How much would you pay for a home with a private beach in Winnetka? In the case of the two home sales that closed within 30 days of each other in the village this summer, that price tag was in excess of $12 million. Both home sellers were represented by Jena Radnay of @properties in Winnetka.

A property at 691 Sheridan Road that includes nearly 100 feet of private beach closed in July for $12.5 million, putting it at the top of the list as the most expensive home sold in Illinois so far in 2023. Another Winnetka home at 445 Sheridan Road is not far behind, closing in August for $12.25 million. That estate sits on 2.24 acres and features 175 feet of private beach—a precious amenity on the North Shore.

“The property at 445 Sheridan Road was a multiple bid situation, and then my 691 Sheridan listing—which closed right before it—was on the market for less than a week,” notes Radnay. “It was fast, and I had multiple interested parties in that as well.”

She says Winnetka lakefront properties are especially in demand because the village has fewer regulations on what property owners can do with that premium Lake Michigan frontage. Adding to the allure is topography that allows for more direct access to the lake.

“Our bluffs are more varied than other parts of the North Shore, which means we don't have to go down a ravine to get to our beaches,” says Radnay, explaining that the village’s location just 18 miles from Chicago is another huge selling point for buyers in the market for lakefront property.

“That’s why I think the Winnetka market offers the highest value.”

While there are some homes with private beaches in Wilmette, she says those lots are harder to find. That means that those look-

ing for lakefront living with a private beach tend to drift north to Winnetka, which has more options. In the case of the two estates that sold this summer, each has its own unique appeal.

“The property at 691 Sheridan was a ‘home run’ because it was fully updated. The pool was done, the beach house was done, and it was a turnkey property,” she says. “The appeal was both its large lot and prime location, which is within walking distance of downtown.”

Radnay says the home was attractive to families with multiple children and also to those who always coveted a house with a private beach. The light and airy beach feel of the interiors and the fact the home was already fully rehabbed only enhanced the allure.

“It’s like a Malibu house off the coast of California. Even the exterior feels like Malibu. It has that total beach vibe that really resonates with buyers,” she says. “That property was something that I haven't seen

on the market in years.”

As unusual as it might sound when discussing properties in the $12 million+ price bracket, another aspect both homes offered is economic value. Radnay says there just aren’t that many houses along the lakefront with private beaches, so $12 million for a property of that caliber can still be a pretty good deal.

The challenge for homebuyers now who are looking for a house with a private beach or even on the lakefront in Winnetka is that they’ve all been scooped up. There's not a single lakefront property on the market right now on the Private Listing or MLS at press time.

“I think from what I'm seeing, there is still a huge demand because buyers are calling me directly and asking me what other luxury listings I have,” says Radnay. “I just think if people are going to leave the city and trade their penthouse residence for a property on the North Shore, they’re going to want something really special.”

SMASHING RECORD

Billy Corgan and his bandmates in The Smashing Pumpkins thought for a few years about how to mark the 30th anniversary of the release of their second and landmark album Siamese Dream. It even got to a point where they had a plan, but the plan didn’t pan out. Corgan found himself angry when thinking about missing the opportunity to celebrate what was a special moment in the band’s life.

Then an idea hit him, and it had to do with nuptials. About three weeks before his September 16 wedding with his partner, Chlóe Mendel, it occurred to him friends, family, and colleagues would all be in town, so why not do a show celebrating the record at the couple’s teahouse in Highland Park, Madame Zuzu's? But there was the small matter of complicating what was already a busy weekend.

“I called Chlóe and said, ‘Can we try and do something the day after the wedding since everybody’s going to be here’?” he says. “She was in full-on, wedding-planning mode and graciously took on the responsibility of setting up the show.”

Then another idea hit him.

Just prior to the release of Siamese Dream in 1993, The Smashing Pumpkins were due to perform in-store at the old Tower Records location on Clark and Belden streets in Chicago. It’s now well-documented rock history that because a copy of the album had leaked and been distributed underground, 3,000 people showed up for the concert.

Police were called, streets were closed, and the show was moved outside.

So, as part of the anniversary celebration and to give a nod to the “Triumph at Tower,” one could call it, Mendel negotiated with Tower Records to put in a pop-up store at Madame Zuzu’s for the weekend. This time, there were no cops, and the show went off without a hitch.

