Works of Art is filled with all the looks you need for a best-dressed season photographed in the galleries of the Art Institute of Chicago’s Modern Wing and along the Nichols Bridgeway.

In Opening the Conversation, we meet Dr. Shikha Jain, who founded the Women In Medicine conference and non-profit organization. Dr. Jain and her family live in Hinsdale, where they enjoy the small town feel and walk-to-school lifestyle. I so enjoyed my conversation with her and know you will love learning more about her important work.

We meet Anna Bartz in Country Vs. Town, visit Bar Poca Madre for a Dinner Date in Burr Ridge, and travel to Fiji in Journeys.

The advice game is on-point this month too, with words of wisdom in Esquire and Collector’s Corner.

Living + Giving offers a fun look back on Hinsdale’s 4th of July Parade, where our own Gretchen Barnard served as co-Grand Marshal and families turned out in force to clap for veterans and bop to the beat of the Hinsdale Central Marching Band.

I hope you find some inspiration in these pages, Treat yourself to the satisfaction of trying something new this Fall. Enroll in a painting class or rediscover your love of dance or running. All the beautiful background footage from the Olympic Games has motivated me to improve my French. Take up something new this month and come back in October for a preview of some of the best and brightest Fall fundraisers, including the Wellness House Ball.

Enjoy the hustle and bustle of the new school year and do be in touch. We love to hear from you.

COUNTRY VS. TOWN

ANNA BARTZ

is originally from Windsor, Wisconsin, a small town outside Madison. Her family wove deep ties into the fabric of the community. Her mom served as a teacher in the district and dad distinguished himself in business and as a hall of fame wrestling coach. While Anna did not wrestle, watching her father coach with consistent excellence was a huge influence on her own athletic pursuits. She found success in track and field and ran at the University of Wisconsin, competing in the heptathlon. Anna gives a lighthearted primer on the heptathlon, “It’s essentially a celebration of mediocrity, meaning you’re okay at a few things, not an expert at any one event.” Men compete in 10 events (decathlon) and women compete in seven. Anna says, “Competing in the heptathlon in the Big Ten provided a crash course in bandwidth delegation, fortitude, and discipline that I refer to on the daily.”

After graduation from UW, she began her career in digital marketing in 2007 with shopbop, which had been acquired by Amazon at the time. “I was a merchandiser but quickly made the transition into the digital marketing sphere, including search, social, early affiliate marketing, and public relations, once that space began to pick up steam.”

A role with Weber Shandwick followed, where she worked on Got Milk?, Unilver, and Kraft accounts. Spending a wild number of hours building brands led to a lightbulb moment. She could utilize this skillset to further develop the brand her father grew from a two-person operation to a 13 site, three-country operation, EVCO Plastics.

Anna wrote a job description and pitched the idea of a marketing function. With the green light, she began building a communications function at EVCO 12 years ago. She currently works as VP of Communications and sit on the Board of Directors. Anna’s sister also circled back to EVCO a decade ago. She says, “Working together to continue our family’s legacy in a revitalized way as the third-generation ownership is incredibly rewarding and FUN! There are very few female owned and operated manufacturing businesses in our sector and we work diligently to provide an environment for women to grow and have a voice.”

Anna and her husband Dave moved to Hinsdale while expecting their oldest daughter, Samantha. Twins Daphne and Molly completed the family. The girls are very active in dance, soccer, and gymnastics. The family appreciates the incredible studios, clubs and programs that offer the girls opportunities for involvement and growth.

Anna is active in Hinsdale Junior Woman’s Club (HJWC), where she has chaired committees and led in executive board roles. She’s also a volunteer track coach at Hinsdale Central High School. Of this experience, she says, “Anyone who has been involved with athletics at some point in their life knows the role of a high school coach is one that extends far beyond the field of play. You are not just your athlete’s coach. You’re a mentor, you’re a leader, you’re a shoulder to cry on, you’re a friend. It’s a place in a teenager’s life I take very seriously, and I love seeing the young women I have the privilege to coach on the track go on and accomplish tremendous things off the track.”

