COUNTRY VS. TOWN
Mantra? Presence over perfection. On your reading stack? I am in a book club with an amazing group of friends. It has introduced me to a variety of great books. This month we are reading a new Kristin Hannah novel, The Women. My personal favorite is A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles. “A life well lived is not measured by the length of time, but by the depth of experiences.” What organizations do you support? The past few years I’ve volunteered on Madison Elementary School’s PTO Executive Board. It’s been a wonderful opportunity to support our amazing schools, students, and educators. We also actively support The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and The Community House. Hinsdale has no shortage of people with giving hearts, it is very inspiring. What’s your signature entertaining style? We love hosting dinner parties for family and friends. My husband and I are a great team. He’s the chef (his homemade pappardelle and short rib ragu is legendary) and I put the champagne on ice. What has surprised you about living in this area? While not surprised, I’m perpetually impressed with how kind, generous and thoughtful the people of our community are. I’m blessed to call so many of these amazing people friends. Any daily rituals that make you feel centered? My day always starts with a long walk with the dog. The fresh air, exercise, and a few moments to myself help center me before the craziness of the morning takes over. If my schedule allows, I’ll also try squeeze in a class at Core Power yoga. The classes are great and it’s always nice to catch up with a few friends. Music you love? All music! Most recently, a friend took me to see the Zach Bryan Band for my birthday. The band is so talented, it was amazing to see them live. A few of my other favorites are Chris Stapleton, Taylor Swift, The Rolling Stones, and Whitney Houston. My boys and their carpool friends have also introduced me to a wide variety of new music. The jury is still out on most of their recommendations though. Favorite summer traditions? The 4th of July in Hinsdale is the best! When we first moved here, we started a little bike parade for the kids on the block. It has since become a tradition that has grown to include friends and families from all over town. I love watching the kids say the Pledge of Allegiance before taking off around the block on their bikes decked out in red, white, and blue. What advice would you give to your younger self? “The days are long, but the years are short.” Enjoy and live in the moment.
WHEN IN TOWN WHEN IN THE COUNTRY
What’s your go-to outfit? A simple T-shirt, jeans, and sneakers. Where is your favorite place to walk? Katherine Legge Park, Waterfall Glen, and Morton Arboretum are all local favorites. Is there anything you can’t leave the house without? My phone. I use Apple Pay for everything! Where do they know you by name? If you ever need to find us on a Friday night, try Giuliano’s Pizza. They make us feel like family and are one of the many small, locally owned businesses that make Hinsdale special. Cafe La Fortuna is my got-to for coffee. Angela is always so welcoming! Do you have a favorite memory of living in the area? Favorite festival or special event? With two boys, I spend a lot time at various sporting events. Some of my favorite memories of living in Hinsdale are the weekends spent at the park, watching my boys play sports. Followed by a trip with friends to Everyday’s A Sundae for ice cream. If an ad agency asked you to write a commercial for your town, what would you say? A neighbor once told me that they moved to Hinsdale because every house had kids playing in the yard, a basketball hoop and an American flag. I’m not sure if I could describe it any better.
Do you wear any outfits or accessories that like too much day to day but is perfect for the city? When we do get out in the city, my style is elevated and classic yet still practical. I always add a spritz of perfume that I found in Paris. What is your favorite walking route? I love to run on the lakefront. Lake Michigan is what truly sets Chicago apart from other cities. What’s in your bag? Phone, keys, lip gloss and sunglasses. I stick to the staples. View that never gets old? Lake Shore Drive. The juxtaposition of the city skyline to the lake never disappoints. Best quick bite or hidden gem? Club Lucky in Bucktown is a perennial favorite. Their classic Italian cuisine and exquisite martinis never disappoint. Le Bouchon is the closest you can get to an authentic French Bistro outside of Paris. Do you have a favorite museum? My mom and I have always enjoyed The Art Institute. We’re looking forward to the new Georgia O’Keeffe exhibit. The architectural boat tour is also a staple for our out-oftown guests. Learning about Chicago’s history through its buildings is fascinating. What is your favorite show or movie set in Chicago? We’ve currently loving the new series The Bear. It’s fun to see some of Chicago’s best restaurants and chefs featured on the show.

