“LUXURY HOME LISTERS”
Jody Dickstein and her son Michael Dickstein, have a keen ability to make clients feel comfortable in their homes. Specializing in homes ranging from $500,000 to $10 million, The Dickstein Group is not only highly skilled at negotiating, but are expert stagers and available around the clock.
How do you differentiate yourselves from the competition?
We have the ability to help our sellers and buyers with design ideas and staging to sell. We are always available for our clients. We love to negotiate the best price for them and keep the market time short. We always accompany our showings; we are not fans of lock boxes on a client’s home. It’s a stressful time for the buyers and sellers and we let them know, “relax, we will do all the work.”
Areas of the home one should invest in?
Kitchen, baths, and mechanical updates. Outside curb appeal is also important. Make it clean, light up the landscape, plant some pretty flowers, and paint the front door.

SURGERY IN THE SUMMER?
Surgery, whether medical or cosmetic, is often a significant event in one’s life. While factors like personal health, type of surgery, and postoperative care play important roles, there’s a misconception that the time of year might affect recovery outcomes. Let’s dive into this myth and uncover the realities behind surgery recovery, regardless of the season.
Reveal the Truth: The notion that the time of year significantly impacts surgery recovery
is a common misconception. While it’s true that weather conditions and seasonal activities can influence daily life or activities, they don’t have a direct correlation with surgical outcomes. Recovery timelines and success rates are primarily determined by medical factors such as the complexity of the procedure, the patient’s overall health, and adherence to post-operative instructions.
Medical Factors Trump the Season: Your body’s ability to heal and recover from surgery is largely influenced by internal
factors rather than what season it may be. Factors such as age, pre-existing medical conditions, and immune system play crucial roles in determining the pace and success of recovery. Surgeons consider these factors when assessing a patient’s candidacy for surgery and developing personalized recovery plans.
Myth Debunked: While the time of year may seem like an important factor in surgery recovery, its not a factor. Medical factors such as the type of surgery, overall health, and post-operative care practices have far greater significance in determining recovery outcomes. It is true that the sun will keep scars more red if not covered, but although it may be colder in the winter, the sun is always present. Scars can be covered with sunscreen all year round and most of the time, elective scars are well hidden and covered anyway. So if summer is the right time for you to take some time and recover, then get it done!

A self-proclaimed spiritual trailblazer, Northbrook’s OLGA GILMAN exudes an infectious zeal for life. Reflecting on her journey, Gilman stands as a mosaic of experiences—undaunted by adversity, deeply rooted in her heritage, and eager for the next chapter of growth and adventure. Born in Ukraine, she lived in Vienna and Rome during her immigration journey to the United States. Since settling in the U.S., she has moved more than a dozen times. Each transition and new horizon deepened her gratitude for her parents’ sacrifices and fueled her appetite for change and personal evolution. Following the completion of her nursing undergraduate studies, Gilman pursued graduate education in dermatology, culminating in a specialized fellowship in aesthetic medicine. A fusion of her passions for art and science led to the creation of her aesthetic clinic, Haevum. Grounded in a lineage of artistic expression, from her grandfather’s brush strokes to her father’s passion for the arts, Gilman infuses her work with a blend of artistry and compassion, empowering others to embrace their unique beauty. In her personal life, Gilman finds solace and joy in the company of her partner of 15 years, Michael, alongside their children, Matthew and Della, and their spirited Miniature Schnauzer, Johnny. Gilman takes a break from life’s adventures to share her city and shore favorites with Sheridan Road.

What’s on the horizon? I’m diving deeper into travel photography. Professionally, Haevum is set to redefine aesthetic dermatology by centering on individuality and self-love. Mantra? Art in every detail, science in every result. It captures the essence of my approach to aesthetic dermatology and life—meticulous, innovative, and always striving for synergy. Best grooming tip? Consistency is key. Guilty pleasure? A dark, witty British comedy that most people would find too dry. Favorite foods? My palate is a testament to my journey—eclectic, curious, and always ready for the next culinary adventure. Music you love? My musical taste ranges from the profound rhythms of shamanic drumming to the lyrical flow of French rap, and the timeless elegance of Vivaldi. Best advice ever given to you? Two pieces of advice hold a special place in my heart. My father taught me the significance of hard work, consistency, and unwavering self-belief in realizing one’s dreams. Meanwhile, my grandfather imparted the wisdom that whatever task I undertook should be regarded as the most important work in the world. Best advice you’ve given? To see oneself through a lens of empathy and understanding. I tell my patients, my children, and remind myself
to embrace our stories, our scars, and our strengths as parts of a beautiful, unique whole. Earliest memory? Developing photographs with my father in our makeshift darkroom in Ukraine. Those moments of creation and connection laid the foundation for my lifelong love of art and beauty. When you wake up, you? I take a moment to feel gratitude for my journey from an immigrant child facing an identity crisis to a proud business owner and mother. Before bed, you? After a day of dedicating myself to my patients, I cherish the simplicity of coloring with my daughter and the warmth of my son’s humor. What’s on your bookshelf? A thought-provoking collection that challenges reality and perception, with authors like George Orwell, Kurt Vonnegut, and Haruki Murakami, alongside spiritually enlightening works by David R. Hawkins, Gabor Maté, and Sam Harris. You can’t live without? The unwavering love and support of my family, friends, and patients. Their stories of strength and resilience fuel my passion and purpose daily. Love to escape to? Anywhere my camera takes me. Advice you would give to your younger self? Trust yourself. All the things you feel you must hide now are the ones you will be most proud of later.
ON THE SHORE IN THE CITY
Your style is? An extension of my personality— avant-garde and unapologetically me, a far cry from the traditional white lab coat. Can’t leave the house without? My phone (it’s a love/hate relationship) and a protein shake. Transportation? My 17-year-old son. I have a personal chauffeur with a killer sense of humor. Win-win! Driving music? My Spotify playlist is as eclectic as my interests. Current favorites include Masego’s “Prone,” Cameron Grey’s “I Want It All,” MARO’s “We’ve Been Loving In Silence,” Fhin’s “Quand On Arrive En Ville,” and Gilsons’ “Love Love.” Place to eat? Anywhere that dares to innovate and surprise. My favorites are House 406 by Jennifer Eisen and Eryn Cisneros, Longitud315 by Chef Tony Castillo, and NaKorn by Mina Sudsaard and Sam Rattanopas. Shop? Exploring vintage gems for exterior design, art, and fashion pieces is a pleasure for my soul. Some of my favorite places to visit locally are Prairieland Art & Antiques, Heritage Trail Mercantile, and SIGNATURE OF ART (my father owns it, so I get an ‘I love you’ discount). Best thing about the Shore? It’s a place where art and history are treasured, and culture and community are appreciated. Worst thing about the Shore? The occasional underestimation of its cultural depth. The perfect day is? It begins by losing myself in an audiobook, exploring new ideas or untold stories. The day is filled with meaningful conversations with clients and friends. As evening falls, I’m at home with my family, sharing laughs and stories over dinner, savoring the simple yet profound moments that make life beautiful.
Your style is? It’s a fusion of daring and modesty, challenging traditional expectations and redefining the narrative of femininity. Transportation? Walking, immersing myself in the city’s energy and pace. Driving music? I’m all about the old-school hits that transport me back to my teenage years. It’s a soundtrack of freedom and nostalgia, from Santana’s soulful guitar riffs to the Fugees’ smooth rhymes, interspersed with Tupac’s powerful verses, No Doubt’s energetic anthems, and Alanis Morissette’s raw emotion. Place to eat? Favorite spots are EL Ideas by Chef Phillip Foss and Moody Tongue by Jared Rouben. Shop? Places that blur the lines between fashion and art, where pieces celebrate self-expression. I love visiting Jayson Home, Salvage One, and Warehouse 55. Best thing about the City? Its relentless pulse and diversity. Worst thing about the City? The pace can be overwhelming, a reminder to find moments of stillness and reflection amidst the hustle. The perfect day is? A solo staycation at The Publishing House Bed and Breakfast, whose owners unknowingly inspired the ethos of Haevum. It’s a sacred time for recharging. My day would start with a leisurely morning, absorbing art and history at a museum. Meal-hopping across the city savoring the rich flavors of uni at Juno, indulging in the innovative dishes at EL Ideas, and sweetening the journey with Chicago-style gelato from Black Dog Gelato. Finally, I’d lose myself in the pages of a captivating book. Before sleep claims me, I’d take a quick peek at Instagram—because what’s life without a little guilty pleasure? It’s all about the balance, after all.