COUNTRY VS. TOWN

Do you have a mantra? My dad used to say this to me all the time growing up when I would get hyper involved in too many things “Moderation in everything, except what you want to be good at.” On your reading stack? The Loves of Theodore Roosevelt: The Women Who Created a President, a very purposeful gift from my dad, aka the original girl dad. What’s your signature entertaining style? Lake house casual. It’s all about a signature cocktail happy hour while yacht rock plays in the background, bulk meals for the masses on the Blackstone, and pot-luck style dinners where everyone contributes. Any daily rituals that make you feel centered? Movement! I’m still a runner, but you couldn’t pay me to run a marathon. I opt for Peloton interval and bootcamp classes. Music you love? Anything with elevated beats per minute. The soundtrack to my life needs to help keep me pushing forward. Favorite autumn traditions? There’s nothing more Fall to me than football games at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison. Badger Athletics has been a constant for my family: my grandfather boxed, my father coached wrestling, and my sister was on the Dance Team.

WHEN IN TOWN WHEN IN THE COUNTRY

What’s your go-to outfit? I wear an absurd amount of black. Is there anything you can’t leave the house without? My Oura ring. Understanding recovery is just as important as tracking your total movement. Oura provides all the analytics you need to understand how much training your body is ready to take that day. Where do they know you by name? They call me Coach Bartz by the jumping pits at HCHS. Do you have a favorite memory of living in the area? When I was on the Executive Board of HJWC, we were challenged with hosting our annual benefit in the middle of dynamic COVID-19 restrictions. In the end, we executed a beautiful affair at Burdi Clothiers. Hosting HJWC’s premier event in Hinsdale proper made it extra special. If an ad agency asked you to write a commercial for your town, what would you say? Come for the schools, stay for the neighbors.

Do you wear any outfits or accessories that like too much day to day but is perfect for the city? I wear very minimal jewelry and seldom swap out my handbag in my everyday life. Outings in the city provide an avenue to bring out archived bags passed down from my mom. What’s in that vintage bag? A hotel pen, AirPods, and 12 different lip products. I’m on the road a decent amount for work and you never know when you’ll need a fresh lip on a Teams call. View that never gets old? Walking through the Division Street tunnel to the Lakeshore Path and taking in view of the city waking up in the morning will forever make me pause for a moment and take it all in. Best quick bite or hidden gem? Sweet Bean in the South Loop. It’s a darling Taiwanese café that’s female owned, by one of my favorite mentees from Whitney Young. What is your favorite movie filmed or set in Chicago? Wayne’s World. Growing up, I never missed Saturday Night Live and even though several other movies have spun off from SNL characters, Wayne’s World has to be the most quotable.

Jasper Johns (American, b. 1930) Target, 1974

Instantly recognizable for its motif and bright fresh colors, Jasper Johns’ Target stands as an iconic symbol of Johns’ bridge between Abstract Expressionism and Modernism. The handmade paper gives an almost sculptural quality to the edition and is a testament to the eye of one of the most important artists of post-war America.

Alex Katz (American, b.1927) Samantha, 1987

Alex Katz is well known for his stunning portraits and Samantha stands among his finest work. His masterful eye, equally skilled in framing his subject and selecting the perfect color to capture the mood, is on full display. Making it all the more impressive, the piece stands at just over five-and-a-half feet tall, giving it a wow factor that multiplies Katz’s genius by a factor of five.

Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881–1973)

Le Repas Frugal, 1904; printed 1913 etching

Nothing more clearly shows us Picasso’s genius than his etching Le Repas Frugal

Created at the age of 23, the second print he made, with no training in printmaking, it is indisputably one of the greatest graphic works in the history of the medium. The only print linked to his Blue Period, Le Repas Frugal was created in 1904, just after the artist moved from Spain to Paris.

Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881–1973)

Visage au nez noir, (A.R. 609) including original wooden crate from Madoura, 1969

This remarkable ceramic is the full package for Picasso lovers. Not only is it a quintessential pottery form with the artist’s unique style and whimsical motifs on full display, but it comes with its original crate from the Madoura Studio in Vallauris, France where the famed artist made many of his iconic ceramics. This particular piece has remained in the current owner’s collection since originally purchasing it from the studio in the 1960s.

