Thank you to our patients and community for showing your support by attending our 30th anniversary celebration. Our event was nostalgic as we reflected on our past and fostered a vision of our future. From humble beginnings to our three doctor practice, Lake Forest Smiles continues providing exceptional dental care to Lake Forest, Lake Bluff and nearby communities. Our success would not be possible without
you! It is our honor to extend our sincere appreciation to our dental family and our community.

We are proud to announce Dr. Kate Steingreaber as our new associate dentist.
Many of you have already had a chance to say hello. Dr. Kate grew up in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She received her bachelor of Science in Human Physiology from The University of Iowa and received her Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree from The University of Iowa College of Dentistry. After graduating from dental school, Dr. Kate furthered her education at Baylor College of Dentistry in Dallas, where she received her Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) certificate. Her additional year of advanced training was focused on dental implants, esthetics, dental photography, and treating medically compromised patients. A highlight of her time at Baylor was the Post-Doctoral Implant Surgical Placement Program. She is passionate about doing what is best for her patients to help them achieve their most beautiful and healthy smiles. Dr. Kate is excited to be a part of the Lake Forest Smiles team, and looks forward to being active in the community and meeting you!

All of our treatments are minimally invasive,” Dr. Woloson says. “Every procedure is performed in an office setting. She was one of the first vascular surgeons to perform minimally invasive vein ablations and has one of the largest vein practices in the Midwest— having completed more than 10,000 laser ablations.

Editor’s Note
S
timing couldn’t be better. My youngest son, Michael had graduated from Evanston Township High School and was heading to Southern California for college. My daughter Lauren is also there starting her new career, while Richard, my oldest, is beginning graduate school in Chicago. Although my metaphoric nest is empty (and let me tell you, I’ve shed a lot of tears these past few weeks), I’m so energized and excited to learn about and become a part of the fabulous Lake Forest and Lake Bluff community. This issue celebrates two Power Women, Honorable Susan Garrett and our cover story with Dr. Victoria Medvec the author of her newly-published Negotiate Without Fear. We also highlight the upcoming annual Then & Now Auto Show, cochaired by the tireless John Maxson, Ed Russ, and Shaun Carter. October is one of the most beautiful months in our area with changing leaves, cooler temperatures, and of course, the increasing anticipation of numerous holidays. If you’re like me, you’re looking forward to enjoying warm, comfort foods with your friends and family, such as the incredibly delicious Butternut Squash Ravioli we’ve included in The Dish. I welcome the opportunity to meet as many of you as possible in the coming months. This publication is committed to showcasing the uniqueness and excellence of your community and thus it is YOUR magazine. I have big shoes to fill, following my predecessor, Wendy Franzen, but I welcome the challenge! If you have ideas to share, please reach out to me. I want to hear from you.
The Honorable Susan Garrett
IX WEEKS AGO, I received a call from JWC Media’s Publisher, John Conatser. Throughout the 12+ years that I’ve worked as a freelance stylist for JWC Media, John has hired me for an array of projects including numerous fashion editorials, features of the Chicago area’s most influential residents and rising stars, and even a location shoot in NYC’s Central Park with Phil Donohue! I’ve appreciated and adored working with John and JWC Media over the years. I assumed his early-morning phone call would be an invitation for another exciting shoot. Instead, John said, “Theresa, I want you to be our next Editor in Chief of Forest & Bluff magazine.” I didn’t respond right away; did I hear him correctly? Was I capable of this? Once the shock and surprise faded the answer, of course, was a Theresa DeMaria Editor in Chief resounding yes! I’ve been a freelance fashion stylist around the globe for more than 20 years, but I always imagined theresa@jwcmedia.com that I would have an opportunity to run a magazine. John’s invitation felt like a dream come true, and the @forestandbluffmag

