Thank you! truly! In this season of gratitude, I feel so blessed to be working in a career that I am passionate about every day. I am deeply thankful for wonderful clients of all ages and backgrounds for entrusting me with their home sales and purchases. And I am grateful for my colleagues and professional relationships developed over two decades. As a dual state agent, my work takes me from Lake Forest to Lake Geneva, and beyond. Thus far in 2021, my over 20 million dollars in closed sales* for my clients have spanned from historic homes to newer construction, lakefront estates to cozy cottages, suburban houses to country retreats, in-town investments to horse farms.
Every one of my buyers and sellers had a distinct dream - and it was my privilege to work hard on making those dreams come true for them. This fall has brought with it two more very special listings, a historic Howard Van Doren Shaw home on 1.3 acres in East Lake Forest, and coming soon, an Orren Pickell home in Mettawa on a very private 4 acres.

THE BUZZ
CHRISTMAS CHEER Two North Shore residents cook up a Christmas treat that solves the headache of having to water that fresh Christmas tree. words by Mitch Hurst photography by Robin Subar
I
T’S A GREAT DAY OUT, piling the kids in the car, heading off to the Christmas tree farm, and chopping down just the right tree your home. Put the lights and ornaments on and you’re ready for the season to begin. All smiles. Then mom or dad asks, “Who’s going to water this thing?” Silence. Turns out, there is a solution for that. The friendship between Daniel Muñoz and Peter Hoagland goes way back. Both with marketing backgrounds, the two made a habit of meeting for coffee on Sundays to bounce product ideas off each other. One day, about four years ago, Muñoz, a resident of Lake Forest, called up his friend and said he had an idea he wanted to share with him, and that they should have lunch. Hoagland, from Lake Bluff, readily agreed. At lunch, Muñoz took out of piece of blank paper and sketched out his idea, a device that could automatically water a freshly cut tree, eliminating the hassle of having to crawl under the tree—and over the presents—to keep it watered and alive. “I came in and talked with Peter because something that happens in most homes like mine is they bring the tree in the house and my wife usually starts watering it and then after two or three days she starts asking who else is going to do it,” Muñoz says. “It basically becomes an argument in the household.” So, Muñoz went online to see if there was a product that could solve the problem, something that he could just plug it in and be done with it. He found that there were a few options, but most were prone to causing a minor flood. His creative juices started flowing. “I designed something on a piece of paper, very crude. When I showed it to Peter that Sunday I had filed for a provisional patent,” he says. “When Peter and I talked about it we said, ‘Hey, let’s do some market research to see if this really has legs.’” The idea was tested with about 100 consumers and the results were extremely positive. The two entrepreneurs were off and running. But bringing a product to market doesn’t happen overnight. “Basically, what you end up having to do is three things. You have to raise money to get the product and project up and running, then you have to find a manufacturer who can make the product,” Hoagland says. “Then, you have to actually do a little bit of research on product naming and trademarking.” Hoagland says they remained in a “concept state” for the first year-and-a-half, during which they landed on a name for the product—HoHoHoH2O—and a design for its packaging and outer box for retail. Initial funding was provided by friends and family. The product has been commercially available for two years, and
Daniel Muñoz and Peter Hoagland
HoHoHoH2O is going into its third selling season. They built a Website (HoHoHoH2O.com) that includes a video demonstrating how the product works. It’s the top selling product of its kind on Amazon, and judging by reviews, customer satisfaction is through the roof. Central to the product’s success is it’s packaged to look like a Christmas present, so it blends in with its surroundings. “The components of the system are you have a sensor to a pump and a computer directly in the box that looks like a present,” says Muñoz. “The sensor is on the end of a tube in the tree stand attached to the trunk with a Velcro strip. You plug the unit into an electrical outlet, you fill the tank with water, and you turn it on. That’s it.” Muñoz and Hoagland run HoHoHoH2O with a personal touch. Against the advice of many of his friends, Muñoz lists his mobile phone number on the product website, and often fields calls from satisfied customers offering thanks for providing a solution to a lifelong challenge. One satisfied customer of HoHoHoH2O is David Gorter, the owner of Sidney’s Services in Lake Bluff and a resident of Lake Forest. Gorter says the product has led him back to having real trees come Christmastime. “The thing I like is its simplicity, but it really did solve a problem. We had actually moved away from going to the garden store for a tree and were using an artificial tree just because of the hassle,” Gorter says. “We’ve been using it for two or three years now and it’s a relief. The tree is getting water on a regular basis and doesn’t dry out as fast.” Gorter says he likes the product so much he’s probably given half-a-dozen away to friends and family, and it’s taught him a bit about the life of a tree. “I’ve been stunned by how much water a tree will drink,” he says. “I don’t recall filling the base of the tree up with as much water as I do the HoHoHoH2O container. No wonder our trees had been dying.” For more information, visit HoHoHoH2O.com, or search for the product on Amazon.

TEAM WORK Food bank leadership family grows words by Tricia Despres
A
S THE WORLD continues to find its way back financially and emotionally from a pandemic, Northern Illinois Food Bank continues to do its work to ensure that everyone in this state has the food they need to thrive. And they now have added four new leaders to help with its most precious of missions. Former Mondelez International Financial Executive David Brearton, CogniTek CEO/CTO and MG Fuels Founder/CEO Michael Gurin, IDEO Executive Director Justin Massa, and YouTech Founder and CEO Wilbur You recently joined the distinguished board of directors at the 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization that serves our neighbors in 13 counties with 250,000 meals a day. “We’re excited to welcome David, Justin, Michael, and Wilbur into the Food Bank Family.” said Julie Yurko, President and CEO of Northern Illinois Food Bank. “Their incredible energy and insights into growing successful businesses will be invaluable for the Food Bank as we begin executing our new strategic plan. We look forward to their leadership and knowledge.” And while their professional backgrounds may vary, all four executives find themselves personally invested in the food bank, perhaps now more than ever before. For example, Mr. Bearton is a Lake Forest resident and longtime donor of the Food Bank. Mr. Gurin regularly volunteers at the Food Bank’s Mobile Markets in Highwood and lives in Glenview with his wife, Shelley. And while Mr. Massa once called New Orleans home, he now resides in Chicago and has worked as a consultant with Northern Illinois Food Bank’s My Pantry Express program since 2020. Rounding out the new team of leaders is Mr. You, a resident of Naperville and a major player in the support of the Food Bank’s direct-to-neighbor marketing strategy. Each Northern Illinois Food Bank board member serves four-year terms and provide strategic counsel on the Food Bank’s mission and other directives to the Food Bank’s Executive Team. These recent additions to the Northern Illinois Food Bank board will certainly assist in the continuation of food dona-

tions and funding from some of the state’s most well-known manufacturers, local and corporate grocers, area farmers, corporations, foundations, and individuals who donate food and funding. Even so, their work is far from done. Every week, the Northern Illinois Food Bank works with nearly 1,000 volunteers to help them evaluate, repack, and distribute food. With distribution centers located in Geneva, Park City, Rockford and Joliet, the Northern Illinois Food Bank also proudly partners with more than 900 food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, and youth and senior feeding programs to provide nutritious food and resources. And the need in communities across Northern Illinois isn’t going away anytime soon. In fact, Ms. Yurko believes that it might take two full years ‘before the demand for food assistance returns to our pre-pandemic levels.’ FO REST & BLUFF 33