THE RIGHTS OF UNMARRIED PARENTS IN ILLINOIS

Legal Perspectives and Statutory Framework

In Illinois, the legal landscape for unmarried parents differs significantly from that of married couples, particularly regarding parental rights and responsibilities. Understanding these distinctions is crucial for unmarried parents navigating custody, visitation, and child support issues. This article examines the rights of unmarried parents in Illinois, highlighting relevant statutes and legal provisions.

ESTABLISHING PATERNITY

For unmarried fathers, establishing paternity is the first crucial step in securing parental rights. Without legal paternity, a father has no enforceable rights to custody or visitation. Illinois law provides several methods for establishing paternity:

1. Voluntary Acknowledgment of Paternity (VAP): Both parents can sign a VAP form, typically at the hospital when the child is born. This form must be filed with the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services to be legally binding.

2. Administrative or Judicial Order: If there is any dispute or if the VAP is not signed, paternity can be established through an administrative order by the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services or a court order following genetic testing.

Once paternity is established, the father gains the rights and responsibilities of a parent, including the right to seek custody and visitation, and the obligation to provide child support.

CUSTODY AND VISITATION

In Illinois, the terms “custody” and “visitation” have been replaced with “allocation of parental responsibilities” and “parenting time,” respectively, to better reflect the nature of parenting arrangements. The Illinois Marriage and Dissolution of Marriage Act (750 ILCS 5) governs these aspects for both married and unmarried parents.

Allocation of Parental Responsibilities: This refers to decision-making authority over major aspects of the child’s life, including education, health care, religion, and extracurricular activities. The court determines these responsibilities based on the child’s best interests, considering factors such as:

• Each parent’s wishes and the child’s needs.

• The child’s relationship with each parent and any siblings.

• The child’s adjustment to home, school, and community.

• The mental and physical health of all parties involved.

• Any histor y of violence or abuse.

Parenting Time: This involves the schedule of when the child spends time with each parent. Illinois courts encourage both parents to be involved in their child’s life, aiming for arrangements that serve the child’s best interests. Factors influencing parenting time include the parents’ availability, the child’s routine, and the parents’ ability to cooperate.

RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF UNMARRIED MOTHERS

Under Illinois law, an unmarried mother automatically has sole physical and legal custody of the child at birth. This means she has the exclusive right to make decisions regarding the child’s welfare until paternity is established and a court order is issued regarding custody and visitation. However, once paternity is established, unmarried mothers are subject to the same legal standards as a married parent.

CHILD SUPPORT OBLIGATIONS

Both parents, regardless of marital status, are responsible for supporting their child financially. Illinois uses an “income shares” model to calculate child support, which considers the income of both parents. The goal is to ensure the child receives the same proportion of parental income they would have if the parents lived together.

The court can also allocate additional expenses, such as health care, education, and extracurricular activities, between the parents, proportionally to their income before child support. Child support orders are enforceable through the courts and often paid through the State Disbursement Unit through direct deduction from the parent’s paycheck to ensure compliance and regular payments.

LEGAL ASSISTANCE AND ADVOCACY

Navigating the complexities of parental rights and responsibilities can be challenging for unmarried parents. Legal assistance is often essential to ensure that rights are protected, and responsibilities are clearly defined. Strategic Divorce can protect unmarried parents with paternity actions, custody disputes, and child support issues, providing representation and guidance throughout the legal process.

CONVERSATION Opening the

This dynamic physician makes her home in Hinsdale while leading the evolution of empowerment for professionals at all levels.

Dr. Shikha Jain is a triple board-certified hematologist and oncologist, and a tenured Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Illinois in Chicago, where she cares deeply for oncology patients, and leads initiatives in communication strategies and digital innovation in oncology at the University of Illinois Cancer Center.

There is definitive data showing that when women physicians are taking care of patients, outcomes are excellent. Their patients are less likely to be readmitted, and their surgical results are overwhelmingly positive. Men make outstanding doctors and colleagues. Women are also exceptional and keeping them out is a disservice.