HOPE FOR THE HOLIDAYS Co-chairs Ester Viti and Keri Cook Falls toast Allendale Shelter Club’s fall fundraiser “Hope for the Holidays”. words by Whitley Bouma Herbert edited by Erika Carey photography by Widia Viti
A
LATE FALL AFTERNOON wine stroll and shopping party in Lake Forest is the perfect way to enjoy fall’s crisp temperatures, tackle some early holiday entertaining and gift shopping, and give to a great local cause, the Allendale Shelter Club. “For decades, Allendale Shelter Club hosted a boutique in November and more recently we’ve been hosting wine events,” explains Hope for the Holidays 2021 co-chair Keri Cook Falls. “This year, we decided to combine the two, creating an event where our guests can do some early holiday gift shopping and wine buying at the same time.” The Allendale Association is a private, nonprofit organization dedicated to excellence and innovation in the care, treatment, education, and advocacy for families, children and youth with serious emotional, mental and behavioral health challenges. Based in Lake Villa, Allendale has provided excellence and innovation in specialized education, child welfare and mental health services for over 120 years to families and children. Allendale is more than a safe haven from a life of crisis, trauma, and neglect. It empowers each child it serves to transcend their circumstances with positive support and consistent, ongoing guidance. Allendale provides children the transformative experience of simply being kids—the chance to make friends, to play, to explore, to have an adventure, to make their own happy childhood memories. “We believe everyone deserves a healthy childhood, a caring family and a chance to learn, grow and change course,” explains Allendale Association President and CEO Jason Keeler. “Allendale is a place where kids have the opportunity to restore their life and discover a better future.” The Allendale Shelter Club is one of the primary fundraising bodies for the Allendale Association. Founded in 1906 by 16 women, the Shelter Club has grown to more than 60 women, contributing more than $13 million over the years. In addi-
tion to providing much-needed funding through events including Hope for the Holidays, the Allendale Shelter Club takes pride in offering “mother’s touches” to the lives of the kids in Allendale’s care with individualized birthday gifts, a Christmas holiday party with gifts, graduation celebrations, career counseling and a “School’s Out!” Spring Carnival at the Lake Villa campus. “Allendale believes in every kid until they can believe in themselves,” explains Hope for the Holidays co-chair Ester Viti. Join Allendale on Saturday, November 6, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., in and around Market Square in Lake Forest. Shop for a cause while tasting fabulous wines and enjoying live music by Doug Falls and Louie Zagoras. Don’t forget to enter the Hope for the Holidays raffle for a chance to win a coveted magnum of Dom Pérignon Rosé Vintage 2006. Wine tastings in participating stores, such as Kenzy, Lillie Alexander, Valentina, M on the Square, Smiths Men’s Store and Lake Forest Book Store, will be curated by Chip Harkleroad of Courtyard Wines and staffed by winery experts. All wines can be purchased on the spot from Courtyard Wines via QR codes at each tasting table with 10 percent of sales benefiting Allendale Association. Additionally, all participating shops will donate 10 percent of the evening’s sales to Allendale. The Allendale Shelter Club Hope for the Holidays shopping event is free to all. BARN PARTY
THE BUZZ
Equestrian Connection in Lake Forest continues to honor the legacy of Marty Domitrovich with its annual Marty’s Barn Party fundraiser on October 16. words by Mitch Hurst
E
QUESTRIAN Connection in Lake Forest will celebrate its 20th year of operation with its annual Marty’s Barn Party in October. The organization provides animal therapy for children and adults with mental and physical health chal-
she says. Equestrian Connection’s origins can be found at an equestrian facility in Lake Geneva where Schnell took her twin boys for therapy in the late ‘90s. She was inspired by their improvement, and the rest is history. “I took them up there every day and after a month they were like, ‘Well, this is cool,’ and suddenly you’re taking them from a wheelchair and giving them movement that they can’t get anywhere else,” Schnell says. “You’ll find people who have MS or who walk with a cane, or a walker and they’ll tell you this is the only time they get this kind of pelvic and hip movement.” After partnering with the Lake Geneva facility for five years, Schnell relocated Equestrian Connection to its current location on North Bradley Road in Lake Forest in 2006. “We purchased the property in 2006 and just after that awareness of autism really took off. It was one in 600 children when we founded the company and now it’s one in 68 or something close to that,” she says. “The smells of the barn are very complicated and often can be the tipping point for a child who’s been through therapy of every kind in an office.” “It isn’t magic, but it can be in the sense that people in particular mental health situations, who have been in clinicals over and over and over, just haven’t progressed the way they wanted,” she adds. “This is a new approach, a kind of tipping point to helping them.” Marty’s Barn Party is Equestrian Connection’s largest fundraiser each year, providing about a third of its operating budget as well as scholarships for needy families to cover the cost of programs. Individual tickets are $175 and there are a variety of sponsorship opportunities. The organization is also accepting donations for a silent auction. Entertainment for the October 16 event will be provided by Chicago Blues Now. “There isn’t a day that goes by that we don’t think of Marty and appreciate all he did for this program. His wife, Karen, continues to support our mission and serves on our board of directors,” Schnell says. “His entire family has been there for us every step of the way.”
lenges. The event is named for Marty Domitrovich, a major supporter of Equestrian Connection in its early years up until his passing from cancer in 2007. The event helps to raise muchneeded funding for scholarships and cost of operations. “Once we completed construction of our current arena and hay area of the barn in 2006, Marty wanted to host a party to benefit the program,” says Diana Schnell, Equestrian Connection’s founder. “It was important to him to highlight Equestrian Connection to our community and to give back to those who helped him with his fight, the oncology nurses at Northwestern Medicine.” Since its founding in 2001, Equestrian Connection has helped thousands of special needs children and adults, from ages 2 to 105 years, improve their quality of life. Among the organization’s diverse programs is hippotherapy, an equine therapy that uses manipulated horse movements to improve function; therapeutic riding, during which clients learn riding skills that contribute to their physical and emotional well-being; and, psychotherapy, in which clients’ engagement with a horse can address issues such as anxiety and depression. It also runs a special program for combat veterans to help them connect with each other and their families, “Our real mission is to provide this unique therapy because we know it works and because it doesn’t just help one type of disability. It crosses many lines like mental health, physical disabilities, and cerebral palsy paralysis,” Schnell says. “When we originally started, we focused mainly on children because that’s the need I knew wasn’t being met, particularly for families that didn’t have the financial means to get therapy.” Schnell says disabled children often got lost in the public school system because school systems weren’t equipped to provide the services they needed. “I realized that, as a parent of disabled twins, how hard it For tickets to Marty’s Barn Party and for more information about was for me as a professional working in the business world the event and Equestrian Connection, visit let alone someone who didn’t have the resources to get help,” equestrianconnection.org.

IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD
SERVICE ABOVE SELF words by Erika Carey
I
T IS JUST ANOTHER typical Wednesday morning in Lake Forest, and the sun has barely risen over the shores of Lake Michigan when cars begin filling the lot at the Lake Forest Club for the weekly breakfast gathering of action-oriented neighbors, friends, community leaders, and business professionals. But when the breakfast is over, the amicable chatter stops with the ring of a bell and the real business of “Service Above Self ” begins for members of the Lake Forest–Lake Bluff Rotary Club. Established in 1959, the Lake Forest-Lake Bluff Rotary Club is one of more than 35,000 clubs affiliated with Rotary International (RI), a global network of 1.2 million members who are actively changing lives locally and internationally with the mission of providing service to others, promoting integrity and advancing world understanding, good will, and peace each through fellowship and action to create lasting change—across the globe, in their communities, and within themselves. RI was founded 116 years ago when lawyer Paul
Harris and three friends met in a small office in downtown Chicago. Their intent was to bring together professionals with diverse backgrounds who could exchange ideas and form meaningful, lifelong friendships. They named their new club “Rotary” to describe the practice of meeting in rotation at the members various places of business. The concept drew great attention and spread rapidly. Within six years, Rotary Clubs existed on six continents and its reach vision gradually extended to humanitarian service. Rotary International is headquartered in Evanston and supports local clubs in working together to promote world peace, fight disease, provide clean water, sanitation and hygiene, protect mothers and children, support education, and grow local economies. RI and its affiliates have been on the forefront of leading efforts such as the eradication of Polio world-wide, responding to global disasters and attacking Malaria in third-world countries. What does that mean for the 50 plus members of the Lake Forest-Lake Bluff Rotary Club? Newly elected Club President John Barth, who has lived and operated his business in Lake Forest for over 20 years, explains, “Our Club provides members the opportunity to network all over the world and to do good within our own community as well as with in neighboring communities.” Barth notes that through the years, the LFLB Club has supported organizations including Northern Illinois Food, Gorton Community Bank, CROYA, LEAD, Nuestro Center in Highwood, Gorton Community Center, Lake County Habitat for Humanity, Boys & Girls Club of Lake County, and countless others. The Club is currently running its annual coat drive which has provided thousands of warm winter coats for youth in Waukegan and

North Chicago through the years. Club members are also engaged in offering local literacy and reading programs and opportunities. Additionally, the local club has been a force on the international scene as well. “Club members have traveled as volunteers to the Maranatha School in Uganda and delivered polio vaccines in India. And the club sent earthquake relief to Haiti, supported Japan Disaster relief efforts, and assisted in providing wells for safe drinking water in Kenya and Tanzania,” said Barth. Fred Jackson of Lake Forest has been a member of the Club for over 50 years. The long-serving retired Executive Director of Lake Forest Parks and Recreation, said, “I originally joined the Club to better connect myself with leaders in the community. What I discovered is what distinguishes Rotary from other service clubs is the international piece. I have experienced many opportunities to make our world a better place while enjoying the fellowship of my fellow residents. I am a better person today because of Rotary.” Since its founding, the Club and its public charitable arm, the Lake Forest-Lake Bluff Rotary Club Foundation, have donated more than $1 million to causes in our community. The funds are secured by members and through fundraising projects, including the very popular annual Economic Breakfast which brings experts in the industry together to provide economic insights on the year ahead. When the pandemic hit, Club members continued to meet weekly via Zoom where they participated in regular fellowship and business activities involving local, national, and international speakers. According to Barth, “Our foundation supported several local organizations delivering food and services in the area. We delivered books and introduced a new literacy initiative to help young children prepare for school, whether in person or remote.” A missing component was RI’s highly regarded high school exchange student program, which the Club hopes to resurrect when the pandemic is over. In the past, Rotary Club members who travel are welcome to attend local weekly meetings throughout the world where
“I look forward to the breakfast every Wednesday where I meet with a group of very generous, joyful and loving, people.”