We are collecting pop tabs at our Lake Forest Office: 675 Forest Ave, Lake Forest, Il 60045 Or would be happy to pick up from your home or office. The idea behind the Ronald McDonald House is simple: provide a “home-away-from-home” for families of seriously ill children who are receiving treatment at nearby hospitals. Some children need to travel great distances to get the medical attention they need. For the families of these children, accommodations can be hard to come by; options are often limited to costly hotels or unforgiving hospital chairs and benches. The Ronald McDonald House provides a comfortable, supportive alternative for these families. It serves as a temporary residence near the medical facility where family members can sleep, eat, relax and find support from other families in similar situations.

GIVING WARMTH
Lake Forest High School junior Joshua Dueringer continues his family’s tradition of collecting coats near the holidays for Mothers Trust. words by Ann Marie Scheidler photography by Robin Subar wardrobe provided by Smith’s Mens Store
W
Lake Forest High School junior Joshua Dueringer
The coat drive spearheaded is an important outreach for Mothers Trust. Each year, Mothers Trust spreads the word through their network that the event is taking place. “In 2020, with all of the Covid restrictions, we weren’t sure if the coat drive could even happen,” says Dueringer’s mother, Alyson. “But we had more coats than we’d ever had before because so many people had been cleaning out their closets during quarantine. We absolutely needed to distribute them. So, we pivoted our plan to a drive through.” Held on a cold November morning from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the parking lot of Foss Park Community Center, 298 cars came through the line for coats. “It was really amazing how it all came together,” Alyson says. “Each person was allowed to choose one coat and one accessory—a hat, gloves, or boots depending on what we had left—when they came through the line. We weren’t sure at all how it was going to work, but it did and we had nothing left when the morning was over.” Almost from the moment the 2020 coat drive ended, the planning for 2021 began with Josh at the helm. “Sometimes it’s hard to get people to want to collect coats, but that hasn’t been the case at all this year,” he says. “People really want to help.” At press time, collection boxes have been strategically placed throughout the community. “We empty the boxes regularly to make room for more coats,” says Josh. “We just store them in our living room until the coat drive takes place. It’s pretty funny how full it gets.” The coat drive team also hits the local thrift and second-hand stores to purchase any coats that are in good condition. They use money donated to the coat drive to buy these coats, in addition to funding from a sponsorship they received this year from Northern Trust Bank. The greatest need is for children’s coats. “It’s crazy to me that this is where we always run short on,” Alyson adds. “But if people are looking to make a donation, new or gently used children’s coats in all sizes are so appreciated.” With a year of the drive-through coat drive under his belt, Josh looks forward to this year’s November 13 event. “It’s really incredible to see how happy these coats make the families that come to this event.”
HEN JOSH DUERINGER’S sister Ashley was a freshman at Lake Forest High School, Mothers Trust needed volunteers to help collecting coats for its annual coat drive. When she was a sophomore, they asked her to run it. When Ashley graduated, her younger sister Samantha took over the project. And when she left for college, she turned the reigns over to her younger brother Josh. “It’s our ninth year collecting coats for Mothers Trust,” says Josh, who doesn’t seem the least bit daunted by the task ahead of him. “I’ve kind of always been a part of it in some way and I really enjoy all of it. We collect thousands of coats for hundreds of families. I’m looking forward to helping give them away this year on November 13.” Mothers Trust was founded in 1998 by Lake Forest’s Barbara Monsor. Monsor founded Mothers Trust after witnessing firsthand how a seemingly small amount of assistance can change a child’s life. Her idea was simple—to connect people in desperate situations with those who want to provide assistance where it will truly make a difference. At its core, Mothers Trust Foundation fills in financial gaps for children from birth to age 21, in turn providing hope, building confidence, and making a positive difference in young people’s lives. “We are very good stewards of the money we receive,” says Executive Director Paula Turelli. “We take the trust people have in us very seriously.” To this end, each Wednesday morning at 9:30 a.m., a group of Mothers Trust volunteers gather on a Zoom call to review grant requests and vote on whether or not a grant should be made. Grant requests are submitted to Mothers Trust by social workers and school counselors throughout Lake County on behalf of the children they’re representing. Grant requests range from something as small as eyeglass frames to something as significant as money to cover health care costs. THE VALUE OF INPERSON LEARNING Reading Power kicks off oneto-one learning. words by Theresa DeMaria