DREAM DRIVE
Our publisher takes a McLaren Artura on the road for a test run. Find out how this vintage sports car aficionado got converted to the thrill of a new hybrid supercar.
WORDS BY JOHN CONATSER
Ihave a confession to make. In my years of loving cars (which has been since birth), my brand of choice has been the vintage—Jaguars, Lotus, Porsche (think Esprit, 911s, the iconic air cooled, and the unmistakable super cars of the ‘80s when I was a teenager).
But when our media partner, McLaren Automotive, presented me with the opportunity to take the new McLaren Artura for a glorious long weekend “test drive,” I was hardly going to turn down the opportunity (and this was before McLaren’s recent Formula 1 win at the Miami Grand Prix).
From the moment I sat inside this turbocharged dream machine, I was hooked. The curves and winding wonders of Sheridan Road will never be the same. It was truly one of the best driving experiences of my life.
What’s amazing is that its twin-turbocharged V6 engine is paired with an electric motor to provide 671 horsepower—easily taking you from zero to 60 in less than three seconds. As an aircooled Porsche-phile driving an electric car for the first time, I was shocked to find myself driving in electric mode the majority of the time.
Curious to know more about what was under that hood, I did a little digging on the history of this legendary race car brand and what makes the Artura so special.
I found out that Bruce McLaren founded his eponymous car company in 1963, producing his first model—the McLaren M1A—within the first year. He made just 24 models before coming out with the M1B, which entered the Can-Am Cham-
pionship and claimed 43 victories (besting its arch-rival, my beloved Porsche). Two years later, McLaren created its first Formula 1 entry, which debuted at the Monaco Grand Prix.
From there, the story grew even more compelling. Bruce McLaren died in a car accident in 1970, bringing the company to a halt. Fortunately, it was picked up by an entrepreneur and continued evolving. McLaren drivers went on to win the Formula 1 world driver’s championship several times before the company set its sights on creating a car for the likes of drivers like me—a road-legal vehicle capable of going over 200 miles per hour.
Flash forward to 2024 and the McLaren Artura I had the pleasure of driving. This high-performance, hybrid supercar is sculpted to harness airflow to the max. Everything about its aerodynamic design is light as a feather, gliding like air on the open road.
I was equally impressed with the interior, which has all the luxury features you’d want in a fine automobile paired with the power of a racing machine.
If you’re lucky enough to purchase one, ask your McLaren Automotive dealer about the 60th Anniversary Options. From paint finishes that evoke the legendary Triple Crown (a victory held only by McLaren) to emotive “Speedy Kiwi” branded elements and pedals, it’s the ultimate way to pay tribute to a man who sparked an automotive revolution.
With that, happy driving. See you on Sheridan Road.

THE TRUTH ABOUT KETAMINE
Despite recent headlines, Ketamine remains a highly safe and effective treatment in clinical settings.
WORDS BY TERRY R. YORMARK II
The old saying, “There is no such thing as bad press” may hold true most of the time, but unfortunately that hasn’t yet proved to be the case with current stories regarding Ketamine. Unfortunately, Ketamine came up in a toxicology report in a recent terrible Hollywood tragedy and many in the media negligently created a false narrative and ran with it. Shocking, right? The “good” part about all of this press is that the dialogue around Ketamine has gone mainstream and those seeking education from reliable sources is at an all-time high.
Ketamine was first studied in the 1960s as a safer alternative to traditional anesthetics and was first used by anesthesiologists in the 1970s. To this day, Ketamine is the most commonly prescribed anesthetic globally and on the World Health Organization Essential Medication List. Ketamine causes minimal respiratory depression and does not impair the cough reflex which many other drugs do. In 2019, the FDA approved Ketamine for treatment resistant depression, which has saved countless lives.
Ketamine is to be administered in a relaxing, spa-like environment by a licensed medical professional either by normal IV or nasal injection through a product named Spravato. Individual sessions typically last between 45 and 90 minutes (depending
on dosing) with the peak Ketamine experience lasting a couple of hours. A day or two after treatment, while the body is still experiencing the effects of the treatment, it’s best to meet with a psychiatrist to better process the experience which aids in the healing process. Ketamine often opens new pathways in the mind and as a result it’s during these one-on-one sessions that often meaningful breakthroughs occur.
As with so many other things in life, finding the right partner makes all the difference. With Ketamine, choosing the right treatment center sets the patient at ease and greatly increases the chances of positive outcomes. Brain Health Restoration of Illinois (BHR) was founded on a very simple, but often lost, principle of putting the patient first. BHR believes so strongly in Ketamine education and sharing the TRUTH about Ketamine that we are happy to supply you with a book, free of charge, so you can begin making decisions for your mental health based on facts and your personal needs, not from the latest Hollywood breaking news.
For your free Ketamine book please email info@BHRIllinois.com and visit BHRIllinois.com to learn more about the newest premier mental health clinic in the Chicago area. Brain Health Restoration of Illinois is located at One National Plaza, 1111 N. Plaza Drive, Suite 101, in Schaumburg.

Contemporary art isn’t always easy to take. Even the most adventurous gallery-goer has been stumped by something that looks more like an accident than a composition. Yet, paintings by Kenilworth’s Adam Siegel are proof that powerful art doesn’t need to transgress to stimulate one’s imagination and challenge the conscience.
Siegel has been an artist all his life. The son of noted photographer Arthur Siegel, who studied under László Moholy-Nagy at The New Bauhaus at the Illinois Institute of Technology, Siegel grew up in Lincoln Park. His father and mother, Irene, an artist herself, often welcomed fellow creatives and intellectuals into the house, such as architect Mies van der Rohe. Even at an early age, encountering the cultural elite of the city made Siegel aware of “what it’s like to be a fully developed personality with a point of view.”
While his father “very purposefully did not” teach him about photography, he did let him wander those get-togethers with a

Leica camera around his neck. And when grad students came over to present their theses, Siegel stood and listened over their shoulders. Plus, it didn’t hurt to have Ansel Adams’ most famous image—Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico—hanging on the wall outside his bedroom. As a teen at Francis Parker, Siegel was big on track and field. Then he changed course. “I was putting a lot of time into running and suddenly decided I should put that energy into something else,” he recalls. “So, I decided to go photograph every day and take that as seriously as I had running. I ended up doing a series on the beach, of people and objects. After developing the images in the darkroom, I went back to the beach and buried the prints under the sand, leaving parts of them exposed and re-photographed them.”
Siegel got a degree in Japanese studies at Oberlin College, spending a year in the country, absorbing every aspect of its culture and traditions. He traces his own singular aesthetic to that formative experience. “In Japan, you have basic elements—rock,
bamboo, wood, and paper. It’s all about the artful arrangement of those formative elements and how those base materials can represent the equivalent parts of our psyche. To this day that is pretty much how my work is built, it’s the relationship between basic elements and how they refer to archetypal qualities in nature and in ourselves. Pattern, color, shape, and material quality are related to how we feel about ourselves and how we respond to things, consciously and unconsciously.”
Over time, Siegel—who had his first solo show on Michigan Avenue at age 19—began to produce larger and larger works. “This was back when we were still working solely with film, and I came to the realization that I didn’t have the equipment to execute the works as large as I wanted them,” he shares. “I felt the medium was fighting my conception. Having to develop the images in the darkroom deprived me of the kind of immediacy of process I was looking for. So, I made a very innocent decision and switched to painting. But it took more than 15 years for me