“The opportunity to put the whole thing together certainly was unique, but it ended up being as good as it could be,” says Corgan. “We were very, very happy with it

and it felt right that we did something. The people around me who were skeptical said it turned out to be pretty special.”

The Pumpkins performed two sets on the evening, pretty much replicating the show they did at Tower three decades ago. Corgan says it took a while for the band to find its groove but by the time the second set rolled around, the band was in sync. He plans to make the concert available on vinyl, something he’s been doing with his archive for some time.

“We’ve been very successful in selling archival releases from the band and that’s a big part of the business model at Zuzu’s, selling vinyl out of my own archives,” he says. “So, we feel we got it. Honestly it was just a magical weekend getting married to the love of my life and going out with the band. It’s a pretty wild journey and doing it all in one weekend made it even more crazy.”

Asked if doing the show at Zuzu’s provided an opportunity to reminisce, Corgan says he was really too busy with the weekend’s other activities to give it much thought. But upon reflection, he says he was around 25

years old when the band recorded Siamese Dream and the record reveals the intensity and the challenges one goes through at that age. Now, it’s more a sense of feeling settled.

“Now I’m in a room in a café surrounded by fans who’ve seen the band over 100 times and my wife, who I have an 11-year relationship with, and my children,” he says. “It’s more like a sense of a full-circle journey; less sentimental, more like a feeling of arrival.”

Anyone who’s followed The Smashing Pumpkins since their early days knows the band, and its individual members, have had their challenges over the years, a lot of them aired in music and gossip publications because of the band’s high profile. Corgan says the feeling of arrival applies to the band as well, especially between he, guitarist James Iha, and drummer Jimmy Chamberlain.

“It’s a wonderful feeling that we have made the peace and survived all that’s been thrown at us as well as what we put each other through,” he says. “There’s a sense I have now that everything that happens going forward is just icing on the cake as long, of course, as it’s about music.”

BEST OF THE FEST

Rex Reed shares his top picks from the 48th Toronto International Film Festival.

The gloom and doom persistently pumped out of Hollywood in the middle of the Writers Guild and SAG-AFTRA strikes cast a predictably shadowy pall over the recent 48th Toronto International Film Festival (a.k.a. TIFF). Red carpets with no stars, independent films for sale with no buyers, opening nights with no cocktails or late-night dinner parties. The result was a mellower, more laid back TIFF than the world has come to expect.

Local restaurants, hotels, and limo companies were on the record complaining about disastrous revenues and wondering how business could survive a festival that used to account for $114 million in revenue but was now reduced to half of the usual profit, while a diminished circus of fans and gawkers was guaranteed.

The biggest restaurant booking this year was reportedly for 230 guests, down from the typical opening night parties for 500 last year. The streets were still closed to traffic and open to rock bands, but when the Hollywood stars don't show up, neither do the photographers, the fans and the press.

But if the dazzle was at an all-time low, the razzle was at an all-time high. With more than 400 films from 43 countries projected over 10 days of screenings, lectures, discussions, workshops, and special events, there was still plenty to see.

Stories about the horrors of the Holocaust have kept the movie industry energized for years. Every footnote to World War II about what the Nazis did to impact world history has been turned into a dramatic film as soon as it is discovered, revealed, and reported, and

this year's TIFF program included no fewer than a dozen new ones—all received with positive critical and audience approval, proving the season ahead has plenty of seriousness for filmgoers to look for.

THE ZONE OF INTEREST

At the top of the list, from the U.K. and Poland, was British director Jonathan Glazer's The Zone of Interest, a somber focus on the domestic life of Rudolf Hoss, the commandant of Auschwitz, his wife Hedwig, and their five children, all striving to maintain a semblance of "normalcy" in an idyllic home built on the edge of one of the most heinous concentration camps of the war.

We forget the Nazis had homes, too, even if they were secluded behind bars. Filmed in Poland where the action took place, the film eschews the usual scenes of torture and mass murder as the lumbering Hoss (ChristianFriedel) goes to work each day as though he's on his way to a dull office job, while Hedwig (beautifully portrayed by rising German actress Sandra Huller) gains weight preparing meals of meat and potatoes while ignoring the muffled screams on the other side of her garden wall.

