OUR HISTORY RUNS DEEP Lake Forest Open Lands honors the land we are on by recognizing that the nature preserves we steward are the ancestral homelands of the Council of Three Fires: the Ojibwe, Odawa, and Potawatomi. These lands were also an important place of trade for many other peoples including the Sauk, Meskwaki, Miami, Menominee, Ho-Chunk and Kickapoo. We offer tribute with gratitude to the land and to the people who have stewarded it throughout the generations. We acknowledge our commitment to continuing to learn how to be better stewards of the land we care for and to strengthening our relationship with all who have come before and will come after.

On Sunday, July 25, we honored those who stood here before with a Blessing of the Land and Land Acknowledgement Statement written in partnership with the Native American community. LFOLA will offer ongoing opportunities to celebrate Native American heritage and learn about the rich culture that grounds us all. Go to LFOLA.org to learn more.

THE LIFESTYLE LIST

thing for every closet on the pages of this feature. Style isn’t confined to the closet in this issue. La Vita Branca tells the story of Casa Branca, the home collection created by internationally celebrated interior designer Alessandra Branca. Casa Branca is a multi-generational family business, with son Andrew Uhilein at the helm as President and daughter-in-law Georgia as Creative Director. Featuring fabrics and wallpapers in inspired prints and textures, Casa Branca also includes porcelains and embroidered linens for the table and bed—all created with Branca’s joyful, balanced designing eye. Beautiful, livable style for outdoor spaces has become more important than ever over the last 18 months. The Spirit of 67 Home Tour—one of our community’s most highly anticipated events—has returned this autumn with a new format, featuring the magical outdoor spaces of several Lake Forest properties. The Spirit of 67 Home Tour, Reimagined, highlights the work of this extraordinary community foundation and where the funds raised at this can’t-miss event will go. Sharing the work of organizations like the Spirit of 67, Fill a Heart 4 Kids, and Infant Welfare Society has been one of my greatest joys as Editor in Chief of Forest & Bluff. These stories would not land on F&B’s pages without our talented and tireless team of writers, photographers, editors, and designers, and I feel privileged to have worked with them during my time here. This issue will be my last as I am leaving to pursue a long-dreamed-about career path, but you will see my work pop up from time to time as a contributor. Thank you for reading and for continually inspiring with your community spirit and service.

RUTH BE TOLD, I am not sad to see summer go. Autumn—undeniably the best of the Midwest seasons—has arrived, bringing with it a low-slung light that dances through trees and bathes the world in gold. As the month of September unfolds, we are presented an exquisite study in contrast: the sun’s warmth with the shadow’s chill, jewel-toned leaves clinging to branches while their grey-brown skeletal cousins skim along the sidewalk, and the crisp night air held at bay by the enveloping weight of a down comforter. Expressing that glorious seasonal light in its many forms was the inspiration for Autumn’s Glow, our September fashion spread. Our North Shore beaches and forest canopies provided the per- WENDY FLETCHER FRANZEN fect backdrop, with fashion photogra- Editor in Chief pher David Leslie Anthony capturing the best looks of the new season. Garrett, who has a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Lake Forest College and resides in Lake Forest with her family, was recently interviewed by NBC 5 political editor, award-winning journalist, and good friend Carol Marin. The setting was an intimate interview that encouraged the sharing of little-known stories, behind-the-scenes anecdotes, and insights missing from standard biographies. The interview will be shown at the Local Legends fundraiser at the History Center on October 7, and a live Q&A with

Garrett will follow. Guests who attend the in-person event will also enjoy cocktails and small bites, time to mingle, the chance to congratulate the honoree in person, and the opportunity to participate in the live Q&A. Friends, family, and fans of the honoree can record a video congratulatory message to be shown the evening of the event—a meaningful opportunity for people who cannot attend yet want to feel present and supportive. Well wishes and congratulatory notes to Garrett can also be written for inclusion in a keepsake book that will serve as a lovely memento. As the History Center’s signature fundraiser, Local Legends helps the museum fund educational programming for virtual classrooms from grade 5 through college, expand its innovative programs, and exhibit and preserve its extensive archives. The History Center is the only organization dedicated to collecting both Lake Forest and Lake Bluff history and saving it for future generations. The 2021 Local Legends fundraiser will take place on Thursday, October 7 at 7 p.m. at the History Center, 509 E. Deerpath Road, and on Zoom. OME MAY CALL IT serendipity that Dr. Julie Brua finds herself writing her newest chapter as the School of St. Mary’s principal. “I decided before the pandemic that it was time for me to retire from the public school system,” says Dr. Brua, most recently a superintendent for the last four years at the Gavin School District in Ingleside. “But I knew I didn’t want to leave education all together. After 34 years of learning in various roles, I really felt called to serve in the Catholic schools.” As the stars aligned and Dr. Brua found her way to the School of St. Mary, she realized that her personal mission statement and that of St. Mary’s were one in the same—to learn, to serve, and to lead. “I knew my next step needed to be one where I could integrate my faith and my love of education,” she says. “We only have a small window with children to secure their faith foundation. As educators, we need to always make sure that we’re balancing strong academics and social emotional learning with the Catholic faith. I’ve never been able to do that before. Maybe on the periphery, or indirectly, but now I have the opportunity to do this as my primary role.” Dr. Brua grew up in western Illinois. She was raised in a family where the importance of education was modeled. Her father was on the school board and her mother was the school secretary. Today, Dr. Brua lives with her husband and daughter in Libertyville. She’s an avid runner, lover of John Hughes’ movies, book club member, and president of the Libertyville Junior Woman’s Club. Dr. Brua comes to St. Mary’s with breadth of educational accomplishments, including passing referendums and securing Blue Ribbons. “I’ve only been at St. Mary’s for a couple of weeks, and I can already tell what this school means to this community,” she says. “For my first 90 days or so, my most important job is getting to know people and building relationships with them. It’s critical as a new person coming into an established school to learn about its culture and honor its traditions.” “Mother Teresa is a tremendous source of inspiration to me, and her advice was to always let people know how important they are to you—that the conversation you’re having at that moment is the most important one you’ll have all day. That’s not always easy, but it’s always my goal.” Dr. Brua’s top initiative as principal is to make sure that the right educators are in the best roles for engaging the students. “I’ve been working closely with Kathy Thompson [assistant principal], Bradley Doherty [dean of students] and Mandy Castle [director of admissions] to make sure we have great classroom scenarios in place,” she says. “Then our next