to feel as comfortable with paint as I had with photography.” In recent years, he created a 9/11 memorial in partnership with the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Northwestern Specialists for Women clinic acquired 75 of his paintings and photographs, and his work was featured in HBO’s Succession. Additionally, he collaborated with noted chef and restaurateur Grant Achatz on a pop-up restaurant titled The Progression, which included 27 large-scale works. Roister Restaurant, the chef’s latest outing, features a single large work of Siegel’s in its main dining room. Today, color and scale are central to Siegel’s work. The pieces he is showing at Winnetka’s Anne Loucks Gallery and at The Art Center Highland Park are the latest manifestations of his deep commitment to creating work that inhabits space as certainly as our own bodies and that functions as a portal to understanding beyond our immediate actuality. Additionally, Siegel will be featuring works from his Panorama series incorporating antique landscape images combined with his penchant for bold colorful geometries. “Encountering color,” notes Siegel, “generates changes in the viewer, chemical changes in the blood that give you a certain feeling. And large canvases can be all-embracing, like a sunset. They become equivalents for our experience of nature.”
There’s something to be said for getting lost in a work of art. And these are works to wander in. We may not know where we are going or where the journey will take us. But as Robert Louis Stevenson knew, sometimes, “It is better to travel hopefully than to arrive.”

ON HIS NIGHTSTAND
“I am really enjoying The Optimist by David Coggins. The author does a great job of casually telling stories that involve travel, exploration, love of family, and culture, all connected with the general theme of fly fishing. Another great read is Headwaters by Dylan Tomine. A favorite magazine and one you’ll always find on my coffee table is the Adventure Journal. When I need inspiration, I pick up The Invention of Nature: Alexander von Humboldt’s New World by Andrea Wulf. One of our signature watch models is named after Humboldt—a legend amongst legends and considered by Darwin himself to be one of the ‘greatest scientific travelers’ of all time. This book does a great job of exploring how Humboldt changed the way we understand the natural world.”
ON HIS MOBILE
“First thing in the morning I scope out three things: bbc.com, how the Swiss Franc is doing compared to the U.S. Dollar, and The Morning Brew. During the day, I check in with friends and followers on social media. There’s a great community of watch folks on Instagram, and we’re always sharing photos and chatting about what’s going on in the industry. There are the standard accounts that every watch lover should follow: @wornandwound, @hodinkee, and @fratellowatches. But the most fun accounts to follow are the ones run by individuals with a creative eye. Two of my favorites are @wh1chw4tch and @lydiaswatches. An unrelated favorite is @Discommon—Neil Ferrier is one of a kind.”
IN HIS EARBUDS
“My Spotify account probably thinks I’m stuck in the ‘90s with Dave Matthews Band, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and the like on repeat. Sprinkle in some Duke Ellington, Muse, and whatever my kids are listening to, and you’ve got my number. I do love to throw in some new music from Drew Holcomb, a fellow Tennessean and owner of an Oak & Oscar. He’s got a deep, genuinely soulful voice that is just fantastic. And it’s not always music in my ear. I love listening to podcasts on my drive to work or any road trip. You’ll find me listening to a fly fishing (surprise!) podcast called Troutbitten and a watch industry podcast by friends of mine called Openwork: Inside the Watch Industry.”

THE BEAUTY OF BAJA
Kimpton Mas Olas Resort & Spa is an adults-only luxury resort that raises the bar on responsible development. Guests are invited to indulge their senses with activities designed to foster personal enrichment, growth, and wellbeing while connecting to nature and each other.

ature’s beauty can be profoundly transformative. Take Kimpton Mas Olas, a resort revealing a new level of sustainable beachfront luxury located in the artist’s haven of Todos Santos—just one hour north of Cabo San Lucas.
Nestled between Mexico’s Sierra Laguna Mountains and the Pacific Ocean, the 30-acre resort features 1,100 feet of unspoiled ocean footage. Designed by Mexican architect Alejandra Templeton of Indigo Añil, the resort’s connection to nature is reinforced by its nine interconnected gardens, two farms, and a citrus orchard.
The resort team’s dedication to the pursuit of self-exploration and careful curation of every detail was evident from the moment of arrival when we were encouraged to open the resort’s immense, carved door to “physically” begin our journey. Upon entering the open-air courtyard, we were greeted by a profusion of color— courtesy of the vivid flowers and vibrant local artwork—that inspired a childlike joy. The artwork includes a Madonna where it is suggested that you set the intentions of your visit. Leaving the courtyard, we entered an endemic garden—Baja’s largest. Here guests choose between two paths—one made of sand and the other of brick. We chose the winding sand path making our way through thousands of indigenous desert flora. At the center of this garden stands an ancient torote tree. Here guests pause for a moment of reflection before continuing on to their accommodations and passing a beautiful stand of manicured neem trees that serve as a natural insect repellent.
Entering our second-floor suite, we were immediately enthralled with the boho chic décor. Design details like the Talavera bathroom tiling handmade in Tlaquepaque, steel headboards with leather tassels made in Chihuahua, and fabrics sourced from Tijuana—all custom-made for the resort and purchased fair trade—take one on a visual trip through Mexico. The favorite part of our suite, in addition to the second-floor outdoor entertaining area, was the third-floor terrace with an enormous, circular dais. Many mornings began on the terrace savoring coffee courtesy of our in-suite French press while listening to birdsong and enjoying the panoramic views. In the evenings, we sipped wine beneath a blanket of stars while listening to the ocean’s roar.
From the terrace, we noticed the resort’s 12 oceanfront villas built into beachfront sand dunes. As each private villa contains a plunge pool and private beach access, we definitely discovered our next visit’s accommodations.

All reservations include a range of complimentary activities encouraging travelers to authentically experience Baja. These include sunrise meditations, yoga, sustainability tours, gardening workshops, and aromatherapy at the apothecary. I highly recommend diving into the activities as each is instructive and soothing to the soul.
Shortly after our arrival, we were summoned to the elaborate garden—Kimpton Mas Olas’ heart and soul—for a floral welcome where we cut flowers for in-room bouquets. Post-cutting, we were guided in the arranging and tying of our little treasures. During this exercise, our host explained the meaning of each flower and observed that guests’ selections often reflect their personalities. I was thrilled to learn my arrangement stood for love, generosity, and kindness.
At the garden’s center stands an intricate conservatory that doubles as an artful abstract sculpture. Here we engaged in a cacao ceremony inspired by ancient Mayan traditions designed to balance the mind, body, and soul. This meditative experience
combines music, intention setting, chanting, cacao sipping, and incense burning to create an extraordinary celebration. Reflecting on this experience still stirs an incredible feeling of joy.
Just next door, we visited the apothecary. Here we were educated about the medicinal properties of various oils. For example, clove and sweet orange facilitate sleep, tea tree serves as an antibiotic, bergamot helps the immune system, and grapefruit regulates blood pressure and inflammation. We each mixed an assortment of oils, creating our very own vessel to take home.
One morning we visited the pristine chicken coop to select eggs for our huevos rancheros. A few hours later, we visited the farm to forage for the ingredients to make hearty salads. There was something so satisfying about gathering ingredients with my own hands—with each bite, I could recall the vine that once held the tomato or the time I toppled over trying to extricate a radish from the rich soil.
The culinary program at Kimpton Mas Olas is designed to demonstrate the connection between nature and food. At its helm is the globally renowned and Michelin-experienced Chef Sandro Falbo. Chef uses native ingredients from the ocean and surrounding communities together with the bounty of its nine interconnected gardens, farms, citrus orchards, and beehives (80 percent of the resort’s food and beverage is sourced within 50 miles of the hotel).
Kimpton Mas Olas features three restaurants. Botánica is set among the gardens and orchards and offers the ultimate in farm-to-table dining. One evening we enjoyed a meal with Chef where each course was inspired by fire and smoke. While