In the spirit of better outcomes for all, Dr. Jain founded the Women in Medicine nonprofit and the CEO and founder of the Women in Medicine Summit, initiatives dedicated to advancing the impact of women in healthcare through leadership, advocacy, and professional development. Her leadership has propelled the summit into a pivotal event that addresses the challenges and celebrates the achievements of women in medicine.

“Barriers have existed for women in medicine since the first woman entered the healthcare workforce. The focus of this summit is to identify barriers women in medicine face and create action plans that can be executed at both the local and national level. During the two-day summit, faculty facilitate breakout sessions and presentations given by diverse speakers from various specialties and institutions,”

Women and men attend, colleagues spending time learning from one another and building better institutions when they return to their home hospitals and medical operations. The days are filled with engaging keynote addresses, informative plenary sessions, interactive breakout sessions, and enriching networking experiences. Dr. Jain launched the Summit in 2019 while

on staff at Northwestern. “There was so much energy and inertia, with 450 people attending and excited to bring ideas back to their practices, I knew there was more to do,” Dr. Jain says.

The 2020 Summit was held virtually. Even through screens, it was obvious that attendees were responding to the information, and it was important to keep going. “I could sense we needed more and conferred with others on what to do.” Dr. Jain says, adding, “As we headed into planning for 2021, we added programming for early career physicians and administrators, we added tracks for those in their mid-career years, we added sessions for men because they are important in this mission. We have to be allies to one another.”

“When all doctors are supported, the whole world benefits...”

The movement continues to gain momentum. With a research center, speakers bureau, and advocacy initiatives, Dr. Jain and her team keep elevating. To celebrate the continued progress of physicians and administrators, the 2024 Summit will include the first Women in Medicine Awards Gala.

Dr. Jain looks forward to applauding her colleagues. “The men and women who attend are working together to change the system and do things better for the next generation. Classic Beauty

Layers, lighting, and a thoroughly thoughtful approach to refreshing the design of this already lovely Hinsdale home create the ultimate in timeless style.

WORDS BY MICHELLE CROWE PHOTOGRAPHY BY HEATHER TALBERT STYLING BY JENNIFER DECLEENE

Designer LJ Savarie and her Savarie Interiors team refreshed this gracious Hinsdale home room by room, honoring the choices made by the homeowner and her beloved mother 20 years ago. With fresh fabrics from the finest textile houses, outstanding artwork, and an emphasis on textures, each room is a welcoming jewel box.

THE HAPPIEST PRIMARY

“This is a happy room with impact and a bit of punch,” LJ says. Lighting takes the lead, with a spectacular lantern from Coleen & Co. emphasizing the soaring ceiling height and a pair of Visual Comfort table lamps adding a modern touch. The drapery, chaise lounge, x-benches, and tassel trim on the bed skirt all complement the Quadrille fabric on the lumbar pillow. It’s the subtle anchor to the room’s special touches which together create a retreat that’s thoughtful, layered and somewhat unexpected.

THE AIRY OFFICE

Located off the primary, this is a space in which anyone would love to work. The pretty, leafy green sets the tone and works wonderfully with the patterns LJ expertly mixed with the Thibaut fabric on the chair, striped Roman shades, and a neutral floor. “There are so many patterns in the room, but it’s quiet to the eye, interesting, and pleasing,” LJ says. Custom Botanicals by local artist Maresca Textiles are the perfect finishing touch.

AN APPEALING DINING ROOM

Big gatherings are de rigueur in this family. At least 20 more years of memories will be made under the Gracie wallpaper panels and Iatesta Studio chandelier. Savarie chose a beautifully textured silk wallpaper from Phillip Jeffries. Silk shades with the slightest hint of green adorn the sconces.

THE LIVELY LIVING ROOM

Often full of friends and family, this elegant, light-filled room is adjacent to the dining room and Savarie expertly wove the two spaces together. The sconces with hand painted details repeat here and the custom consoles with Greek key details pull in the apricot hue.

A large-scale sisal rug is the perfect counterpoint to the refreshed upholstery and Cowan and Tout drapery. “It’s inviting, not stuffy, and perfect for hosting family and friends, which this couple loves to do,” LJ says.