task will be to dig into the long-term strategic plan for St. Mary’s. We want our students to continue to be recognized in high school as having strong academic backgrounds and character.” St. Mary’s—located on two campuses with more than 400 students enrolled— anticipates that it will open its doors this fall with as close to a normal school experience as they can offer. The Archdiocese of Chicago schools proved in 2020 that schools could safely open and operate. At a press time, Dr. Brua and her team were fielding daily calls from prospective new families. “I think we learned a lot about what it means to be resilient last year,” Dr. Brua says, explaining how she stayed longer than originally planned in her superintendent role to help her district schools navigate the year through the pandemic. “Lake County administrators are a tight group and we realized how much stronger we are when we all work together. I know we’ll continue to share ideas as we start the new year.” As the mother of a soccer player, Dr. Brua appreciates the importance of students being in a classroom with their teachers and peers and having the chance to do all of the things that students need to do—like sports, clubs, and service projects. “I’ve never felt for one day that my role in education was a job,” Dr. Brua says. “I keep saying to our pastor Fr. Nacius that I feel so lucky to have found St. Mary’s. But he often reminds me that it wasn’t luck at all—it was a blessing.” To learn more about the School of St. Mary in Lake Forest, visit schoolofstmary.org. FO REST & BLUFF 39

HEN KENDRA JOACHIM was thinking about college, she was like many of her peers and pretty unsure of what those years might look like. “The only thing I knew for sure was that I wanted to swim in college,” says 19-year-old Joachim, who had a storied swimming career at Lake Forest High School. “When COVID hit and I had to spend those months out of the water, I realized how important swimming was to me. I couldn’t imagine not being in the water again.” So, at the urging of her mother who had a friend who went to the Air Force Academy, Joachim decided to take a look. “I was blown away at how nice every single person I met at the Academy was,” she remembers. “And I couldn’t get over all of the opportunities they offered. Like when you study a language, the Air Force Academy has a program where you can go and study in that country where the language is spoken. It seemed like anything was possible.” But such opportunities don’t come easy. The process for applying to a service academy is much more involved for prospective students than the typical college application. In addition to high school grades, standardized test scores, and essays, there is an interview and fitness test required. Applicants are also asked to provide a letter of recommendation from a state senator or representative. “It was a pretty involved process, but as I worked my way through it, I became more confident that it was a place I could be successful,” Joachim says. “I’m really glad I was able to run because you do a lot of running.” In the end, Joachim had to choose between the Air Force Academy and the University of Illinois. “I liked that the Air Force was going to let me swim and that there was a real plan for my future in place,” she says. “It takes a little bit of the pressure off knowing that when I graduate, I’ll have a job waiting for me.” In exchange for Joachim receiving four years of free tuition and room and board, she will owe the Air Force five years of military service upon graduation. While many college freshmen found themselves studying from home last year, Joachim had to report to the Air Force Joachim on an obstacle course during basic training last summer in Jack’s Valley, CO.

Academy in June. Even though the rest of the world was shut down, the Air Force had to commission 1,000 new cadets into the operational Air Force in 2020. “It was a crazy time to be a freshman,” she says. “I was really nervous. We were in masks all of the time and we weren’t allowed to have our phones for the first six weeks we were on campus.” In pre-pandemic years, all of the 1,000 members of the freshmen class would do an outdoor training camp at Jack’s Valley in Colorado as a bonding exercise. But this year, the class was divided into two groups to adhere to COVID protocols. “I heard someone describe that time in Jack’s Valley as ‘the most fun you never want to have again,’” she says with a laugh. “That’s exactly what it is. It was so hard, but I was proud of myself for getting through it. You do make close friendships with the people you’re in camp with because no one understands what you’ve been through except for those who’ve done it with you.” At press time, Joachim was back on campus for her sophomore year after a short summer vacation at home. When asked if she had second thoughts about returning, she answered without hesitating at all. “I’m so grateful for this experience and what I’ve learned from the military,” Joachim explains. “The nice thing about COVID happening while I was a freshman is that I don’t have past college years to compare it to.” Life as a college student at a service academy is very different than most. While Greek life and dorm parties are the norm at most universities, no alcohol is allowed in the dorms. “There is a level of professionalism to college life at the Air Force Academy,” she says. “You work where you live, but you can still have fun within the boundaries of being a student here. And I definitely want to do more of that this year. Joachim is currently on track to pursue computer science and/or electrical engineering with the hopes that this will take her to an international base someday. “I know if I end up overseas after I graduate, it will be so hard on my mom,” says Joachim, who is an only child. “But at least she will have a fun place to visit.” FO REST & BLUFF 43

