EBRUARY in Chicago!! Oh, how fun; if you like cold, snowy weather. Haha! Personally, this is the month I typically like to travel to a warm destination. However, in these uncertain times, we must look to other options than the destinations we are all used to. In this month’s issue, “It’s time for a STAY-cation,” goes inside the newly, and beautifully redesigned Ritz Carlton, Chicago, reminding you of the perfect getaway for a romantic Valentine’s weekend. And to add to this, our style and beauty pages offer gorgeous selections of cozy sweaters, as well as skin care products to keep your face glowing. Our cover story, “Family Matters,” looks at Lake Forest Native, Brian Dacy’s balancing act between what’s most important in his life (his family) and running a successful pediatric medical device company. Both heartwarming and inspiring! Have you ever been tempted

THE DISH to jump in Lake Michigan in the winter? Sounded kinda crazy to me, but Scott Carter, who started the group Lake Forest Plungers, explains the physical and mental health benefits. Maybe one day I’ll give it a try. Finally, in “Wrap it up,” I leave you with some great gift ideas, most locally sourced, for that special sweetheart in your life. Happy Valentine’s Day!

HE MISSION OF Lake Forest Open Lands Association (LFOLA) is to acquire, restore, and preserve natural landscapes in our local community to ensure that all people have a connection to, and appreciation of, nature and the open spaces found right where we live. That mission was enhanced recently with the acquisition of a 102-acre natural landscape, prominently sited on the north side of Half Day Road at Old Mill Road. Originally slated for a 265-unit mixed-use development, it will now be permanently protected, and LFOLA plans to restore the land and create a nature preserve for the public to enjoy. “The owner of the property felt it was a privilege for the family to care for and enjoy this special place for many years,” said trustee Lori Lousararian of MNR Realty LLC, a previous owner of the property. “Key to the decision to donate the land was Lake Forest Open Lands’ promise not only to preserve the wetlands, meadows, and woodlands, but also to restore the land over time to its natural splendor and share it with everyone.” LFOLA president and CEO John Sentell says the permanent preservation of the landscape has been a priority for the conservation community for some time. The newlyprotected Westfork Savanna—with outstanding habitat and water quality value in its own right—is also bordered to the north by the 109-acre Florsheim Nature Preserve (FNP), owned by the Village of Lincolnshire. With its unique prairie and oak flatwood habitats, FNP holds the distinction as a dedicated Illinois Nature Preserve. “Over the years, we’ve learned that larger, connected ecosystems can successfully support a greater diversity of species richness,” Sentell says. “We believe the greenway connectivity of Westfork Savanna with the nature preserve to the north will be of greater benefit not only to the plants and animals who depend upon it, but to the many residents who appreciate nature.” Some of the species that will benefit include the Illinois chorus frog, wood duck, monarch butterfly, red-headed woodpecker, blue spotted salamander, smooth green snake, and bobolink, among many others that have been found either on the Westfork Savanna site or nearby. “Westfork Savanna is one of the largest land preservation projects we’ve had, and in our area a property of this size does not become available often,” Sentell says. “The fact that it’s contiguous to another preserved site of 109 acres makes it even more important.” Sentell says that many people who visit some of Lake Forest Open Lands’ preserves might be surprised that they’re not just beautiful, but they have some of the rarest, high-quality native landscapes in Illinois.

Westfork Ephemeral Wetland

“Throughout our portfolio of preserved properties, we have many threatened and endangered species, along with over 270 different bird species,” he says. “In some sense, it’s almost as if we live within a small national park. The birds, plants, and animals don’t see the property boundaries that we do. These large scale, preserved properties are a critical anchor for nature that become virtually interconnected with the surrounding landscapes” Important to restoring and preserving Westfork Savanna —and to all LFOLA’s work—is involving the community in the effort. “We want to engage people. We want to not only have it be a place where nature can thrive, but where people can thrive as well,” says Sentell. “Our goal is to reach out to the community to help restore Westfork Savanna, and then when ready, to open it up as a public nature preserve so people can enjoy what they helped restore.” When that happens, LFOLA will be fulfilling the donor’s intent. “It was the donor’s life-long dream to save an undeveloped piece of nature,” Sentell says. “It is Lake Forest Open Lands’ honor to help fulfill that dream and share it with everyone.” For more about Lake Forest Open Lands Association, visit lfola.org. COLD COMFORT