fter more than a year of virtual and hybrid tutoring, Reading Power kicked off its 19th program year in person. “The smiles, laughter and connections made in person are invaluable,” Lisa Bulzoni, Executive Director of Programs and Operations commented During the pandemic, due to school closures and the barrier of low engagement in virtual learning, the literacy needs of at-risk students rapidly grew in numbers. Students are now even further behind. Low-income minority families were hit the hardest both economically and socially by COVID 19. The inability to read proficiently leads to a lifetime of devastating results and statistics show that two-thirds of children who cannot read well by the end of third grade will likely end up in welfare or even jail. More than 80 percent of the incarcerated population consists of high school dropouts.
Reading Power is doing its part to make a difference. Oneto-one reading support has proven to be a catalyst towards acceleration in learning to read. This nonprofit organization provides young children the intervention they need at a cost of approximately $2000 per student each year. Located in Lake County since 2003, Reading Power has provided literacy tutoring to over 4,100 children in prekindergarten through second grade in the areas of North Chicago, Waukegan, and Zion. This nonprofit organization has more than 250 professionally trained volunteer tutors who make a lifetime of difference. Reading Power is always in need of volunteers to provide one-to-one tutoring for children, helping them accelerate their literacy gains, develop confidence, and embrace a love of reading and writing that lasts a lifetime. WEALTH MANAGEMENT
BOUTIQUE APPROACH
When it comes to wealth management, Steven Esposito of Morgan Stanley brings more than three decades of experience and a track record for curating custom portfolios for his clients. words by Sherry Thomas
I
F STEVEN ESPOSITO has learned anything in his more than 37 years of managing high net worth portfolios, it’s to never panic. Esposito started in the wealth management business in 1983 and has experienced five market crashes and now, a pandemic. “It’s never boring,” he says. The one piece of advice he shares with his clients is that wealth management is not about finding the next hot stock. Rather, it’s about risk management. “An investor can never eliminate risk; they can only mitigate it,” explains Esposito, Executive Director, Senior Portfolio Management Director, and Wealth Advisor for Morgan Stanley. “If your family wealth is properly allocated, market turbulence is an opportunity and not a crisis.” The Lake Forest Group at Morgan Stanley brings a boutique approach to wealth management—one that assists long-time customers with everything from estate planning strategies and portfolio management to retirement planning, trusts, and philanthropy. Esposito knows from experience that portfolios continually evolve as the years progress. “I remember a long time ago, a very wealthy client said to me: ‘I’m already rich; don’t make me poor’,” he says. “I never forgot that comment and it’s a cornerstone of what we do at the Lake Forest Group. We have had two severe stock market crashes in the last 11 years, and if investors haven’t learned how to properly balance their assets in that time, they never will.” Esposito and his team pride themselves on a very personal, boutique approach. “We don’t do cookie cutter portfolios, or create portfolios via a software program,” he says. “Every portfolio is managed independently and uniquely, along with some good old fashioned wealth management—all while benefiting from the global financial resources of Morgan Stanley. It’s the best of both worlds.” Esposito’s advice has been sought out by major media organizations, including WGN TV and radio; WBBM’s “Noon Business Hour”; WIND radio; Fox News; ABC-7 News; CBS News; NBC News; the Chicago Tribune; Chicago Sun-Times; and Crain’s Chicago Business. The Lake Forest Group has approximately 175 households under their management as of April 15, 2021, the vast majority who have worked with Esposito for 12 years or more—including some who’ve
been with him for more than 30 years. It’s no wonder then that he has made Forbes magazine’s “Best in State” wealth manager’s award every year he entered. “It’s a very personal operation here in downtown Lake Forest. We emphasize personal attention, number one. I’m like the family CFO in addition to the asset management, we discuss the trusts, wills, etcetera. You have to review everything,” says Esposito. “Morgan Stanley is one of the premier global managers on the planet right now and the resources of this firm are incredible.” Navigating financial markets has become more complex than ever and last year’s pandemic threw in a wild card that no one could have seen coming. “That’s when you need a seasoned veteran on your side. I’ve learned from nearly four decades of experience—not from a textbook or TV— when to deploy capital. Deploying capital at the scariest moments and liquidating during market euphoria is the most difficult thing to get people to do,” he explains. “My responsibility as a wealth manager is to protect your family’s wealth first. We do our best to calculate our client’s risk tolerance—along with their needs, desires, and investment goals for their families and future generations.” Esposito’s minimum account size is $1.5 million. The Lake Forest Group at Morgan Stanley is located at 207 E. Westminster Avenue, Suite 300, in Lake Forest. For more information, call 847-604- 7321 or email steven.esposito@morganstanley.com. IS GRATITUDE MAKING YOU MISERABLE?
words by T-Ann Pierce illustration by Tom Bachtell
I
T MIGHT NOT BE evident the moment we first meet and the subtleties may seem less evident the further you get to know me, but here is a fun fact: I went to charm school. My parents, with optimism and hope in their hearts, enrolled me in charm school. This wasn’t the makings of a Hollywood movie, mind you. I was not a beret-wearing, forlorn t’ween, resting alongside stacks of Louis Vuitton steamer trunks, aboard an ocean liner en route to Swiss finishing school. No. I attended charm school Tuesday nights at Montgomery Ward in the Randhurst Mall. Yes, Wendy Ward Charm School was a real thing. And yes, any shred of charm that eeks its way out of my soul, I owe to Wendy Ward. My Wendy Ward charm instructor had wellcoiffed, pageant-mom hair. Her hair fascinated me with its majestic heights and gravity-defying hold. It isn’t polite to stare, mouth agape, and touch a lady’s Lego-like hairdo; I learned that in Wendy Ward Charm School. Wendy Ward Charm School’s handbook was loaded with helpful tips on how to flatter boys so they would feel ‘manly’ and how to learn to love foods that made you pretty. There was an entire chapter entitled, Your Legs And You. I must have been absent the day my classmates mastered the art of what to do with their legs. I’m well into my fifties and I don’t think I’ve spent one minute of one day using my legs in any Wendy Ward approved manner. You know how people know where they were when Kennedy was shot? I can tell you exactly where I was when I made the very personal decision to not paint my fingernails. My Wendy Ward instructor informed us that young girls were to buff their fingernails only, no polish until we were older. I remember sitting on that great big, 70’s salon chair, spinning myself around like a top, thinking to myself, ‘Cool. How ‘bout I play it safe and just never paint my fingernails for the rest
of my natural life?’ To this day, I do not paint my nails because, well, Wendy Ward. God knows my Wendy Ward instructor tried, but some lessons in charm don’t translate well into real life. Much to my parents’ chagrin, much to everyone’s chagrin really, no amount of charm school instruction could stop me from picking my wedgies, even in public, even as a grown woman. For me, etiquette and good manners cease at the precise moment I develop a wedgie. I simply will not endure a wedgie. Ever. Black tie affair? Don’t care. An audience with the queen? Don’t. Care. If you should witness me uptown struggling to remove a wedgie, please avert your eyes. Your horrified grimace will not shame me into minding my manners; I’ll only wave to you with my free hand. ‘You get what you pay for,’ my husband likes to remind my father. My point is this: good enough is very, very good, indeed. Unless you are a brain surgeon or brow expert, please stop striving for perfection. It is dreadfully boring for the rest of us and it is probably not very fun for your family. Every holiday season, I scroll through social media looking at breathtaking photos of exquisitely decorated homes, jaw-dropping parties, elaborately wrapped gifts, festive front doors, gourmet meals, and I think to myself, ‘I sure hope that woman has a sturdy bench in her shower ‘cause I bet she spends alotta time in there crying.’ This holiday season, remember your good enough is all anyone wants or needs. For more information or to be in touch check out T-Ann’s websites: t-annpierce.com and theconfidencetriangle.com. She’s on Insta @tannpiercecoaching and @the.confidence. triangle. If you attended Wendy Ward, please DM T-Ann immediately and tell her what you’ve been doing with your legs all these years. FO REST & BLUFF 41