BETWEEN THE BLUFFS

THE REPRESSED AND UNWELCOMING SPECTRUM words by T-Ann Pierce illustration by Tom Bachtell

L

ET’S FACE IT. Most of us moved here for the beaches, the lake breezes, and our safe, historic neighborhoods. It is so darn pretty here, with quaint gas streetlamps and pampered trees. To have an independent bookstore and the prettiest high school in Illinois? Someone pinch me. It’s too much. Some days, living here feels like living on a movie set. Some days, it is a movie set. Sadly, idyllic living comes with a price: stereotypes. Before we moved here, I watched the movies. I read the books. I was warned. If you believe the rumors, you’d assume the whole lot of us are repressed and unwelcoming. Repressed and unwelcoming seems like a small price to pay for good schools and low taxes, so we all moved here anyway. When we moved in, I girded my loins and prepared myself for the onslaught of tut-tutting, Lilly wearing, grownup Mean Girls who would most certainly ostracize me for having a three-foot, grass skirted hula-girl lamp in my living room. These people never appeared. My first years in this town was a page out of the children’s book Are You My Mother?, where a baby bird asks all varieties of creatures, ‘Are you my mother?’ until, alas, she finds her missing mother. Like that baby bird, I ambled through church basements, networking events, and elementary, middle, and high school gymnasiums in search of soul sisters, earnestly asking every woman I met, ‘Are you not repressed?’ We’ve lived here for nearly ten years. I feel comfortable reporting the findings of my highly unscientific study: There is a Repressed and Unwelcoming Spectrum. At one end of the spectrum there is the personification of a NOLA Mardi Gras Parade (these people exist here). On the other end of the Repressed and Unwelcoming spectrum envision Mary Tyler Moore’s, icy character in Ordinary People, the Academy Award winning film set and shot in Lake Forest.

From my data, I can confirm the vast majority of us fall somewhere in the middle of the spectrum. Most of us are hot messes with fabulous looking social media feeds. Most of us are the kind of people who lose our sh*t with our kids and hope our neighbor didn’t hear. In all likelihood, the neighbor did hear us yelling, but the neighbor will say she didn’t because she’s in the middle of the spectrum, too. She’s just so relieved you aren’t repressed and unwelcoming. Middle-of-the-spectrum people are my favorite. I have personally never met anyone in this community who fits the repressed and unwelcoming stereotype. I’m not saying these folks do not exist. I assume they do. I’m just saying I haven’t run into them in the places I tend to socialize: in the veterinary parking lot, at the cheese counter, or on the sidewalk in front of my house. Perhaps repressed and unwelcoming people gather elsewhere; I don’t know. Despite not personally knowing any repressed or unwelcoming people, I do owe those elusive people a debt of gratitude. Those poor people slog around, almost singlehandedly upholding this community’s negative stereotypes. What commitment! Considering their sacrifice, I shouldn’t want for more, however I have to admit it would be wonderful, if occasionally, we got thrown a bone and one of those repressed and unwelcoming people would slowly morph into a flamboyant, old school, repressed character, the kind who eats cat food and vodka for breakfast and walks pet raccoons to the hardware store on Tuesday mornings. They have those kinds of repressed and unwelcoming types in The Hamptons. We could really use a couple of those here. For more information or to tell her where you think you fall on the spectrum, check out T-Ann’s websites: t-annpierce.com and theconfidencetriangle.com. ENTERTAINING Greet guests with this refreshing, simple Prohibition Era cocktail at your first early autumn gathering. recipe by Fletcher & Fork

