feeling on Earth that compares to the connection you have with a horse when you’re riding—it’s truly soul to soul; and from the moment I received my first pony when I was 7, I felt like I was home when I was riding him—the smell, touch, and affinity was a bond and love that was enormous and it has never changed.”

“Keeping it fresh—always staying up-to-date with what’s attracting people’s attention...”A St. Moritz-inspired modern farmhouse tack room/ lounge featuring fabrics and soft furnishings custom designed in partnership with Manifattura VALOR on bespoke Equine Residences furnishings.
Observing what was happening architecturally and design-wise in the horse world. “I was surprised to find out that so many equestrian facilities felt unfinished and not very well thought out as far as the human element blending with the equine usages within the stable itself,” says Knowles.
As many horse folks believe and feel in their bones, the determination to be in the barn with a horse sometimes takes priority over everything else—it’s where horse lovers want to be. Of course, the space—the home—should match the desire and be a welcoming environment for not only the rider, but also the horses. Knowles and her team even realized that canine comfort should also be taken into consideration when thinking about redesigning a stable. It’s a holistic approach that considers everything.
Thus, Equine Residences, a full-service equine facilities design firm was born to fit a need and it has lasted for over two decades, with no end in sight. What’s the secret sauce for longevity? “Keeping it fresh—always staying up-to-date with what’s attracting peoples’ attention and finding high-end and affordable solutions for every project,” says Knowles. “Research is constant and neverending. We do all the architectural drawings and renderings in house, and
that differentiates us because we are the only design firm in the horse business offering that service and we are also seeking to bring the costs of every project significantly down by eliminating the fees of an architecture firm.”
Of course, you can’t lead a successful business for over two decades without learning an important lesson or two. Knowles has dialed in on the importance of genuinely listening to a client’s needs and delivering elevated results for their home’s interiors, exteriors, and horse stables that they would never have thought of by themselves.
The rewards for running Equine Residences are many, from learning something new to being able to implement the knowledge in design projects. “Realizing that we can take on any project in the equestrian space from architecture to project management to construction knowledge has created a one-stop shop within Equine Residences that is difficult to find anywhere else in the design and architecture world,” says Knowles.
In addition, the business operates as sustainably as possible. Knowles is constantly looking for new products that address sustainability for the long term. “I recently found reclaimed bricks in
the Netherlands that are made from recycled building materials and can be made into nearly any color and finish—plus, they’re affordable,” says Knowles.
Currently, Knowles is designing a project for clients in the Netherlands and she’s working with a German stable supply company for a large-scale project that requires bringing many experts together. “All the parties are really excited to be working in congress and we are now planning to extend that into a secondary design, build, and supply business,” says Knowles.
Barrington, long an equestrian-focused community with proximity to Chicago, is a natural market for Equine Residences. “We love bringing our knowledge of interior and equestrian design to equestrian communities,” says Knowles. “Being near such a marvelous big city makes sourcing for projects easily accessible, and we love working toward designing and building equine residences.”
As many horse lovers can attest, riding is something that grabs hold of you and demands your full responsiveness and presence. And, in a world that is constantly demanding our attention, beckoning us to refresh our social feeds and check our emails on the regular, spending quality time with horses can help us stay in our own thoughts, where not even a knock on the door could break our reverie. Creating a meaningful and useful space with the help of Equine Residences, where you can spend time with your horses to your heart’s content, will surely be a reward that offers a return in spades.
“My favorite place to ride is anywhere with great footing and happy horses,” says Knowles.

At 6 years old, Barrington’s own Sela Eden Anderson proclaimed she wanted to be a working model and she did just that. In a few short years, Anderson was everywhere— gracing multiple catalog covers, starring in in-store signage, and acting in commercials across social media for Abercrombie Kids, American Girl, Claire’s, Matilda Jane, and Kohl’s to name a few. As an in-demand child model, Anderson has traveled to New York for major clients, including Target and The Children’s Place. When she’s not modeling, Anderson is a Chinese Immersion student at Barrington Middle School Station campus and a company dancer at Barrington Dance Ensemble. Here she showcases the latest looks to start off the school year.
Ready for upcoming parties.
One of my dear friends, Becky, who grew up in Thailand introduced me to Thai cuisine. As she cooked me my first Thai meal, she explained that there is no actual Thai word for “salad,” but tossing fresh vegetables, proteins, and noodles together with a dressing is the commonplace equivalent, called “yam.” (I quickly learned to say, “Yum!” to yam.) This dish—glass noodles with shrimp, cilantro, Thai chilies, a bit of ground pork, fresh matchstick vegetables, and sugared chili-lime-garlic-fish sauce dressing— is a classic known as Yam Woon Sen.