they are met by their host and other local Rotarian members. Typically, small local Club flag or banner are presented for the guest to take bake to their home Club. “This a great benefit to being a Rotarian,” said Barth. “You are welcome wherever your travels take you.” Zhuming Smith, owner of Apex Signs & Graphics, Inc. in Lake Bluff, joined the Club in 2017 and has been nominated to serve as Club president beginning in 2023. Her favorite activity is the annual Memorial Day placement of flags on veteran graves because her late husband served in Vietnam and her late father-in-law fought in Iwo Jima during WWII. “Being a Rotarian means to be of service to others. There are so many challenges in the world, if we can all do something good, the world is a better place,” she said. A retired chemical engineer who lives in Lake Bluff, Sunny Lu recently founded his own business distributing high-tech consumables for research and industrial labs. He joined the Club one year ago. He especially enjoys the “Happy Dollars” portion of the meeting when Club members have the chance to throw a few dollars into a basket in exchange for the chance to share a happy story about their lives. There are many happy stories every week,” said Lu. “I look forward to the breakfast every Wednesday where I meet with a group of very generous, joyful and loving, people.” The Lake Forest-lake Bluff Rotary Club meets weekly on Wednesday mornings at 7:15 am at the Lake Forest Club. Discover how Rotary can be a part of your life by joining us for a breakfast. I
’VE BEEN Swedish Death Cleaning. With the same intensity I once “nested” during pregnancy, I now find myself operating in reverse. I have a deep desire to get rid of just about everything I own and bleach whatever’s left. Swedish Death Cleaning’s guiding principle is declutter your possessions now so after you kick the bucket, your kids will not stand in line at the UPS store and complain to complete strangers about what a hoarder you were and how they almost fainted when they emptied your sock drawer only to discover a rusty Sucrets tin full of baby teeth. Back in the ’70s, before it was a movement, my grandmother Swedish Death Cleaned. She quietly slogged her way through the house getting rid of all the stuff no one would want or need. She didn’t talk about it (like I am). She wasn’t dramatic (like I am). She just did it. Legend has it, only a single garbage bag was taken to the curb after her death. Her possessions were either clearly labeled for an intended recipient or easily donated. She is my muse. I want to be the cool ancestor who becomes family folklore simply because I didn’t keep bags full of bags, boxes full of boxes, or human teeth. My goal is to Swedish Death Clean until I can live in a yurt. Swedish Death Cleaning is not for the faint of heart, especially if you are a sentimental maximalist like me. I almost broke down when I donated my sons’ dirty clothes hamper. Seeing that hamper in my rearview mirror, alone on the sidewalk of Goodwill, had me silent sobbing and hiccuping all the way home. That hamper bore witness to my family’s ordinary, and occasionally extraordinary, life. She witnessed my best days. She witnessed my worst. If that hamper could talk; God only knows what she may have seen my kids do. I don’t even want to know.
We are so busy accumulating stuff and looking to the future, we often overlook the wonder of the ordinary. More often than not, the things that take our breath away are exceedingly ordinary—our children’s laughter, a scent that triggers a memory, a sunrise, an old dog’s devotion. When my kids were small, I dreamt I was strangled by little, white toddler socks. I woke panicked, gasping for air. At the time, I was exhausted from washing, drying, and pairing these tiny socks. I was exhausted from picking up little white socks from the floor, from beds, from the yard, from car seats, from toy bins, from bookshelves. I was lamenting these little white socks when I caught myself. I focused my thoughts on each tiny little foot that fit into each tiny little sock. I envisioned the pudgy fingers that peeled off socks and dropped them. The holy mundane is the yarn that becomes the warp and weft of our colorful life tapestries. To honor the holy mundane, we must train our eyes to appreciate the beauty of our life’s negative space. Like an artist creates forms in the space around a subject, we can let our mundane routines reveal meaning in our lives. If we were to truly embrace the holy mundane, we’d never take for granted our family’s toothbrushes hanging in the bathroom. Slamming screen doors would become music. We’d pay homage to our favorite burner on the stove (front, right obviously). We’d see the simple beauty around us. Each day would become sacred. The Crisp Apple Serves one • • • • • • • • • •
2 tablespoons turbinado sugar 1 wedge of fresh lemon 1 1/2 ounces vodka 1/2-ounce ginger liqueur 1/2-ounce Autumn Spiced Simple Syrup (recipe follows) 1/2-ounce freshly squeezed lemon juice 2 ounces best quality apple cider 1 dash walnut bitters 1 crisp red apple, sliced into thin wedges, for garnish Cinnamon stick, for garnish
1. Rim glass: Place turbinado sugar in a saucer, adding enough to rim glass. Hold lemon wedge right-side up in one hand and a rocks glass upside-down in the other hand, running the lemon flesh along the rim. Keep glass upside-down (to prevent juice from dripping down sides of glass), dip glass in sugar, and twist to coat. Gently tap off excess. Place glass right-side up until rim is dry. 2. Add vodka, ginger liqueur, simple syrup, lemon juice, cider, and bitters to a shaker with ice. Shake until well chilled, then strain over fresh ice into the sugar-rimmed rocks glass. 3. Striking and Dramatic
U
NABASHEDLY VIVID BLOOMS—purple clematis floating above the heads of lush hydrangeas, orange ranunculus, dahlias in sunset hues—beautifully collide with cabbages and kale in this autumnal display. Clusters of green American pokeweed berries on bright fuchsia stems tumble from the tortoise glass vase while the serrated, fern-like leaves and tangerine-orange berries of European mountain ash give textural contrast to an unforgettable late season arrangement. Bespoke arrangement and tortoise glass vase available through M on the Square, 259 Market Square, Lake Forest, 847-604-4225.