ENTERTAINING A Thanksgiving cocktail needs to be three things: soothing, easy to prepare, and based on an American spirit—in this case, rye whiskey. This no-shaking-required classic (considered by some to be America’s first cocktail) gets its spiced kick from the rye and its trademark complexity from the absinthe rinse and Peychaud’s bitters. recipe by Fletcher & Fork
Sazerac Peychaud’s bitters are brighter and lighter than Angostura bitters, with hints of clove, orange, candied cherry, and anise. They are an essential ingredient for this cocktail. Serves one • • • • •
1 teaspoon absinthe, for rinsing the glass 1 sugar cube 3 dashes Peychaud’s bitters 2 ounces rye whiskey 1 strip lemon peel
1. Chill a rocks glass by filling it with ice. 2. Remove the ice and pour in absinthe, swirling to coat the glass. Discard any excess. Set glass aside. 3. Add the sugar cube to a mixing glass, splash bitters over the sugar cube, and muddle together until it is completely crushed. 4. Add rye whiskey to the mixing glass then fill it with ice, stirring until combined and well-chilled. 5. Strain into the absinthe-rinsed glass. 6. Twist the lemon peel over the cocktail to release the oils. Discard the peel or place it on the rim of the glass as a garnish.

ATE AUTUMN’S floral bounty is notable for both texture and palette. The subdued hues, softness, and blowsy nature of seasonal wheats and grasses seen here provide great contrast to the vibrant cherry brandy roses and orange hybrid ranunculus. Magnolia leaves do autumnal double duty with their glossy green tops and matte brown bottoms. Pumpkin orange rose hips give a final flourish, punctuating with diminutive dots in this perfect-for-the-holiday-table arrangement. AKING RECIPES usually frown on softer apples, specifying instead that you use Granny Smith. But this fragrantly spiced, fabulously flavored and pleasingly textured cake makes beautiful use of varieties such as Roma, Cortland, or MacIntosh which have tender flesh. This is also good with apples that you’ve had in a bowl on the counter for a while. The apples partially “melt” right into the cake as it bakes. For an autumnal flourish, I’ve paired this cake with maple-brown-sugar frosting which has a caramel flavor that goes supremely well with the apples and spice in the cake. Stacked, the layers make a towering apple amazement— homey indulgence of the best sort. Note: For best release, I line the cake pans with well-greased parchment—sides AND bottoms. Ingredients: • 1 1/2 cups unsalted butter (three sticks) • 3 cups granulated pure-cane sugar • 6 eggs • 3 cups all-purpose flour • 1 cup whole-wheat pastry flour • 2 tsp baking powder • 2 tsp baking soda • 2 tsp ground cinnamon • 1/2 of a freshly grated nutmeg (or 1 tsp ground nutmeg) • 1 tsp ground cloves • 1 tsp salt • 1 cup room-temperature buttermilk • 6 to 8 McIntosh apples (or a mixture of softer-textured apples of any variety) peeled and diced to make 6 cups • Parchment paper for lining baking pans • Solid vegetable shortening for greasing pans Maple Brown Sugar Icing: • 1 1/2 sticks (3/4 cups) unsalted butter • 1 1/2 cups lightly-packed brown sugar • 1/4 to 1/2 tsp salt (to your taste) • 3/4 cup pure maple syrup • 1/2 cup half-and-half • 2 tsp vanilla extract
• 4 to 4 1/2 cups powdered sugar, sifted Make cake: 1. Peel, core and medium dice enough apples to make 6 cups. Set aside. 2. In the bowl of a large stand mixer, whip butter with sugar for five minutes. Beat eggs in one at a time until mixture is light-colored, volumized and fluffy. In a separate bowl, sift together remaining dry ingredients (flours, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and salt). Alternating with the buttermilk, beat 1/3 of dry ingredients followed by 1/3 of buttermilk into the butter/sugar mixture, until all are incorporated. Stir in the diced apples. Set oven rack to center position. Preheat oven to 350. 3. Generously grease three 9-inch baking pans with solid vegetable shortening. Using a Sharpie, trace a circle around the bottom of baking pans onto parchment paper. Cut out three circles and use the trim to cut enough straight strips to line the sides of each pan. Fit circles into the bottom of each pan and press the strips around the sides. To help the strips fit the slight angle of the sides of each pan, I cut inch long snips along the length of each strip; the shortening you’ve greased the pans with will help the parchment to stick. Fill each pan with equal amount of batter. Bake at 350 for 50 minutes or until tops of cakes spring back when lightly pressed and a toothpick comes out without any trace of unbaked batter. Remove cakes from oven. Cool on racks. Make frosting: In a medium-sized heavy saucepan, over medium low heat melt butter. Add brown sugar and maple syrup stir for 2 minutes. Stir in salt. Add half-and-half and whisk until boiling. Remove from heat. Stir in vanilla. Sift in powdered sugar, whisking to incorporate until smooth and creamy. Assemble cake immediately after making frosting while icing is still hot and pourable (it sets up very quickly!) Place first layer on serving platter pour maple frosting over the surface, allowing some of the frosting to drip down the sides. Quickly repeat this process with the remaining two layers. Decoratively top cake with a few wedges of apple, if desired.