Scott Carter

Lake Forest resident Scott Carter and his fellow Lake Forest Plungers take frequent dips in the icy waters, improving their physical and mental health. by Mitch Hurst

A

WEEK AFTER Thanksgiving in 2020, Scott Carter was in an emotional rut and having a hard time picking himself up. While chatting with his friend, Rich Hill, and describing his state of mind, Hill suggested Carter should head down to Rogers Park, where Hill lived, some morning soon at 5:30 a.m. And that he

wear his swimsuit. Early in December, Carter did just that. It would be the beginning of a positive change to Carter’s mental and physical health, and ultimately the health of other Lake Forest and Lake Bluff residents as well. “When Rich told me what we were about to do, I thought, ‘Oh gosh, I don’t know.’ But then I was like, ‘What the heck? Let’s go for it. What do I have to lose?’” Carter says. “I was definitely skeptical. I was nervous going down there because it was cold. The weather was cold, and the water was in the forties.”

Lake Forest Plungers

A coach by profession, Hill talked Carter through the process of cold-water immersion, a common practice in many countries across world and gaining popularity in the U.S. “We went in, and sat in the water for a few minutes, and I got out and I was just turbocharged emotionally and physically,” Carter says. “I had just sat in freezing cold water for a short time and I’m on cloud nine. I never expected it. I just thought it was going to be a checked box, but I trust Rich and the whole rest of my day was different.” Carter was hooked. He took a few more dips in Lake Michigan at Lake Forest Beach, just to work through the process on his own, and it had the same effect. He rang up three of his friends and asked them to join him, telling them of the amazing effects he was experiencing. Then more joined, including friends from Lake Bluff. Lake Forest Plungers was born. “There’s a good 30 people who show up at some point throughout the week, many of whom show up multiple times,” Carter says. “I’m there between three and five times a week.” It’s difficult to pinpoint when “polar bear plunges” were invented, but some sources point to civilizations dating back to ancient Greece and Rome understanding the benefits of dipping one’s body in water of varying temperatures, both cold and hot. Research shows it can boost cardiovascular circulation, strengthen the immune system, improve mental health, and increase energy levels. There’s also evidence it improves sleeping patterns and prolongs one’s lifespan. While Carter has touted the health benefits to those who join Lake Forest Plungers, the community is also important. “The benefit is the type of people the group attracts. They’re all just extremely positive and supportive, and you go into the day with this jolt of optimism,” Carter says. “That’s a byproduct of the experience that it attracts this group of people who are authentic, vulnerable, and supportive. That part is just cool.” Carter says it’s necessary to the process, especially on very cold day when conditions may be icy, to get one’s mind right and ready. “Instead of thinking, ‘This is going to stink’,” says Carter. “You walk into the water thinking, ‘This is going to do great things for me. I’m going to prove to myself I can do something that is challenging, and I’m going to conquer my fear.’” Carter says conquering one’s fears, first thing in the morning, leads one to think about what else they might be