VERYONE HAS A favorite Italian pasta dish, and this autumnal treat is mine. Tender ravioli pillows filled with butternut squash, onion, and savory parmesan, are finished with browned butter and sage. In northern Italy, friends there tell me this dish is served throughout fall and winter, even starring as the first course in Christmas Eve feasts. For the very best homemade pasta results, I’ve used semolina flour, made from first quality durum wheat. The high gluten content of the semolina is what helps the pasta hold shape and texture. But it also requires strong hands to work the dough. I believe the effort is worth it. So, pour yourself a glass of wine, roll up your sleeves, and give it a go! FOR THE FILLING • 1 shallot, peeled, cored and finely diced to make 1/2 cup • 1 Tbsp olive oil • 1/2 cup water • 1 butternut squash, peeled, seeds discarded, cubed to make 4 cups • 1 cup grated Parmesan Reggiano cheese (plus a little extra to top finished servings) • 1/2 cup egg whites (reserved from the pasta recipe) • 1 tsp salt • 1/2 tsp freshly ground pepper • 1/2 tsp freshly ground nutmeg
FOR THE PASTA • Hand-cranked pasta-sheet roller machine (Many models available on Amazon) • 1 Tbsp saffron threads + 4/3 cup water, simmered/reduced down to 1/4 cup liquid • 1/4 cup water • 3 1/4 cups semolina flour (I used Bob’s Red Mill No. 1 durum wheat version) • 1 dozen large egg yolks (Reserve 1/2 cup of the whites for the ravioli filling and 1/2 cup to use as egg wash) • 1 Tbsp olive oil • 3 to 4 Tbsp cream (as needed) FOR THE BROWNED BUTTER SAGE SAUCE • 15 fresh sage leaves, small leaves whole, large leaves chopped • 1 stick butter MAKE BUTTERNUT SQUASH FILLING In a sauté pan over low heat, cook diced shallot in oil for five minutes until very soft. Add
THE DISH water and butternut squash cubes. Cover pan and simmer for 15 minutes or until squash is tender. Remove cover and continue simmering a scant few minutes until the liquid has cooked off. (Do not brown the squash.) Place squash/onion mixture in a bowl and blend with hand-held blender until smooth. (Or blend in food processor.) Line a fine mesh sieve with cheesecloth and place over a bowl. Scoop pureed squash into cheesecloth-lined sieve and allow to strain while you make pasta dough. Once pasta dough is made, finish the filling by stirring in the parmesan cheese, ½ cup egg whites, nutmeg, salt and pepper. SERVANT EXTRAORDINAIRE The Honorable Susan Garrett—the History Center of Lake Forest-Lake Bluff ’s 2021 Local Legend—answered the out-of-the-blue call to the political arena in the late 1990s and served passionately for her constituents as an Illinois Representative and Senator from 1999-2013. words by Bill McLean photography by Monica Kass Rogers
T
WO PHONE CALLS, separated by about 24 years, stunned Susan Garrett. Maybe she said, “Who? Me?” each time. Perhaps she thought, “Really? Why me?” each time. Garrett was all set to eat dinner with her family in Lake Forest when she fielded the first call. On the other end was a voice representing the Democratic Party of Illinois, in late 1997. The voice let Garrett know that the Party wanted her to consider running for state office (59th district, Illinois House of Representatives) in the 1998 election. “I had no political experience and had not been connected to any political party,” Garrett, active in the League of Women Voters-Lake Forest/Lake Bluff area at the time, recalls. “I knew nothing about partisan politics.” But Garrett, after a thorough rumination, chose to run anyway, won by approximately 1,500 votes—in a district that was 70 percent Republican/30 percent Democrat—and then, the following two four-year terms in the House, she served in the Illinois Senate (29th district) from 2003-2013, a total of 14 years. Garrett answered the second phone call earlier this year. This time she heard a voice representing the History Center of Lake Forest-Lake Bluff. The voice on the other end let Garrett know that she’d been selected as the History Center’s 2021 Local Legend. Honorees in the previous 11 years included local lumi-
naries Captain Jim Lovell, musician Richard Marx, architect Adrian Smith, newsman Bill Kurtis, and Cubs great Ryne Sandberg. Each was recognized as someone who had contributed significantly to the community and the world. “Shocked. I was shocked when I heard the news,” Garrett says humbly. The 12th Local Legend will be celebrated at the History Center (500 East Deerpath Road, Lake Forest), or via Zoom, on October 7, beginning at 5 p.m. Garrett was interviewed by NBC 5 political editor, award-winning journalist and good friend Carol Marin in August; footage of that animated, compelling interaction—which drew little-known stories, behind-the-scenes anecdotes, and insights missing from standard biographies—will highlight the event. “Susan is a powerhouse, a force of nature, an amazing mentor to women, and a multifaceted human being,” says History Center of Lake Forest-Lake Bluff Executive Director Carol Summerfield. “When we grant this honor, we want the person who had, and continues to have, an impact in a variety of areas. That’s Susan. Our Local Legends are very important people. “Susan,” she adds, “belongs in that category.” In 1998, the Illinois House district wasn’t your typical constituency. Far from it. It contained Lake Bluff, Lake Forest, Mettawa, Green Oaks, North Chicago, and Waukegan, among other cities and villages. “It’s the most culturally and economically diverse district FO REST & BLUFF 61