It is very customizable; you can leave out the shrimp and pork if you like, or add in some fried tofu and more veggies, and eat it warm or cool. For the dressing, I like to add tamarind for extra pucker, and you can add a bit more sugar and less fish sauce if you prefer but be sure not to skip any of the basic ingredients. The spicy sweet/sour/ salty flavor profile of the dressing is what makes this recipe sing.
Yam is a great use for the garden vegetables you’ve been nurturing all summer or those you find at the farmers market.
• 2, 1.8 to 2-ounce bundles mung bean starch noodles (glass noodles)
• 8 to 10 large f resh shrimp, heads, tails, and shells removed, cleaned well
• 1/2 pound ground pork
• 1 Thai red chili, minced (optional)
• 1/2 cup red bell pepper, core, stem, and seeds discarded, finely diced
• 2 green onions, (roots discarded) cut into 1-inch lengths and slivered
• 1 cup loosely packed cilantro leaves (save the stems for the dressing)
• 1/2 cup cucumber, peeled, cut into 2-inch matchsticks
• 1/2 cup carrot, peeled, cut into 2-inch matchsticks
• 1/4 cup cilantro stems, snipped fine
• 1 small Thai red chili, minced (NOTE: depending on your heat tolerance, you can add an extra chili)
• 1 clove garlic, minced to make 1 tablespoon
• 1 1/2 tablespoon palm sugar
• 1/2 teaspoon salt
• Fresh lime juice to make ¼ cup
• 2 to 3 tablespoons Thai fish sauce (Fish sauce is funky deliciousness; add at least 2 tablespoons, more if you like)
• 1 tablespoon tamarind concentrate
• 1/2 cup unsalted roasted peanut
• Finely chopped lime wedges
• Extra cilantro leaves
1. Soak 2 of the 2-ounce glass noodle bundles in a bowl of warm water.
2 Prep and measure vegetables. Peel and clean shrimp. Use a marble or stone mortar and pestle to mash the cilantro stems, minced chili, garlic, salt, and palm sugar into a paste. Stir in lime juice, fish sauce, and tamarind concentrate. Move dressing to a large bowl. Set aside.
3. In a medium-sized pot, heat 4 cups of water mixed with 1 teaspoon salt to boiling over high heat. Add shrimp. Poach shrimp for a scant minute or two until pink and cooked firm. Using a slotted spoon, scoop shrimp into the dressing in the large bowl. Leave pot of water boiling on your stove. Add the pork to the pot and poach until no longer pink. Scoop pork out of the water and add to the shrimp and dressing. Leave pot of boiling water on stove—add more water if depleted. (Don’t worry about any bits of pork still in the water.) Add the soaked glass noodles to the boiling water; boil 2 minutes until plumped and translucent. Drain noodles in a colander. Add noodles to the shrimp/pork/dressing. Add matchstick vegetables and cilantro, pulling noodles apart in order to mix better. Transfer to serving bowls. Top with chopped peanuts. Garnish with additional sprinkling of cilantro leaves. Serve hot or at room temperature with lime wedges.
From mountain tops to the Arabian coast, Oman offers surprisingly diverse landscapes coupled with warm hospitality and centuries-old history.
On the southeast coast of the Arabian Peninsula, where the Persian Gulf meets the Arabian Sea, is found the earthly paradise of Oman. In ancient times, Oman was renowned for its frankincense, fishing, and metalworking. Now, its spectacular landscapes, rich culture, and heartfelt hospitality have made the country a must for discerning travelers.
The late and much beloved Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al-Said led the modernization of the country and paved the way for the creation of Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar Resort.
The resort’s location—perched on the rocky shoulders of the Sayq Plateau and blending seamlessly into the fabled Green Mountain—gives it the distinction of being the highest five-star resort in the Middle East and amongst the highest in the world. The resort’s name is a homage to the Green Mountain, which derives its distinct green hue due to its rich content of iron and chromium. In the rainy winter months, this appearance is enhanced by the verdant shrubs that pop out of the mountain’s craggy surface.
On Turkish Airlines we flew from Chicago to Muscat via Istanbul. Disembarking from the aircraft, we immediately admired the all-white traditional dress of the Omani men who don simple white gowns (dishdashas) with their heads crowned by embroidered caps (kummahs). Our driver met us for the two-hour drive into the mountains. Once difficult to reach, the area is now accessible via a superhighway that leads directly from Oman’s capital into the heart of the mountains. Note, if you are driving on your own you will reach a checkpoint where guards will not let you pass without a four-wheel vehicle. Apparently, many unwitting tourists had to be rescued after venturing into the mountains without the proper automotive power.