MARIE RUNYAN
was raised in a close and loving family in Downers Grove. Living in Hinsdale keeps her near to her parents, who are now the most devoted Mimi and Papa to her two children, and just down the road from her sister. That is especially lucky as the two are best friends.
She met her husband, Adam, at Creighton University. Shortly after graduating, the couple moved to Southern California, where Marie worked for several years as an ICU nurse before founding a concierge nursing business.
“I enjoyed the opportunity to make deep connections with my clients while providing high-level, personalized nursing care,” she says.
West Coast life included learning to surf, taking their two boys to the beach, exploring tide pools, catching gorgeous sunsets, and being outside every day. However, once their oldest son neared school age, they decided to move back to the Midwest so the boys could grow up near both families.
“We love raising our boys in Hinsdale. This town is a wonderful, tight-knit community. I love that our kids can walk home from school, meet friends at the park, or ride their bikes downtown for ice cream. When we take family walks to town, it is common to run into friends along the way. These connections are what make Hinsdale our home.”
Marie recently helped launch Rush Concierge Medicine in downtown Hinsdale. This practice provides patients with the highest level of personalized care, tailored to their individual needs.
She is also a passionate traveler. “ I love Hinsdale, but Paris has my heart. Adam and I go every spring and enjoy walking the city and picnicking along the Seine with a bottle of wine and a baguette,” Marie says.

SURGERY IN THE SUMMER?
Surgery, whether medical or cosmetic, is often a significant event in one’s life. While factors like personal health, type of surgery, and post-operative care play important roles, there’s a misconception that the time of year might affect recovery outcomes. Let’s dive into this myth and uncover the realities behind surgery recovery, regardless of the season.
Reveal the Truth: The notion that the time of year significantly impacts surgery recovery
is a common misconception. While it’s true that weather conditions and seasonal activities can influence daily life or activities, they don’t have a direct correlation with surgical outcomes. Recovery timelines and success rates are primarily determined by medical factors such as the complexity of the procedure, the patient’s overall health, and adherence to post-operative instructions.
Medical Factors Trump the Season: Your body’s ability to heal and recover from surgery is largely influenced by internal
factors rather than what season it may be. Factors such as age, preexisting medical conditions, and immune system play crucial roles in determining the pace and success of recovery. Surgeons consider these factors when assessing a patient’s candidacy for surgery and developing personalized recovery plans.
Myth Debunked: While the time of year may seem like an important factor in surgery recovery, its not a factor. Medical factors such as the type of surgery, overall health, and post-operative care practices have far greater significance in determining recovery outcomes. It is true that the sun will keep scars more red if not covered, but although it may be colder in the winter, the sun is always present. Scars can be covered with sunscreen all year round and most of the time, elective scars are well hidden and covered anyway. So if summer is the right time for you to take some time and recover, then get it done!

Swinging Summer
into
For more than 50 years Salt Creek Club in Hinsdale has been providing summer sports programs and recreation for generations of families looking to stay active during the warm months.
WORDS BY MITCH HURST
Here in the frozen tundra of the Midwest, we have to pack all the outdoor activities into summer because we know it won’t be long before winter will be whispering in our ears.
In Hinsdale, Salt Creek Club has been providing opportunities for decades for extended families—grandparents, parents, kids—to get their splash on or take a few swings on the tennis or pickleball court. And not just that. Salt Creek members of all ages can hone their tennis or swimming skills by taking lessons from experienced pros and participating in tournaments and meets that get the competitive juices flowing.
Hinsdale resident Betsy Keefe joined Salt Creek with her parents in 2000 and her family and kids joined in 2019. Her four kids have participated in swim and tennis programs, while her and her husband stay active in the paddle programs. What she enjoys most about Salt Creek is the family and community atmosphere.
“When we joined in 2000 the staff was young and welcoming and lovely and passionate, and 95 percent of staff still works there today,” Keefe says. “It’s like a very family feel, open at the crack of dawn so lots of kids can spend their entire day there during summer.”