Botánica’s wood fire oven gave the air a hint of smoky earthiness, wooden boxes were placed at each setting. When opened, a cloud of smoke emerged revealing an edible masterpiece. As Chef noted on several occasions, “Guests eat with their eyes first.” No matter how full you might be, don’t skip dessert—each is not only a work of art but is simply divine.
Centro is an all-day dining spot offering a selection of classic Mexican dishes that are brilliant in both color and taste. Perched on the second floor, Centro has an elevated view of the ocean and gray whales often serve as mealtime entertainment. With a view of two pools, a cocktail bar, the ocean, and the aforementioned whales, I enjoyed forkfuls of The Baja Super Food Salad, a generous mix of root and vine veggies, cactus, crispy corn, chickpeas, avocado, pomegranate, and sunflower seeds bathed lightly in a fresh hibiscus dressing.
Kahal is an oceanfront seafood restaurant. Hugging a sweeping infinity pool and outfitted with décor designed to resemble the inside of a seashell, Kahal is elegant and sexy. By day, cenote-style Jacuzzis and 14 floating double-loungers create a beach club atmosphere. By dusk, fire pits cater to intimate evening conversation over cocktails while the sun descends brilliantly “into” the ocean. The Baja sunsets are some of the most spectacular that I have ever seen.
The resort also offers special dining experiences like the taco wine pairing we enjoyed while seated at a long table in the Citrus Allée. One can’t imagine the number and varieties of this traditional Mexican dish—fish, pork, meat, veggie ... My favorite taco had a hearty leaf in place of the typical shell. It was an epicurean delight served along with the finest of locally sourced white and red wines.
To work off all these glorious calories, visit the 25,000-squarefoot spa and wellness center where services are rooted in nature’s wisdom. For my massage, I was guided to a circular palapa called a “treatment nest” outfitted with a private outdoor shower. The 80-minute Rosemary Massage designed for boosting the immune
system while stimulating your senses was exactly what the doctor ordered!
From sunrise yoga and sound baths to an array of spa experiences and exercise machines, you could spend your entire vacation in the spa’s healing space. Don’t miss the hydrotherapy circuit featuring an ice fountain, experience shower, steam room, and Himalayan salt sauna (loved)!
Kimpton Mas Olas’ endless luxury is further enhanced by all the resort team is doing to be kind to our planet. The resort avoids single-use plastics, uses dark sky lighting, processes seawater into fresh drinking water at the onsite desalination plant, relies upon a sprawling solar farm for its electrical needs, and plans to become a zero-waste property that exists “off the grid.”
Embrace the joy of traveling well at the luxurious Kimpton Mas Olas, a destination devoted to nature and connection, in the profoundly spiritual setting of Baja Mexico. ¡Feliz Viaje!

BOURBON + ALE
CHEDDAR SPREAD WITH ROSEMARY THINS
SHERIDAN ROAD 64 RECIPE
WORDS, RECIPE, AND PHOTOGRAPHY BY MONICA KASS ROGERS
RECIPE
Picnic season is finally here! There is no more picturesque picnicking spot than Ravinia, and this cheese and cracker duo makes snacking under the stars that much tastier. A blend of sharp and smoked cheddar cheeses with ale and a splash of bourbon, our creamy spread has a rich flavor that deepens the day after you make it. Rosemary herbed cracker thins made with nutty whole wheat flour are the perfect portage for the cheddar spread. The dough is easy to handle, and you can alter the yield by changing the size of the crackers as you please. (Do roll it out until nearly transparent for a wonderfully crispy cracker.) Add some dippable veggies and charcuterie meats, a lantern to light your picnic, and let the music begin.
Makes 4 cups cheddar spread; 5 dozen 1 1/2 x 5-inch cracker thins
FOR THE CRACKERS
• 1 1/4 cups all-purpose white flour
• 1/2 cup whole wheat flour
• 1/4 cup olive oil
• 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
• 2 tablespoons finely minced fresh rosemary leaves, stems discarded
FOR THE BOURBON + ALE CHEDDAR SPREAD
• 1/2 large yellow onion, finely chopped
• 2 teaspoons olive oil
• 14 ounces extra sharp cheddar cheese, finely shredded, divided into two bowls
• 4 ounces smoked cheddar cheese, finely shredded, divided into two bowls
• 8 ounces cream cheese, softened, divided in half
• 12-ounce bottle of your favorite ale, divided in half
• 2 tablespoons bourbon, divided in half
• 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
• 1/4 teaspoon salt
• 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
• 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
• 2 tablespoons paprika
• 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
MAKE CRACKER DOUGH
Line half-sheet baking pan with parchment paper. Set aside. Combine cracker ingredients in a large, shallow bowl and stir until mass gathers into a ball. Knead for a few minutes until dough is smooth. Dough will be soft and very easy to work with. Form dough into a ball, leave at the center of the bowl, and cover with a kitchen towel to rest while you make the spread.
MAKE SPREAD
NOTE: The cheese recipe needs to be made in two parts as all of the cheese won’t fit in the processor at once. In a small skillet over medium-low heat, add the 2 teaspoons olive oil and diced onion. Cook, stirring occasionally, until onion is very soft and caramelized. In a food processor, place half of the cream cheese, 1/2 of each grated cheddar cheese, and 1/2 of the cooked onion. Process until incorporated. With processor running, slowly add half of the ale and half of the bourbon. Stop and scrape down sides of the
bowl. Process again. Add half of each of the spices and process again until smooth. Remove this 1/2 batch of the cheese spread into a mixing bowl. Repeat the processing steps with the remaining cheese, ale, bourbon, and spices. Remove to the mixing bowl with the first batch of cheese spread and stir well. Place spread into two, 2-cup cheese crocks. Refrigerate.
BAKE CRACKERS
With oven rack in center position, preheat oven to 425 degrees. Cut dough ball into four portions. Shape each into a flat rectangle. Set aside three of these wrapped in plastic. On a smooth surface, roll remaining portion until very, very thin. Using a sharp knife, cut into 1 1/2 inch x 4-inch crackers. (You can alter the shape and size of the crackers to suit your fancy.) Lift and place each on parchment-lined half-sheet pan. Bake for 10 minutes, until browned at the edges. Remove from oven. Repeat with the remaining dough. Crackers will curl just slightly on the sides while baking, making them perfect for scooping the cheese.
TO SERVE
Serve cheese spread with rosemary cracker thins and your choice of raw veggies and cured meats.

84-foot-long gallery
hen New York newspaper publisher Horace Greeley urged ambitious young men to “Go West” in 1865, they didn’t have to travel all the way to California to make their fortunes.
Massachusetts-born Marshall Field and Virginian Cyrus McCormick had already set up shop in Chicago and many more followed before the turn of the century, including meatpacker Gustavus Swift and railroad magnate Charles Yerkes. Clayton Mark was just a teenager when his family relocated to Evanston from Pennsylvania in 1872, but like the movers and shakers before him, he went on to establish himself on the Chicago scene as the founder of the Mark Manufacturing Company, a leading producer of steel pipe. And like so many of his peers, Mark built himself a stately home on the North Shore—999 Lake Road in Lake Forest.
Designed by Howard Van Doren Shaw, the architect of choice for well-off Chicagoans seeking a substantial place in the “country,” the 1914 Clayton Mark house was erected on land purchased
from grain elevator titan, Ebenezer Buckingham, whose daughter, art collector and philanthropist Kate Buckingham, gifted Buckingham Fountain to the city of Chicago as a memorial to her brother, Clarence. Set on a bluff overlooking Lake Michigan with more than 400 feet of lake frontage, the house—as architect and author Stuart Cohen remarks in Inventing the New American House: Howard Van Doren Shaw, Architect—is “part Italian palazzo and part Prairie School.”
Mark’s previous home on Deerpath Road had burned to the ground in 1912 and he was determined that his new residence would be as fireproof as possible. Built of brick and stone, it incorporated two fire hoses stored in special closets that were connected to a water supply in the attic. The ground floor of the house was anchored by an 84-foot-long gallery, which opened to handsome and generously proportioned public spaces, including a dining room, billiard room, library, and living room. Clayton and Anna Mark had nine children, and while most were grown by the time the couple moved in, there was always a place for them in the ten-bedroom residence. Built at a time when large homes were