“Susan is still very much a part of our community ... she’s been involved in service her whole life. She made a difference; she continues to make a difference.” in the state,” says Garrett, a resident of Lake Forest for nearly 40 years. “Needs are so different. It was a huge challenge. My goal, from the start, was to bridge the gap. I wanted to make sure that all residents—from the wealthiest to the poorest— had the same opportunities, had access to the same state services. Or, at the least, to make sure that all were aware of the opportunities and services. “And I wanted them to trust me.” Garrett attended Deerfield High School and Lake Forest College in the 1960s. While majoring in political science at LFC, she “got caught up in the Women’s Movement.” She admits her generation’s trust in government during the turbulent decade was fragile. “As a legislator I wanted to be accessible, bring government back home, and deliver for those in my district,” says Garrett, who, in her 14 years in Springfield, championed issues related to the environment, health care, education, planned communities, economic development, and government ethics. Especially government ethics. Garrett was the chief sponsor of a major bill in 2003—the State Officials and Employees Ethics Act. The Governor’s Office summarized it “as the toughest, most comprehensive ethics reform package in the state’s history.” “People, no matter where they’re from, want to be acknowledged and respected,” continues Garrett, who shares two grown children, Brett and Lizzie, with husband Scott and answers to “Gigi” around five grandchildren. “I was there for people. I was open and honest with everyone. I was a ‘tell it like it is’ lawmaker.” Some five years after waking up one day and deciding it was time for someone else to occupy her seat in Springfield, Garrett and former Republican Illinois Senator John Millner—also a former chief of police in Elmhurst—founded the Center for Illinois Politics (centerforilpolitics.org) in 2018. Garrett and Millner are moderates. The Center’s bipartisan group of politicians and civic-minded folks seeks to engage Illinoisans in state and local politics through data-driven, factual, non-partisan reports and articles. Garrett typically spends at least two hours a day on Cen-
ter for Illinois Politics work as one of its 14 board members. The Center reviews all pieces for neutrality prior to publication. A recent posting addressed breakthrough COVID infections and asked, “Are we more at risk than we thought?” “People want to know more about COVID, on many different levels,” says Garrett, who received an honorary doctorate of laws from Lake Forest College in 2012. “People are still concerned about the economy, in general. Illinoisans’ primary focus is on health—of people and of the state. “I’ve been encouraged, recently, by the fresh approach to how decisions are made in Springfield,” she adds. “They’re no longer being made by a few. Our state government enjoyed success last year and continues to do so this year, some of it overlooked.” Fun-loving and whip-smart, the former state majority whip contributes her extensive leadership skills for other organizations, including the Erie Family Health Foundation and the Illinois Women’s Institute for Leadership Training Academy. Mother. Grandmother. Wife. Ex-lawmaker. Honorary degree holder. Mentor. Serial board member. And, now, Local Legend. Susan Garrett still can’t believe that last title. But Anne Hunting can. “Susan is still very much a part of our community,” says Hunting, a History Center board member. “She’s been involved in service her whole life. She made a difference; she continues to make a difference.” Friend. Susan Garrett is that, too. To many. “We talk family a lot,” Hunting adds. “We both like to garden. We both enjoy having relaxing dinners together with our husbands. “It’s so easy to be with her, to talk with her, to walk alongside her.” Visit lflbhistory.org/give-join/local-legends-benefit for ticket information about the 2021 Local Legends benefit, as well as sponsorship opportunities to help honor The Honorable Susan Garrett and support the History Center’s annual fundraiser. WHAT WOULD VICKI DO? Lake Forest’s Dr. Victoria H. Medvec outlines her key strategies and tools for successful outcomes in her new best-selling book Negotiate Without Fear . words by Ann Marie Scheidler photography by Monica Kass Rogers styling by Theresa DeMaria
T
HERE ARE CERTAIN people in this world who see “no” as a final answer. And then there are those who see the word “no” as an opening for a deeper discussion. Lake Forest’s Dr. Victoria (Vicki) Medvec, author of the newly published book Negotiate Without Fear: Strategies and Tools to Maximize Your Outcomes, finds herself in this latter camp. Dr. Medvec is the Adeline Barry Davee Professor of Management and Organizations at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University. Additionally, she is the co-founder and Executive Director of the Center for Executive Women at the Kellogg School and the CEO of Medvec & Associates, a consulting firm focused on highstakes negotiations and strategic decisions. “For many years, my clients have been asking ‘Could you write a book? Would you write a book?’” she says. “The pandemic provided me the opportunity to finally write the book that should have been written many years ago.” In Negotiate Without Fear, Dr. Medvec delivers an authoritative and practical resource for eliminating the fear that gets in the way of successful negotiations. Readers learn unique strategies honed over decades advising Fortune 500 clients on high-stakes, complex negotiations, and addresses the question that many of her clients often pose - “what would Vicki do?” Negotiate Without Fear is written for executives and all the dealmakers who work for them. Additionally, ad-
“It doesn’t seem to matter if you’re an expert negotiator or a novice, many people enter negotiations with some element of fear”
vice is provided in every chapter for individuals who are negotiating for themselves in the everyday world. “Case studies play a really important role in my book showing how good negotiation strategies work in real-life situations,” Dr. Medvec says. “I even included one about a teenager negotiating her pay at an ice cream shop. I wanted this book to be accessible to anyone who picked it up. “It doesn’t seem to matter if you’re an expert negotiator or a novice, many people enter negotiations with some element of fear. Experts fear they’ll lose the deal and novices fear engaging in conflict,” she explains. “Most people—especially women—hear the word ‘no’ and assume the conversation is over. I like to think that’s when the discussion is just getting started.” Dr. Medvec’s book was launched on July 14, 2021. A renowned expert in the areas of negotiations, executive decision making, influence, and corporate governance, Dr. Medvec teaches these topics to senior-level executives and Boards of Directors from companies around the world. In addition, she advises CEOs and their reports on critical decisions and negotiations, including mergers, acquisitions, significant customer contracts, supplier contracts, and partnership