Upon arrival at Anantara Al Jabal Al Akhdar, our villa host guided us through a labyrinthian lantern-lit pathway to our two-bed-
room, three-bathroom private villa. A heavy wooden door opened to reveal a foyer that led to an expansive living/dining room with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking a private pool enclosed by three ochre walls that boasted explosions of magenta bougainvillea. The large bedrooms, both en-suite, flanked either end of the open floor plan. The master bath was an area unto itself, housing a huge circular shower with a 12-foot ceiling from which hung the largest rain shower head I have ever seen. Beyond the shower was a deep soaking tub encircled by tub-to-ceiling windows that overlooked a private walled garden. For changing, carved sliding wood doors concealed his and her dressing rooms. Throughout the villa, an array of elaborate metal chandeliers, sconces, and carved cedar doors provided a visual celebration of Omani artisanship.
The next morning, we saluted the sunrise from “Diana’s Point,” an outlook named in honor of Princess Diana who visited the location before the hotel was built and fell in love with the view. After several photos of the sunrise’s vivid pink and orange hues, it was off to breakfast where the bountiful buffet offered a variety of local cuisine—spicy curries, omelets, pastries, porridges, and an assortment of salads and cheese accompanied by pressed juices, teas, and delicious coffees. A bit of something for every taste, and the perfect fuel for a day of activities.
After breakfast, my husband and daughter tackled rock climbing, aka a perilous adventure where one hangs off the side of a cliff and engages in a delicate dance between nooks and crannies appearing on the face of the steep rock. This trek is one of the highest climbing routes in the Middle East and provides intrepid travelers with a unique way to experience Green Mountain. My daughter loved the experience so much that she signed up the next day for the “extreme” version that included a jaunt across the Middle East’s highest suspension “bridge” (a tightrope really). I was so relieved when she and her guide (a former member of Omani special forces) emerged
from the side of the cliff. Smiling ear to ear, Redding exclaimed, “Mom, you do know that the best view comes after the hardest climb.” While I am sure that statement is true, I chose not to test its veracity.
On another morning, we explored three archaeological sites and traditional villages. Following in the footsteps of our skilled guide, we scaled up, up, and up the side of a mountain for a glorious view of two crumbling ancient villages. Nestled into the rocky contours of the cliff, near a source of water and built of mud and clay, these villages had housed generations of mountain inhabitants before they moved to the “greener pastures” funded by the country’s oil-driven economic boom. On the trek, our guide pointed out several fossils formed when these mountains were once the sea’s floor. This area has become a source for geo-tourism as the region’s universe of fossils is easily viewed against the dark rock.
In one village, we walked along the ancient falaj water irrigation system bringing fresh spring water to cliff-hanging terrace farms. Treading carefully along the semi-treacherous path, we passed fig and pomegranate trees, bushels of jasmine and lavender, and blankets of pink roses. This olfactory extravaganza was enhanced by the canyon views of lush fruit orchards cascading down terraced slopes and descending into the deep valleys. The path meandered through villages and valleys ending at an ancient staircase so steep it seemed to lead to the heavens. We chose not to ascend but watched in awe as an elderly farmer toting a bushel of leafy greens swiftly scaled the steps.
Our April visit coincided with the bloom of the rare Damask rose. This rose blooms just a few months of the year and is used to create the region’s world-famous rose water. We were lucky to visit the home of a rose water proprietor who invited us in for dates and
tea. He shared the traditional technique of distilling rosewater using a mud oven called “Al-duhjan,” a vessel called “Al-burmah,” and a copper bowl to capture the treasured liquid. This ancient technique is still being used by farmers today.
After we returned to the resort, I headed to the Anantara spa. As the spa menu is wide and varied, my decision might have been difficult but our day’s adventures influenced my choice of the 90minute “Rose Rescue Ritual.” In a tranquil setting befitting Anantara’s elevated standard of spas, I felt renewed after experiencing the soothing, balancing, and hydrating qualities of the rose petals and luxuriant oil. It was a relaxing lesson in this country’s centuries-long love affair with the fragrant flora.
We began most of our evenings by watching the spectacular sunset wash the canyon in pigment. Nature’s extraordinary show was followed by a feast at Al Maisan or Bella Vista. Perched high above the canyon, Al Maisan specializes in Southeast Asian, Indian, and Arab specialties. This eatery serves delicious global cuisine with ingredients that are freshly harvested from the Arabian Sea and local farms. We chose Bella Vista when we craved traditional Italian fare with a contemporary flair. At either venue, we savored delicious
dishes while transfixed by the incredible views.