You don't recoil from the violence you know is happening nearby, but you wince with the knowledge of what you don't see, as Hoss and his business "associates" conduct conversations on how long it takes to burn a quota of 700 Jews a day and dispose of the ashes in an orderly, cost-effective manner. You see Hedwig teach her children the names of flowers in their garden, fertilizing and cutting bouquets of phlox, dahlias, and fragrant roses, and accompanying the family on a peaceful picnic to a bucolic lake, paying no attention to the smoke rising from chimneys in the distance.

In one particularly disturbing scene, Hedwig tries on clothes and cosmetics, thrilled with excitement over a new mink coat. It takes a moment to realize the new acquisitions have been confiscated from freight cars depositing new arrivals marked for massive exterminations. The icy style, penetrating musical score, and calm, straightforward camerawork make for a cold, masterful experience. Nothing startling in the way of action ever happens, and the film, based on the 2014 novel by the late Kingsley Amis, is slow as Christmas.

Still, the realization that this is the first time, as far as I know, that the subject of the home life of Nazis posing as dull, ordinary citizens against a backdrop of war has ever been the subject of a major motion picture is probably one of the reasons The Zone of Interest won this year's grand prize in Cannes and will follow its appearance in Toronto with next week's New York Film Festival. I didn't love it, but I consider it one for your must-see list.

IRENA’S VOW

Another major achievement on a similar note was Irena's Vow, a well-documented but still hard-to-believe true story by Canada's Louise Archambault, also filmed in Poland. In 1939, after Germany invaded Warsaw, the hospital where a dedicated nurse named Irena Gut worked was bombed and she was assigned by the occupying Nazis to domestic duties in the home of a high-ranking German commandant, played with unexpected charisma by Dougray Scott.

In a tough, demanding, non-stop centerpiece role, the marvelous young actress Sophie Nelisse from the hit TV series Yellowjackets demands undivided attention for two hours as an apolitical maid so devastated after

witnessing the brutal murders of a baby and its mother that she makes a silent vow to save 12 Jewish refugees from their cruel fates by hiding them in the cellar of the Nazi colonel's house where she lives and works.

One harrowing narrow escape after the next creates hair-raising obstacles to her mission, further exacerbated when one of the Jews becomes pregnant and Irena refuses to allow an abortion as part of her vow. Nothing turns out as you expect it to, and the ultimate challenge arrives when the Nazi colonel discovers the Jews and demands a sexual partnership from Irena at the same time in order to save everyone's life.

The story seems fantastic, but as the facts compile, actual post-war records reveal that Irena was imprisoned by the Soviets as a German collaborator. But the story didn't end there. Now it was the Jews she saved whose turn was to save her.

LEE

Happily, among the pointless and pretentious drivel that plagues every film festival, Toronto 2023 was enhanced by several exemplary films of superior quality about real people challenging the world they live in that promise strong months ahead come awards season. I really loved Lee, a mesmerizing chronicle of highlights in the life and career of the great photojournalist Lee Miller, played with depth and passion by a sensational Kate Winslet.

Among her many unparalleled triumphs that still inspire and educate younger generations about the truths of World War II were the liberation of Paris, the horrors of the Buchenwald and Dachau concentration camps, and the powerful faces of allies and enemies alike who changed the chapters of history. In scene after scene of staggering glory guided

The Zone of Interest Lee
NORTH

brilliantly by female director Ellen Kuras, Lee captures the essence of a time and showcases a talent that never ceases to compel and captivate.

Among the odds she defied, she electrified astounded followers with the only photos ever taken of Hitler's private living headquarters in the Berlin bunker, including the famous shot of herself in Life magazine, stripped naked, and soaking in the hot water of the Fuehrer's bathtub, holding up for the camera his favorite photo of himself for the world to see. Filmed in the U.K., Hungary, and Croatia, Lee is one of the most profound films of the year, so crammed with information and revelation that I cannot wait to see it again.