“They are really trying to make it a club where you can spend your summers and make tons of memories.”
The club has also seen some renovations the past five to ten years that has allows it to host more adult events, such as social and cocktail hours. It now features a large rooftop deck where Keefe hosted her engagement party and birthday parties for her kids.
“It has a really pretty view, and they also have another larger rental space called the Creek Room that is used frequently,” she says. “You can dress it up for fancy events or keep it more casual.”
Another aspect of the club Keefe appreciates is that there are members from all over the West Suburbs, not just Hinsdale, so she’s been fortunate to meet other families that she probably otherwise wouldn’t.
“A lot of the families that my husband and I are friends with don’t even play tennis, so there’s a bit more of a casual vibe for the younger families and lot of happy hours,” says Keefe. “They are really trying to make it a club where you can spend your summers and make tons of memories.”
Alex Hershman is Vice President of the Salt Creek Board of Directors, and he says what motivated him to volunteer his time is the fact that Salt Creek “holds an irreplaceable spot in his childhood memories,” and now that he’s an adult it allows him to create new memories with his own family and also new friendships.
“Back in the 90s, when my family first became part of the Salt Creek community, it marked the beginning of unforgettable summers, Hershman says. “From tennis drills with friends—whom I’m
fortunate to still share the court with after 25 years—to afternoons at the pool, followed by games of running bases and wiffle ball until my mom said it was time to head home.”
Now, the roles have reversed, and his own children eagerly await their swimming lessons, getting popsicles at the grill, and taking tennis lessons of their own.
“It’s a privilege to play a part in shaping the future of Salt Creek, ensuring that they, along with countless other families, can have lasting memories of the club,” says Hershman. “Additionally, my dad had held the same role 20 years prior, and I believe that makes us the first family to have a father and son as Vice President and then President. Who knows, maybe one of my children will make it three generations in another 30 years.”
Hershman remains heavily involved in planning Salt Creek’s signature event, the Bring-A-Ringer, which has become a highlight towards the end of each summer. What began as a member/ guest event has transformed into an impressive tournament, drawing some of the most talented young players, from top-ranked NCAA athletes to ATP-rated pros.
“While it attracts top-tier players, it remains open to all members, ensuring that everyone can participate and enjoy the festivities. The round-robin format guarantees a fun time for everyone, both on the court and off, with parties before and after adding to the excitement,” he says. “It’s an event that embodies
the spirit of Salt Creek—bringing people together, regardless of skill level, for a shared love of tennis and a good time.”
Former Salt Creek Board President Jeff Woolley joined Salt Creek as a member more than three decades ago in 1987. He says the beauty of the club is a focus on family and the family vibe it provides. He also appreciates the club’s more casual atmosphere as opposed to a traditional country club.
“With that comes stitching a community together and involve-
ment with friends and guests you may know from the community,” Woolley says. “We don’t have a normal kitchen and dining area. We have a canteen, and that makes it casual and comfortable.”
Sounds like the perfect place to beat the summer heat in Hinsdale.

Hinsdale Junior Woman’s Club turns up the heat for the party of the summer
WORDS BY MICHELLE CROWE

There’s something special about a summer party. With the sun setting late and the delightful scent of flowers filling the air, a warm weather gathering is relaxed and all about the vibes. Hinsdale Junior Woman’s Club (HJWC) is kicking off their 75th year with a Santorini, Greece themed summer soiree that promises new friendships and core memories.
HJWC was founded in 1949 with the mission to enrich the community, the lives of the members and their families. The club made an immediate impact, hosting a Spring Fashion Show and Tea the first year, which raised $800 to purchase an obstetrical table for Hinsdale Hospital. This kind of substantial result, where the community can see the good their donations contribute to the world have likely been key to the continued success of the group.
Seven-and-a-half decades in, generations of local women have found purpose in the impactful philanthropy of HJWC. Over the past few years, during which large numbers of young, vibrant families have moved to the area from Chicago or elsewhere, the club has provided a soft landing for women looking to make both friends and a difference.