As our trip continued, we descended from the mountain’s heights and journeyed to the southern coastal city of Salalah. The city is set in an environment of white beaches, coconut palms, gardens of lush vegetation, and camels, camels, and more camels. During our April visit, the landscape appeared a bit “desert-like.” However, our guide explained that during the monsoon season (June to August) waterfalls appear on mountainsides, the terrain is carpeted in emerald green, and large lakes emerge in meadows attracting a variety of brightly colored migratory birds. We all agreed that we would return one day to see this terrestrial transformation.
Anantara’s Al Baleed Resort Salalah is a quick drive from the airport and is nestled between an expansive white sand beach and a freshwater lagoon. In true Anantara fashion, the accommodations were stunning. A private gate opened to the crown jewel of our two-bedroom villa—a courtyard with a pool, two “day beds,” our own private beach, lounge chairs, and a seating area—all with views of the lagoon and Al Baleed Archeological Park. My husband celebrated a birthday on this trip, and one day we arrived to find that the villa had been festively decorated in his honor—just one example of Anantara’s attention to detail.
The resort boasts an endless array of daily physical activities— think beach yoga, Thai boxing, tennis, and intense workouts with a trainer. Experiences ranging from mobile camping in the Empty Quarter to an encounter with the Omani dolphin to traditional cooking lessons with the resort’s chef will satisfy those who seek an appreciation of Oman’s beauty whether it be on land, sea, or in the kitchen. Kids would love the pools, beaches, kids club, and camel rides along the pristine beach. For those who crave a calmer itinerary, lounging by the pool or visiting the spectacular spa are your tickets to paradise—I highly recommend the divine frankincense massage.
Excited to learn more about the country’s history—both natural and archaeological—we opted for a guided tour of Salalah. What an experience! In one short day, we visited soaring cliffs overlooking cerulean waters, walked the paths of long-ago trade routes (think 300 B.C.), traversed century-old ruins, and learned all about frankincense.
The Wadi Darbat (the Darbat Valley) was a tour highlight. This valley area was teeming with camels, donkeys, and cows (the latter two are darling miniature versions of their U.S. brethren), and we often ran into “camel jams.” When these long legged fellows chose to cross the road, we had no option but to enjoy the view. The camels were equally fun to view from a distance; the sight of hundreds of camels walking nose to tail against the backdrop of the colorful and rugged mountains was truly breathtaking.
While the camels were so entertaining, the Wadi Darbat’s natural landscape, with its shimmering emerald pools (the color is derived from the mountain’s mineral content and appears almost effervescent) and expansive views of the coastline, was the real star of our tour.
We ended our day at the stunning ruins at the Al Baleed Archaeological Site dating back to 850 A.D. (and built on ruins dating back to the Iron Age) and a tour of the Museum of the Land of Frankincense. I have always been fascinated by frankincense’s long role in human history from the Christian tale of the three kings’ gifts for baby Jesus to the current-day essential oil trend touting its healing powers. And here I was on Omani soil learning about this ancient trade in a port city dating back to 300 B.C. Truly a one-ofa-kind experience.
For those travelers who wish to travel well but also wish to follow paths less taken, Anantara’s dual properties are the ideal destinations. From mountain top to sandy beach, Anantara’s curated experiences immerse you in Omani culture while its resorts envelop you in breathtaking luxury. Embrace your spirit of discovery with a journey to Oman.

The relentless back pain began when Wendy Hutton was just a teenager growing up in St. Louis.
“From a very young age, I saw the powerful benefits of chiropractic care”, says the mother of three from the back deck of her family’s Barrington home. “That’s why I decided I wanted to be behind the care.”
Today, that teenager is now an accomplished chiropractic physician and wellness lounge owner who leads the skilled staff at Barrington Back & Body.
“I do find there is definitely a benefit in having some back issues myself because I can not only sympathize, but I can empathize with my patients, “ explains Dr. Hutton, who opened her first practice in Nashville, Tennessee in 2002. “I know what they’re feeling, and I know how it can affect their life and keep them from doing the things that they love to do … or the things that they need to do.”
And while Dr. Hutton and her skilled staff provide expert care for the physical needs of each of the patients who walk through the doors of their spa-like lounge, they too pay close attention to the equally important emotional aspects of healing.