HERE IS A QUESTION that Dr. Lori Halvorson routinely asks her patients at Lake Forest Hearing Professionals, a question that often takes both men and women by surprise, a question that is far more important than it may sound on the surface. “I ask them if they brush their teeth every day,” chuckles Dr. Halvorson, CEO of Lake Forest Hearing Professionals and a leader in hearing and brain wellness. “It sounds like a simple question, but we want to make hearing screenings as routine as dental checkups. You go to the dentist every year, but they don’t get their hearing checked. We need to educate the people in the medical community to see the value in that and take action.” And she has done just that for over thirty years, having become one of the country’s most renowned authorities on all things auditory, from well-fit hearing aids to brain retraining to groundbreaking research into the connection between the brain and hearing. “Helen Keller once said, ‘vision connects us to things, but hearing connects us to people,” recalls Dr. Halvorson. “Once I read that quote, it really sealed the deal for me. I wanted to make audiology my life mission.” And like any accomplished visionary, Dr. Halvorson has long known that there has been much to be learned in a field that quite frankly doesn’t get the attention it deserves. “It’s not just about the act of hearing,” says Dr. Halvorson. “It’s about the fact that when we let our hearing get damaged, the end result is dementia and that’s not acceptable.” Indeed, in recent years, an increasing number of studies have pointed to the idea that hearing loss and dementia go hand in hand, and that even a mild hearing loss will double one’s risk for dementia. “We hear with our brain,” explains Dr. Halvorson, who opened Lake Forest Hearing Professionals 15 years ago, essentially creating a boutique hearing experience for her patients via offices in Lake Forest, Northfield, and Lincoln Park. “So, I start really doing a lot of research on the brain. And now, so does the rest of the world.” Today, we have come to find out that one-third of dementia cases could be prevented, simply by modifying one’s life, sometimes ever so slightly. It is these revelations that make up the backbone of Sounhaus.
“Sounhaus is my passion and is there to provide a comprehensive health approach for preservation of hearing,” explains Dr. Halvorson of the movement she worked on with a group of distinguished researchers at the University of Michigan Medical School. “The university owns the patent on a nutraceutical called Soundbites. This nutraceutical helps rescue the cell when it gets in trouble before the hearing loss occurs. We are all born with 31,000 hearing neurons and we need all of them. It’s like playing the piano with missing keys. The keys that are still there have to work harder.” Certainly, this means that hearing health must be made a priority, not just when one experiences hearing loss, but long before that. “Pediatricians stress to their patients the importance of wearing your bike helmet and brushing your teeth every day, but the idea of hearing doesn’t get too much attention,” says Dr. Halvorson, noting that a recent CDC study shows that one of every six teenagers today have some sort of hearing loss. “We want to educate people, from a very early age, on why they should preserve their hearing and not let external high-risk environments cause further damage.” Not surprisingly, Dr. Halvorson says that one of the most highrisk environments involves headphones in your ears for too long and at too loud a volume. “We need to change the model of audiology,” she says. “To wait until there’s damage and you have to get a hearing aid is quite frankly too late. We must start educating and encouraging daily preventative care and yearly screenings.” Dr. Halvorson says that she knows that sharing this sort of information with the world is going to be a tough climb. So instead, she takes it one step…and one patient, at a time. “We talk to our patients in Lake Forest, who take the facts to their family and friends on the North Shore, who share it with their friends in Chicago and across the state and around the country and so on and so on,” Dr. Halvorson says with a smile. “I’ve invested much time and passion into this, and I will do so until everyone realizes that they truly are in control of their future.” Lake Forest Hearing Professionals is located at 225 E. Deerpath Road, Suite 223, in Lake Forest; at 400 N. Central Avenue, Suite 100, in Northfield; and at 1731 N. Marcey Street, Suite 530, in Chicago. Lake Forest native Molly Curley sparkles at the helm of Barbara Parker Fine Jewelry. words by Ann Marie Scheidler photography by Razzaq Lodhia
W
HEN MOLLY CURLEY was studying jewelry making at the University of Kansas, her parents may have questioned her once or twice about what she planned to with that degree. “My dad always used to say when we were younger that if you do something you love, you’ll never work a day in your life,” says Curley, the fourth of five children and a School of St. Mary and Lake Forest High School graduate. “I think I made him a little nervous when I pursued jewelry design, but when he saw that I was very serious, both of my parents supported me 100 percent.” In fact, jewelry-making may have been something Curley was pre-destined to do, as her path took her to align creatively with her mother’s college sorority sister, Barbara Parker. “Barb worked for her husband’s family’s business—Sidney Garber—for more than 35 years,” Curley says. “When we were younger, we used to visit the store to see the windows she designed for the holidays, and then we’d go somewhere fun for lunch. It was an annual treat that we’d always look forward to.” Then seven years ago, Parker decided it was time to venture out on her own and launch a fine jewelry business. And
having watched Curley study jewelry manufacturing in Seoul, Korea and intern for some of Chicago’s best jewelers, she knew exactly who she wanted at her side. “It’s funny because Barb’s offer went something like this,” Curley says. “I can’t pay you and I can’t pay me, but here’s the concept for the brand. We’re going to take things people are no longer wearing and redesign them. Barb believed in helping people see the value in pieces they just had lying around.” Curley loved the idea and made the jump. And before long, she was taking meetings all over Europe where many of Barbara Parker’s original pieces are made. “Barb trusted my background and knew that I really understood what goes into making beautiful, long-lasting pieces of jewelry,” Curley says. As the business grew through referrals and word-ofmouth, Parker fought a private battle with ovarian cancer. “Barb was the strongest person I ever knew,” Curley says. “She just kept going and always had time for me.” But just this last May, Parker lost her fight. Before she passed away, she and Curley had the chance to discuss the future of Barbara Parker Fine Jewelry and how the brand might continue. “There are certain elements that were really important to
“Barb was the strongest person I ever knew.”

“Barb taught me how important it is to know the people you’re working with ... understanding a client’s lifestyle helps me envision what a piece of jewelry should look like.”
Pansy necklace, 18kt gold with center diamond
Custom and redesign work is really what differentiates Barbara Parker in a crowded market. Curley recently had a client present her with a diamond necklace that she had owned for years. “I decided the necklace needed to be a little more chunky, and a little less traditional,” she explains. “It’s not an everyday diamond necklace, but it’s definitely now a necklace that she can wear every day. By adding more modern elements, the necklace is now easier to wear.” Even though Curley’s personal aesthetic tends to be more bohemian, redesigning traditional jewelry pieces comes easy. “Barb taught me how important it is to know the people you’re working with,” she says. “Understanding a client’s lifestyle helps me envision what a piece of jewelry should look like.” Curley will be hosting the annual Barbara Parker Fine Jewelry trunk show at the Deer Path Inn near the holidays (no date was set at press time). She’s looking forward to shoppers seeing some of her newer pieces, including a pansy interpreted in an ombre sapphire. “Barb used to say that ‘jewelry is the bonus points of life,’” Curely adds. “And to always be honest—it’s not about selling. She may be gone, but her legacy most definitely lives on in all of the timeless jewelry she created.”
Barb,” she says. “We have a buckle ring that is one of our signature pieces, and she asked that I keep it as part of our line. When she passed, she left her buckle ring to me. This will always be part of what we offer.” As will the pansy motif. Pansies are very symbolic of the Tri Delta sorority, something Curley’s childhood home was filled with both inside and out. The pansy will always represent what brought Parker and Curley together. “Barb’s big thing was value,” Curley adds. “Personal relationships and value. I don’t even like to use the word ‘client’ because the people I work with are so much more like family. In the jewelry business, which is such an industry of families, you’re often part of people’s big moments. Many of my friends are getting married, and to be able to help them design their engagement and wedding bands is so special. It’s heartwarming and a big responsibility to create something that’s going to be kept in a family and handed down To learn more about Barbara Parker Fine Jewelry, visit barbaraparkerfinejewelry.com. for generations.” 76 FOREST & BLUF F