Through committee work, service projects for Wellness
House, and family events like December’s Jingle Dash, members and their families have many opportunities to lift up the community and find their people.
Each year HJWC provides an average of 20 grants valued between $1-$50,000 to organizations serving women and children. Grant money is awarded to organizations who have needs for items and projects that can be used for many years to come. Vans, playgrounds, building maintenance needs, and equipment are just a small example of the items given. This Grant Fundraising model was launched in 2018. Since then, their tireless efforts have raised $1.4 million dollars for non-profit organizations in Chicago and the Western Suburbs.
In an impressive confluence of humanity, HJWC granted $15,000 to the IWS Family Health Center to purchase a new dental chair. This gift was much appreciated and celebrated by members of the Infant Welfare Society of Chicago Auxiliary. Generosity is contagious.
All in, HJWC raised over $301,000 during the 202324 year, which concluded in May. “We’re very pleased to have worked hard and raised funds for many incredible organizations. Our 74th year was strong and next year will be even better,” says Lauren Markham, President of HJWC.
Fresh off this fantastic year, it would be understandable for members to take a well-earned break, but there’s no rest for the givers in this dynamic organization.
Instead, a group of hosts is planning an epic kick-off to their diamond anniversary year. Rosita Kraja will host, turning her already-glorious pool area into a garden of the Greek Gods. “What a dream to host everyone’s favorite summer party here and support the good work of Hinsdale Junior
Woman’s Club,” she says.
The atmosphere will channel the island’s famous beach vibes and incredible sunsets, setting the scene for an especially beautiful evening. There will be glorious food, a signature drink, photo opportunities, and special auction items.
Summer Party tickets are available, and all are welcome. For women who are new to the area and an excuse to dress up, to spend time with HJWC with thoughts of joining, or both, this is a wonderful opportunity to call a sitter and head out on the town. “We couldn’t be any more excited for this party and the coming year. Membership applications and ticket sales are open, join the fun,” says Markham.
Tickets available at hjwc,us.

ISLAND RUSH
The Thrill of St. Barth
WORDS BY ROBIN SUBAR
PHOTOGRAPHY BY ROBIN SUBAR AND LE CARL GUSTAF
As our tiny aircraft descends over the vibrant turquoise of the Caribbean and rugged coastline, a group of young scantily clad female travelers seated nearly in the cockpit squeal with delight. This will be no ordinary landing. Thankfully, I’ve been forewarned that we are approaching one of the shortest runways in the world. Suddenly, the narrow strip of tarmac appears as my sweaty palms clench the armrests even tighter, while the pilot skillfully navigates the landing right before the runway ends at the water’s edge. “I’m so proud of you!” exclaims one of the girls to our pilot. I let out such a heavy sigh of relief that this unusual compliment barely registers with me, and I feel pride in making the decision to skip the ferry from St. Martin in lieu of experiencing this 10-minute adventure.
As we wind through the steep, verdant hills on our journey to Le Carl Gustaf, our French chauffeur regales us with tales of the hotel’s illustrious reputation for offering the best sunsets on the island and its enviable location just steps to the chic town of Gustavia. The fivestar hilltop hotel offers panoramic views of the marina, making it

the pinnacle of luxury in St. Barth. Pulling up to the property feels like stepping into a postcard, with a grand staircase greeting us like a welcoming committee. It’s a mahogany masterpiece of modern and traditional Caribbean architectural design, with lush tropical foliage adorning the landing. On the ascent, we catch glimpses of the glistening harbor dotted with bobbing yachts. The air is laced with the intoxicating scent of frangipani, mingling with an aura of casual opulence that makes even the most seasoned traveler feel like royalty. Laurie, our hostess extraordinaire, greets us warmly and personally, setting the stage for the high-touch service that awaits us. Perched at a cozy high-top overlooking the marina, we’re handed two glasses of crisp Veuve, a gesture
that feels like a luxurious hug after our adrenaline-fueled arrival.