THE ELEGANT BAR

“Sometimes the smallest rooms can be the most impactful,” LJ says about the luxe bar space. The stonework was in place, the goal for this space was to add layers of interest. The cabinets are lacquered in an exquisite pale blue and finished with lacquered brass hardware for an old school look. A Coleen and Company light fixture with fretwork adds a final exclamation mark of style.

THE PRETTIEST POWDER ROOM

Chocolate and blue Brunschwig & Fils wallpaper and fabric create a cozy and chic haven. The custom periwinkle blue sconces by Pared Lighting highlight the blue in the pattern. “It’s a big hit with guests,” LJ says.

MADRE KNOWS BEST

At Bar Poca Madre in Burr Ridge, John Mauro, a well-seasoned veteran of Chicago’s Mexican restaurant scene, gives suburbanites a taste of his best stuff.

How exactly do you say “opa” in Spanish? I’m asking because there’s a bartender from Bar Poca Madre, a sleek new Mexican restaurant in Burr Ridge, standing next to our table, holding a shot of tequila, a lighter and one searingly hot platter of cheese.

Hmm, this looks familiar. A block of cheese. A flammable liquid. A fire source. We’ve all seen this particular tableside magic show before, haven’t we? Happens dozens of times a day down in Greektown in the city. Only the platter our incredibly affable server, Diego, is holding features panela, a mild yet firm cow’s milk cheese from Mexico, which is coated with a mild tomato-based salsa.

The melty panela, fresh out of the oven, is so hot its practically percolating. “The key,” Diego says, “is to let the cheese cool off— and to use only half a shot of tequila.” When the cheese comes to rest, Diego flicks his wrist, dousing the panela with a splash of tequila. Flames rise. A pyromaniac one table down coos in delight—almost too gleefully. The flames die out. (Our nearby friendly arsonist sighs, audibly.) But Diego is smiling. He tells us to dig in while it’s still burbling.

Our forks and knives have it. Wow. Who could have guessed? It works. It’s more nuanced than any saganaki you’ll get down in Greektown. It’s chewy, creamy, and redolent with Mexican oregano. The bottom layer is slightly charred, so that cheese keeps

DINNER DATE

its shape and doesn’t run through the tines of your fork. Somewhere Wolfgang Puck, the master of multicultural pizzas, must be smiling because the dish, called queso poca madre, tastes like a Mexican-style pizza sans the crust.

We polish off the app in two minutes flat. I scan the table. Look what’s still there? The half shot of tequila. It’s practically begging to play the role of chaser. And there, in the distance, back at the bar, Diego is winking at us, as if to say you know what to do with that leftover tequila, don’t you?

This much I do know: John Mauro, the owner of Bar Poca Madre, knows how to run a restaurant. Back in 2006, he opened La Cantina Grill in the South Loop, a stone’s throw from McCormick Place. It’s still thriving almost two decades later. What does that tell you?

It tells me that he understands the importance of giving diners what they want. Big portions. Surprisingly affordable price points. And lots and lots of options. Bar Poca Madre’s offerings read, therefore, more like a catalogue more than a menu. It includes tacos and mini chimichangas and empanadas and burritos. Moles? Check. Quesabirrias? Check. Tex-Mex classics. Got ’em. Plus a dozen plus seafood dishes.

For an appetizer, we recommend the sweet-spicy whitefish ceviche chilango, a minced seafood tower studded with bits of sweet carrots and a touch of habanero. And you’ll be hard pressed to find a more tender and flavorful Mexican-style skirt steak this side of Pilsen. “I pay extra for that skirt steak,” says Mauro. “But you can’t run a good Mexican restaurant without a great skirt steak.”

It’s equally encouraging to see Bar Poca

Madre’s sleek horseshoe shaped bar, fringed with TVs and beautiful ironwork, has already become a favorite meeting spot for a smattering of local restaurateurs and lots of regulars.