VERY SEASON IS THE perfect season to spend time at the beloved Deer Path Inn. From the moment visitors step into the Inn, they’ll feel like they’ve escaped to the English countryside. Styled after a 15th century English manor house, the Deer Path Inn opened as a hotel in Lake Forest in 1929. The Inn is a respite for Chicago city dwellers, out of towners, and Anglophiles alike. Known for its traditional Afternoon Tea service, developed in partnership with a Master of Tea from England, its exceptional dining and cocktail offerings across three restaurants, from elevated European cuisine and traditional white glove service in The English Room to traditional bangers and mash in The White Hart Pub and creative cocktails and Chicago’s best sushi in The Bar, and spacious accommodations, Deer Path Inn has survived a fire, been added to the National Register of Historic Places, and welcomed famous faces over the past century including the late Carol Burnett. While filming the 1978 movie The Wedding, Burnett changed the future of sleeping accommodations at the Inn when she declared the mattresses were “far too soft” for her liking. After testing six other mattresses on site, Burnett took a trip to Sears and purchased three mattresses, two of which she donated to the Inn and one that she and her assistant hauled to her guestroom so Burnett could ensure a good night’s sleep.
acters of Jeeves and Wooster, Wodehouse was renowned for his witty prose and plots revolving around coHoliday medic errors. cocktail In true Wodehouse-style, the Deer Path Inn remains committed to exceeding its guests’ expectations while promising to never takes itself too seriously. Personalized guest services are always top of mind from the moment guests step onto the hotel property, with the staff fully prepared to welcome hotel guests by name. This small detail sets the tone for a special stay to come. While the Inn is known for its sophisticated atmosphere and world-class service, it embodies Wodehouse’s comedic sensibility and style too. Playful, whimsical touches abound at the Inn including a legendary practice of guests trying to locate the Inn’s beloved rubber duck, Winston, who hides like Elf on the Shelf throughout the spectacular property.
Whimsical and Wonderful Chief Spirits Officer Jorge Centeno embraces Wodehouse revelry in nearly all of his creative cocktail creations, but aesthetics isn’t everything to Centeno. The Inn’s curated cocktails are as delicious as they are delightful, but Centeno wants guests to know that their drinks were crafted with intention and not just thrown together for the “wow” factor or for a social media photo opportunity. However, Centeno says that if guests feel drawn to photograph and post a photo of one of his creative libations, he considers that a bonus. Sensibility and Style…with a sense of humor Centeno’s holiday cocktail menu this year is a veritable P.G. Wodehouse was one of the great British comedic writers of the 20th century. beloved Snowfall and the indulgent Adult Red Velvet Hot Cocoa. The Snowfall is reminiscent of a tres leches cake and garnished with fragrant, fresh rosemary and plump, sugared cranberries. On chilly, winter nights, Ceneno hopes guest might relax by the fire with an Adult Red Velvet Hot Cocoa, an extravagant and adults-only take on the timeless childhood classic. One of Centeno’s finest whimsical cocktails, the Krispy Kocktail, is sure to delight diners and guests with its playful, nostalgic take on an iconic breakfast cereal. Made with Roku gin and Rice Krispies, Centeno’s masterpiece is served out of a mini-Rice Krispies cereal box. It’s impossible to not marvel at this aesthetics of this drink and, of course, capture Centeno’s artistry in a photo destined for social media. Whimsy and light-heartedness aren’t limited to picture-perfect cocktails or enthusiastic searches for Winston the duck. According to Inn regulars, staff member Catonious Nathan embodies and radiates kindness, positivity and the biggest dose of light-hearted humor. During the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak and subsequent quarantine, Nate took to the Inn’s Instagram page to upload a weekly dancing series in the hopes of cheering up local residents and patrons of the Inn. Quickly, Nate’s dance moves and conviviality became such an appreciated hit that while he was running personal errands in town recently, a patron stopped and asked for a selfie with Nate, proving how cherished the Inn has become to the community of Lake Bluff and Lake Forest. Interested in learning how to create whimsical cocktails of your own? Inn guests can book a two-hour private mixology lesson with Centeno to learn how to make their own innovative drinks. Mixology lessons can be fully customized based on the guests’ spirit/flavor preferences. Get Lost in Lake Forest and Enjoy the Holiday Season at Deer Path Inn This holiday season, guests who stay at the Deer Path Inn can channel their inner Kevin McAllister (Home Alone) and celebrate the holidays by getting “Lost in Lake Forest.” The new Lost in Lake Forest Suite Experience, which is available exclusively through the inn’s Cornwall Suite, between 11/26/2021 and 1/2/2022, includes a pair of Deer Path Inn robes to take home, an in-room screening of Home Alone, a gift box of specialty treats from Sweet’s of Lake Forest, gift cards for holiday shopping at the Lake Forest Bookstore and other local boutiques, an elevated twist on nostalgic childhood snacks served in-room including gourmet popcorn and boozy milkshakes, and complimentary roundtrip transpiration via Range Rover to experience the Chicago Botanic Garden’s Lightscape annual event; an after-dark, illuminated trail filled with installations from captivating Chicago-based artists and international artists.