able to achieve the rest of the day. That the group got started during the pandemic was a fortunate irony. “I have four kids and at the time one of them was having a tough time,” Carter says. “He totally latched onto it, and we would get up in the morning at 5:30 or 6 and go down to the lake together and it really changed his life. He got in shape and got better emotionally. All of a sudden he’s training for a marathon.” One value Lake Forest Plungers lives by is that the group remains open to anyone. Aspiring plungers just have to show up Lake Forest Beach. The group posts its schedule on its Instagram page and there’s also plenty of word of mouth. It’s a welcoming bunch. “Whenever a new person comes down, someone kind of takes them under their wing and works with them on mindset and reminds them to put their hands under their armpits so they don’t freeze their fingertips,” Carter says. “We love when new people come. It’s very rewarding to watch people doing it for the first time and see the effect it has on them.” Carter says very few people take the plunge just once. Most come back. And plungers that travel, say, for the holiday, find a local watering hole. It’s a powerful and rewarding routine “Over Thanksgiving our crew traveled. They went all over the country and many people were plunging from wherever they were,” Carter says. “From Southern California to Wisconsin and Minnesota. OSS AND NANCY Friedman don’t just think about their late son, Gregory Paul Friedman, every day. “I think about him every minute,” Ross says. “Every second,” Nancy insists. Time will never heal the Lake Forest couple’s grief, after Greg, 27, died a week after taking a seemingly adulterated dose of the drug Ecstasy (MDMA)/Molly that was provided by a childhood friend at a California concert in 2017. But the Friedmans—a pair of Highland Park High School graduates—and tireless GPF Foundation volunteers and supporters have devoted countless hours to work toward a future where the public and the medical community have the knowledge needed to combat the risks of recreational drugs. “It’s modern-day Russian Roulette,” Nancy Friedman says of the hidden dangers linked to contaminated drugs that can be bought online and delivered to homes. “Back-room chemists are producing and providing these drugs,” Ross Friedman says, adding Greg—who never had suffered from anxiety or depression, or had suicidal thoughts—informed peers and his doctor that he felt like he was “living in a parallel universe with a portal to hell” a few days before his death. A coroner ruled Greg’s death accidental because of circumstances. “Our son,” Ross says, “was suffering detrimental effects from the drug, culminating with a psychotic break one week later.” Some 1,200 people attended a ceremony to honor Greg Friedman at Lake Forest High School, where he was a star football player, having amassed 1,700 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns for the Scouts’ sophomore squad. LFHS varsity football coach Chuck Spagnoli and his staff entered the main gymnasium, site of the ceremony, with the program’s players. Each player wore a Scouts football jersey. “Although some may have heard of Greg, none of them knew him because they all were at least 10 years younger, but that was wonderful to see,” Ross says. “People who did know Greg were shocked at how he died. In disbelief. He was intelligent, athletic, artistic, and healthy, loving life and on top of the world. You’ve heard about right-brain people and left-brain people. Well, Greg was both, but he was incredibly humble.” Shortly after the gathering, friends of the family asked Ross and Nancy to create a foundation in Greg’s name. The GPF Foundation was launched in 2018. Its mission is to save lives by supporting education, appropriate treatment, and overall awareness of the dangers related to recreational drug use. “Our focus on harm reduction education is very different from the ‘Just Say No’ culture of the past,”

“We’re truly making a difference, and Nancy and I are heartened to continually receive extraordinary support from so many friends, volunteers, members of the community, and professionals.” Ross Friedman explains. “We’re realistic and teach young people how to keep themselves and others safe. We’re taking a two-pronged approach—educational and medical—and we’ve received tremendous support from Lake Forest College, Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science and collaboration with our foundation’s medical fellows from NorthShore University HealthSystem and Cook County Hospital, among others. “Handling adverse reactions to MDMA,” he adds, “has been recognized as a blind spot in the medical community.” The Fourth Annual GPF Foundation fundraiser— “An Evening of Exploration”—promises to be an eyeopening event. It will be staged at Northmoor Country Club (820 Edgewood Road, Highland Park) on October 14, beginning at 6 p.m. Tickets can be purchased for $250 per person. The keynote speaker is Dr. John M. Grunsfeld, a former NASA astronaut, a veteran of five Space Shuttle flights, a man dubbed the “Hubble (Telescope) Repairman”, and a 1976 Highland Park High School graduate. Two of his classmates? Ross and Nancy Friedman. One of Greg Friedman’s many passions was space exploration. WGN news anchor Larry Potash will emcee the event, which will include another special virtual appearance by Dan White, “Magician at the NoMad.” “It’s very difficult, because one of the drivers of the foundation was inspired by the loss of our child,” Ross Friedman says. “But we’re making inroads, saving lives. “We’re truly making a difference, and Nancy and I are heartened to continually receive extraordinary support from so many friends, volunteers, members of the community, and professionals.” To learn more and to purchase tickets, visit gpffoundation. org. Please note that Covid safety precautions will include a requirement for all in-person attendees to be both vaccinated and wear masks in a heated, outdoor tent. Participation via live stream will be available for non-vaccinated guests or those wishing to attend virtually. The Covid situation will be monitored, and updates provided. FO REST & BLUFF 35