This had been the plan from the jump. When Mauro, who lives in Burr Ridge, noticed a dearth of authentic Mexican fare in the area, his longtime chef, Luciano Ocelotl, not only encouraged him to fill that need with a new restaurant, he asked if he could invest in the venture as well. “Luciano is like a brother to me,” says Mauro. But he also credits his wife, Lizzie, who is of Mexican descent, for helping shape the look and feel of the restaurant.

Mauro, who has experience in the building trade, wanted to avoid old-school taqueria cliches at all costs. A pink neon sign, which reads the “Tequila Made Me Do It” greets customers, but the space itself pays homage to the rugged earth tones and minimalistic design aesthetics you’d find in a high-end restaurant in San Diego. Backlit alcoves, displaying Mexican pottery, run up the length of the walls. Food is slid onto butcherblock tables and Mexican tilework add pops of color to whitewashed walls.

Not bad for an Italian guy from Oak Park, who was reared on Sicilian and Neapolitan

Cocktails

The tequila list at Bar Poca Madre is impressive and well curated. The best way to sample the best of what owner John Mauro has it to order one of his tequila flights.

Tio Jaimito:

The Mai Tai’s had its day in the sun. The future belongs to its Mexican cousin, the tia mia, a diabolically smooth blend of dark rum, mezcal, lime juice, triple sec and orgeat. Bar Poca Madre’s take on the tia mia may be the smokiest tiki drink around and comes with a frothy 151 rum floater.

Mezcal Skinny Margarita:

The difference between a classic margarita and a skinny margarita usually comes down fewer calories and less sugar. But Bar Poca Madre’s best special “skinny” swaps in mezcal for tequila. Not only does this produce a superior thirst quencher, it’s also a better pairing for some of the restaurant’s spicier offerings.

Ceviche Chilango
A welcome addition to Burr Ridge

food as a kid. It’s Ocelotl’s job to keep the menu as authentic as possible. His cochinita pibil, Yucatan-style barbecue pork, might not have been slowly roasted in underground fire pits the way the ancient Mayans did it, but Ocelotl’s pork is so tender you’d swear it was. The achiote-flavored jus drizzled over pork tastes like it was infused with blood oranges and spiked with a shot of Cointreau.

Mauro will be the first to admit that some of the more Americanized dishes on Bar Poca Madre’s menu, including the Mexican-style saganaki, were his ideas. But you have to give Mauro credit for working with Ocelotl to perfect the kitchen’s al pastor-spiced octopus. Growing up, Mauro picked up a little octopus hack from his grandfather: He adds celery to a pot of boiling water before the octopus goes in. after slowly simmering it for 90 minutes later, the octopus will emerge tender and less pungent had you boiled it in just water. From there Ocelotl rubs the octopus with his signature adobe spice rub. When orders come in, they’re sent to the grill to be fired, enshrouding the octopus in the pineapple-scented flavors that are the hallmarks of al pastor taco.

DINNER DATE

At the end of our meal, it wasn’t hard to find Mauro, who likes to walk the floor of his restaurants, catching up with regulars, asking questions about the quality of the food and getting to know new guests. “In this business,” says Mauro, “you have to have a passion for the food you serve—or you’ll never last.” To which one can only say, “Opa, John!” it looks the passion—and fire—are burning as bright as ever.

FIJI’S OWN GILLIGAN’S ISLAND - ONLY FAR BETTER

Kokomo Private Island Resort Delivers

Whispered Luxury in the South Pacific

WORDS BY JULIE L. KESSLER

Mention the South Pacific to anyone, and the images that generally come to mind are swaying palms, balmy weather, and warm, turquoise waters replete with resplendent marine life. Mention Fiji, and you get all of that, plus specifically, some of the kindest and most hospitable people on planet earth.

No small wonder then when the Australian, self-made billionaire Lang Walker saw the mind-bogglingly beautiful Fijian island, originally called Yaukuve, about an hour flight by either twin-otter DHC-6 seaplane or AStar 350

helicopter from Kokomo’s private luxury hangar in Nadi, Walker bought the island’s leasehold in 2011. He then renamed it Kokomo – a pseudonym of a composer whose music Walker once played as a child – then spared no expense developing one-third of the 140-acre island into a peaceful Pacific paradise that opened to guests in 2017. And in Lang’s typical philanthropic style of arranging matters, the ground rent for the island, payable to the village chief of nearby Dravuni island, population 60, supplies the requisite income to better the lives of Dravuni islanders with a school and other much needed infrastructure.