The Bar is considered one of the most popular gathering spots for locals, The Bar’s gold-hued bar room offers a sophisticated yet relaxed ambiance. The menu features a mix of shareable items, sandwiches, large plates and fresh, hand-rolled sushi. While accolades and top-ten lists are appreciated and celebrated, it is the community of Lake Forest and Lake Bluff that filled the Inn with friendship, festivity, and a welcoming environment where there’s a little something for everyone. “While we’re well-known for our world-class service and award-winning food and beverage offerings, our greatest accomplishment is becoming an integral part of the local community in Lake Forest,” says Patrick Lacassagne, general manager and innkeeper at Deer Path Inn. “For more than 90 years, we have been an adored destination for locals, whether coming to spend quality time with family and friends or meeting a colleague for lunch – and every day, we look forward to welcoming out-of-town travelers to experience that same, unique sense of community that we all feel on a daily basis.”
A Top Dining Destination The Deer Path Inn accommodates all tastes and preferences with three dining options, The English Room, the White Hart Pub, and The Bar. In addition, cocktail service is available in the Hearth Room, an extension of the lobby, with all restaurants led by Executive Chef Brad Parsons. FINDING FAMILY Community members help Lake Forest resident Cynthia Holck discover her roots. words by Erika Carey photography by Robin Subar
L
AKE FOREST RESIDENT Cynthia Holck was a child when she announced to her family that she was interested in finding out about her “real parents.” She recalls that her adopted family appeared surprised and disappointed. “My sister said to me, ‘How could you do that?’ And that stuck with me.” Holck didn’t want to trouble her family, but she was curious about her roots. “I always had a sense that I was different from my adopted family. I loved them, of course, and they loved me, but on some level, I felt like I didn’t belong.” Holck conducted informal searches as an adult, but the state of Illinois was restrictive about the release of information from adoption records, providing only general non-identifying information such as age, marital status, occupation and general physical descriptions. Holck was frustrated with the numerous obstacles she faced every time she searched. When she originally contacted the orphanage where she was placed as a newborn, St. Vincent’s Orphanage, now run by Catholic Charities of Illinois, Holck was told many records had been destroyed in a fire. “The agency was able to provide me with some details about my birth parents including their ages and they confirmed the period of time that I spent in the orphanage, but that was about it,” says Holck. Disenchanted by so many dead ends, Holck buried her dream for many years. Then Holck met with Lake Bluff resident and psychotherapist Donna Oldenburg of Envision Therapy. “One of my close friends was dying of cancer, and I wanted to know how to be with her, how to support her through treatment as a caregiving friend. Donna was extremely helpful to me and we worked together for a while,” Holck says. After her friend passed away, Holck wanted to continue working with Oldenburg regarding the unresolved feelings she was experiencing as an adoptee who hadn’t successfully located her birth mother. “I was interested in my medical history, in my birth parents’ backgrounds, but what I really wanted, more than anything, was a photo of my mother.” Oldenburg, an adoptive mom of two daughters, remembers feeling compelled to help Holck. “I had to do something, but I wasn’t sure what I could do. Searching for someone’s birth parents is not my work, but I knew that Cynthia’s pursuit would be fraught with emotion. There are a lot of feelings adoptees experience including loss and grief. I wanted to support Cynthia as she navigated the feelings of a potential discovery of her birth mother, but I also wanted to find a way to assist in her search,” says Oldenburg. With Holck’s permission, Oldenburg turned to the Lake Forest Lake
Bluff community via a Facebook services page. Within hours, Oldenburg received numerous tips, suggestions, and advice from dozens of residents. “I couldn’t believe how many people responded and offered to help. It was heartwarming and it absolutely reinforced what I love about this community,” Oldenburg says. Laura Brinckerhoff of Lake Forest was one of the first replies that Oldenburg received. Brinckerhoff has been interested and active in genealogy research for decades. An avid reader with adept research skills, Brinckerhoff was able to immediately locate copies of records and family information for Holck. “It was a fairly easy search,” Brinckerhoff says, who also located photographs of what she hoped were Holck’s relatives. She immediately contacted Oldenburg. “I think I found her family,” she wrote. Although both of Holck’s parents were deceased, Brinckerhoff discovered two potential biological sisters, which she assumed would be half-sisters. “I was bursting with excitement when Laura told me she thought she found Cynthia’s family. I looked at the photographs and immediately noticed a resemblance. And I remember thinking, ‘this feels real,’” says Oldenburg, who checked in with Holck to share the news. “In just a few days, I had documents, photos and information about my birth parents and my potential sisters,” says Holck, who was elated at the discovery. “My birth mother and father had two children before they married. Both of us were adopted through St. Vincent’s, but I was surprised to learn that they went on to have four children.” Holck located and reached out via letter to a biological brother and enclosed a copy of her original birth certificate, which Brinkerhoff had located. Catholic Charities offered to contact Holck’s other biological sister on her behalf. Holck hoped someone would respond to her quickly, but she worried that her letter might not be received well. “I considered that my biological family was probably unaware of any of this. I didn’t want to disrupt anyone’s life so I made it clear in my outreach letter that I was mainly interested in seeing photos of my parents and learning about any medical history that might be important. Most of all, I hoped someone would just respond to me.” Marybeth Hall of Santa Fe, New Mexico received Cynthia’s letter and birth certificate from her older brother. “He didn’t know what to do with the information, so he sent it to me.” When Marybeth looked at the birth certificate, she instantly recognized her mother’s signature. Hall immediately contacted Holck and Catholic FO REST & BLUFF 85

Charities, and she re-registered her Ancestry.com account, which had been deactivated for more than a decade. Soon, Holck and Hall were communicating regularly. “We hit if off immediately,” Hall says. “Quickly, we agreed that we should work together to locate our other sister.” Within a week of reaching out to Catholic Charities, both Holck and Hall located Beth Coniglio of Des Plaines. Coniglio knew she was adopted at a young age. “I remember bragging in front of my first-grade class that I was adopted. My teacher pulled me aside later and warned me never to tell anyone I was adopted.” This memory impacted Coniglio, who associated shame with her adoption for years. “My whole personality…my whole life was affected,” she says. And yet, Coniglio remained curious about where she came from. “I yearned for any information at all. It bothered me a little bit that I didn’t know anything.” Like her soon-to-be-discovered sisters, Coniglio had dabbled in family research over the years, but she had given up, assuming she might have to hire private investigators to help her. “I thought about what I would do if I found my birth mother or biological family and I didn’t want to disrupt anyone’s life. I figured these people had their own lives, marriages, children and family histories, what could I do?” Then a letter arrived from Catholic Charities. Hall worked with a case worker at the agency to connect first with Hall and then Holck. Soon the sisters were sharing photos and stories. “My high school graduation photo looks so much like my father’s photo,” says Coniglio, who was relieved to finally find family. “The whole idea of ‘where did I come from?’ just flew out the window. I felt so much relief…more than relief actually. I felt joy. There was a real joy for me in this discovery and reunion.” “I always wondered if there was someone out there like me,” says Holck, who arranged to meet Coniglio for dinner. “I sat across from her and got lost looking at her beautiful smile and realizing I was face-to-face with my sister.” “I noticed a similarity between Cynthia and me immediately,” says Coniglio. “It felt wonderful.”
All three sisters plan to get together in person when it is safe to do so. In the meantime, they maintain regular contact with each other via phone and e-mail. “I never imagined this search would proceed as it did. It exceeded all my expectations,” says Oldenburg, who credits Brinckerhoff and the Forest Bluff communities for helping Holck so quickly and bringing her a lot of joy. Both Holck and Coniglio feel that they have a stronger sense of who they are and how they fit into the world. “I don’t feel like a part of me is missing anymore,” says Holck. “I felt like a part of me was missing before I discovered my two sisters. I feel whole now. I feel like my life dream has come true.” My big thing throughout this whole journey has been moments where I wonder whether I’m doing the right thing. I struggled with feelings about reaching out and notifying potential relatives. I wondered if I ever should have done any of this,” she says, “The process is emotional, and you have to be prepared to understand the people you are contacting might not be receptive. It can be complicated. And unnerving.” -Cythnia Holck, Lake Forest “The strength of our community enabled me to help Cynthia find her birth family. I’m so grateful.” -Donna Oldenburg “Adoption often marks the joyous beginning of a new family embarking on a rich journey together. Adoption often marks an ending, as well, and the separation of children from their parents and families of origin. Even in the most ideal circumstances where some level of ongoing contact continues with extended family members, adoption-related issues will likely arise at different points in the lives of people who were adopted and their birth or adoptive parents. A willingness to learn about these issues and seek support, if necessary, can help ensure that parents and those who were adopted experience happy and healthy family lives.” -Children’s Bureau (www.childwelfare.gov)

GET IT DONE
As the real estate market heated up last year, Roni Nanini’s motto—Let’s Get It Done—continues to help clients achieve their real estate dreams. words by Mitch Hurst
Roni Nanini
T
HE HOT REAL ESTATE market that started last year is still presenting challenges for both buyers and sellers. Roni Nanini, a broker with @properties in Lake Forest, continues to help clients meet the challenges presented by the unprecedented real estate activity on the North Shore. Nanini, a multi-million-dollar seller year after year. knows the local community and can provide the best service and the soundest advice. That’s why clients in Lake Forest turn to her to sell their homes or find homes to buy. “The market heated up so fast last year that people really needed a broker who could keep pace with what was happening,” Nanini says. “Having an experienced broker rooted in the community was more important than ever.” In a fast market, clients are prone to making rash decisions. Having a broker who stays calm and cool—and positive—can help clients act more rationally. “People always say they don’t know where I get my energy, but I have an upbeat attitude about life,” she says. “I guess I’ve always taken on that ‘friend’ role with my clients. I want them to always feel like they can come to me with any questions they might have, no matter what it is.” Nanini takes her job personally, which often leads to longterm friendship with her clients. She’s also a master networker, so she knows and keeps a list of the local plumbers, carpenters, painters, and others who can help homeowners once they move in. When you hire Nanini, you get access to her rolodex, too. “I love matching people with a service or experience that is right for them. I love making people’s lives easier and that all comes together in real estate,” she says. “If you need something, I can refer you to the best. It’s my job to make someone’s move as comfortable as possible, to be able to give them a person to call for a recommendation.” Part of the reason people are comfortable calling for recommendations is they know she’s going to suggest what’s best for them. She’s not trying to sell them anything. It’s all about credibility. Nanini was born and raised in Highland Park and is cur-
rently raising her family in Lake Forest, providing her a significant edge when serving clients looking to move to the North Shore. “To live in the area where you sell gives you so many connections that someone new to the area isn’t going to have,” says Nanini. “Buyers coming from the city especially appreciate my knowledge of each community on the North Shore and how I can match a community to their specific needs. Nanini offers the strong commitment to getting her clients results, enjoying the ride along the way. “I love what I do, and I love making my clients happy in this area that I get to call home,” she says. Roni Nanini is with @properties in Lake Forest. You can reach her directly by calling 847-712-0118 or emailing roninanini@ atproperties.com.

PLASTIC SURGERY UPDATE TUMMY TUCK words by Steven Bloch, M.D.
O
ne of the most frequent requests that I get is for a “Tummy Tuck.” Many patients find that despite diet and exercise they cannot achieve the shaped, toned, flat abdomen they desire.
In assessing a patient for a “Tummy Tuck” multiple factors are taken into account. 1. What is the status of the overlying skin and the degree of laxity? Is the laxity confined to the lower or upper part of the abdomen or both? 2. What is the status of the underlying muscles? Do they meet in the midline or are they separated from pregnancies or intra-abdominal fat? 3. What is the distribution of excess fat? Is it diffuse or localized in the lower upper abdomen? Does it extend to the flanks? Depending upon the above assessment a customized operation can be performed to address these concerns. Multiple procedures or techniques can be employed. The procedures vary from non-invasive to full abdominoplasty or some combination. Methods include: 1. Non-invasive CoolSculpting or CoolTone. 2. Minimally invasive BodyTite or Renuvion for skin tightening. 3. Vaser liposuction for fat reduction. 4. Modified abdominoplasty for the lower abdomen. 5. Full abdominoplasty combining liposuction, repositioning umbilicus, skin tightening, and underlying muscle repair. The above procedures can often be combined to give you a customized operation to achieve the results you desire.

S THE HOLIDAY season approaches, many dream of that one lavish gift that might await them. And often amongst one’s most extravagant dreams is a small token of love, wrapped up in an iconic Tiffany Blue box. However, this year, there is a new, ultra-decadent option for gift giving from the famed jewelry house. As part of an exclusive collaboration with New York-based contemporary artist Daniel Arsham, Tiffany & Co. has created the Bronze Eroded Tiffany Blue Box. The exclusive series includes 49 eroded bronze sculptures studded with jagged gold crystals and featuring a new hue Arsham calls ‘Tiffany Green.’ Held carefully inside the work of art is a limited-edition Tiffany x Arsham Studio Knot bracelet in 18k white gold with diamonds and tsavorites inside the box. It’s nothing short of breathtaking. “Tiffany Blue is so recognizable, but I wanted to use it in a different way than it was originally intended,” Arsham explained in a statement. “My work
imagines a contemporary object as if we’ve transported it to the future and brought the object back. And this time dislocation creates a sort of paradox in the object itself. You have this thing that you know from your current era, but it looks old.” The Bronze Eroded Tiffany Blue Box is just another chapter in the distinguished history of Tiffany & Co., which long has captured the hearts of jewelry enthusiasts everywhere, along with today’s biggest stars. Earlier this year, breakthrough entertainer Anya Taylor-Joy hit the award show circuit not only drenched in nominations for her role in The Queen’s Gambit, but also drenched in Tiffany & Co. diamonds. Tracee Ellis Ross, nominee for Best Actress in a Comedy for Black-ish, also let Tiffany & Co. diamonds add to her sparkle during award show season, donning everything from Tiffany earrings in 18k yellow gold and diamonds to a Tiffany & Co. Schlumberger® Cooper bracelet in platinum and 18k yellow gold with diamonds. For more information, please visit tiffany.com.