PUTTIN’ ON THE RITZ

With a $100 million makeover of its five-star suites, guest rooms, and spa complete, The Ritz-Carlton Chicago is reclaiming its place as one of the city’s most luxurious properties. Whether it’s a Valentine’s Day weekend for two or a decadent girlfriend’s getaway, this iconic Gold Coast hotel is the perfect place for your winter staycation. words by Sherry Thomas photography provided by The Ritz-Carlton Chicago

F

With that in mind, we recently checked out the newly renovated Ritz-Carlton Chicago hotel and spa at Water Tower Place—a $100 million makeover that has transformed the 1975 property’s sprawling suites and guest rooms. Let’s just say this isn’t your parents’ Ritz-Chicago. With sleek lines and an identity reimagined by the award-winning, San Francisco-based design firm BAMO, the Mag Mile landmark is living up to the prestigious reputation set by its iconic namesake César Ritz in Paris more than a century ago. Whether you’re booking a romantic weekend retreat for Valentine’s Day or a spa-infused girlfriend’s getaway, consider this your guide to putting on the Ritz in Chicago. EBRUARY MAY be one of the shortest months of the year, but it can also be the cruelest. With endless gray skies and temps that can’t seem to climb above freezing, some “downtown” time may be just what you need to beat the winter blues.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS Step off the elevator at the 12th floor and prepare to be impressed by phase one of BAMO’s transformation—a majestic lobby that pays homage to the city, its architecture, and the hotel’s coveted Mag Mile location. No detail was left untouched in its design, from using

the same Calcutta marble from Water Tower’s façade inside to create towering columns that bring your eye toward the sky to the rows of 19-foot walnut fins that divide the space between the chic, new Torali dining “experience” on the left and a swanky Torali bar to the left. A floating sculpture of hand-blown glass near the ceiling completes the “wow” effect. Evoking the color and movement of Lake Michigan, the Flying Wave piece is a testament to Chicago’s modern architecture and industrial ingenuity. Don’t get too distracted though. The restaurant will come later. Here is where you check in. SUITE LIFE With 434 newly renovated, five-star suites and guest rooms to choose from—some with stunning skyline views—there is no wrong choice. But if the sky’s the limit, treat yourself to one of the new modern luxe Ritz-Chicago suites. (P.S. - If you’ve ever dreamed of having a downtown pied-à-terre, this could be the next-best thing.)

With two bedrooms and 1,500 square feet of living space, the Navy Pier Suite features large picture windows with views of Lake Michigan, Navy Pier, and the Chicago Skyline; expansive living quarters; and two sumptuous marble bathrooms with Asprey bath essentials, including one with a soaking tub. The Lakeside Suite is the next largest with 1,000 square feet and a corner location with panoramic city and lake views. Like the Navy Pier Suite, it features a spacious living area with a wet bar and an intimate dining area. At 850 square feet, the Magnificent Mile Suite features skyline views and two marble bathrooms. The Gold Coast Suite has 800 square feet and one bathroom. Smaller suites include Water Tower Suite (with two luxury

bathrooms) and Executive Suite (with corner views). The guest rooms also feature luxury baths and amenities that make you feel truly pampered. But the true indulgence comes next, after you check in to the new K’Alma luxury spa at the Ritz, where the outside world just melts away.

FIVE-STAR DINING Back on the 12th floor, you have dinner reservations at the Ritz’s new concept Italian steakhouse, Torali, but first we recommend an aperitif at the copper clad Torali Bar. Overlooking the city skyline, Torali offers a modern steakhouse vibe with an Italian touch. Traditional antipasti and handmade pastas are featured along with prime and dry-aged meats. In warmer weather, the restaurant and bar open to a spectacular rooftop deck (which means you’ll need to come back). The menu is decidedly contemporary with an elevated, local take on Italian food. We started with the Truffle Arancini (served with an artichoke bechamel), paired with Torali Caio E Pepe—a delicious pasta course of ucatini noodle, preserved lemon, toasted black pepper, and pecorino Romano cheese. For the entrée, we opted for Roasted Bronzino, served with a parsnip puree, lemons, artichokes, and marinated olives. Add a bottle of Sancerre wine and it ranks among some of the best dining experiences in Chicago (and lived up to memories of dining at Ritz London many years ago). From there, the evening, and the city, is yours. Whether you hit the town or savor your suite in the sky, February may have never felt so fabulous.