The Bee’s Knees serves one Ingredients • 2 ounces gin • 3/4 ounce lemon juice • 3/4 ounce honey syrup (recipe below) • 1 large egg white • Strip of lemon peel, for garnish Instructions • Fill a coupe glass with ice and set aside to chill. • Place lemon juice, gin, honey syrup, and egg white in a cocktail shaker. Cover and shake vigorously. • Take a peek in the shaker: when egg white is foamy, add ice, recover, and give it a few more shakes. • Discard ice from glass, draining it of any residual water. Strain shaker contents into the glass. Garnish with the lemon peel. For the Honey Syrup: Place 1/2 cup honey and 1/2 cup water in a small saucepan over medium heat. Whisk gently and frequently until honey is dissolved, about 5 to 10 minutes. Set aside and allow to cool thoroughly. Store in a closed container in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 weeks. RESH OUT OF THE cheesemaking vats, cheese curds squeak when you bite them and have a milky, mild flavor. Coated in crumbs or batters and deep fried, they transform to crisp-shelled, melty morsels that are hard to resist. But I couldn’t help but wonder: Why are most curds on offer so much the same? “Most curds on the market are cheddar,” explains Master Cheesemaker Chris Renard of Renard’s Cheese and Rosewood Dairy in Door County. “Some makers add flavorings after the curds are made, and a few sell other varieties of curds, but I think cheddar is better-eating. The shape and texture work well for deep frying, and the cheddar taste is very popular.” Renard’s sells a million pounds of fresh cheddar cheese curds every year—a huge difference from when Chris was growing up in the ‘70s and Renard’s sold only 20 pounds a week. Another reason Renard says cheesemakers usually only market cheddar curds is that others, such as those for Muenster cheese, are more granular, with smaller shapes that wouldn’t work as well battered and fried. Curds can have subtle differences in taste, depending on everything from the quality of the milk, to what the cows were eating, to the microflora that exists in every cheesemaking facility. But bigger flavor differences come from the style and make of the cheese—especially if another animal’s milk is used. This got me thinking about fried cheese curd origins. As much as Wisconsin might wish to claim provenance for the snack, that distinction goes to the ancient Romans. The oldest surviving work of Latin Prose, De Agri Cultura (On Farming), written by Cato the Elder in 160BC, included a recipe for globuli, little globs of cheese curds rolled in flour, fried in hot fat, drizzled with honey and a sprinkle of poppy seeds. And since the Romans preferred milk from goats and sheep over cows, it’s likely globuli were made using curds from those milks. So it was that armed with a few pounds of goat’s milk curds from LaClare Family Creamery in Malone, WI, I set out to create this dish: goat’s milk curds with a tempura shell, finished with a drizzle of honey, finely snipped herbs, and lavender blossoms. I was skeptical about goat’s milk curds at first, thinking they’d be soft as chevre and too goat-y in flavor. But as it turns out, they have a surprisingly firm texture and mildly tangy flavor. And with fresh herbs, lavender, and honey they are delicious! You’ll use seltzer water (Lemon LaCroix works great!) in the batter with cake flour—don’t worry that it’s thin, this makes for a lovely fine crust that fries up quickly. Be sure to use very fresh curds, and for meltiest interiors, eat as soon as they come out of the fryer basket.

For the Goats-Milk Curds: • High-heat oil (rice-bran, peanut, or grapeseed) for deep fat fryer • 2 pounds fresh goat’s milk curds (available from LaClare Family Creamery) • 1 cup cornstarch (for coating curds before dipping in batter) • 1 1/4 cups cake flour sifted with 1 tablespoon cornstarch • Pinch of salt • 1 1/2 cups Lemon LaCroix sparkling water (or plain seltzer water) • 1/2 cup honey • 1 teaspoon each finely snipped fresh rosemary and thyme leaves • 1/2 teaspoon fresh lavender blossoms (or substitute finely chopped dried culinary lavender, available from Fragrant Isle Lavender Farm) Method: Follow manufacturer instructions to fill deep-fat fryer with oil. Preheat to 360 degrees. Place 1 cup cornstarch in wide shallow bowl. Set aside. In a second bowl, whisk 1 tablespoon cornstarch with 1 ¼ cups cake flour and a pinch of salt. Whisk in sparkling water. Individually roll cheese curds in cornstarch, shaking off excess starch. Dip coated curds in batter (the batter will be thin) and add to fryer basket. Fry four or five curds at a time, being careful not to crowd the basket. Fry about two to three minutes per batch, until bubbling has subsided a bit and fried curds are golden. Remove fried curds to paper toweling to blot oil. Place in serving dish. Drizzle with honey and sprinkle with snipped herb leaves and lavender blossoms. Serve immediately.

Is there a recipe you’re dying to have? E-mail us at thedish@jwcmedia.com and we’ll start digging.

NURTURING BIRDS THROUGH AUTUMN

A backyard suet feeder provides sustenance for a Red-bellied Woodpecker.

F

EED THE BIRDS, PLEASE. One of the great persisting myths in backyard bird care is that feeders should be taken in during the fall season. Some well-intention bird lovers bring in hummingbird, seed, and suet feeders, mistakenly believing that providing food throughout autumn delays or stops migration, but this is not true. Shortened day light hours and changes in temperature are what trigger the departure of migrating birds. As they prepare for this lengthy trip south, birds need extra sustenance that our feeders can provide. If they are accustomed to a feeder throughout summer, taking it down may prevent building the necessary body fat required for their long journey. All birds are gearing up for change during autumn. Nonmigrating birds are also working to pack in calories and fatten up, preparing for the frigid midwestern winters. They frequent feeders more often and remain for longer periods of time, eating much more at one sitting compared to their summer feeding sessions. Migrating birds stopping by for a quick meal on their way to warm environs as well as non-migrating birds who have made a particular back yard home benefit from suet feeders, which provide food high in protein and fat. Soft fruits like apples and pears are also loved by birds, who are not the slightest bit picky about a wrinkle here or a blemish there the way children are! Hummingbirds, too, need sustenance before their migration. Their feeders can be removed and stored for the winter, but it is important to wait until later in the season, when several weeks have passed without a sighting.

ticular importance. Moving water (made possible with a mister or bubbler) is especially attractive to birds and may draw unique passersby in for a dip or drink during migration—a great bonus for the armchair birdwatcher. Birdbaths should be placed in a safe, open place far from predators, if possible. And adding a birdbath warmer, available at hardware stores and garden centers, prevents water from freezing over when the mercury dips, keeping your permanent residents hydrated and happy.