JOURNEYS

What resulted on Kokomo is a spectacular, exclusive, luxury resort. One that Thurston Howell III and his wife Lovey could never have imagined. Of course, Gilligan himself would have been thrilled to use the ocean-front hammocks that grace each villa and residence, while the Professor would have swooned over and most likely written another PhD dissertation on the Great Astrolabe Reef – the world’s fourth largest – that is quite literally Kokomo’s playground, just minutes away by boat.

ACCOMMODATIONS FIT FOR ROYALS

On arrival to Kokomo’s jetty or helipad – transport is determined by pilots while accounting for daily weather patterns – guests are whisked away to their villa or residence by electric golf cart. There’s a total of 21 oceanfront one, two, and three-bedroom villas, half on the island’s Sunrise side where I stayed, and half on the island’s Sunset side. There are also six grand hilltop residences comprising three to six-bedrooms containing 3,272 to 11,916 square feet. All residences are equipped with a personal golf cart, butler, and nanny, ensuring every need is seamlessly met.

The villa’s double wood gates provide entrée into a porte cocher amid lush greenery and is fully rock walled for the utmost in privacy. This leads to a private garden, with verdant, impeccably manicured surrounds. The outdoor deck contains a king-size day bed, an additional twin day bed, a four-person dining table, two

loungers and a strategically placed hammock in between two perfectly positioned palm trees overlooking the pristine, white sandy beach. There’s also a wonderful, large private pool, and secluded, massive, outdoor shower.

The interior of the spacious villa, comprised of nearly 1,300 square feet, is deftly decorated to define how island dreams are created and seemingly where Martha Stewart happily married island chic. Roofs are high-pitched, utilizing local woods and rattan. The large living room had a full-size sofa, lounger, rattan chairs and workspace. The kitchenette contained a stocked minibar, and house made snacks, including divine chocolatecovered honeycomb produced by island bees. The Nespresso coffee machine and milk frother made mornings picture perfect.

The sublime bedroom is decorated in a neutral, calming color palette with both Fijian Tapa art and modern abstract pieces by Australian artist Chris Kenyon. Kenyon was in residence on the island for

several months and over 200 of his pieces embellish Kokomo. Another 20 pieces by talented Australian artist John Olsen also adorn the resort. Dreams were deliriously sweet on the fantastic king-sized bed fitted with Madison Collection linens. Another seating area and desk completed the bedroom.

A his and hers walk-through closet had enough space for those with the luxury of staying a month – though most guests stay a week. The bathroom had large dual vanities separated by a twoperson walk-in shower and thick, enveloping towels, also by the Madison Collection. A freestanding deep-soaking bathtub in a beautiful separate haven of tranquility with seashells strung overhead, naturally had a glorious ocean view.

EAT, DRINK & BE MERRY

Of course, there is in-room dining delivered by golf cart which can be enjoyed inside one’s villa or outside on one’s private deck. The oceanfront Beach Shack restaurant exudes casual elegance serving delightful breakfasts with fresh tropical fruits, and some of the finest Bircher muesli I can recall. I also enjoyed perfect eggs Benedict and another day, my staple, avocado toast.

Though I was normally too full midday, there were many choices at Beach Shack daily with seasonal specials and something for

every palate at both lunch and dinner. Here the affable Australian Chef Andrew presides, and at dinner I devoured a lovely crudo bathed in tangy lilikoi and red snapper with blistered tomatoes. Another night at Beach Grill, the sunset barbeque was perfect after a long day spent snorkeling.

At Koko Cabana, serving both lunch and dinner, Chef Enzo prepares fusion Mediterranean Fijian dishes from the freshest ingredients and lords over a pizza oven creating pies that will likely have you simultaneously saying “Mamma mia” while singing ‘O sole mio’ in perfect Italian after just a couple of bites.