K’ALMA SPA Even if you only have time for a day trip, a visit to RitzCarlton Spa Chicago by K’Alma is worth a train ride downtown. Drawing from the culture of Peru and the Q’ero spiritual healers, the K’Alma experts nourish your body with their ancient knowledge and rich healing practices. The intimate spa renews mind and body with four treatment rooms, one couples’ suite, nail suite, sauna, and a steam room. Treatments, including facials and massages, are designed to help you heal and relax. Even an hour-long massage will leave you feeling refreshed and grounded for the year ahead but given that this is a staycation, we suggest you make a day of it. Signature treatments include an 80-minute couples massage with an all-natural blend of essential oils, plant extracts, and other ingredients; a peppermint pedicure paired with a foot and leg massage; and a high-powered facial treatment to tighten and renew the skin. The Ritz Carlton-Chicago is located at Water Tower Place, While you are there, take advantage of the expanded 160 E. Pearson Street, in Chicago. For more information, fitness center and pool. Soon, it will be time for dinner. visit ritzcarlton.com/en/hotels/chicago.

FAMILY MATTERS

It’s all relative to Lake Forest native Brian Dacy, a family man to the core and the co-founder/ CEO of a company, Life Tech, which features a family-centric mission. words by Bill McLean photography by Robin Subar

Brian Dacy at home in Lake Forest

I

T HAS NEVER BEEN difficult for former record-setting Deer Path Middle School wrestler Brian Dacy to pin down exactly what’s allimportant to him. Family, pure and simple. As a son. Or as a sibling. Or as a husband and a father. Or even as the co-founder/CEO of Life Tech, a leading provider of high-tech home respiratory equipment and services. Life Tech’s mission is to offer exceptional service to help patients—in Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, and Wisconsin—improve daily living and maintain independence in the home or community setting. What sets Life Tech apart from other Home Medical Equipment (HME) providers is its focus on pediatric patients who are technology-dependent and require the most complex respiratory care. “We were interested in the pediatric space from the beginning, in part because not a lot of companies in our field put much emphasis on infants and children who need specialized care at home,” says the 40-yearold Dacy, a Lake Forest native who, with his wife, Tecumseh, Michigan, native Ali, and their children ( Jack, 13; Bridget, 11; and Parker, 9) returned to his hometown eight years ago. “We

help the hospital system. We help children return home from the hospital—and keep them at home. “But we do more than see to it that the child is taken care of at home. We truly care about that child’s family, too; at a home environment, with a medically fragile child, every one under that roof is affected.” Family-first, grappling great Dacy, who had amassed the most career wrestling wins in school history when he graduated from DPMS, launched Life Tech in 2009 with his late father, Tim Dacy, a highly successful careerist in the healthcare industry, beginning with his stint at Medline, and a standout football player at Highland Park High School, Arizona State University, and Northern Illinois University, where he served as a Huskies captain. “He was my mentor, my early coach, a larger-thanlife guy, a tremendous athlete, and the primary reason I entered healthcare,” Dacy says, adding his father started an enteral tube feeding company in the 1980s and was the heart behind local hospices and pharmacies and the creative force behind a venture that produced high-tech wheelchairs. “People in Highland Park, even today, after hearing my last name, still perk up and tell me how great of an athlete he was, how great of a person he was. You should have seen him, heard him, as he interacted with others. Everybody who knew my father also loved him.” Everybody who knew Tim Dacy also watched, in awe, as he unflinchingly took on a progressive nervous system disease for more than 10 years. “Fortunately or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it,” Dacy says, “my father was also a Life Tech patient.” Timothy Howard Dacy, husband of his high school sweetheart, Nancy Galassini, and father of three (Brian,