fully staffed, the house included five bedrooms for servants. The head gardener had his own cottage on the 26-acre property, which also sported a greenhouse, stables, a garage, and two playhouses. A civic leader whose commitments included serving as president of both the Chicago Board of Education and Lake Forest College, Mark relaxed in the city at the Union League Club and in Lake Forest at the Onwentsia Club. When his wife passed away in 1915, he commissioned Shaw to design a family mausoleum in Lake Forest Cemetery. The house on Lake Road remained in the family until 1942 when it was sold to the Henry P. Ishams. The new owners, finding it a tad too big for their needs, removed an entire wing.
The home’s current owners, Ron and Karena Garriques, acquired the Mark property in 2007 and committed themselves to a meticulous restoration of the now 110-year-old structure. They removed dropped ceilings and carpeting, refurbished millwork, sourced period-appropriate furnishings and art, and had the dining room sconces replicated by the Czech company that created the original fixtures.
In addition to making many updates— such as the state-of-the-art kitchen—the couple also deepened the basement to accommodate a basketball court/hockey rink and added an Olympic-size pool. Times have certainly changed since the Mark children would eagerly meet their father at the train station with a horse and carriage. But as 999 Lake Road awaits its next family, it stands as more than just a property; it is a living legacy, a testament to the enduring spirit of excellence and sophistication. With its rich history and unparalleled beauty, this lakefront manor offers a rare opportunity to embrace a lifestyle steeped in luxury and heritage.

VISIONARY DESIGN
DESIGNED TO SELL
Real estate broker Grace Kaage unveils a visionary concept that offers sellers the whole package—a 3D marketing plan with full-service interior design services that give today’s discriminating buyers everything they need to customize the home of their dreams.
WORDS BY SHERRY THOMAS / RENDERINGS COURTESY OF THE KAAGE COMPANY PHOTOGRAPHY BY ERIN KONRATH PHOTOGRAPHY
A1917 French Manor-style home that recently went on the market at 755 Sheridan Road in Winnetka had everything a buyer could want in a North Shore property. With incredible curb appeal and a location two blocks from the village and Tower Beach, Compass’s Lowe Group North Shore listing was ready to dazzle its next owner.
However, even the most turnkey properties are not perfect for every buyer. With that in mind, Grace Kaage’s Lowe Group North Shore—a division of realtor Jeff Lowe’s nationally ranked Lowe Group—was ready to unveil its visionary new collaboration with her design-build firm, The Kaage Company. Using custom 3D design concepts, prospective buyers were able to see a comprehensive range of options to make the home truly their own.
Kaage, a third-generation real estate professional, says that when the 6,000-square-foot property had its first showings, a few people walked through and loved it as is. However, others wanted what The Kaage Company is now able to offer—a full-service interior design plan with prices and 3D visuals that bring it all to life.
“There were people who walked through and said ‘this is great, but I feel like the kitchen needs updating. I’d prefer a more open layout,” explains Kaage, who is currently renovating her own English Tudor home in Winnetka with her developer husband. “And I said ‘well, that’s interesting. The sellers and I discussed this as well and I had our design firm develop an open concept option. Would you like to see it?’.”
All she had to do was hit play on a 3D model that simulated the home’s potential and the prospective buyer was blown away, especially since pricing for a range of options was presented as part of this cutting edge, interactive marketing package.
“Buyers no longer have to imagine their space. We deliver it to them,” explains Kaage. “These 3D models go beyond drawings. Our design concepts are a pathway to construction and can be delivered with material costs, bid pricing, and direct connections to local builders able to execute the concept.”
This ground-breaking initiative to break down barriers between real estate and interior design to deliver a high-end, integrated buying and selling experience stems, in part, from everything Kaage has seen in her real estate career.
“I’ve been in real estate all my life, as was my father before me. I learned the business from him and he had five kids. We all ended up getting into it one way or another—as
agents, developers, or lenders. My grandfather was also a real estate agent,” she says, adding, “We haven’t seen anything like this done before.”
The advantages that The Kaage Company offers are clear. Rather than trying to guess what a prospective buyer might want in a renovation and making big investments before putting a property on the market, sellers can present their homes as-is and let the next owner customize to their taste.
“We are also entering a period of time where buyers are going to be expecting more from their realtors than they ever have before,” says Kaage, referring to both a recent settlement by the National Association of Realtors and evolving millennial homebuying trends. “That latest statistics show that more than 55 percent of homeowners who purchase homes end up renovating at least one area.”
Beyond that, the new endeavor is also on brand for the Kaages and the historic North Shore homes they love to work on and bring back to life.
“We don’t want to see everyone tearing them down. We want to see if we can help create a world where they can be restored,” she adds. “We feel there’s a market for this and are excited to be the first to explore it.”

Highland Park’s Colleen Spector has channeled a heart for customer happiness into high-flying success at Southwest Airlines.

There are few industries as compelling or complex as the airline industry. Tens of millions of customers are shuttling through the sky above us bound for destinations as diverse as Albany, Amarillo, and Aruba, 24/7/365. This ceaseless ballet of technology and logistics is hard to fathom until you slow down to think about it.
It takes a certain type of person to thrive amid the chaos and competition of the business—someone who can see through all the contrails and find the silver linings. Enter Colleen Spector. Born in Libertyville, educated at Purdue, and now living with her family in Highland Park, Spector was recently elevated to a Senior Leader role at Southwest Airlines, supporting the company’s East Coast sales team of 17 members. It’s Spector’s fourth promotion in five years. Clearly, she found her place at what is now the largest U.S. airline, serving the most air travelers domestically.
An earlier role in the hotel business opened Spector’s eyes to the power of corporate hospitality and illuminated her path to the airline world.
“I just found it so interesting that these major companies—the Googles, Amazons, and McDonald’s of the world—were spending hundreds of millions of dollars every year on airplanes, hotels, food, and meetings to drive their business,” Spector says. “Business travel supports every industry globally. What an underline on the power of this. Taking care of these business travelers to keep economies and businesses going.”
“The essential difference in service is not machines or ‘things.’ The essential difference is minds, hearts, spirits, and souls.”
- HERB KELLEHER, CO-FOUNDER OF SOUTHWEST AIRLINES
Spector credits her ability to successfully manage different roles and hit critical revenue targets to her belief in the power of “And.” To achieve success, Spector believes that it is important to remove the self-imposed barriers we sometimes place on ourselves. It’s possible to be young and lead a team with perspective. Or to be a dedicated mom and fully committed corporate leader. When the invisible boundaries disappear, it becomes possible to succeed at things that seem to intrinsically oppose one another. It was a lesson she learned in her first job out of school, running food and beverage for a private management company in Ohio.
“This power of ‘And’ really came into play,” she recalls, “because I was a 22-year-old leading people who were 20-plus years older than me. That experience taught me if you’re willing to be humble and listen and do the hard work alongside everybody else, you can earn respect. That’s where I learned I can be young and be influential. I can be new in my career and still have a bit of wisdom about what we need to improve the process. I started understanding there’s this duality that exists here.”
On the topic of duality, Spector is specifically responsible for growing Southwest’s business travel, which exists alongside its well-known footprint in leisure travel. While the airline that strives to bring “heart” to travelers may not immediately suggest briefcases and laptops, its commitment to the corporate segment has not waivered and is climbing back to pre-pandemic levels.
According to Spector, the same things that leisure travelers love about Southwest are what the airline brings to the business sector.
“Being on the road can be stressful. And you have a lot of choices,” she says. “So, the way you feel on the road can impact not only your health and happiness as a business traveler, but that also translates into how you show up for your group, which affects your profitability and how successful you are.”
A recent white paper by independent research group Festive Road commissioned by Southwest found that 91 percent of business travelers believe that airline and airport experiences have a significant impact on their readiness to perform for work. Spector says Southwest has long recognized this importance, and that’s why they emphasize laughter and fun as part of the air travel journey.
“You have to experience the product because it’s really difficult to understand an intangible like hospitality or the feel of our gate area when agents are making it fun and saying, ‘thank you,’” she explains. “Those things are not a part of a contract. It’s part of the heart of who we are. And that’s always been the case going back to the ‘70s.”
SHERIDAN ROAD 79
Spector wearing Balmain blouse, Valentino skirt, and Lela Rose jacket, Neiman Marcus Northbrook
Customer service became a linchpin of the company not long after it was founded by Herb Kelleher and Rollin King as an intrastate Texas airline in 1971. Kelleher, the company’s late CEO, was famous for his no-bull witticisms, including many on the topic of service. “The essential difference in service,” he once said, “is not machines or ‘things.’ The essential difference is minds, hearts, spirits, and souls.”
Spector lights up when she talks about the culture of the airline, now nearly 75,000 employees strong, because she believes the values of the founders still course through the company. (Including those of Southwest President Emerita Colleen Barrett, a pioneer in airline customer service known as the “Queen of Hearts”).
Spector says Southwest places a strong emphasis on the happiness of its workers, and when employees are happy and supported, they perform better. It’s a point of view that meshes well with her training in hospitality at Purdue and her upbringing in general.
“I am very much a stereotypical oldest child. I am a people pleaser,” she says. “I have a high level of responsibility. I want to make sure everybody’s cohesive. I also really have a respect for service. I think that was part of my Catholic school upbringing [she attended high school at Carmel] . . . it was service work, volunteering at nursing homes, Girl Scout troops, all of those things.”
Witnessing Spector’s fast ascent within the Southwest culture, it feels natural to ask where Spector sees herself going next.
“I’m proud of where I’ve gotten and of my success. I want to be a role model for my kids and have them know that I’m choosing this because it makes me feel proud of myself and the work we are doing. I want to have an impact,” Spector says. “I feel whole at the end of my day. I fall asleep overflowing.”