“We take care of people,” says Dr. Hutton. “I want everybody to feel like they are loved and cared for from the moment they come in and to when they go out.” Certainly, the nearly constant advances in technology continue to shape all that Barrington Back & Body offers, including the Acousana SoftWave services that can help provide long-term relief from acute, chronic, and post-surgical pain. This therapy utilizes acoustic shockwaves to induce a powerful natural healing response.
“It is the best technology out there for soft tissue healing,” she says. “The technologies that we use in the office are pretty incredible because we’re using focused energy that exists in nature to provide a specific benefit to the body. Whether it’s red light and radio frequency heat to reduce fat and create youthful skin, electromagnetic energy to tighten, tone or build muscle, or acoustic energy, velocity, or infrared energy to heal. We don’t do anything invasive to someone’s body. We are delivering energy of some form into their body to help their body have a specific positive response.”
“Our services aren’t always a luxury, “ adds Dr. Hutton, whose chiropractic, massage, and infrared sauna services release tension and increase movement, while also offering the ultimate relaxation. “Sometimes your body needs a massage. Sometimes your body needs to get healthier by releasing some fat, building muscle, or decreasing inflammation. We offer self-care in many forms.”
“These things are important. We overlook ourselves a lot. Taking care of ourselves is crucial for leading a fulfilling life and being there for those who depend on us.”

Leah Matanky was a publicist in the music industry 10 years ago, with a one-hour commute each way, when she chose to shift to another line of work—selling high-end, slightly used saddles and tack.
The woman who could no longer stand sitting in a car for lengthy stretches of time sought to help riders of a different ilk secure comfortable seats for themselves and for their horses.
In 2013, Matanky launched Redwood Tack as part mail order venture, featuring the biggest and best selection of slightly used saddles and tack in America. Among Redwood Tack’s exclusive brands are Butet, Voltaire, CWD, Antares, Devoucoux, Hermès, Amerigo, Meyer, Prestige, and Bruno Delgrange. Redwood Tack’s inventory includes saddle covers, stirrup leathers and irons, saddle pads, bridles, bits and more. Saddles purchased through Redwood Tack come with a five-day trial policy and have a flat $50 (fully insured) shipping fee. At least 20 of her satisfied customers live in the Barrington area.
“I’d returned to riding when I figured it was time for a life shift,” Matanky says. “I work in a niche market. I’m a one-woman business, filling a need for people who want high-quality saddles without the high price and without the long waiting periods—three to four months—of custom-made saddles.” And as riders know, lightly broken in saddles are to most people even better than having to break in a new saddle.
“I started small, looking for tack items at local shops. I own everything I sell; no consignments. The first Redwood Tack saddle I sold was one I’d bought on eBay. Our saddles range in price from $1,000 to $6,000. It’s been an education for me, as I’ve learned from making a profit and sometimes from not making one.”
Matanky started riding horses at the age of 6 in Boulder, Colorado, where her parents, Michael and Pat, still reside. It was love at first trot. The name of the first pony she rode was Tic Tac. Next was Dinah.
“Dinah was a black, adorable pony, a perfect pony,” says Matanky, who lives with her partner, Oscar, and 10-yearold son, Robin. “I’d always loved horses. I remember feeding a couple of horses that would come right up to our backyard fence in Colorado. My parents were great, letting me take horseback riding lessons at a young age.
“I still ride horses today,” adds Matanky. “I have a couple of horses I show. By showing horses, I feel I can stay on top of the trends and know what people are looking for when it comes to saddles and tack.”
“We have bought several saddles from Redwood,” says Jenny Welsh, whose 19-year-old daughter, Olivia, rides at Deerwood Farm in Barrington Hills and is a member of the College of Charleston equestrian team in South Carolina. “The online process is easy and so is the trial process, which allows riders the opportunity to decide if the saddle meets their needs. Shipping is quick and easy.”
“All the saddles,” she adds, “have been in great condition and as described on the site.”
Matanky notes she is one of only a handful of entrepreneurs selling slightly used saddles and tack items as a full-time career in the United States. It’s a small group—and a collaborative one.
“We all tend to work together and help one another out,” says Matanky, whose expanded inventory—300-plus saddles—now requires the space of a spacious showroom instead of the bedroom she used to house items during Redwood Tack’s first year. “I won’t hesitate to inform a client of another seller that might have an item that I don’t have. Other sellers have recommended horse riders visit my site.”
But the bottom line takes a back seat to something bigger and more meaningful for the owner of Redwood Tack.
“Redwood Tack is my way of sharing my love of the sport and the beautiful equipment that goes with it,” Matanky says.