58 FOREST & BLUF F

Kristin, and Andrew), endured an 11-year battle with ALS before dying in January 2019 at age 65. Most ALS patients succumb after two years, Brian Dacy notes. “Not once did my father complain after his diagnosis,” Dacy says. “To not be able to move, while barely being able to talk, at the end of his life, I would have been angry or upset every day. Not my father. My kids and those around him recognized how well he handled the debilitating illness. It was an amazing life lesson he taught all of us—live life to the fullest, every day, no matter your condition. Stay positive and cherish every day.” Life Tech was awarded a Quality Respiratory Care Recognition Seal from the American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC), and, in 2015 and 2021, was presented with the HME Excellence Award and recognized as one of the top three HME providers in the country. “Our 80-plus, hardworking staff members consider themselves extensions of the families they serve,” says Dacy, who insists he’d be nowhere near as successful at Life Tech as he has been without the devotion of Ali, “an amazing wife and mother who does everything to ensure the well-being of our family.” Not one family has left Life Tech. “We strive to do the right thing for all our families,” Dacy says. “If something needs to be addressed in a home, we’ll make it right and do whatever we can to resolve whatever it is that needs attention.” Dacy’s goal, all along, was to call Lake Forest home again after attending Western Michigan University, where he met Ali and majored in Sales and Business Marketing, and earning his MBA in Healthcare Management at Loyola University Chicago’s Quinlan School of Business. “Lake Forest is a phenomenal community, with great schools and access to a beautiful beach, among so many other qualities,” says Dacy, who continued his wrestling career as a four-year varsity Scout at Lake Forest High School, competing in the 103-, 119-, 130-, and 145-pound weight classes; he also played wide receiver and safety for LFHS football teams. “It’s a safe place to live,” he adds, “and everybody in Lake Forest is nice and pleasant.” Dacy was named president of the Lake Forest Lacrosse Association last summer, after serving for two years as one of the association’s board members. He calls the nonprofit “the premier” lacrosse community organization in Illinois. “I never played lacrosse, but it’s an amazing sport, a sport that receives tremendous community support, and it’s a sport my kids love,” says Dacy, who, along with others, has lent his voice to the promising drive to add at least four synthetic-turf playing fields to Deerpath Community Park. “It’s looking good,” he says. “Our community needs the fields. We’re hoping to get Lake Forest’s approval for the fields in 2022, and then maybe make them available for teams and kids, beginning in 2023. It’s a big part of my life, as a father, watching my kids play sports

and supporting them. It’s why, during my free time, I’m probably near a field or in a gym, helping coach or just experiencing the joys that come with being there for them.” Dacy pauses. Another fond memory of his father must have flashed. Must have warmed his heart. “I’m heavily involved with my kids and their athletic pursuits because that’s the way my father was when I was a young athlete,” Dacy says. “That meant so much to me, his presence, at a meet or at a game. He cared. He loved being a father. “Family,” the grateful son continues, “mattered to him more than anything else did.” Visit lifetechcare.com for more information about Life Tech. GOLFER PAR (and Birdie) EXCELLENCE Serial hole-in-one achiever Andrew Vitt of Lake Forest is also driven to succeed as a father, husband, investor, and ageless hockey center. words by Bill McLean photography by Robin Subar

Andrew Vitt on golf course at Exmoor Country Club

ndrew Vitt was 12 and golfing by himself when he carded his first hole-in-one at Exmoor Country Club in Highland Park. Hole No. 8 swallowed the youngster’s tee shot whole. “I was celebrating near the tee box, all while hoping, at the same time, that someone had seen my ball go in,” Vitt, a Kenilworth native, recalls. “As I walked toward the green, I looked around me. Maybe a greenskeeper had witnessed it.” None had, alas. A hole-in-one isn’t official unless another set of eyes views it. Oh, well. At least Vitt didn’t have to buy a round of juice boxes for junior golfers at the club. Vitt, now 39 and a Lake Forest resident, has tasted the thrill of striking four other holes-in-one—each of the official variety—since then, the latest having occurred at Exmoor’s No. 5 in April 2021.

“I got the itch to play golf competitively again about five years after college,” says Vitt, who played at Yale after helping a trio of New Trier High School golf squads (1998-2000) finish runner-up at the Class AA state tournament in his sophomore, junior and senior seasons. “I remember thinking, ‘I need to get better,’ so I put in the time.” But don’t call Vitt a “Weekend Warrior.” He zoomed past that so-so-athlete status right around the time he won his first Exmoor club championship in 2016. Since then? The St. Andrews Capital Group managing partner and father of two—Mackenzie, 8, and Michael, 6, with wife Mary—has successfully defended his championship five times in a row. Call him an “Annual Ace.” The Exmoor record for total club championships won by a male is seven, a mark held by two others. “You always feel, after every round of golf, that you could’ve shot better than you did that day,” Vitt says. “Maybe a shot better, sometimes two shots better. If I