“Cory is the best! This is the second time I’ve used his services (four if you count buying AND selling). Starting with Cory’s considerable marketing and brokerage skills, he generated a lot of interest in my home and we had a quick sale! He interacts with people in the best manner, even when discussing difficult or stressful issues. Cory is also very skillful dealing with the back end of the home sale, dealing with inspections, attorneys, lenders, contractors etc. The buyer requested a 15-day closing and Cory was instrumental with making that happen. Even better, he’s the kind of guy you like being with! He helped me so much! I highly recommend Cory.”

College pals Katie Freiburger and Heather Martin are ready to plan your next adventure as they leverage their past professional experiences into their new career venture—Friend-Trips LLC.
WORDS BY ANN MARIE SCHEIDLER / PHOTOGRAPHY MARIA PONCE / STYLING BY THERESA DEMARIA

Katie Freiburger and Heather Martin met at the University of Michigan and have been friends ever since—through all of life’s phases.
Freiburger owned an international children’s clothing business, and Martin practiced law. Both raised families on the North Shore and volunteered their time in numerous places— from their children’s schools to hospital boards to philanthropic organizations in Chicago. But the friends had reached a point in their lives where they were ready to write a new chapter.
“Neither of us was really interested in just getting another job,” Freiberger says. “What we wanted to do was bring together the knowledge we had from our past careers and combine it in such a way that created a true passion project. We realized that we’re at a time in our lives when we can redefine ourselves and that’s what we’re doing.”
Last August, Freiburger and Martin hit send on an email to their network of friends and colleagues letting them know that Friend-Trips LLC was available to craft unforgettable group and family adventures. Drawing upon their diverse backgrounds and global escapades, they have created a company that redefines group travel for all ages. Friend-Trips promises to custom tailor and enhance the way people explore the world together.
“We’ve been both so shocked at how this has taken off,” Martin explains. “Even though friends have been asking me for travel tips for years, you just don’t know how people are going to receive news that you’re turning a life’s passion into a profession. The two of us are so busy—we’re working five to six days a week. There isn’t a day that goes by that we’re not getting a call or a text that we respond to immediately. We’re loving it.”
Since their launch, Friend-Trips has planned sold-out group trips to Miraval (Tucson, Arizona), the Bourbon Trail (Kentucky),
Dome of Commercial Court along the Seine in Paris.

and Level-Up Pickleball Camp (Naples, Florida). “We’ve seen a shift in how people approach group travel,” Freiburger says. “What was once mere party chat about planning a group trip is now a reality with Friend-Trips. We’re the go-to resource for anyone looking to turn their travel dreams into unforgettable, specialized experiences.”
Friend-Trips has planned world travel for family, friends, neighbors, and colleagues to six of the seven continents. While Portugal and Japan continue to trend as popular destinations, more and more Friend-Trips clients are choosing to travel for something specific—a concert, a hike, or even a tennis match.
“Travel is about creating memories that will last a lifetime. We all live busy lives, but most of us remember our greatest escapes and how they changed our perspectives. Traveling with your children teaches them about the world in a way a textbook cannot,” Martin observes.
At the core of Friend-Trips is Freiburger and Martin’s commitment to client service. “Travel planning is absolutely part of the service industry. People are under the misconception that working with a travel planner is more expensive,” Martin explains. “But
often when we take over creating an itinerary for a client, we save them money on their bookings and can get them more amenities. We’re also able to anticipate things they may not because of our extensive travel. We won’t be signing teenagers up for a 7 a.m. walking tour or booking a grandparent on a rigorous hike. We know if anyone in your travel group has a food allergy, and we make sure that anywhere we send you knows this, too. If we don’t know something ourselves, we have someone on the ground that we’re working with who does.”
Friend-Trips star is quickly rising as Freiburger and Martin make a name for themselves in the luxury travel world. The duo has monetized their business by assessing a modest fee for creating an itinerary and receiving commissions from the hotels and tour groups they partner with. “Our business model is that we collaborate with the best in the industry,” Freiburger says. “That’s the value we provide above all else.”
Freiburger and Martin are still pinching themselves that they were able to start a travel company from the ground up. “We wanted to have our own brand, one that spoke for itself. We are the brand,” Martin explains. “When you travel with us, the level of service we promise is exactly what you get. We’re doing for others what we would want done for us. We’re not just booking trips. We’re building friendships.”