This hotel, once the playground of 1980s glitterati, has been revamped and reimagined by the trendy Le Barriere Group, transforming it into a haven of French Colonial charm with a dash of Caribbean flair. Gilles & Boissier, the design wizards behind this makeover, have sprinkled their magic dust over the hotel’s 21 rooms ranging from bungalows, suites, and villas to a beautiful private home. The hotel also features the Diane Barrière Spa, Beefbar, and Shellona, a lively, upmarket restaurant on St. Barth’s iconic Shell Beach.
With spirits lifted, we eagerly anticipate further adventures as Laurie guides us to our bungalow, Saint Jean 310. Its creamy tones, rich wood, and smooth stone blend seamlessly with vibrant lime greens and sunny yellows framing the crimson clay rooftops against the sapphire harbor backdrop.
A chilled bottle of Charles Heidsieck, accompanied by decadent chocolate treats, awaits us on the coffee table, along with a heartfelt welcome note. We look forward to watching the sunset from our plunge pool on the spacious private terrace, surrounded by palms and tropical flora. With amenities like an outdoor shower and yellow and white striped loungers, we’re tempted to never leave. The bold green floral headboard overlooks a pillow paradise of seven different types, while the luxuriously appointed state-of-the art marble bathroom boasts a celestial rainfall shower. And let’s not forget the scrupulously curated minibar stocked with top-shelf beverages like Clase Azul tequila, Michel Cluizel chocolates, and a Nespresso machine.
JOURNEYS
Our escapade continues with lunch reservations at one of the island’s hottest spots, Shellona. The electrifying pulse of DJ beats envelops us as we approach this Mediterranean chic meets Caribbean charm beachfront haven. We are greeted with smiles and French accents and informed our sunbeds are on reserve whenever we are ready. Perhaps a signature cocktail like the kiwi infused Kiminth while embarking on a tantalizing journey into Shellona’s menu? The Feta Au Filo Sesame Noir Et Miel is served. Imagine a delicate parcel of golden filo pastry, carefully wrapped around a creamy center of tangy feta cheese, drizzled with golden honey. As we take our first bite, the crisp exterior gives way to a velvety interior, where the richness of the cheese mingles with the flakiness of the pastry. Our waiter suggests the Tacos Croustillant. We choose the mahi and tuna golden-brown taco shells, fried to crispy perfection. The Carpaccio de Poisson St. Barth Style Zesty citrus marinade adds a burst of freshness, while hints of tropical
fruits and fragrant herbs dance on our palate. Our meal would not have been complete without Shellona’s giant orb signature dessert, Bougatsa!

MADE IN SPAIN
At Coa, in the lower level of the Drake Oak Brook, Chef Ezequiel Dominguez is serving up tapas that blur the lines between Old World Spanish traditions and New World Latin American flavors.
Normally, when preparing for a new restaurant opening, I return to my dusty treasure trove of tasting notes from reviews past. I speed read through old Microsoft Word documents and try to decipher old chicken-scratch musings that I scribbled on printer paper and fraying reporter’s notebooks. The goal? Reacquaint
DINNER DATE
myself with a chef’s oeuvre and revisit brilliant interpretations of dishes I might encounter once again.
But I decided to defy my usual routine prior to visiting Coa, the new Spanish/ Latin-themed restaurant inside The Drake Oak Brook. My excuse? I’d just returned from a trip to Spain, where I “researched” as many tapas, pintxos, pans of paellas and Spanish vermouths as my liver could handle. I’d assumed this would be the most responsible way to prepare for Chef Ezequiel Dominguez’s expansive new menu at Coa.
Only Dominguez, crafty kitchen vet that he is, totally outflanked me. I could have gorged my way across the entire Iberian Peninsula and would have been unlikely to find tapas anything like the ones he’s serving at Coa. That’s because Dominguez, who made a name for himself at the now departed Café Iberico, isn’t trying to churn out a Cafe Ba-Ba-Reeba clone. He’s more interested in trying to embed and imbue Latin America flavors into a classic line up of Spanish tapas.
Take, for instance, one of Spain’s most beloved potato platters: patatas bravas, which are to tapas bars what French fries are to American hamburger joints. In most cases, cube-shaped potatoes are crisped in olive oil and paired with two different sauces: a sweet paprika-accented tomato sauce and a creamy aioli.