agreements. Her clients include many household names, including McDonald’s, AbbVie, Microsoft, Google, Cisco, and McKesson to name just a few. A number of these clients have written glowing testimonials of Dr. Medvec’s book. “My Chief of Staff and long-time right-hand Barbara (Abelson) planned one of the most extraordinary book launch parties,” Dr. Medvec says. “It was at our home in Lake Forest and my husband (she married her high school sweetheart), mother, children, many family members as well
as colleagues were all able to be there. It was the most incredible night—I will never forget it.” Already in its second printing, Negotiate Without Fear is having a positive impact in board rooms and family discussions alike. “Always be fearless,” she says. “The worst someone can say is ‘no.’ And we all know how I feel about that.” Negotiate Without Fear: Strategies and Tools to Maximize Your Outcomes can be found wherever books are sold.

The Lake Forest/Lake Bluff Chamber of Commerce brings back a fall favorite to west Lake Forest on Sunday, October 10—Then and Now Auto Show: Celebrating a Century of Motorcar Excellence. words by Ann Marie Scheidler photography by Robin Subar

Claude and Audrey Ohanesian
OLKS, start your engines. The Lake Forest/Lake Bluff Chamber of Commerce, the City of Lake Forest, and an advisory committee of car enthusiasts are revving up their engines for a show like no other. On Sunday, October 10, from noon to 3 p.m. at the west Lake Forest train station and adjoining lot, the “Then and Now Auto Show: Celebrating a Century of Motorcar Excellence” will take place with a curated collection of cars for even the most discerning admirerer. “We really wanted to have an event in west Lake Forest to showcase all that is happening in that part of town,” says Joanna Rolek, executive director at the Lake Forest/Lake Bluff Chamber of Commerce. “We know that car shows and food events tend to draw crowds of all ages and we saw this as a wonderful opportunity to bring the community together.” At the suggestion of a friend, Rolek reached out to local car afficionado John Maxson for his advice on how to organize the show. Maxson serves on the Advisory Board for the Geneva Concours d’Elegance and is the activities director for Packards of Chicagoland, an organization of about 100 families who own Packard automobiles, “We went and visited the train station and I immediately saw that space would be an issue,” says Maxson, who is used to attending shows with hundreds and hundreds of cars. “But we made lemonade from lemons and decided to create a curated show where we tap 10 local experts to invite the 10 best cars in their category to come to the show.” Maxson is co-chairing the advisory committee with Ed Russ and Shaun Carter.
The advisory committee quickly pulled together a list of 10 categories of cars from pre-1950 production cars to vintage, special interest, high performance, and exotic cars that will be featured alongside luxury superstars of today. “When we began reaching out to the experts in each category, the response was very enthusiastic,” Maxson says. “Some would say they had many more than 10 cars they’d like to include and we’d have to remind them that they were limited to 10. This was a good problem to have.” The result: the best of the best cars will be on hand for the Then and Now Auto Show, cars like Claude and Audrey Ohanesian’s 1938 Packard. Claude is the Regional Director of the local Packards of Chicagoland Car Club and Treasurer for the Greater Illinois Region Classic Car Club of America. A Lake Forest resident, Claude is a lifelong car enthusiast with an eclectic collection of cars that include pre-war classics like Marmon, Lincoln Continental, Pierce-Arrow, and Packard, and more contemporary cars like a Chrysler Town and Country, Pontiac GTO, and Ford Thunderbird. At last count, the Ohanesians own about 30 antique, classic, and other special interest cars, but they are constantly buying and selling. “Being car person is a lifestyle,” explains Maxson, who bought his first car when he graduated from high school in 1964, a 1931 Model A Ford. “I don’t have a hard time remembering what my first car was because it’s still in my garage.” Maxson’s love for the auto world has driven him to co-author a book called Chicago’s Motor Row. “There’s an area in the city, down by McCormick Place from 1400 S. Michigan to 2400 S. Michigan, where all of the car dealerships used to be,” Maxson says. “Ford Motors opened the first dealership there FO REST & BLUFF 71

in the early 1900s and many of the other automakers followed soon after. Today, even though those buildings haven’t housed cars in many years, you can tell what each building was because the name of the dealer is still on it.” Maxson’s book examines the architecture of these special historical buildings, as well as the cars they showcased. It was important to Maxson that a notable car person write the forward to his book. “I really wanted Jay Leno who is known for his extensive collection of cars,” he says. “Through the various car clubs I’m in, I was able to connect with a close friend of Jay’s who told me that he’d forward my request to him, but it was unlikely Jay would be able to do it with all he had going on.” Four days later, Maxson’s phone rang and it was Leno himself. “Jay called me up like we had been friends forever,” Maxson recalls. “He said he would help me out because he wanted to tell the story of how cars changed how we live—how cars made us mobile and opened up the world.”
As luck would have it, Chicago’s Motor Row will be available for purchase just in time for the Then and Now Auto Show on October 10. In addition to the best cars at the Then and Now Show, there will be drawings for prizes, music, and the debut of the “Food & Libation Station” that will feature many of the area’s favorite eateries. The antique and classic car component will be non-judged with a Lake Forest Cup award presented. There will also be state-of-the-art fire and police vehicles. Participating partners for the event include Audi/ Porsche Exchange, Ferrari Lake Forsest, Knauz Automotive Group, Steve Foley Rolls Royce and Bentley, and Northshore Sportscars among others, each showcasing signature models. In addition to the dealerships, Big Door, Pasquesi Home & Gardens, and Hill & Stone Insurance are featured sponsors. “This will truly be a show for all ages, where there is something for everyone to see,” Maxson says. “Just cross your fingers for a beautiful day.” For more information, visit lflbchamber.com.

WHEN EXPERIENCE MATTERS In a historically tight North Shore real estate market, Joanna Koperski’s knowledge and experience offers her clients a distinct edge. words by Mitch Hurst
I
T’S NO SECRET the real estate market on the North Shore has been hotter than a mid-August day at the beach. Since the pandemic broke in spring of last year, inventory that had been on and off the market for years was scooped up by buyers wanting more space. New listings are gone in days. Finding an agent with the right experience who can help people navigate the tight market is the key for sellers to get the most value for the homes and for buyers to win their dream homes. Joanna Koperski, an agent with @properties in Lake Forest, brings a data-driven approach to helping clients find the right buyers and helping buyers find the right home. Especially in today’s market, she says buyers are increasingly sophisticated in how they’re using online search and other tools. “With the literal explosion of the market over the last two years, every aspect of our business acumen is called into play,” Koperski says. “The more extensive the library of experience, the more one has to offer one’s clients toward the success of their real estate endeavor.” Koperski says that one of the most engaging aspects of her profession is its constant variety—no two situations are ever alike, and the obvious benefit of a wealth of experience is the fact that in all probability some aspect of a given circumstance has presented itself in the past. This offers a reference point against which it may be resolved. “In a market that is moving as furiously as is this one, tempers often flare, misunderstandings occur, and impatience rules,” she says. “That vast library of experience becomes an invaluable resource and paired with a good dose of patience and a positive attitude, will calm the situation, and invariably win the day.” Koperski started her professional career in the field of marketing and advertising and developed skills that have contributed to her success in real estate. “My transition from computer graphics to real estate proved to be a happy and rewarding event, both logical and seamless,” she says. “As our business expanded, my digital
work for discriminating editors, builders and architects, as well as medical malpractice attorneys creating their huge court boards, familiarized me with the personalities soon to fill my real estate world.” Just over 10 years ago, Koperski and a group of associates decided to ask @properties to open an office in Lake Forest. At the time, @properties was a growing company renowned for its advanced technologybased approach to business and its agent-oriented culture, both characteristics proving to be attractive to her. Today, the company has grown exponentially to become the top in Illinois, with over 3,800 agents. It’s also the top producing office in Lake Forest. “That agent-centric culture continues to be the most striking difference between our company and our competitors, ensuring that support of the agent is primary,” Koperski says. “Resources such as a fully-fledged IT department constantly updating and innovating new programs and apps, as well as a marketing department supplementing our advertising efforts, ease our workload and allow us to devote more precious time toward the success of our clients.” This steady business approach that has driven the company’s growth surge the past decade benefits clients regardless of the state of the market. “My precepts remain the same. There is a solution for everything, numbers don’t lie, and technology is your friend,” Koperski says. “Concentrate on the job at hand and bring it forth to fulfillment with patience and care.” Joanna Koperski is with @properties, 600 N. Western Avenue in Lake Forest, 847-668-0096, atproperties.com.