EYES & EARS
Phil Andrew and the PAX Group train businesses and organizations to put security first.
WORDS BY THOMAS CONNORS / PHOTOGRAPHY BY JAMES GUSTIN / STYLING BY THERESA DEMARIA
The world has never been a simple place. And the past always looks rosier than it truly was. But there’s no doubt about it: previous generations couldn’t imagine the challenges we contend with today. Whether we’re talking about average citizens worried about safety in the streets or corporations concerned about cyber attacks, contemporary life demands a proactive, preemptive approach to security. When it comes to offering insightful analysis and effective strategies, the Chicago-based PAX Group LLC—a global crisis and conflict management agency—stands firmly on the front line.
“Our approach at PAX Group is to prepare for the before, during, and after of crisis and conflict with comprehensive and holistic planning that begins with listening and analysis to provide an evidence-based understanding of risk and threat,” states Principal Partner Phil Andrew. “We combine robust training in conflict management, crisis response, de-escalation, and threat assessment and management and focus heavily on effective communication and coordination, so people can have confidence when faced with a challenge and have a plan and resources to support those who have experienced the crisis. We find that when leaders are committed to prioritizing safety, they build cultures where people thrive and missions prosper.”
Life gave Andrew an early lesson in managing the unexpected. In 1988, as a college sophomore looking forward to an internship in the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office, he was home with his parents in Winnetka when a woman wielding a gun came through the kitchen door. The troubled woman had attacked the Hubbard Woods School, killing one boy and wounding five others. Andrew and his parents did their best to diffuse the situation. While Andrew succeeded in getting his parents safely out of the house, he was not so lucky. The assailant shot him, the bullet ripping through his lungs, esophagus, stomach, and pancreas, just missing his heart.
After recovering, Andrew completed his degree at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and earned a law degree at DePaul University. Throughout it all, he had his sights set on a career with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and went on to serve more than 21 years as a Special Agent. “Some of the mystique of the FBI—crimefighting, counterterrorism, and intelligence work—bears true,” says Andrew, who, in addition to PAX, is an Adjunct Instructor of Negotiation, Business Intelligence, and Leadership at DePaul University’s Kellstadt Graduate School of Business and Department of Management & Entrepreneurship and an Advisor to the Center for National Security and Human Rights Law at Chicago-Kent College of Law. “The truth is, I was pretty awkward flashing the badge at first, but you come to learn that the real work is in preparation, teamwork, and empathetically
“We support companies, universities, schools, municipalities, and organizations small and large with investigations, security and threat assessments, training and crisis communication, planning and response.”
connecting with people of all kinds. I trained and worked as a hostage negotiator, undercover, and did thousands of interviews. Skills around listening and understanding are really paramount.”
PAX offers clients an extensive range of services, from facility security improvements and workplace violence prevention to threat assessment management and crisis communications planning. Its client roster spans the globe and includes Endeavor Health, the Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center, the City of Chicago, and the University of Arizona. “Our PAX team,” says Andrew, “helps guide leaders and organizations to evaluate risk, design and implement effective strategies from experts in intelligence, law enforcement, the military, and well-being and communications to help build cultures that prioritize safety.”
Sadly, dire scenarios most people once only experienced on the big screen are now woven more regularly into real life. The sky isn’t falling, but dark clouds can’t be ignored. “The reality of today’s global environment” observes Andrew, “is that every organization and business must support their people with strategies, systems, and training to enable a culture of safety, to build the skills and resilience to prevent and respond to community violence, workplace conflict and disruptions, threats to physical and digital infrastructure, reputations, and employee well-being. We support companies, universities, schools, municipalities, and organizations small and large with investigations, security and threat assessments, training and crisis communication, planning and response. We have learned a lot since the 1988 Winnetka attack but, as we saw with 2022’s July 4th shooting in Highland Park, we are not immune. When it comes to crisis management and safety, there is no finish line.”

CALM RESTORATIVE LUXURY
Designer Sarah Dippold creates spaces to elevate the rituals of everyday living.

In the 14 years since Sarah Dippold founded her eponymous interior design firm, one thing has remained clear—the demand for brightly tailored, carefully textured, neutrally toned, and luxurious yet livable interiors never wanes.
From luxury residential to branded commercial, Dippold takes great care to deliver unique design environments that are both tailored to client tastes and shaped to last. “We anticipate how client needs will grow and change over time and spend a lot of time listening, interviewing, planning, and organizing to develop each design project with that in mind,” says Dippold.
Dippold says client requests are often quite similar. They seek “restorative, calming environments with neutral palates,” she observes. “Warm, inviting spaces that are luxurious, livable, and timeless. We often say that we like to elevate the rituals of everyday living by creating spaces that celebrate natural materials, aid in seamless daily routines, and offer a calming retreat.”
Sarah Dippold Design (SDD) draws from a toolbox of well-developed and finely honed ideas. Quiet palettes, ones that are full of earth tones set against neutrals, cultivate calm. Layered lighting elements and dimmers set the mood. Use large-scale area rugs rather
than wall-to-wall carpeting to add warmth underfoot while allowing a border of wood or stone flooring to peek through for a more open feel. Textured wallpapers, handwoven fabrics, natural wood, and organic forms add depth and warmth while treating surfaces with textured papers, natural wood, or plaster adds character.
Working with project architects, build teams, associated trades, and landscape designers, SDD contributes to design and material decisions throughout. “To establish design direction, we consider the architecture of the home—new or old, geographic location, and natural surroundings,” explains Dippold. “Client preferences, passions, and lifestyles also play a large role.” As part of the process, computer drawings are used to ensure important design principles of axial symmetry, balance, focal points, scale, and proportion are in place.
Recent SDD projects pay testament to these principles. At a French Provincial home project in Glencoe, an oddly angled cooking area in the kitchen was transformed from a flaw into a feature with the addition of a mirrored backsplash and a bright plaster hood. An outdated fireplace was reimagined with architectural stepped details that pulled the height of the wall forward with a honed and carved marble surround providing the anchoring focal point.
SHERIDAN ROAD 93

Another Glencoe client, whose home is located on a ravine, wanted enhanced views and a connection to the natural surroundings. SDD’s use of light, bright interior treatments, natural wood, and interesting lighting satisfied the wish list. An avid cook, the client also wanted to accentuate the kitchen’s natural light. To deliver, SDD selected handmade Zellige tiles that have a beautifully reflective glaze and irregular, textured finish.
SDD’s work on a new construction country estate that Dippold likens to “a European villa in the countryside” was extensive, including the main house, pool house, garage, and guest house with pool centered between. “The client included me in decisions beyond the interior design of the home. I consulted on choices ranging from exterior paint colors to paver selections to shutter
styles, etc.,” says Dippold. “It was wonderful to be included in all facets of the design both inside and out.”
Objectives for the estate were that it be tailored but casual and comfortable, modern but timeless, inviting but calm, quiet, and devoid of clutter. Looking to warm the bright white home, Dippold used natural stone and selected rich wood tones with deep, dark finishes. “In the bedrooms, we kept things minimal but used layered textures on the beds and incorporated wood furniture with multiple wood finishes to add interest.” Layered lighting added character and a soft glow in the evening without overpowering the various spaces. As SDD does for many of its projects, it designed much of the furniture for the estate and had it fabricated and built locally.

Dippold, who trained in interior design at the Harrington College of Design, says it’s an honor and pleasure to continue working with clients on vacation homes and, when they move, on their new homes. Repeat clients or referrals comprise 95 percent of SDD’s business. “When a client comes to us, they have often either experienced a home that we’ve designed firsthand or have been referred to us by someone familiar with our firm, our process, and our aesthetic,” she observes.
“It’s a great compliment. Clients appreciate that we don’t follow design trends or ‘colors of the year’ but rather, take an intuitive, fresh approach to each project to create serene spaces, one timeless interior at a time.”

DIVORCE WITHOUT COURT: ARBITRATION
Even the most contentious divorce cases can be resolved outside of court. In a divorce arbitration, the parties agree to jointly retain a third party such as a family law attorney or former judge to hear the evidence and decide the issues in their divorce outside of the public courtrooms. Arbitration of family law cases is common in other states such as California where it is often chosen by celebrities and high-profile individuals as an alternative to traditional litigation. Given the average divorce case can last 1-2 years or more in Court, arbitration offers an expedited solution. Unlike litigation, which often involves lengthy court backlogs and delays, arbitration allows parties to set their own schedules and select convenient dates for hearings. This flexibility ensures that cases can be resolved in a timely manner, allowing families to move forward with their lives and reduce the emotional strain associated with prolonged legal battles. Family law cases frequently encounter “emergency” disputes that need immediate attention, which is not always available through the court system. In arbitration, emergency matters can be promptly addressed, argued, and decided by the selected arbitrator without having to interrupt or compete with the other scheduled matters in court.