Create a space that nurtures, naturally. Seed heads from flowers and perennial plants feed feathered friends for months. Sunflowers provide nourishment from late summer to early fall, especially if planting is staggered from early spring to midsummer. Spent sunflower heads can be cut and placed in a dry area to dehydrate, then hung near feeders. Native perennials should be left alone until spring—their seeds will provide great nutrition. Black-eyed Susans, asters, coneflowers, goldenrod, and thistle are just a few of the flowers that provide helpful food well into winter. And they look beautiful dusted in snow! Finally, autumn is the perfect time to plant end-of-seasondiscounted perennials. The cooler temperatures also make it a great time to put in native shrubs and trees, giving birds something to eat and shelter from predators and inclement weather. When planting and clean-up is complete, make a brush pile with the cast-offs, cuttings, and leaves, which offers Provide fresh water, consistently. A regular supply of wa- birds and other critters foraging opportunities (not to mention ter is integral to the health of birds in all seasons, but the great hiding and resting spots). This natural shelter, along with consistent, nourishing temperature pendulum swings drastically here in autumn. With sweltering early season moments and freezing nights food and fresh, flowing water, will keep our feathered friends later on, providing a steady, clean water source carries par- healthy and give them reason to return, year after year. F IT’S RAINING LETTERS—as in written letters, tucked inside envelopes—it must be either field hockey season or girls lacrosse season at Lake Forest High School. Cat Catanzaro coaches both varsity teams. On the eve of each game, following a team huddle, Catanzaro tosses the paperwork skyward and walks away. A drop-themic moment, without a shred of boastfulness. Her Scouts then turn into instant outfielders, eager to dart here or dive

there to catch the fluttering envelopes. Handwritten names—of starters, of nonstarters—adorn each envelope. Inside? Motivational words, entreaties to fight for every ball tomorrow, a list of the next opponent’s strengths, fun stories, heartfelt words. Catanzaro eschews the mass-email and group-text routes in the Age of Convenience. Too easy, too impersonal. Cat’s players head home and read Cat’s sentences before their heads hit pillows. The 20th player on a team of 20 closes her eyes and feels as ap-

THE SPORTING LIFE preciated as the star player does. “I got the letter-system idea in college, my freshman year, when a field hockey teammate put a letter in all of the players’ mailboxes the night before a big game,” says the 44-year-old Catanzaro, a field hockey sweeper and two-time All-American at Longwood College (now University) in Farmville, Virginia. “It pumped all of us up. “I remember thinking, ‘Oh, this is so cool.’ ” Wins mean the world to Catanzaro, a Wellness teacher at LFHS. But a “W” in her book isn’t just something that’s earned on a playing field or a letter that appears, uppercase and lowercase, in her letters to players. Say a Scout plays four seasons under the direction of Catanzaro, learns all kinds of invaluable life lessons in practices and games, and plays zero minutes at a prestigious college but graduates summa cum laude. That’s a major “W” in Catanzaro’s book. Some of that Scout’s summa must have started growing years earlier near the end of, say, a tight game against New Trier High School. Or in the middle of a grueling drill before a playoff game. “I put much more emphasis on the process of developing a team and developing individuals—on and off the field— than I do on results,” says Catanzaro, who lives in Gurnee with her husband, Lake Forest College Director of Athletics and Head Football Coach Jim Catanzaro, and their children, Caden, 9, and Katie, 5. “I’d like to think that experiences gained through sports helped my players get accepted by schools with highly regarded academic reputations. I’m a demanding, high-energy coach, who never wants her players to walk at anytime during a practice; practices should be constant running and more intense than games.” Cat met Jim when both were college coaches in North Carolina, Cat at Catawba College (field hockey) in Salisbury, Jim at Wingate University in Wingate. Cat at Catawba. Fitting. Perfect. The campuses stand nearly 70 miles apart. Intense football rivals. The onerous recruiting aspect in college athletics pushed Cat to return to the coaching ranks in the prep realm. The coach of a Texas state runner-up girls lacrosse team (Episcopal School) in the early 2000s, Catanzaro guided Highland Park High School’s girls lax team from 2006-2008 and launched the Warren Township High School girls lacrosse program before the start of the 2009 season. She has coached the Scouts’ varsity lacrosse team since 2014 and the Scouts’ varsity field hockey team since 2017, following a seven-year tenure as LFHS JV field hockey coach. Catanzaro’s 2017 field hockey crew captured the state title and her next two editions finished as state runner-up. “Coach Cat is creative and organized—that’s the best way to describe her,” says Gracie McGowan, a 2020 LFHS graduate and a Princeton University sophomore field hockey defender/midfielder. “I loved those letters we got before games. I still have them, all of them. They’re in a box. I’ve known her since 2009, because my older sister (Ginny) played for Cat’s teams. I knew, right after meeting her for the first time, that she was a great coach. “Her communication skills are amazing,” McGowan adds. “She gives good advice about sports, about life, about any-

thing. When you’re on one of her teams, you’re going to hear something insightful from her, every day.” Barbara Canty (LFHS, Class of 2018) is a senior field hockey goalie at Sewanee (University of the South), in Tennessee. She, too, misses Cat’s letters, as well as the coach’s sense of humor and the team camaraderie that Catanzaro engenders through her leadership and personality. “Coach Cat is an extraordinary and inspiring coach,” a grateful Canty says. “She trusted me and always pushed me to do my best. We knew what we needed to focus on each game because we had read those letters and reflected on their messages, the night before. Through those letters, which were stories, she made it clear that every person on the team would have something to contribute, even those who wouldn’t play the next day.” Cat, the coach, disappears briefly every spring around prom time. That’s when Cat, the friend/second mother/ protector, shows up after a practice and addresses the team huddle. “I tell them, ‘If you’re at prom and you feel you can’t handle something, call me. I will come and get you and make sure you’re safe,’ ” Catanzaro says. “I would do anything for my players. Anything. My players are part of my family. Our son, Caden, has hundreds of ‘brothers’, who are Jim’s football players. “And his ‘sisters’ are all of my players.” FO REST & BLUFF 71