BIGGER AND BETTER
While many agencies were subtracting staff and services the past 18 months, Webb Insurance Group—located in downtown Lake Forest, across from the Deer Path Inn—was busy adding producers and new options for customers. words by Mitch Hurst photography by Robin Subar
T
HERE’S NO QUESTION that for many industries the pandemic has presented serious business challenges, and the insurance industry is no exception. Webb Insurance Group not only met those challenges but exceeded them. The company most definitely didn’t sit still. In the past year, Webb Insurance Group, owned by Lake Forest resident, Chris Webb, has added staff to its personal and business insurance teams, , expanded to provide insurance for roofing companies, and acquired an agency that specializes in amateur sports insurance. Webb Insurance is proud of its local team from Lake Forest and Lake Bluff. Susan Ehrhard, who lives in Lake Bluff and has been in the insurance business for more than 20 years, oversees the Personal Lines division at Webb. Ehrhard has an extensive knowledge of business and personal insurance and enjoys working with clients to make sure they have the right insurance coverage for their needs. In December 2021, Matt Stockert, who raised his family in Lake Bluff, joined the Business and Personal lines teams. It’s all part of a plan to expand its practice while maintaining the company’s core value—offering insurance expertise with a local, personal touch. “When you’re an independent broker that has relationships with multiple carriers, you can give your clients more customized insurance coverage,” Webb says. “People are so happy to actually have someone pick up the phone to talk to. I think we really bring value to our customers.” Webb recently hired a new Director of Operations, Jennifer Riley, who grew up in Lake Forest, and is helping to make the new pieces fit together and maximize value for clients. “She’s our Director of Operations and she’s got us organized and flying in formation and it’s great,” he says. “I think COVID-19 has been an example of whatever industry you’re in you have to be able to pivot and you have to be able to be flexible and change your business model to survive.” Another change this past year was the name of the company. What was previously Webb Financial Group is now Webb Insurance Group, which is more reflective of the company’s core—and only—business. “We’re in the insurance business and that’s really all we do. When Jen came on board, we were talking about it, and ‘financial’ can mean a lot of things; it could be the mortgage business or it could be wealth management,” Webb says. “We just wanted to eliminate any confusion because we are in the insurance business—personal, business, employee benefits,
Amid uncertain times, Webb Insurance Group is bigger and better than before.
individual and family health insurance, life, disability and long-term care. We can be a one-stop opportunity for people and businesses for all of their insurance needs.” Webb Insurance Group has also boosted the number of relationships it maintains with insurance carriers, providing even more options for clients. “We added more insurance carriers. We now have relationships with Hanover, State Auto, and National General. Each of these companies has specific target market,” says Webb. “It’s nice to have options available to our clients to find the best fit for them. We collaborate with our clients and see ourselves as their partners in protection—protecting their homes and assets should the unexpected occur.” What distinguishes Webb Insurance Group from other independent brokers and carriers is that the company views insurance as something more than just a consumer product. Insurance touches on so many aspects of our lives, and it’s important to have the ability and experience to offer wellrounded advice and multiple solutions for customers. “I think we do a good job recognizing that in the insurance industry, there’s a lot of confusion,” Webb says. “It seems like it’s a commodity because everyone’s required to have it,” Consumers just logging on to the internet and buying policies can often lead to disaster. “We had a man who just put in all of his information online and out popped a quote and it seemed like it was right, but when you dug into the details it did not reflect his Lake Forest building,” says Webb. “You need someone who has the expertise because you spend a lot of money on insurance to protect your assets and the things you’ve worked hard for.” Webb Insurance Group is located at 250 E. Illinois Road in Lake Forest, 847-604-5354, insurancebywebb.com.

PLASTIC SURGERY UPDATE HI DEF MALE BREAST REDUCTION words by Steven Bloch, M.D.
G
ynecomastia, or over-development of the male breast, is a common condition. Some studies indicate that the incidence may be as high as 25 percent. It may be the result of heredity, disease, or the use of certain drugs. For many, it begins in puberty. If the case is mild it may disappear on its own. For more significant cases surgery is usually recommended. Often men who are serious about conditioning and developing their bodies are frustrated that no amount of dieting or exercise will allow them to sculpt their chest. This is because there is excessive fat and or breast tissue covering their muscle and so their efforts are futile. Gynecomastia can cause significant emotional problems and impair one’s self-confidence. Often it causes the male to avoid situations where his chest may be exposed. In general, gynecomastia can surgically be treated by removing excess fat, glandular tissue, and or skin. More mild cases can be improved with non-invasive treatments that destroy underlying fat. Newer techniques such as Vaser hi-definition liposuction allow one to remove larger volumes of fatty tissue thru minimal incisions and to define or sculpt the underlying pectoralis muscle. For the male that wants a truly more athletic, sculpted chiseled chest some of the fat that is removed can be prepared and injected into the muscle to give a more “buff ” appearance. Fat grafting is highly successful and the muscle feels and looks like the patient has been working out in the gym for years. Additional procedures to either reduce the nipple or areola can often be done at the same time or as a secondary procedure. For the male who suffers from the embarrassment of gynecomastia, this can be a life-changing procedure. For the male who wants a more chiseled chest and diet and exercise won’t get him there, this is the answer.