LEARNING TO FLY
Campus2Career provides hands-on, customized coaching for college graduates who are entering the work world and launching their professional careers.
WORDS BY MITCH HURST
There are many constants in life, but a big one is that it’s about transitions. Consider education. During our formative years, we generally do what we are told by parents, mentors, and teachers. And then suddenly we are thinking about college, and next, the bewildering panic and anxiety inducing expectation of making a career choice. It’s a daunting challenge and responsibility for many young adults. This is where Campus2Career (C2C) enters the picture.
Nailing that first job, not just any job but the right one, is a key transition that will help determine students’ professional and financial futures. For 15 years C2C and its CEO and Founder, Frank Schroeder, have been coaching and assisting college graduates to get a leg up as they seek employment in the field of their choice. The company partners with graduates’ sponsors—parents, grandparents, and sometimes other relatives—to prepare graduates for the application and interview process.
There’s a reason C2C has a more than 98 percent success rate helping college grads define their desired career option, and find not just a job, but a quality position in the field of their choice. The company employs a team of professionals from a variety of fields who understand the employment landscape at any given time.
What makes C2C unique is that each client receives dedicated attention from a C2C consultant (their primary coach) who will help them through a rigorous process of defining what they believe they would like to do and landing that job.
“No one out there is doing it like we do, with the amount of personal, one-on-one coaching we offer graduates,” Schroeder says. “Our process is one we’ve perfected since our founding 15 years ago, and that’s the reason for our success.”
C2C’s six-phase process is simple to understand. It includes elements like relevant interactive assessments; creating a compelling résumé; undergoing interviewing practice on the phone, with Zoom, and in person; learning to network the right and productive way; and researching the type of job in a profession or industry that excites the client.
“It’s hard work, but if our clients aren’t prepared and enthusiastic and knowledgeable about a specific opportunity and the way to differentiate themselves from plenty of other applicants, they won’t get past the first hurdle,” Schroeder says.
The U.S. job market is competitive and demanding, but C2C is there to build self-confidence and self-esteem to overcome the anxiety that career definition and landing a meaningful job generate.
“Great jobs are hard to get, period,” adds Schroeder. “But seeing the inevitable big smile of justifiable pride on our clients’ faces after negotiating an offer is the fun and exciting part. They have earned it.”
That success is a joint effort, requiring commitment from both C2C and their clients.
“What we’ve learned over the years is that it both requires our professional expertise but also a firm commitment from our clients to our process,” Schroeder says. “That’s what we emphasize to parents and other sponsors. It’s a two-way street, and clients have to put the work in if they are going to be successful.”
With offices now in Chicago, Florida, and New York, C2C continues to grow and expand its reach.
“The path to a good first job isn’t the same as it was twenty or thirty years ago,” Schroeder says. “We are here to help college graduates navigate their way through this complex new territory. From the outset C2C has been results and outcomes based. Our goal is clear: our clients must land a meaningful job in the field of their choice.”

PLASTIC SURGERY UPDATE: HI DEF MALE BREAST REDUCTION
ynecomastia, or over-development of the male breast, is a common condition. Some studies indicate that the incidence may be as high as 25 percent. It may be the result of heredity, disease, or the use of certain drugs. For many, it begins in puberty. If the case is mild it may disappear on its own. For more significant cases surgery is usually recommended.
Often men who are serious about conditioning and developing their bodies are frustrated that no amount of dieting or exercise will allow them to sculpt their chest. This is because there is excessive fat and or breast tissue covering their muscle and so their efforts are futile.
Gynecomastia can cause significant emotional problems and impair one’s self-confidence. Often it causes the male to avoid situations where his chest may be exposed.
In general, gynecomastia can surgically be treated by removing excess fat, glandular tissue, and or skin. More mild cases can be improved with non-invasive treatments that destroy underlying fat.
Newer techniques such as Vaser hi-definition liposuction allow one to remove larger volumes of fatty tissue thru minimal incisions and to define or sculpt the underlying pectoralis muscle. For the male that wants a truly more athletic, sculpted chiseled chest some of the fat that is removed can be prepared and injected into the muscle to give a more “buff” appearance. Fat grafting is highly successful and the muscle feels and looks like the patient has been working out in the gym for years. Additional procedures to either reduce the nipple or areola can often be done at the same time or as a secondary procedure.
For the male who suffers from the embarrassment of gynecomastia, this can be a life-changing procedure. For the male who wants a more chiseled chest and diet and exercise won’t get him there, this is the answer.

RIP-ROARING RORY
Highland Park’s Rory Rubin can’t contain her enthusiasm for her container homes company, S.I. Container Builds Inc.
WORDS BY BILL MCLEAN / ILLUSTRATION BY ROBERT RISKO
Faster, Higher, Stronger—Together.
Behold the Olympic motto.
Highland Park resident Rory Rubin and her family—husband Dan and children Cassie (19) and Shaun (17)—lit the first Rubin Olympic Games cauldron 10 years ago to bring in the New Year.
“We stage kooky events, mostly,” Rubin explains. “Kayak races, mini-ring tosses, see who can create the best blind artwork, and then give out recycled medals at the end.”
Rubin, 54, deserves an authentic medal for having formed S.I. Container Builds (SICBS) in 2018. It builds single- and multi-family residences using one-trip shipping containers as the primary material.
Licensed in all 50 states and backed by the early-stage investor group Hyde Park Angels, SICBS builds a variety of functional structures that are sustainable, resilient, and reliable. Reusing this steel frame makes a positive impact on the living conditions of communities and the wellness of the planet by offering innovative solutions that are driven by quality. SICBS is combating the housing crisis while updating traditional ways of construction—fulfilling Rubin’s mission to educate communities about the importance of sustainable living and minimizing the carbon footprint.
“There are a lot of misconceptions about the container home business,” Rubin says. “The containers are not rusty old boxes; they’re made of corrosion-resistant alloys, built to code, and can be stacked like LEGOs. We only broker containers that have crossed the ocean once. If we don’t recycle them, the containers would be stacked in ‘container graveyards,’ since the U.S. does not ship them back.”
“Another wonderful project was built on the campground at Yukon Village in Wisconsin,” Rubin notes. The container village project was a first for Petite Retreats, a company offering unique vacation rentals in picturesque locations ranging from Yosemite National Park to the Florida Keys. Five shipping containers were transformed into cozy and sustainable tiny house rentals. Surrounded by large pines and massive oak trees, it is hard to believe the village is only 15 miles from the action-packed and family-friendly Wisconsin Dells.
“We are so blessed with our relationships,” Rubin continues. “Having clients who share our values and mission to ‘do good’ makes what we do that much more powerful.”
It takes only eight to 12 weeks to build most SICBS structures, which range from houses to villages to accessory dwelling units (aka mother-in-law suites) to commercial buildings.
“Our structures offer flexibility because they can blend into any community, through cladding and other design elements, and can be built for just about anything,” says Rubin.
SICBS has partnered with Boris Lawrence Henson Foundation and Kate Spade New York to bring the “She Care Wellness Pods” to historically black colleges and universities to help destigmatize mental health conversations.
On the books and in partnership with Housing Opportunity Development Corporation and Shelter Inc. and funded by an Illinois Department of Children and Family Services grant, SICBS will build a home in Cook County that provides safety and housing for young female survivors of human trafficking.
“We’re addressing some of our country’s most pressing needs,” Rubin says. “There are so many wonderful uses for our containers.”
Why did Rubin start a modular construction company? Building is a family mindset. Father Neil was an architect who ended up working on the business side of the industry.
“Dad has professional grit,” Rubin says. “I have it, too. It’s the mindset I use to push through and make a difference. It was instrumental in helping me create this company.”
Rubin’s professional life began after she majored in psychology at Ithaca College in New York and earned her Master of Science in Social Administration at Case Western Reserve University in Ohio. She worked on the business side of social work for years and as a management consultant after that.
“It really isn’t so strange starting as a social worker,” Rubin says. “I was always part of impact projects. Now, I do impact projects through S.I. Container Builds.”
“We’re making history in Cook County as the very first container homes dropped in Evanston in April of this year. We now have real solutions to housing here in Illinois and beyond.
Well done, Rory.
Time to climb onto an award podium’s top spot.