One must ‘walk the plank’ to arrive at the picturesque oceanfront Walker D. Plank restaurant. And I would gladly walk that plank every single day of my life. Culinary powerhouse Fijian Chef Caroline is not one guests soon forget. Yes, it’s true she is extremely talented, and her food will make you weep with joy. However, it is also her utterly delightful, one-of-a-kind personality, and infectious smile that renders guests downright giddy when she sits down to chat.

During one meal she perfectly prepared the freshest sashimi, tender calamari, giant lobster claws, and delectable, caramelized pork ribs making crystal clear I would never be a vegetarian. At another meal, I devoured lettuce wraps with chopped prawns, chili flakes and fish sauce, happily washing that down with a red snapper salad wrap. It’s entirely possible I may forever dream of another plank walk.

Freshness and sustainability are key themes on Kokomo. In addition to its hives, Kokomo has a 5.5-acre farm, a hydroponic greenhouse for leafy greens, and 300 free range chickens producing over 60-percent of the island’s needs. Kokomo has its own desalination and recycling plants and a reverse osmosis water

system while also engaging in mangrove reforestation and coral restoration which can be seen while snorkeling near the jetty.

TO DO OR NOT TO DO

Naturally Kokomo may be the most perfect place on planet earth to do absolutely nothing. That said, there is serious magic both on the island and in the immediate surrounds.

The Yaukuve Spa Sanctuary has talented Fijian masseuses that nearly caused me to forget my name. Playing tennis with the pro’s assistant started most of my mornings. The walk to the hilltop state-ofthe-art fitness center got my cardio going while the views took my breath away. When I completed my workout, the trainer, as if right out of central casting, handed me a chilled, fresh coconut.

Snorkeling on both the Sunrise and Sunset sides of Kokomo is fantastic. Clear, balmy, turquoise waters, healthy reefs, and abundant, colorful fish with a plethora of huge, electric blue starfish. One day just before dusk, as if on cue, an entire community of spotted eagle rays frolicked about directly in front of the Beach Shack giddily entertaining us during happy hour.

The nearly 63-miles-long Great Astrolabe Reef contains one of the world’s most biologically diverse marine areas providing several dozen marvelous snorkel and dive sites within minutes of Kokomo. One afternoon three marine biologists, another couple and I boarded ‘Real Time,’ Kokomo’s 27-foot double-hull boat to snorkel nearby Serendipity and Wonderland sites. It was the couple’s firsttime snorkeling, and it became quite clear they were forever altered by the extraordinary experience in these heavenly waters.

Another day we took Real Time to nearby Kadavu island and hiked up to a massive waterfall, naturally jumping in on arrival to cool off. En route, villagers were happy to engage, with one lovely elderly woman showing me how she made pandanus straw floormats for her home.

There’s also paddleboarding, kayaking, an ocean trampoline, and deep-sea fishing. For a deeper dive into local Fijian culture there are village visits on nearby Ono island. Guests can also be dropped off at the nearby uninhabited island of Namara with a packed picnic for a few hours of isolated perfection or indulge in a private starlight dinner or sunset cruise. Or simply have a cocktail at the bar, dreamily stare at the 12 islands in the near distance – only eight of which are populated – and dwell upon your indisputable good fortune for landing on Kokomo.

PARTING THOUGHTS

Mother Nature has been undeniably kind and generous to Kokomo. Happily, Father Time, coupled with the brilliant foresight and expertise of Lang Walker, has taken care of the rest and made Kokomo marvelous. Sadly, Walker passed away in Sydney just a

few days before I arrived on Kokomo. Without a doubt though, Lang’s spirit lives on throughout the island he deeply loved, while the island’s kind, attentive employees carry the torch onward, sharing this Eden-like slice of heaven with those fortunate enough to experience it.

I’m hopeful that if I’m lucky enough to get to the pearly gates one day, it will look exactly like Kokomo Private Island Resort. The good news is that one can enjoy this remarkable place where island dreams become reality amid luxurious accommodations, balmy turquoise waters, and multi-hued sunsets while still alive. Sota tale Kokomo.