IKE MANY organizations over the past 18 months, the Spirit of 67 board had to reimagine what their fundraising was going to look like this year. And what a vision they have created. 2021 Home Tour: Outdoor Spaces will be a special event showcasing the beauty of the Lake Forest community, taking place on Thursday, September 30. The Tour will include four to six homes, depending on which ticket level is purchased. Most of the spaces have never been seen by the public. “We found these truly special homes, owned by caring, generous families—all with different, exceptional, and unique attributes,” says Kimberly Carris, president of the Spirit of 67 board. While Carris and other board members ensure that all of the homes are stunningly gorgeous, they also promise that one of the homes “will elevate the whole home tour experience.” Additionally, there will be tasty small bites offered at each of the homes. Lauren Peters, one of three event co-chairs—along with Lauren Kelly and Edwina Smith—says, “The outdoor spaces format allows guests to approach our event in a totally different way. Typically, the home tour includes a luncheon, and that makes it a much more formal event. Because we will be walking through gardens and across grass this year, the whole thing will feel a little more casual. In fact, we will be offering a walking tour map, so that guests who want to walk the tour with friends wearing workout clothes can do so, while people who want to get dressed up for a day out can do it that way, too! We know how excited our parents are to connect socially post-COVID, and we want this event to offer every option to do so.” If touring these breathtaking outdoor spaces isn’t enough, each home will feature gorgeous tablescapes from a variety local shops and designers. One of the homes will feature a boutique selling Impressionist and contemporary art, jewelry, and housewares. Spirit of 67 will receive a portion of those proceeds. Additionally, one of the homes will feature a room highlighting various grants the Spirit of 67 has sponsored over its 38-year history. Laurie Whisler, vice president of the Spirit board, is looking forward to being able to “showcase the grants in our homes. It is very meaningful to show our parents and other members of the community exactly what we do and where the funds we raise are going.” “We are the sole fundraising arm for the Lake Forest District 67 schools, which are the elementary grades from kindergarten up through eighth grade,” Whisler explains. “We’re a 501c3 organization,” Carris continues. “Our mission is to raise money every year to provide funds that enhance the educational and cultural experiences for our school community. It is important to note that parents, students, and teachers can all request grants, for anything from special school projects to programs and equipment for the District of 67. We’ve funded improvements to the science labs and libraries. We’ve funded audio-visual systems and playgrounds. And these are just a few examples. Our goal is to have an impact and to touch every student in every school, every day.”

A floral still life on hand-wrapped linen canvas by Amy Pais-Richer sits in the garden of one of the featured Outdoor Spaces. This work will be available in the boutique on September 30.

“When the pandemic hit last year, we had to reinvent ourselves, be creative, and raise funds virtually. This year we’re incredibly happy to provide an in-person, outdoor, safe event that will bring our community together,” Carris says. The Spirit of 67 Home Tour is a highly anticipated event that the community looks forward to each year. In order to do it safely, the board shifted to this outdoor concept and switched from their traditional spring timing to fall. “One of the things I’ve always been impressed with is how hard-working, flexible, and forward-thinking the Spirit of 67 board and our volunteers are. We really are doing all we can to enhance the education—for not only our children, but for our community’s children. For me, that has always been something I’ve found very impactful,” Whisler says. “It is a fabulous organization to work with—they just get it done.” Echoing that sentiment is Carris: “The board is a high achieving team that cares deeply about our community, just like our families and the homeowners who are graciously opening their homes for the benefit of our students.” And while Peters is relatively new to the board, she is no less enthusiastic. “This is going to be a fabulous event! It is truly my perfect day and I think most people will agree. Spending time with friends, outside looking at beautiful spaces (incredibly beautiful … we can’t reveal what homes are on the tour, but they will not disappoint) and raising money for our kids’ schools is just fun. We are pretty lucky that helping our schools looks like this.” Peters continues, “In addition, we’ve all done a lot of shifting in the past couple of years. Helping our kids learn and stay healthy through COVID-19 quarantines and e-learning has been a huge challenge for teachers and parents alike. This upcoming school year represents a new opportunity for our kids and our teachers to engage in person. At the same time, we are welcoming a new superintendent of schools and the changes that will bring. Coming together as parents to support an event designed to help our schools is a privilege, and this year it represents a fresh start. The best thing we can do as the strong community that we are is to put the challenges of the past couple of years behind us and move forward celebrating that. At the end of the day, we all care about the same thing: our kids and creating the best future possible for them.” For more information, visit spiritof67foundation.org. FO REST & BLUFF 83

La Vita BRANCA

Renowned Italian designer Alessandra Branca unveils a new atelier led by her son, Andrew Uihlein, that will serve as a modern extension of her iconic Branca line. words by Sherry Thomas photography by Monica Kass Rogers styling by Theresa DeMaria

Andrew Uhilein and Georgia McElveen in the Casa Branca atelier’s living room.