ONE LIFE

A triumph of equally moving value was One Life, the amazing true story of Sir Nicholas Winton (featuring another triumphant centerpiece performance by Anthony Hopkins)—a mild-mannered London stockbroker who enjoyed a privileged life until 1938, when he read the news of the impending war and what was happening to hundreds of homeless Jewish children in Prague, arrested, and facing annihilation by the Reich. Resolving to take whatever action he could, he and his mother Babette (Helena Bonham Carter) joined forces to devote their lives to years of fundraising and fighting bureaucracy to transport children to safety in England.

The story of his struggles and triumphs— framed by the letters and photos discovered when his wife (Lena Olin) asked him to clean out his old files and scrapbooks in the 1980s to make space for a forthcoming grandchild—unravels through 40 years of memory. This culminates in a long-delayed BBC celebration attended by all 6,000 surviving family members of the children he saved, all of whom became a new family to the forgotten Sir Winton until he recently died at age 106.

Many tears were shed in the press preview of this resurrected story and newly relevant film (marking the feature debut of television director James Hawes) about the difference

one person can make in a time of global crisis.

NYAD

In a different context, another deservedly and widely applauded success won me over with the world premiere of NYAD. Annette Bening stars in this spirited, showstopping, and award-caliber achievement as revered marathon swimmer Diana Nyad who, on September 20, 2013—after four exhausting, life-threatening failures and 35 years of retirement from sports to become a sportscaster—swam non-stop for 60 hours and miraculously became the first woman to swim the 103-mile shark-infested waters from Cuba to Miami (without a shark cage) at the age of 64.

The film, boldly co-directed by husbandwife team Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi, frame Nyad's perilous voyage through the Florida Straits with years of facts, but it is the passion and physical ardor of Bening, who does all of her own swimming, and co-star Jodie Foster, as her loyal, dedicated coach and best friend, Bonnie Stoll, who keep the narrative moving, compelled by the courage of the human spirit. Their incredible talents bring Nyad's story to life with overwhelming force.

More about this amazing film when it opens commercially in theaters and Nov. 3 on Netflix. Don't even think of missing this one.

KNOX GOES AWAY

With the strikes subverting jobs and creating cancellations throughout the industry, it's been quite a year for actors turning into directors of their own projects (never a good idea, if you ask me). But it provided TIFF with the opportunity to invite a few artists to promote their films in a category approved by the acting unions.

Best of the batch was Knox Goes Away, a fresh, clever and complicated new twist on crime and psychology. Starring and directed by Michael Keaton, the film is about a sophisticated and highly educated professional hit man named John Knox, diagnosed with a rare neurological disease that hastens demen-

tia and leads to incurable mental collapse. With a prognosis that gives him only a few weeks to live, he starts making plans to tie up loose ends before he "goes away" forever, but his condition worsens when his estranged son (James Marsden) kills his 16-year-old daughter's abusive boyfriend and turns to his Dad to cover up the crime.

With an impossibly short amount of time before his own end, the film follows Knox on his complex rituals, but it's hard to do your old job right when your memory is fading fast. It doesn't matter how many more bodies he has to add to the growing police confusion.

His career is over and Knox is going away for good, so who cares? Marcia Gay Harden and Al Pacino head a stellar supporting cast, and although Keaton has been absent from the screen for a few years, he has forgotten nothing about holding a film together with centrifugal power and precision.

POOLMAN

I had just the opposite reaction to Poolman, an abhorrent gumbo of amateurish drabble that marks the dire directorial debut of Hollywood heart throb Chris Pine, who also wrote a screenplay that appears to have been dictated on a rusty phone with a broken receiver.

He plays a loony pool cleaner in a broken down trailer with grandiose plans to re-design Los Angeles while directing an incomprehensible documentary and writing his daily dementia in fan letters to Erin Brokovich. He goes to bars and orders egg creams with cinnamon sprinkles, believes he's being stalked by a tree, talks to and holds daily conversations with a lizard, and somehow uncovers a plot about city corruption and incest that is nothing more than a rip-off of Chinatown.

The film doesn't make one word of sense, and I'm not exaggerating. As a director, he doesn't know where to put the camera and his visuals include closeups of a bare foot. As a writer his screenplay seems to have been scrawled with purple Crayolas. Almost every line in the script is moronic, but the worst

line of the year has to be "People like me eat people like you. But you're not even an appetizer. You're an amuse bouche."

With long hair down to his navel and an ugly white beard, he even looks like a fool. Think Santa Claus in a bikini.

There was much more, including Ezra, a disappointing film with Robert DeNiro as a grandfather coping with the proper way to raise an autistic child; Sir Ian McKellan in The Critic as a fired London theater critic who commits murder to save his job on the aisle; Jessica Chastain as a lost and desperate member of Alcoholics Anonymous in the dreary, depressing Memory; and 24 vital documentaries about Sylvester Stallone, Paul Simon, the unexplored wilderness of Norway, the private life of the recently deceased spy novelist John LeCarre, the war in Ukraine, the Women's World Cup, and my favorite—a film about mercurial jazz legend Artie Shaw.

ARTIE SHAW: TIME IS ALL

Shaw’s swinging big band music made history and his life was equally syncopated with high drama. (He was married to Lana Turner, Ava Gardner, Jerome Kern's daughter, and Kathleen Windsor, the author of Forever Amber.)

With a fascinating cast of friends and observers including Mel Torme, Helen Forrest, Buddy Rich, and Evelyn Keyes, Artie Shaw: Time is All tackles enough material for several films instead of just one and leaves no chapter unfinished.

So, in retrospect TIFF lived up to its reputation for size, variety, and the promise of "something for everyone."

From a documentary about Sylvester Stallone 47 years after Rocky to a Stanislavski western about syphilis by Viggo Mortensen, you could safely call it a gauge of what to expect at the movies in the coming year. Considering the unprecedented crises that made it one of the most challenging festivals in TIFF history, they did the best they could and provided plenty to write home about. In the end, things may have collapsed at the movies from coast to coast, but at TIFF it was business as usual.

WITHIN FINDING BEAUTY

Everyone wants to feel comfortable in their own skin.

That is the ethos of Dr. Anil Shah MD FACS, a pathfinder in both the surgical and non-surgical realm.

“Giving a person the ability to see their own beauty is the greatest gift I can give,” says Dr. Shah, a clinical associate of surgery and clinical instructor at University of Chicago as well as an assistant professor at New York University. The Illinois native doctor, who operates in his downtown Chicago location, also notes how important it is that he treats his patients in a full circle of wellness which includes non-surgical aesthetic procedures and preventative treatments. For Dr. Anil Shah his patients are paramount to everything that he does which is why introducing his second location, Aesthetic Skin Winnetka, was so important to him.

SUZANNE LOPEZ has been appointed as Abbott Academy Director of the Joffrey Academy of Dance, Official School of The Joffrey Ballet. Lopez takes over this new role after 19 years as a Company Artist, 14 years as Academy Faculty, and most recently, seven years as Rehearsal Director. Educated by Joffrey Ballet co-founders Robert Joffrey and Gerald Arpino, Lopez intends to embrace Joffrey's founding principles into the curriculum of the Academy and its Pre-Professional and Trainee Programs, leading it into a new area of excellence and elevating its reputation as a premier institution for dance education. As Abbott Academy Director of the Joffrey Academy of Dance, Lopez leads the growth and development of the Academy as a world-class destination for students, implementing curricula and cutting-edge artistic programming for every Academy age and division. Lopez recently set aside her many duties to share how she stays current in the dance world.

#ON MY NIGHTSTAND

In anticipation of the Joffrey's 68th season opener, I am refamiliarizing myself with Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. I have been trying to read more from female authors, so this book serves two purposes. The Joffrey Ballet is bringing an acclaimed adaptation of the iconic novel to the Lyric Opera stage this October. It will be a full-length, captivating performance. I especially can't wait to see how the Joffrey artists interpret this work and witness it all come together on stage.

#ON MY MOBILE

In my new role as Academy Abbott Director, I am focusing on the Joffrey Academy of Dance's social media platforms to keep our audience engaged and up to date on class offerings. It has been a fun process, and seeing our social media presence rapidly grow is exciting. You can follow us on Instagram @joffreyacademy.

#IN MY EARBUDS

Lately, I have been listening to a lot of Taylor Swift with my daughter. We attended her concert together at Soldier Field this summer, and it was such a blast. It was especially fun to see one of the Joffrey Academy’s 2023 Winning Works choreographers, Kameron Saunders, up there on stage with Taylor. A highlight of the year!

TINY SCOOTERS

Scooter enthusiasts have heard the legends of the Motocompo, a compact folding scooter sold by Honda in the early '80s. It was the tiniest scooter made by the Japanese brand but had limited availability and was only sold in Japan. Enter the 21st century and a desire for ultra-convenient transportation options that are fun, flexible, and good for the planet. Earlier this month, Honda announced that it was bringing back an all-electric version of the concept with the Motocompacto. According to Honda, the 2023 itineration is “designed to invoke freedom, ensure joy for the next generation, and take the boundaries off its riders.” Available for $995 at a Honda or Acura dealership near you.

Why do adults get to have all the fun? The new Bentley 6-in1 Stroller/Trike now brings the British panache of the Bentley brand to a playground near you. Designed in collaboration with the iconic Bentley Motor Company, this head-turning set of wheels is designed to grow with your child.

Watch it transform from a stylish stroller for your 6-month-old to the ultimate tricycle for your 5-year-old. Featuring a premium build and an ageless design, this innovative creation is a family heirloom in the making. Available for $499 at bentleytrike.com.

SEWN TOGETHER

Former dressmaker and Community House theater costume maker Carol Hansen lauds the blend of old and new at the highly anticipated Antiques+Modernism Show in Winnetka.

Carol Hansen was 12 years old and living in Racine, Wisconsin, when she used a treadle sewing machine to make her first piece of clothing.

“My father (Gordon Edmonston) was very supportive of my interest in fashion, so he bought me that machine, pedal and all,” the 80-year-old Hansen, now a Winnetkan, says.

“I made a plaid skirt for myself.”

That skirt won’t be an item for sale November 3 to 5 at the 51st Antiques+Modernism Show at the Community House in Winnetka. Some things are priceless.

But Hansen could give you 100 reasons, at least, to check out the array of unique, rare wares—from local, national and international dealers—at the benefit presented by the Community House’s Woman’s Board. Ranging in styles from classic to modern, the show features exquisite home furnishings and accessories, artwork, clothing, jewelry and more from dozens of dealers.

It’s the ultimate destination for interior designers, treasure hunters, and collectors alike. The show’s snappy slogan is, “ See It. Like It. Buy It!”

All proceeds from the show go to the Community House, which first opened its doors in 1911. It remains one of the few privately funded community houses in the United States. Each year more than 250,000 visits are made to take advantage of educational, social, and recreational opportunities for people of all ages.

“The show’s biggest draw, to me, is its combination of wonderful antiques and modern design, a blend of old and new offerings that appeals to so many,” says Hansen, who, during her years as a sewgood seamstress along the North Shore, was known as “The Dressmaker on Tower Road.”

Hansen joined the Community House in 1982, costuming the theater’s adult casts, and became a member of it six years later. The Woman’s Board—of which Hansen served as president for two terms—presented an annual Antiques Show in the spring and an annual Modernism Show in the fall before the enterprising group of women chose to marry the events and stage the inaugural Antiques+Modernism in 2009.

She raised two daughters—Tari and Tania, —from a previous marriage.

Her stint costuming adult theater cast members at the Community House spanned 12 years, ending in 1994.

“My first act—no pun intended—as a costume assistant was to go backstage to help an actor with a quick costume change,” recalls Hansen, a former Glencoe resident. “I didn’t know there were five steps to get backstage, so I stumbled, slipped, and let out a squeal.

“I later found out the audience heard my

The misadventure didn’t lead to “it’s curtains at the Community House” for Hansen. Just the opposite. She has thought the world of the welcoming, bustling place for 41 years—and counting.

“Our community is fortunate to have something as special and as accessible as the Community House,” Hansen says. “There is so much to do there, from taking all kinds of classes to working out at the fitness center to using spaces for business meetings and social events.

“I celebrated my 70th birthday there.”

In addition to devoting most of her volunteerism to the Community House, Hansen loves scrapbooking (she’s produced 70 books in 10 years) and collecting hats. Most of her vintage lids were popular in the early 1990s.

And her passion for fashion remains white-hot.

“Would you like to know something else about me?” she asks. “I’ve been a Minnie Mouse fan for a long time. She makes me smile.”

So does anything that has to do with the Antiques+Modernism Show.