At Coa, Dominguez folds his potatoes into a brothier brava sauce flickered with dried chipotles. Your first forkful might surprise you: Dominguez’s spuds give off faint hints
Cocktails
Coa’s signature mezcal or tequila flights, a trio of 1-ounce pours, allows you to survey the restaurant’s impressive spirits list. Start there and make your way across cocktail offerings that showcases agave in a multitude of forms.
Sage Pineapple Smash: Imagine a hard lemonade sweetened with agave spired and spiked with reposado tequila. It’s a summertime sparkler complete with smashed pineapple for a hint of extra sweetness.
Valencia Old Fashioned: An old-fashioned made with tequila? Sounds like blasphemy, tastes like a summer evening in Mallorca with the breeze in full swing. The key is the use of orange tequila and a sprinkle of mole bitters. Balanced, nuanced and inventive, all in one sip.

of cherries and chiles rather than sweet smoke of Spanish paprika.
I think many of Dominguez’s riffs work, even though I’m sure tapas traditionalists will cry heresy. One of my favorite tapas, gambas al ajillo, is meant to be simple: Jumbo prawns lightly sauteed with garlic, chili, sherry and olive oil. Dominguez, however, prefers to bathe his shrimp in a warm lime vinaigrette, retaining the pungent “vampires-killer” garlic punch to the original while adding the kind of lime-kissed beautify normally found in Latin American ceviche.
Credit must be given to Jim and Tely Nagle, owners of the Drake Oak Brook Hotel, for sparing no expense in completely reimagining the hotel’s lower level. Coa, named after the paddleshaped tool used to harvest agave, is as personalized vision of a hotel restaurant as you’re likely to find in the suburbs.
Throughout the hotel, which is now part of Marriott’s Autograph Collection, the Nagles showcase a number of subtle homages to Tely’s love for her native Mexico, including a number of artisanal hand-blown glass flowers. But within Coa it’s a dual love affair, between Spain and Mexico.
Two massive monitors slowly cycle through photos of stunning natural landscapes, most of which were photographed in Spain. Mexican tilework from Guadalajara trims the open kitchen. And in a nice touch, cobalt-blue dishware are accompanied by blue napkins folded into the shape of blooming roses.
The space’s custom millwork is stunning. According to General Manger Gary Goralski, master carpenter Franco San Felice
wanted to honor Spain and Mexico’s shared appreciation for fine woodwork. His beautiful ceiling work is a sight to behold: slats of slanted wood are backlit with golden light, as if they were blinds thrown open to allow the Spanish (or Mexican) sunlight to stream into the room.
But none of this would work if Chef Dominguez failed to find the right balance between the Old World and New World in his menu. Of all our dishes, none tapped into our recent memories of Spain more than Dominguez’s grilled octopus, which is boiled for two hours and then perfectly crisped over the grill, before being dressed in bits of sweetly caramelized garlic. For the ultimate three-dish trio pair the octopus with Dominguez’ take on a tortilla Espanola, a kind of vertical potato pancake. Then order one of Dominguez’s paellas, which ranged between $24 and $37 during our visit. We opted for the paella mixta made with saffron rice and a combination of chicken, chorizo, red snapper and various shellfish. End your evening, as any self-respecting Spaniard would, with the crème Catalan.
After our meal, I was sufficiently impressed to type up some tasting notes to add to my collection, knowing that they’d have a dual use, for my next Spanish or Latin American culinary adventure.

Why not sell for more?
There are several benefits of partnering with your real estate agent and a skilled designer and contractor for pre-listing renovations, especially in luxury real estate.
Every person brings a unique skill and perspective to the project. Side-by-side, we work with the homeowners to understand their objective. Is it to sell fast? Is it to sell for more? Or is the goal something completely different?
In the case of this property in Oak Brook, our client had a beautiful, luxury home that they were ready to sell. But, in order to meet the expectations of the market at the time, the home needed some trendy updates to accommodate local buyer demand in the target pricepoint.
The results were astounding. The home was under contract after only a couple weeks on the market and sold for $2.45M.