EAR THE NAME Alessandra Branca and the first thing to come to mind might be the Infant Welfare Society of Chicago’s beloved Lake Forest Showhouse & Garden fundraiser. If you’ve visited any of the biennial showcase homes over the last decade, you’ve likely seen her unforgettable take on these designer spaces—often bursting with vibrant color, European fabrics, classical antiques, and timeless elegance. Branca, who was born in Rome, Italy, and moved to the Chicago area more than 30 years ago to attend school at the former Barat College in Lake Forest, built her international design brand on the concept that living well requires comfort, elegance, and whimsy. Whether it was the inspired collaboration she did with Mariani Landscape and Lake Forest florist Molly Flavin on a decadent outdoor patio and gardens in 2017 or the lecture she presented on The New Living Room in 2015 (while also serving as honorary chair), Branca’s renowned contributions over the years have helped elevate the status of the fundraiser on a national level.

The atelier’s dining table is set with Casa Branca’s Bosco porcelain dishes, Essentia dinner napkins and placemats, tulip candelabras, and twist water glasses in gold and red. The walls are papered in Casa Branca’s Bosco pattern.

Now, the next generation of that classical Alessandra Branca aesthetic is coming to a showroom on Chicago’s Gold Coast, where Branca raised her family. Casa Branca, a design atelier run by Branca’s son, Andrew Uihlein, will bring an eclectic new collection of refined textiles, playful prints, textural wallpapers, and one-of-a-kind home accessories to the trade and ultimately, the public. “Casa Branca allows more people access to our designs. Anyone can buy a piece of ‘la vita Branca’,” explains Branca, who launched the first Casa Branca showrooms in Los Angeles and Palm Beach with a pop-up version in New York City. “We are hoping to be in your primary residence, whether that is loft or house, and then your beach pad or your mountain cabin. The whole point is to offer a range of lifestyles to many

and then teach them how to mix them into their existing interiors. Our wool tartans mix with florals and velvets as easily as our linen weaves mix with wool and outdoor textiles. It is all in the fun you can have mixing it up!” Andrew Uihlein took over the helm of Casa Branca in Los Angeles three years ago to help grow the next chapter of his mother’s iconic brand. “It’s been an interesting process to figure out how do we ‘distill Alessandra’ for a new generation,” says Andrew, who leads as President while wife, Georgia McElveen, serves as Vice President and Head of Design. “It’s also been interesting learning how we work together as a family.” FO REST & BLUFF 87

don or New York, there’s no shortage of taste on the North Shore and Chicago, and we’re going through another design renaissance in the city.” Alessandra Branca founded her legendary Branca line in Chicago, bringing her own mother, botanical artist Anna Chiara, into the company almost immediately. In that sense, Andrew says he considers himself to be the third generation to join the family business. “When we designed Casa Branca, we talked about what things are going to be like in 10 years with these very clean, modern spaces with lots of white and almost an aversion of color and pattern. A big part of Casa Branca is championing color and making people feel more comfortable using pattern and color,” Andrew explains. “We are going through a period right now where people want a modern apartment with a modern kitchen but that doesn’t translate into the warmest experience. And on the North Shore, people are more familiar with having your home as a social center, and that’s where we come in. We’re almost a bridge between generations and a bridge between aesthetic styles.” This modern take on Branca empowers customers to fill their homes with designs and pieces that are more personalized, more inspired, and more unique. “Especially since the pandemic, people are infusing personal touches into their homes. Design is a reflection of themselves but it’s also aspirational,” adds Andrew. “That aspirational approach to living is richer when it’s paired with interiors and objects that are more personal and filled with color.” Georgia says it’s been an honor to help fulfill Alessandra’s vision. “With Casa Branca, she wanted to share the joy of interior design with everyone else—to show how much it can be and how easy it can be,” she says. “Interior design can feel intimidating so that’s why we’re here, to showcase pieces that can easily be mixed and matched for your own take on the classics.” Alessandra says she finds tremendous joy in working with the next generation through Casa Branca. “My designs are a way of looking at life and living that is timeless. I believe in great quality mixed with a bit of humor and modernism,” she says. “I have been working with multigenerational families for years doing their homes and now I get to enjoy working with my own family day to day. They have a wonderfully fresh point of view, and it is fun to see the world through their young lenses.”

Georgia, who says that she and Andrew have known each other since they were 3 years old, was the first to join Casa Branca, “I was in New York working for an auction house and Andrew was working for U-Line when Alessandra had me sourcing items for her brand. From there, she hired me fulltime to do all the Casa Branca collaborations. I was working closely with the people she hired in L.A. to do her patterns and textiles,” says Georgia, adding that it was her idea to bring in Andrew as President as he was finishing his MBA at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Business in 2018. “We needed a business mind.” “And I pretended to be just that person,” laughs Andrew. “I came on board and was just really compelled to take Alessandra’s massive volume of ideas and build them into a collection.” He says that while Casa Branca’s Chicago showroom is located on the Gold Coast, the family’s ties to the North Shore remain enduring. “Alessandra’s entry way to the United States was through Barat College, and it was through Barat College that in 1978 she met my father, Steve, who was born in Lake Bluff and went to Lake Forest Country Day School,” Andrew explains. “For me personally and for Georgia, we could not be happier about this Chicago location. Even if it doesn’t make sense on paper to Casa Branca is located at 5 E. Goethe Street in Chicago. CUSTOM BUILT McNaughton Development’s new Amberley Court construction in Lake Forest caters to empty nesters and others looking for customizable homes that match their lifestyle. words by Mitch Hurst rendering by McNaughton Development

M

CNAUGHTON Development, based in Burr Ridge, has been designing and building luxury homes in the Chicago area for decades, mostly in the west suburbs. For the first time, the company is open for business on the North Shore. McNaughton is building 19 new homes in Amberley Court in Lake Forest, conveniently located just east of Interstate 94. The family owned and run business takes pride in a personal touch. “We’re a second-generation family business. Paul McNaughton Sr. started the company almost 40 years ago and it started as a high-end custom home builder, a lot of customization for the customer and a lot of choice,” says Paul McNaughton Jr., General Counsel and Head of Operations. “Then, the company kind of evolved into a land development company as well.” As the company has moved into purchasing and developing land, it has not moved away from its core values of design and customization. “We take a lot of pride in our designs. We labor over our architecture and make sure that we’re keeping up with the latest trends and products that make sense based on the demographic we’re trying to reach,” McNaughton says. “For example, in Lake Forest, we think this particular location is great for empty nesters, for somebody who’s got the big house and wants to downsize. We cater our architecture specifically for that buyer.” McNaughton Development fills a niche that slots in between big national developers, such as Pulte, and boutique residential home construction companies that might build 10 or 12 homes a year. In Lake Forest, it wants to cater to buyers who are looking for a customized home without the hassle of keeping it up. “The biggest thing that empty-nesters are looking for is obviously a first-floor master, so that’s the architecture that we’re offering, ranch plans, where everything’s on the first floor,” McNaughton says. “And I would say the other thing is, they’re looking for low-maintenance building materials. A lot of them will be snowbirds and they don’t want to worry about maintenance when they’re away.” For Amberley Court, McNaughton Developers

plans to manage a homeowner’s association that will take care of routine maintenance, such as lawn-cutting and snowplowing. “It will be turn-key, run by the association,” McNaughton says. “Some developers are a little bit wary about a homeowner’s association fee, but in these kinds of markets we have a proven track record of people really liking the ability to just pay a set fee and not having to worry about it.” Amberley Court was originally developed about 15 years ago by a local architect and then a large home builder bought the land and constructed three homes, and McNaughton says it has languished since that time. Given the hot real estate market on the North Shore and in Lake Forest during the past 18 months, the time is ripe for new construction. “The new construction market has, especially earlier in this year, been really strong, particularly with people coming out of the city,” McNaughton says. “It’s definitely benefited us as builders.” McNaughton Development is located in Burr Ridge, 630-325-3400, mcnaughtondevelopment.com.

PLASTIC SURGERY UPDATE EVOLVE TITE words by Steven Bloch, M.D.

S

ince I can’t operate on myself and I’m a control freak, I’ve invested heavily over the years in non-invasive technology to reverse or delay the aging process. Before I buy any of these technologies for my patients, I first try them out on myself. It must pass certain criteria. Is it safe? Is it effective? Is it painful? Is there downtime. Is it cost effective? Is it better than what I already have? I am happy to report and introduce Evolve Tite—a non-invasive thermal skin tightening and cellulite treatment. Evolve Tite targets tissue deep below the skin’s surface with the use of radio- frequency technology to stimulate collagen production. It does require multiple treatments to achieve the desired results, but unlike other treatments that we offer this is PAIN FREE. There is no bruising and no downtime, and it is good for all skin types. You can safely treat any area of the body where there is laxity of the skin or skin texture irregularities. Treatments are customized to individual concerns and can address single area or multiple zones depending on the patient’s goals. The only thing a patient will feel is basically a warm sensation. Treatments take about 30 minutes. There are no disposables so treatments are affordable. When combined with other non-invasive technologies, we can safely “destroy” fat and tone underlying muscles. If this is something you are interested in the next step is to set up a consultation.

Tiffany Knot

A

NOD OF RESPECT TO Tiffany’s hometown, the Tiffany Knot designs are inspired by an architectural symbol taken from the streets of New York— the chain-link. Transforming the familiar industrial shape into something that is modern and refined, Tiffany injects the energy of its city into its new jewelry collection. In a city that commands strength of character and an unspoken understanding of one another, New Yorkers are individualists who are also part of something larger together. Mastering the art of ‘making it’ in New York—as in Chicago—demands a strong sense of self and a certain state of mind. This is the spirit behind Tiffany Knot. It is subversive and audacious, worn as both a statement of rebellion and a talisman of connection. An interplay of opposites, Tiffany Knot contrasts smooth organic forms with striking jagged angles on

bracelets, rings, necklaces, pendants, and earrings. All featuring the signature graphic knot motif, the 18k yellow and rose gold styles and pavé diamond iterations come together with sleek curves of precious metal and pointed edges that add sharp dimensionality. The collection’s hero piece is a double-wrap choker that is hand-set with over 300 diamonds, instilling the design with movement and scale. On bracelets with a double-wrap effect, seen above, the 18k gold knot conceals the clasp, making it appear as one continuous, connected design. Tiffany Knot reflects the exacting standards that drive the House’s constant search for innovations in craftsmanship, rigor of form and precision of proportions. The Tiffany Knot Double Wrap bracelets, seen above, and the entire Tiffany Knot collection will be available beginning this month at the Northbrook Court location and Tiffany & Co. stores worldwide.