play poorly, I think, ‘There’s always that next round.’ If you have a special round, you think, ‘Why can’t I do that every time?’ “Golf,” he adds, “is a game for optimists. I see a carrot in front of me each time I play. It’s tempting you to catch it. You’re always chasing. It’s what I love about golf, the chasing, the constant aiming to reach a goal that’s right in front of you.” Vitt, who usually tames a course with his steady iron play, didn’t have to look far to find a major golf mentor. His godfather, Joel Hirsch—now an 80-year-old who splits time in Highland Park and in Florida—won a pair of British Senior Amateur championships and was inducted into the Illinois Golf Hall of Fame in 1999. Hirsh still shoots near par and plays 345 rounds of golf, give or take a few, per year. “He’s competitive to the core,” Vitt says. “Phenomenal putter. What I learned from him is that you should never give up when you’re competing. His favorite reminder to me was, ‘The ball doesn’t remember what happened on the last shot, so why should we worry about it?’ ” Vitt still plays competitive hockey, too. A three-time state champion on New Trier Green teams as a winger, he slaps shots mostly as a center these days, either for his Northbrook-based team, Blue Bombers, or in pickup games at the rink at Winter Club of Lake Forest. “Skaters here are competitive but clean, and talented,” Vitt says. “I love it, though I’m not nearly as fast as I used to be, and my shot isn’t all that accurate anymore. But I have a knack for getting to open spaces for opportunities to score. “What I love most about hockey is getting to play with my buddies. I was thinking I might retire at age 40, but then again, who knows? Some guys I’m skating against are older than 50.” The son of John, another golfer, and Sue, Vitt worked for the proprietary firm Darwin Capital from 2006-2018 after his Yale years and met his future wife while playing bags in Wrigleyville one day. Their first date was dinner at Rosebud Steakhouse in the city. “It took me the longest time to get her phone number,” Vitt says of Mary, a sales manager for Chicago-based Schindler Elevators & Escalators. “But I got it, we dated, and my marriage proposal was low-key—we were on a couch, watching TV, probably a Seinfeld rerun. She’s lovingly honest, hardworking, and a fantastic mother.” Vitt, meanwhile, enjoys fatherhood—“I get to take my son, who’s gone from tee-ball to underhand pitch, to baseball games,” he says—life as a Lake Forest denizen, and his workdays for St. Andrews Capital Group. “Trading is a lot like golf … a different challenge every day,” he says. “Win or lose, whatever happens in golf or at work, it’s on you, and only you. Some people like to blame exterior factors for tough days at work or on a golf course, but I’d rather not waste the energy on excuses. There’s a scoreboard at work and another one in golf, tallies that can be improved with better preparation and execution. “I like that, because I’m always striving to improve on and off the course.”

PLASTIC SURGERY UPDATE TUMMY TUCK

words by Steven Bloch, M.D.

O

ne of the most frequent requests that I get is for a “Tummy Tuck.” Many patients find that despite diet and exercise they cannot achieve the shaped, toned, flat abdomen they desire. In assessing a patient for a “Tummy Tuck” multiple factors are taken into account. 1. What is the status of the overlying skin and the degree of laxity? Is the laxity confined to the lower or upper part of the abdomen or both? 2. What is the status of the underlying muscles? Do they meet in the midline or are they separated from pregnancies or intra-abdominal fat? 3. What is the distribution of excess fat? Is it diffuse or localized in the lower upper abdomen? Does it extend to the flanks?

1. Non-invasive CoolSculpting or CoolTone. 2. Minimally invasive BodyTite or Renuvion for skin tightening. 3. Vaser liposuction for fat reduction. 4. Modified abdominoplasty for the lower abdomen. 5. Full abdominoplasty combining liposuction, repositioning umbilicus, skin tightening, and underlying muscle repair. The above procedures can often be combined to give you a customized operation to achieve the results you desire.

For additional information, visit bodybybloch.com or Dr. Bloch can be reached at his Highland Park office at 847-432-0840. Follow us on social media: BodyByBloch

Depending upon the above assessment a customized operation can be performed to address these concerns. Multiple procedures or techniques can be employed.

The procedures vary from non-invasive to full abdominoplasty or some combination. Methods include:
