THE THRILL OF THE CHASE. THE LAP OF LUXURY. THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS. As a true Aston Martin, motorsport has played its part in the development of our four door sports car. In May 2010, Aston Martin contested the annual Nürburgring 24 hours in a near-standard roadregistered Rapide. With only minor changes to satisfy racing safety requirements, this car – complete with standard Touchtronic 2 automatic transmission – ran fast and faultlessly throughout, achieving second in class and 34th overall from a starting grid of 200 purpose-built racing cars. As with all our racing activity, lessons learned in that gruelling event have directly influenced the development of future road car products, including the Rapide S.

C
ities which host major golf tournaments often are fast-paced havens. Augusta, Ga., home of The Masters? Much more urban than suburban. Irving, Texas, home of the HP Byron Nelson Championship? The population is 216,000 and counting. Reno, Akron and other regular PGA Tour stops aren’t exactly secluded hamlets kicking up their feet on the front porch. And then there’s Lake Forest. Nationally it may be best known as the place Mr. T chopped down trees (often a golfer’s dream when a ball lies behind one), but locally it is admired for quiet streets, top schools and gracious residents. Admirable that may be, but it’s not exactly a recipe to catch the eye of the PGA Tour, which is more interested in a city’s ability to provide a championship course, hospitality, parking and more. Sure, the Onwentsia Club in town played host to a U.S. Open in 1906 — when Scotland’s Alex Smith bested brother Willie to capture a $300 first prize — but welcoming a national golf event once every 107 years doesn‘t exactly count as a regular rotation. Conway Farms Golf Club has changed the landscape. For a course carved out of farmland 22 years ago to be playing host to the BMW Championship and the world’s top golfers this month is startlingly impressive. Member Luke Donald played a role in recruiting the tournament, to be sure, but an immaculate, challenging course and a city committed to providing first-class amenities sealed the deal. There is no doubt a top-notch experience is about to take place. Read more inside. Golfers never were part of the trading-card craze,
but that didn’t stop New Trier High School’s John Makowiec from collecting sports cards. About two million — that’s right — sit in his home. But he’s not trying to set a world record; rather, he runs the charity Cards2Kids, where he delivers cards to children at hospitals and other spots. He is our first Standout Student of the new school year, and Angelika Labno writes the story in these pages. Makowiec’s charity work may help him get into a top college, along with the assistance of New Trier’s guidance department. North Shore high schools, for the most part, enjoy active college counselors who steer teens toward the right places to apply. It’s exciting that the PGA and BMW folks think so highly of us.” Conway Farms presents many challenges, even on those rare days when wind isn’t a factor. The par-71 course was designed to reflect the traditions of Scottish links golf. “It’s well-built, with very few flat areas,” Looby said. “It requires a lot of skills. The rough is brutal, the sand traps are deep, and the greens can be fast. “It’s a challenge every time you play it,” he added. To ensure the course would be in pristine condition for the international event, guests weren’t allowed to play it after Aug. 15, and members could play it through Labor Day. “September is usually a beautiful month in this area,” Marsh said. “Add that to the deep history of golf along the The lengthy eighth hole at Conway Farms features water and one ex- North Shore, along with all of the golf fans here, it’s no tremely deep bunker. wonder there’s a fever pitch of excitement.” There’s been a fever pitch of e-mails too. Cool Hand Luke
Donald ready to play host for BMW Championship ■ by david sweet Before strolling to the driving range to knock out a pyramid of balls at Conway Farms Golf Club this summer, Luke Donald mused about the challenges PGA Tour pros will face at his home course. “Guys who are offline will find the heather and the fescue grass, and that’s very tough,” says Donald, a member at the Lake Forest club that will host the BMW Championship — the third leg of the FedEx Cup — from Sept. 9-15. “The superintendent is trying to get greens firm and fast. “I was extremely excited when I heard there was a chance Conway may get this tournament. I pushed pretty hard with the PGA Tour to try to make it happen.” Born and raised in England, it may surprise some to find Donald — the No. 1 golfer in the world for 56 weeks in 2011-12 — championing a Midwestern course. After all, most pro golfers flock to Florida and Arizona — yet Donald lives 20 minutes away from the Tom Fazio-designed tract. The 35-year-old first visited Conway Farms as a teenager on a recruiting trip to Northwestern University, where he matriculated. As a member of the Wildcat golf team and since, he’s played the 7,216-yard long (from the tips) course hundreds of times. “I’m never shooting 63 or 64 consistently here — 69 is a good round,” Donald says. “I don’t think they’ll tear this course up unless it gets wet and soft. “The 15th hole (a short par four lined with water and pot bunkers) will be very dramatic — they’ll move the tees up so they can go for the green.” The BMW Championship at Conway — which will feature Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson and 68 other top golfers — should be much more comfortable for Donald than last year’s Ryder Cup at Medinah Country Club. Playing for Europe in his hometown and staying in a hotel 20 miles from his own residence was “kind of odd,” he admitted, though Europe’s come-from-behind victory thrilled him (and is a source of gibes from his American friends). The 5-foot-9, 160-pounder is still searching for his maiden major win. He was sizzling through the first 52 holes at the U.S. Open this year before faltering at the end of the third round. A final-round 75 at Merion Golf Club squashed his chances. He missed the cut at both the British Open and at the PGA Championship — the first time he had suffered that fate in back-to-back majors — and admits his game has not been in top form. “I haven’t hit as many greens as I would have liked this year,” he said. “I need to keep improving my game — to get a little more consistency in my trajectory and direction.”
Pat Goss, who has coached Northwestern University’s golf squad since 1997, helped lead the recruiting efforts (along with Conway pro and then Wildcat head coach Jeff Mory) of Donald, who graduated with a degree in art theory and practice in 2001. “The thing that impressed us most was the level of play he was at,” Goss recalls. “Everything we learned back then holds true now — level-headed, consistent and a solid player.” Still, the change in Donald’s game since college has been striking. “It’s undergone a full renovation,” Goss says. “In college, he was an average putter. On tour, he realized his short game and putting were liabilities. Now they’re probably the best in the world.” Donald has earned more than $30 million from PGA tournaments during his career and inked endorsement deals with Ralph Lauren, NetJets and other international names. He smiles when asked about the Luke Donald Collection — three wines produced by Lake Bluff-based Terlato Wines International. “It’s a great hobby — it’s fun to see my name on a wine bottle,” says Donald, whose brand includes a claret ($40 a bottle retail), chardonnay ($28-$29) and viognier ($28-$29). Bill Terlato, chief executive officer of Terlato Wines International, met Donald at Northwestern when the future pro played for the Wildcats and Terlato took lessons from Goss. “Ever since I’ve known him, he’s been interested in wine and food,” Terlato said. “His agent felt this would be a good reflection of the Luke Donald brand, the opposite of a beerswigging golfer.” Donald’s involvement from the get-go was significant — he and his future wife, Diane, spent nearly a week tasting different varietals with Terlato in California. “We zeroed in on the style of wine he wanted, and then we zeroed in on 9-10 blends,” Terlato recalled. “This is something he has a passion for.” He has another off-the-course passion — his family. According to www.lukedonald.com, home with Diane and his two young daughters “is where Luke loves to be the most” (during the BMW Championship, Sergio Garcia is also slated to stay there). Donald tweets intermittently for his 420,000 followers, usually tossing out jokes (“My jaw is hurting slightly this week - too many ham and cheese baguettes!!” at the French Open) to compliments (“Easy to see why Phil Mickelson is so liked and admired - he just personifies class, and one helluva golfer too!”). He’s a Chicago Cubs’ fan and attends Chicago Bulls’ games (“I was impressed with Coach Thibodeau and how much he works the guys”) in his adopted city. “A lot of people get deterred because of the winter, but

photography by jim prisching Chicago has great culture, great restaurants,” Donald says. “I’ve traveled around a lot of the U.S., and it doesn’t get much better than here.” Donald said his father, Colin, introduced him to golf when they stayed at a timeshare in Spain, and that his grandfather (whom he never knew) was a fantastic player. Two years ago, Donald’s father died suddenly. “He was never as concerned about my golf as he was in bringing me up as a decent person, with good morals and to be someone who can set a good example,” Donald told the Daily Mail in England soon after his father passed away. Terlato believes his father accomplished those goals with Donald rather quickly. “Even from a young age, he was cut from a different cloth — he was respectful and understated,” Terlato noted. As Donald strikes balls on the broad Conway range, he holds his follow-through for at least two seconds before relaxing. Decked in a rare pair of shorts and a purple Ralph Lauren shirt, he hits iron after iron near his destination. He then grabs a metal wood from his Mizuno bag (whose size reminds one of Rodney Dangerfield’s in “Caddyshack” — without the beer tap or television) and keeps swinging. What has Donald told his fellow pros who have asked about Conway, which is still in the hunt to host the BMW again in 2015? Says its best-known member, “I’ve given it glowing reports. I think the guys are looking forward to having a new venue. And I’m excited to show Conway to my peers and professionals.” ■

Guidance offices crucial to students’ college choices
barbara smaller/the new yorker collection/www.cartoonbank.com
■ by angelika labno As thousands of North Shore freshmen are getting their feet in the high school door for the first time, seniors are preparing for their exit — by buzzing in and out of their college advisory departments before the Nov. 1 college application deadline. “It’s a very intensive program of counseling and reality checks,” said New Trier College Counselor James Conroy, who oversees about 250 seniors and juniors. “For the student to find the best match, the process must begin with self-assessment,” said Highland Park Counselor Aliza Gilbert. “Once a student has thought about needs, wants and desires, then he or she works with a counselor to explore schools that match that individual criteria.” Such assessments begin early on. Most schools offer seminar sessions for freshmen and sophomores, and meetings — including those with family members — begin junior year. Some schools allow the students to decide on the frequency of face-to-face time, while others are on a more regimented schedule. During such meetings, students and counselors discuss passions, finances and the location and atmosphere of a school. “At times you feel like a travel agent,” Conroy quipped. “One guy said, ‘I want mountains and I want the ocean’ and I said, ‘Do you want a vacation or a college?’” Established relationships with colleges are one of the pivotal resources North Shore high schools have to offer. Many college counselors are allowed to travel nationally and internationally. Conroy spends up to $15,000 yearly for travel expenses, and for the past eight years, St. Andrew’s in Scotland has invited New Trier for all-expenses-paid visits because of its demand for American students. “That’s the kind of networking that needs to be done to give our kids the greatest advantage,” said Conroy. “That dialogue that you have with college

admissions people is invaluable.” Lake Forest Academy’s student body, although small like most private schools, spans 38 countries, making college visits all the more interesting. Jack Lewis, the dean of college counseling, has traveled to the United Kingdom to work with English and Scottish universities. On Sept. 17, more than 140 colleges from the U.S., Canada and the United Kingdom will convene at LFA, along with 12 other suburban high schools. Networking, however, is only an aid — getting into college is largely up to the student. Preparing for admissions and eventually picking a school takes careful planning and mindful class selections starting freshman year. College counselors ease the burden by offering essay reviews and mock interviews. “We ensure that they understand the requirements and expectations of colleges, including their top schools, so that they have the best chance at admission,” said Deerfield High School College Counselor Beth Gilfillan. “We want every senior to have college options and to reach for their top schools.” Lewis, who is celebrating his 40th year in college counseling, notes one of the biggest obstacles in the process of choosing a “top school”: U.S. News & World Report rankings. “There’s more angst created by those rankings that you didn’t have 10 or more years ago,” said Lewis. “The focus is becoming too much on rank rather than finding the best matches for the kids.” This kind of stress can blind students from making the right choice. Parents, too, can act as a hindrance by pushing for a certain school. Lewis suggests that above all, students should think about what they want to go to school for before looking into schools, even try out an internship or shadow a professional — the rest will come more easily. “We tell kids more than one school will meet your needs,” said Conroy. “There’s not some kind of perfect school. This isn’t Cinderella with only one slipper that fits.” ■

Makowiec’s house of cards will keep standing tall ■ by angelika labno
John Makowiec

John Makowiec’s home is swimming in sports cards. His furnace room is filled with them, and even more lie in the closet. There are two million of them, and they keep on accumulating — by the thousands. “You don’t really know how much two million of something is until you see it,” said Makowiec, 17. Although the New Trier senior is also a private collector, the two million cards technically don’t belong to him. The cards are for his charity, Cards2Kids. “Who I really want to help are the kids who could really use a pick-me-up,” said Makowiec, who has given away hundreds of thousands of packs to date. He started the organization at the end of 2010 after thinking of a way to combine two passions: sports cards and community service. The cards are sorted by sport, with the most valuable ones weeded out (like the All-Star and Hall-ofFamers). They are then arranged into packs of 20, with about five of them being those “big-time” cards. In the end, they are distributed to children at various hospitals, Boys and Girls Clubs and other organizations across the United States, Canada and Panama. If Makowiec were to put together one pack a minute, 24 hours a day, it would take him just over 69 days to go through his current collection. He’s enlisted the help of friends and volunteers, holds packing events at community centers and has recently teamed up with Lincolnshire’s nursing home, The Wealshire and The Ponds. “My grandparents and friends’ grandparents have helped us, and they find it a rewarding experience,” said Makowiec. Several events and honors spread the word and reaped donations, the most recent being the National Sports Collections Convention at the end of July. He collected 300,000 cards at the event, and Upper Deck, the trading card company, honored him by surprising him with his
own trading card. “That was definitely the coolest thing I ever got,” he said. “But the special thing is donating to the kids. I can’t emphasize it enough.” The hobby of collecting cards is not only recreational but also benefits kids educationally, Makowiec continues. Each card has a biography on the back, which helps with reading and memorization, and statistics — such as batting average — utilize math skills. Despite living a sports fan’s dream of collaborating with the NHL or traveling to Toronto to attend the Sportscards & Memorabilia Expo, he lists one of his top experiences as a visit to the Children’s Hospital in Milwaukee. Most hospitals don’t allow Makowiec and his helpers to deliver the cards to kids and instead leave out drop boxes for the packs. Milwaukee, however, allowed it. “It was really humbling to see the condition of some of those kids and to be able to give them a Green Bay Packers card and see their faces light up,” he said.
“It was really humbling to see the condition of some of those kids and to be able to give them a Green Bay Packers card and see their faces light up.” | John Makowiec The organization is his full-time job, leaving time only for school. Makowiec will be working as a math tutor in the fall and playing junior varsity tennis in the spring for New Trier. When he heads off to college, he plans to continue the managerial tasks of the organization. “The charity will live on through our ambassadors,” he said. “I feel lucky to be where I am, and I want other people to be able to enjoy some of the things that I enjoy.” ■

Lauren Groff is a Ragdale Foundation alumna and novelist. Most recently, she’s the author of “Arcadia.” She will be one of the guests of honor at Ragdale’s A Novel Affair from Sept. 27-28. She lives in Florida. Reading: I am reading “Antigone” and everything sort of related to “Antigone”— “Antigines,” by George Steiner, Judith Butler’s “Antigone’s Claim” and “Antigonik,” by Anne Carson (one of the more beautiful books I’ve seen). Listening: I’m listening to Pandora. It’s Sigur Rós and Arvo Pärt, that’s my station. When I’m working, which is the only time I have to listen to it, I can’t listen to music with words, or music with words that I understand. Watching: I don’t have time right now! There’s nothing on Netflix that I want to see, and we don’t have a TV. Also, we’re getting up at 5 a.m., and that puts a damper on how much time in the evening you have to relax. Following: I think you’ve caught me in the middle of a hermit moment in my life. I went off social media about a month ago because I have this bet with someone that I can’t finish a manuscript by the end of the year, so I’ve had to buckle down and not follow things. Activity: The only things I’m doing at the moment are spending time with my children, exercising and working. Right now I’m trying to create a calm, rigorously scheduled routine space, where everything happens at the same time every day and I don’t have to worry about anything but my work. It’s fiction and it’s a long piece of fiction; I don’t know what, exactly, it is—which is sort of a problem. If I need a manuscript by the end of the year, I sort of need to know about what I’m doing. I love Ragdale. I went to graduate school in Madison, Wis., and one of my professors had been to Ragdale many times; she said it
was one of her favorite places on the planet. I agree with that. I never applied to go there until I got this email out of the blue from Hannah Judy Gretz, who sponsored me for a residency. At that time, I’d just had a baby. A year later, I came to Ragdale to finish a book. It was so dreamy; it was winter and I barely went outside at all. I worked 18 hours a day and it was perfect — it was pure joy. I was very, very happy to be cooped up.
“It was winter and I barely went outside at all. I worked 18 hours a day and it was perfect — it was pure joy.” | Lauren Groff Eating: Kale salad with feta and lemon dressing. And quinoa, which I love — you can make everything of it, and my family is vegetarian. But I’m so tired of quinoa, and everyone else is kind of refusing to eat it anymore. What is your favorite mistake? One that has had the profoundest influence on my life is falling in love with my husband, which I did not intend to do. We met in college: he was a crew captain, and I was in crew. He was wonderful. I didn’t think it would be a life-changing event, to date this person. But we’ve been together 14 years; we have two children. So the mistake of letting myself leave the path I thought I was on, losing that control, was the best thing that ever happened to me. It wasn’t what I intended, so it wasn’t really a mistake. I don’t necessarily love living in Florida, but I’m learning to love it. It’s a very strange place, and I’m glad I’m living in a place where I only know people outside of my career. I don’t know any writers here. ■

The 456-page book, which weighs in beyond eight pounds, was spearheaded by Carter, the tome’s editor, with assistance from Friend. “We had a blast doing it,” Friend says. “We looked at every issue (650). It’s got a wonderful flavor to it.” Speaking of flavor, when he’s in town, Friend prefers Sunday breakfast at The Country Kitchen in Highland Park, where he orders a big salad or the bagel plate. Like many displaced North Shore residents, Friend remains a Chicago sports fan, despite being heartbroken by the Cubs in 1969 when he attended 30 games and wore his Bleacher Bums yellow construction hat (“I don’t know what happened to that”). In fact, a Cubs’ World Series is part of his bucket list, along with a trip to Yemen and a home with a library on the lake. Vanity Fair wasn’t on that list when Friend was introduced to journalism about 45 years ago — after all, the magazine wasn’t resuscitated from its Depression-era shutdown until 1983. But when Friend thinks about working there, he considers himself lucky. “You can cover the waterfront here — news, history and more,” he says. “It makes coming to work exciting.” ■

Let’s Talk Real Estate by Jean Wright, President/Broker Owner Crs, GrI
sellInG YOur HOme In a slOw market In today’s market, Realtors® and sellers are paying more attention to the importance of “thinking outside the box”. The real estate market of the 21st century is challenging and changing at the pace of technology—in other words, at warp speed! Gone are the days of simply popping a “For Sale” sign in the yard, creating an MLS listing and placing an advertisement in the Sunday papers. Though that’s tradition—and those methods of home sale are certainly still necessary and vital— they’re simply not enough to make your home distinct in the real estate market of today. Savvy Realtors® and sellers know that it takes more—much more—to successfully close on a home and maximize on the home’s worth. Today’s buyer is looking for more than just a place to hang their hat—they’re looking for a property that reflects their lives, their values and their lifestyle. It’s as much about where your grill will be during the summer months and what kind of garden you’ll put in come springtime as it is about having four walls and a roof. Home staging is a perfect jumping-off point. Most buyers can’t imagine themselves in a space while it’s full of the things that make your house a home—so step one in selling, especially in a slow market, is de-cluttering all the spaces and storing all the home decorations that make it look like “yours”. Likewise, keeping the counters clear and the spaces clean and tidy make a world of difference. Next, have a Kodak moment with your house—glossy print magazines, social media and virtual tours are where most home buyers start looking. If they fall in love with a picture of your house, you’ve got a better chance of them making an offer once they see it in person. There’s a number of ways to make the most of a slow market and sell your home for its maximum value—sit down with your Realtor® and start drawing up your plan for success!

A MATTER OF TASTE
Barnhart knows when to say cheese ■ by katie rose mceneely
Greg Barnhart
photography by joel lerner
Greg Barnhart owns Toasty Cheese, a mobile food truck that serves Chicago, Evanston, and the Highwood Gourmet Market. How did you start Toasty Cheese? We originally looked at doing a traditional brick-and-mortar-style restaurant, but we weren’t sure if the gourmet grilled cheese concept would be a viable long-term concept for a restaurant. We thought going with a food truck would be a good way to explore the concept. Years cooking? We started October of last year, so we’re coming up on our first anniversary. What’s your background? My main background is in business, more of the entrepreneurial side. I was a business consultant for a number of years. Best recipe tweak? I think making sure that we’re using all fresh ingredients and getting the best cheese we can makes a big difference — we’re not using Kraft American Cheese. A better cheese and a better bread makes a better toasted-cheese sandwich. Signature dish? The “Chef’s Choice.” We have nine signature sandwiches, but the chef’s choice is the favorite right now. It includes duck bacon, provolone cheese, fresh spinach and fresh baby arugula with Sicilian cherry tomatoes and aïoli on Panini bread. Favorite cuisine to make? I’m definitely in the sandwich movement, but really more just quality food — it seems like a lot of food that we’ve been getting the past 10 years has been packaged or processed. We’re supportive of locally sourced, fresh products. What do you like to eat at home? Well, I’m never home. But I enjoy anything from a good steak to pizza to
sandwiches — a wide variety of everything. Worthwhile gadget? A great knife and a great spatula. It’s really all you need. Favorite cookbook? My tastebuds. I would say, really, if you look at influences, it would be some of the pioneers who have moved fresh food and local food sourcing, anyone pushing that envelope. If you really look at it, the Food Network and a lot of television programs understand the importance of quality food. Favorite fruit or vegetable? Cantalope and corn. What’s the secret to a toasted-cheese sandwich? Make sure you choose quality products and read the ingredient labels. The less additives a product has, the better off you’ll be. Surprisingly, we have a build-your-own menu, which allows customers to design their own sandwiches. Some of the ingredients customers put together are things we might not put together, but they turn out phenomenal. Last week, we had a customer put bleu cheese and cheddar cheese together. It depends on the individual person. Proudest of: I’m proudest of the following we’ve developed. One of the things that makes it all worthwhile is, when somebody comes to Toasty Cheese, gets a sandwich, leaves and turns around and comes back just to tell us how much they enjoy their sandwich. That makes me very proud of the product we put out and how hard the staff works. Funniest or most memorable kitchen incident? I think the funniest thing in a mobile kitchen is when a customer tells us they want a sandwich to go. Pretty much all of our stuff is to go; we’re a mobile food truck. To find out the Toasty Cheese schedule, visit toastycheese.com ■

A SURE BET Hot summer of golf carrying over to the fall season for Loyola’s Kane Loyola Academy’s Isabelle Kane swings away during earlier action. She was a top five finisher at last year’s IHSA state meet.
photography by joel lerner
■ by bill mclean
sports@northshoreweekend.com Midway through her nine-hole round in a recent dual with Glenbrook South, Loyola Academy senior golfer Isabelle Kane looked up at the gray sky, cracking a confident smile. Her coach, Jim Jackimiec, sat nearby in a cart at the Glenview Park District Golf Club. “It’s coming,” Kane said, referring to rain. Jackimiec dismissed the prediction, convinced it would stay dry for another hour. The two had made a friendly $1 weather bet at the practice green before the dual. By the time Kane drained her final putt on Aug. 28, it was sunny and practically cloudless. The Rambler — a program-best fourth at last fall’s rain-shortened Class AA state tournament in Decatur — had officially become one buck lighter. But the Winnetka resident had also emerged as a money player for her team again, taking medalist honors with a 1-over-par 37 in Loyola’s 155-176 defeat of Glenbrook South. “She’s the most complete player we’ve ever had,” said Jackimiec, the program’s coach since its inception in 1996. “What sets her apart is how fine-tuned her game is, in addition to her talent and competitiveness. Isabelle loves the competition and loves the game. Golf is her passion, it’s what she does, and she’s very good at it.” Kane had a summer to remember on local and national golf tracks, qualifying for both the U.S. Junior Girls’ Championship and U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship.
She reached match play after two rounds at the former but not at the latter. In late July, Kane fell 5 and 4 to Nicole Morales of South Salem, N.Y., at the Junior Girls’ event at Sycamore Hills Golf Club in Fort Wayne, Ind. Morales is ranked No. 2 in the American Junior Golf Association’s Polo rankings. Kane arrived in South Carolina in early August for the U.S. Women’s Amateur at the County Club of Charleston. “That was so cool, being around so many great players [at the U.S. Women’s Amateur],” the 5-foot Kane recalled. “It was great experience.” Kane shot a medalist round of 76 at the Rockford Boylan Invite on Aug. 21, highlighting the Ramblers’ first-place finish after shooting a 72 the day before in a season-opening dual loss to highly regarded Prospect High School. Her length off the tee is impressive, as is her steady short game. Jackimiec got to watch her play a full round at state last fall because Kane was the only Rambler to qualify. “Isabelle made her round [at Red Tail Run Golf Course] look so simple,” he said. “Her drives — she was outdriving 6-foot girls. And the few mistakes she made were little ones. “What I also really like about her game is her ability to find a way out of trouble. Isabelle bears down when she’s in trouble.” A tree attracted one of Kane’s shots in the dual with Glenbrook South last month. Trouble. But she calmly sized up the challenge and essentially shrugged. “She saved par on that hole,” Loyola sophomore teammate Blake Yaccino said. “Isabelle has the ability to stay cool and control her emotions at all times. And she’s always
in a good mood, always fun and funny. She’s a good teammate, too, always willing to help me with my game, with anyone’s game.” An only child, Kane first held a golf club at the age of 3. It felt right, and her sharp eye-hand coordination made the Kane-golf match a successful one from the get-go. She helped Ramblers teams reach the state meet her freshman and sophomore years, with each club finishing fifth. Kane tied for 23rd place as a freshman and tied for 15th place as a sophomore. “My dad [Bernie, also her caddy],” she said, “has been an inspiration to me. He leads by example, and when we’re at the dinner table after a round of golf we go through it, holeby-hole. My mom [Jennifer] also gives input at the table. “Golf,” she added, “has taught me a lot about patience. You can’t get too worked up out there.” A smiling Kane, also an outstanding student, politely declined to name the colleges she’s interested in attending next year. But it’s no secret her golf game is college-ready. Kane needed only two shots — they looked super smooth, super effortless — to reach a pair of par-5 greens against Glenbrook South. Par for the course afterward was her modesty. “Isabelle doesn’t talk about her big accomplishments in golf,” Jackimiec said. “She blends in. She’s pleasant.” She’s also a good bet to return to the far northern region of the leaderboard at state. Notable: Scores from senior Taylor Gentzkow (38), Yaccino (40) and sophomore Nicole Wetoska (40) also counted for Loyola in its win over Glenbrook South on Aug. 28. ■

Mr. Multipurpose McCaffrey displays a ton of versatility in New Trier loss ■ by bill mclean
sports@northshoreweekend.com An old “rookie” had quite an impact in New Trier High School’s football opener last weekend. Versatile senior Matthew McCaffrey — after sitting out his entire junior season with an injury — scored the Trevians’ first touchdown of the season on a 33-yard reception and tossed a late 13-yard TD pass in a 34-20 loss to visiting Schaumburg on Aug. 31. The 6-foot, 190-pounder is listed as a running back. But he wears way more than one hat — make that, helmet — for NT. “He had a nice varsity debut,” Trevians senior quarterback Frank Nicholas said. That TD catch was a thing of beauty, coming nearly three minutes after the Saxons (1-0) had taken an 8-3 lead in the first quarter. Nicholas executed an NFL-sharp playaction pass to a wide-open McCaffrey at Robert Naughton Field in Northfield. “[Schaumburg’s] safety came down hard on that play,” McCaffrey said. “Frank sold it.” But Schaumburg rang up three touchdowns in the third quarter to stretch a 14-13 halftime lead into a 34-13 advantage. “We gave up too many big plays,” Trevians coach Dan Starkey said, referring to Schaumburg’s five TDs — all via the run, including an 86-yarder and two 40-plus-yard
sprints. “We didn’t tackle well, and we didn’t handle their speed well. “But we did a lot of good things, especially in the first half.” NT senior kicker Charlie Durbin booted a pair of 42-yard field goals before the break, with the second occurring with only 2.1 seconds remaining. “We have a lot of confidence in him,” McCaffrey said. Another first-half positive was NT’s first drive, a 12-play, clock-eating trip featuring precise passing from Nicholas (4-for-5, 22 yards) and effective running from Nicholas (an 11-yard run) and senior running back Jordan Garrett (a five-yard gain on a third-and-3). A Durbin field goal put the hosts up 3-0. NT (0-1) marched 81 yards on its next possession, culminating with McCaffrey’s TD grab. “We moved the ball well in the first half,” Starkey said. “We have some weapons on offense, some very good ones.” Two of them — Nicholas and senior wideout Spencer Cotten — sat out for various stretches in the second half because of leg cramps. Cotten (four catches, 39 yards) did not return after the Trevians’ first series in the second half. Nicholas (19-of-26, 148 yards) recovered but was relieved by McCaffrey again for NT’s final possession in a game scheduled for the previous night (Incessant lightning on Aug. 30 forced the postponement.) “The humidity today was sneaky,” Starkey said. “It didn’t feel hot at times because of the breezes, but the
heat certainly was a factor.” McCaffrey hit junior wideout Scott Hammes for a 13-yard TD at 3:03 of the final quarter. Hammes showed tremendous concentration near the end zone, gathering a pass tipped by a Saxons defensive back. Schaumburg quarterback Stacey Smith threw only two passes against NT. Each fell incomplete. But he ran 10 times for 148 yards, as the visitors accumulated 405 rushing yards. “Our kids tried to stay in it,” Starkey said. “Schaumburg’s big plays killed us.” Notable: New Trier senior offensive lineman and captain Rijad Pekmez suffered a serious injury to his left knew during the Trevians’ TD drive in the first half. He groaned as trainers tended to him, prompting a concerned teammate along the sideline to shout to the rest of the team, “Take a knee!” The 6-1, 285-pound Pekmez had missed most of last season with an injured right knee. “A tough loss,” a subdued Nicholas said afterward. “He’s a captain, our main captain. I’ll probably see him tonight.” … McCaffrey (a team-high 50 yards receiving) was one of five Trevs to catch at least three balls against Schaumburg. The others were Hammes (five for 27 yards), Garrett (5-25), Cotten (4-39) and senior Mark Snyder (4-35). … Garrett (13 rushes, 53 yards) and Nicholas (18-35) paced NT’s running attack. … McCaffrey was 4-of-7 passing for 49 yards. … NT junior linebacker Will Francke had a tackle for a two-yard loss on a thirdand-1 early in the second half. ■

THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
Nothing subtle with Sutker
Highland Park quarterback imposes his will in win over Caxys ■ by kevin reiterman
sports@northshoreweekend.com Tommy Sutker plays quarterback like a “Grabowski.” The tough-minded, hard-nosed Highland Park High School senior wasn’t looking for any finesse points in his team’s 32-20 season-opening win over host Lake Forest Academy on Aug. 31. Late in the third quarter, Sutker went all middle linebacker — all smash-mouth — on one of LFA’s defensive backs. “I was yelling at him, ‘You got the first down, get out of bounds,’ ” said HP head coach Hal Chiodo. “Instead he stays inbounds and runs right over their defensive back. “That,” Chiodo added, “is how a quarterback gets respect from his teammates.” “That (29-yard touchdown run) definitely was my highlight play of the game,” said Sutker, who also scored on a seven-yard scramble in the third quarter and tossed a 74-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Grant Paley late in the second quarter. The 6-foot-2, 185-pound Sutker, who grew a tad and added 10 pounds of muscle in the offseason, figured to be a dualthreat quarterback this fall. He is perfectly suited for HP’s no-huddle, spread offense. And with his ability to run, make quick decisions and throw an array of passes, the zone read is his friend. “I’ll continue to go through my reads,” said Sutker, who gained 302 yards on the ground last season. “I’ll try to make the pass before I take off and run. But if running the ball helps the team to win, then ... ” Sutker, who threw for 1,162 yards and nine TDs last fall, was mostly accurate (10-21-0, 207 yards) against the Caxys. He completed passes to six different receivers: Cole Greenberg (3-40), Kelshawn Shields (3-42), Jeremy Levin (1-37), Jarae Ward (1-9), Jack McGuire (1-5) and Paley (1-74). Paley’s 74-yard catch and run came with 1:03 left in the first half — and it came gift-wrapped. “They had some sort of miscommunication,” said Sutker, who said that he couldn’t get the ball to Paley fast enough. “There was no safety over the top. We were in play-action and I made the quickest fake ever (to his running back). “Grant is the fastest or the second fastest guy on the team. So I knew he would finish it off.” HP’s other offensive weapon was kicker/punter Josh Pollack. The Arizona recruit connected on three field goals (34, 44 and 35 yards). “He’s as automatic as they come at the high school level,” Sutker said. “We know that we can turn to him anytime we get inside the 25. When you have him, you don’t have to go for it when you’re 4th-and-12 at the 20-yard line.” Pollack also had a couple of impressive punts: a 43-yarder in the first quarter and the ever-popular coffin corner — which was downed at the LFA 8-yard line — in the fourth quarter. On the defensive side, it’s hard to beat Teddy Sutker’s effort. The QB’s younger brother finished his varsity debut with three sacks and a blocked punt. “He had a monster game,” said Tommy Sutker. At 6-3, 180 pounds, Teddy Sutker has a big upside. “He had a great sophomore season,” said Tommy Sutker. “Still, you’re never sure. There’s a big difference when you go from sophomore football to varsity football.” The other defensive standouts included Jason Goldsmith (10 tackles), Jacob Wiczer (8 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, sack), Daniel Echt (8 tackles, sack, TFL) and Luis Castellanos (6 tackles, 2 TFLs). HP will travel to Mundelein, which defeated Wheeling 29-22 in its season opener, on Sept. 6 (7 p.m.).
Lake Forest Academy Christopher John Karamanos, who was an all-conference quarterback last season, flashed another skill in Saturday’s game against Highland Park. The senior ran a kick back 95 yards. And get this: “I had never returned a kick in a varsity game,” said the three-year starter. “I didn’t expect to score. It was kind of surreal.” Karamanos got a little help from a friend: Malcolm Chaka. Chaka took on HP’s last line of defense and made the block of the game at the HP 35-yard line. “I didn’t think Malcolm was going to pancake him,” said Karamanos. “I saw that and then I thought, ‘I’m gone now.’ ’’ “I’m glad that (HP’s Josh Pollack) didn’t kick that one into the end zone,” said LFA head coach Robin Bowkett.

PRESS BOX LF’S REIMER COMMITS TO NORTHWESTERN Baseball: JR Reimer, a standout pitcher and middle infielder, will be taking his game to the Big Ten. The Lake Forest High School senior made a verbal commitment to Northwestern University last week. He hit .330 for the Scouts last spring. On the mound, he had 2.48 a ERA. And, according to the Prep Baseball Report, Loyola Academy senior Tommy Bordignon, a pitcher/middle infielder, also gave NU an oral commitment. Ramblers senior Drew Owen will play at Villanova. Meanwhile, Lake Forest senior David Keaton earned high marks at the PBR Unsigned Senior Games in early August. He was rated as the fifth best left-hander. Highland Park High School’s Liam Carter, a 6-foot-7 right-hander, also earned rave reviews.

photography by joel lerner “It’s not ideal to have your quarterback return kicks,” the coach added. But he’s one of our better athletes.” The special-teams TD came with 1:03 left in the second quarter, and it gave LFA a 14-13 halftime lead. Karamanos (13-24-0, 116 yards) also threw for a TD, when he fired a 32-yard strike to Dejon Brissett (8 catches, 79 yards) with 6:30 left in regulation. “Dejon is a great playmaker,” said Bowkett. “We need to get the ball to him as much as possible.” “They were bringing five and six (pass rushers). And they played a lot of man coverage,” said Karamanos. “Basically, I had time to throw on that play.” The team’s other TD came in the second quarter, when Kur tis Bur ton-R owe capped off a 15-play, 80-yard drive with a fiveyard run. Burton-Rowe ended up as the game’s leading rusher (14 carries, 88 yards). On the defensive side, Thomas Schaffer (6-7, 240) turned in a terrific second half. He recorded tackles for loss on consecutive plays and later added a quarterback sack. “You run down the QB and maybe something good happens,” said Schaffer, who is from Austria. “Even if the situation looks bad, you continue and keep going. You never give up.” LFA will play at Kankakee McNamara (1-0) on Sept. 6 (7:30 p.m.). ■
Basketball: Former New Trier High School superstar Matt Lottich has joined the men’s basketball coaching staff at Valparaiso University. Lottich, a three-sport athlete with the Trevians, had a standout basketball career at Stanford University. He went on to play professional basketball in Japan for eight years. Meanwhile, his high school teammate, Todd Townsend, took an assistant coaching position with the men’s basketball team at Drake University earlier this summer. Townsend, who played college basketball at Marquette, had been an assistant at Northern Illinois.
LFC GRAD NYAD MAKES HISTORY Swimming: Diana Nyad, a Lake Forest College graduate, completed a historic trip on Sept. 2, becoming the first person to swim from Cuba to Key West, Fla., without the aid of a shark cage. It took the 64-year-old Nyad about 53 hours to accomplish the feat, after having attempted the approximately 110mile swim four other times. Nyad’s first try came in 1978. Storms and difficult currents, among other factors, hindered her attempt last year. ■

After lightning show, Traynor and Scouts bolt to victory
Junior linebacker Jack Traynor of the Scouts wraps up Racine St. Catherine’s running back Tarail King.

sports@northshoreweekend.com There was nothing delicate about Lake Forest High School junior linebacker Jack Traynor in the Scouts’ season opener last week. The 6-foot-1, 215-pounder played ferociously on defense, dropping a ball carrier for a five-yard loss and pouncing on one of LF’s three fumble recoveries in a 33-14 defeat of visiting St. Catherine’s (Wis.) on Aug. 30. He also stopped an Angel for no gain. But Traynor revealed another side afterward. “I dabble with the piano whenever I get some free time,”
Traynor said. A tackler one hour, a tickler of the ivories the next. Who knew? Had somebody rolled a piano into the Scouts’ locker room before the opener, Traynor could have donned a crisp tuxedo and entertained his teammates for more than an hour. An occasionally spectacular show of lightning delayed the start of the football game. “We have this countdown clock inside,” Traynor said. “When it [reaches 0:00] we head out to the field. “We had to look at [0:00] for quite a while.” It took the visitors from Racine only 90 seconds to get on the board, using a 68-yard pass play on its third play from scrimmage.
But LF (1-0), a Class 6A state semifinalist last fall, scored 34 unanswered points, mostly behind senior running back Hub Cirame (team highs of 117 yards rushing and 64 yards receiving). The 6-foot, 200-pounder found the end zone four times (two rushing touchdowns, two TD receptions), darting and cutting hard when he wasn’t zipping past the Angels’ defensive backs. “Hub had a special game,” Scouts coach Chuck Spagnoli said. “He’s bigger this year, and his speed has picked up. He has a better understanding of when to cut; he knows how to read a defense. “It’s been neat, seeing Hub’s maturation as a player,” he added. A defensive back a year ago, Lake Forest senior quarterback Regis Durbin finished with 145 yards passing (11-of-16) and 38 more on the ground, including a two-yard TD burst midway through the fourth quarter to cap LF’s scoring. His first-half scoring tosses to Cirame covered 35 and 24 yards. LF led 13-7 at the break. Scouts senior wide receiver David Glynn — whose father, also named David, suited up as a running back during his days at LFHS — caught three passes for 41 yards in the opener. His 17-yard reception was Durbin’s first completion of the night, coming on a first-and-20 on the first series. “I try to do whatever I can as a receiver and on special teams,” said the humble 6-2, 185-pounder. “Make plays — make as many plays as I can for the team.” The final play last weekend didn’t occur until 11:17 p.m., due to the late start time of 8:45 p.m. After the Angels struck quickly following the storm and lingering lightning bolts, Lake Forest never panicked, never sulked. “We stayed positive,” Glynn said. “We persevered,” added Traynor. Notable: Scouts senior linebacker Jack Kutschke and junior defensive back Virgil Young also recovered fumbles against St. Catherine. … LF senior linebacker Joseph Beible imposed his will in a variety of ways, blocking a punt, recording a sack (minus-15 yards) and batting a pass. … Scouts senior tight end Liam Howe caught three passes for 27 yards, including an 11-yarder from backup QB David Keaton. … LF’s longest scoring play was Cirame’s 59-yard run early in the third quarter. … Senior tight end Thomas Ward’s 22-yard reception set up Cirame’s one-yard TD run in the third quarter. … Scouts junior linebacker Bryan Bund finished with two tackles for loss. … Spagnoli’s crew executed a balanced attack, rushing for 188 yards and passing for 179. The blocking was led by lineman Peter Durot, Thomas Kennedy, Spencer Bleecker, John McArthur and Daniel Sullivan … LFHS will host a “Naval Station Great Lakes Appreciation Day” on Sept. 6 (7:30 p.m.), with the football game between Grant High School and LFHS serving as the backdrop. The celebration will feature special recognition of the naval station and its personnel. ■

THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
Gleason, Ramblers click in season opener ■ by t.j. brown
sports@northshoreweekend.com He’s a Jack of all positions — in Loyola Academy’s defensive backfield. It’s a luxury having senior Jack Gleason as a primary weapon in Loyola Academy’s secondary. Before spending last season as a starting cornerback, he flew around often as a safety. In Loyola’s season opener against visiting Milwaukee Marquette on Aug. 31, Gleason was back at safety, and effective, too, helping to keep the Hilltoppers from crossing midfield until two minutes remained in the first half. He returned to cornerback to start the second half. On Marquette’s second play of the half, Gleason stepped in front of a Charlie Greif pass, running it back 22 yards to the end zone. Loyola football coach John Holecek said that Gleason will continue to move between safety and corner this season. “When we have mismatches, we like to put him at corner because he’s so physical,” Holecek said. “When you put him in the middle of the field, as athletic and tough as he is, he gets to make some more plays.” Gleason’s defensive touchdown came on the heels of a Julius Holley 30-yard touchdown run, a 10-8 Loyola lead at halftime suddenly becoming a 24-8 lead, and it was a nail-biter no more. Gleason and Co. finished up a 31-8 win to start the season. “We needed a momentum changer, with all those first-game jitters,” Gleason said. “Finally, we had something good happen to us. After that, everything started clicking.” Gleason clicked all game. Behind Greif, a second-year starter, Marquette put up 33 points the week before in a loss to Wisconsin Lutheran, ranked No. 4 in Wisconsin by the Associated Press. Against Loyola, Marquette managed just 162 passing yards as Gleason had four solo tackles and three assists playing two positions. Beyond Gleason, defensive backs Mark Dowdle (6 solos, 2 assists) and Ryan Zinkula (3 solos, blocked punt, interception), linebackers Tim Sullivan (4 tackles, fumble recovery) and Austin Lyons (3 tackles, sack), and linemen Charlie Pontarelli (3 tackles, forced fumble) and John Kecki (fumble recovery, sack) also stood out. On offense: Quarterback Jack Penn debuted as the starter and shook off some early jitters, going 14-for-30 for 222 passing yards and two touchdowns as Loyola picked up 19 first downs and piled up 568 yards of total offense for the day. “After the first couple of snaps, I felt pretty comfortable and confident in myself and the guys lining up next to me,” Penn said. Holley complemented Penn’s passing game nicely with 125 yards and a touchdown on 18 carries. An offensive line led by starting tackles Milan Urukalo (6-4, 265 pounds) and Jack Moroni (6-3, 265), guards Bubba Kubon (6-0, 230) and Matt Maher (6-0, 230) and center Michael Carlin (5-11, 240) not only opened opportunities for Holley but kept prized Wisconsin recruit Connor Sheehy (6-4, 270 pounds) from creating too much havoc. “They loaded up the box, and we still moved the ball at times very well on the ground,” Holecek said. Junior Owen Buscaglia was Penn’s favorite target, grabbing both touchdown passes. He gained 83 yards on six receptions. The Ramblers will play a road game Saturday against O’Fallon at East St. Louis High School. ■

PERFECT WEEKEND
THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND
09/07 – 09/08/13
MARY AND RICK
are in the same boat on this one
On Friday evening we typically drive to the Deer Path Inn and eat in the courtyard. We sit there as often as we can. Rick loves the boar sausage and venison sausage plate, and I have what I call the Mary salad — tomato, avocado, and arugula. They have a pinot noir we love. On Saturday morning we go back to the Deer Path Inn for breakfast with daughter Chloe Hurt (14) and son Cam (10). We make phone calls to see who wants to join us on the boat. This is our second summer with the boat; it’s a 24-foot Four Winns.
“The kids have squirt guns, they play ball and they raft … we’ll be on the lake as long as the kids allow us to.”
Mary and Rick Esp of Lake Forest enjoy heading out on Lake Michigan.
photography by joel lerner
We get to the boat launch in Lake Forest around noon. Typically we bring sandwiches that we get at Lake Forest Food & Wine. We head out to the cove (north of Lake Forest) and throw the anchor in the water. The kids have squirt guns, they play ball and they raft. When we’re not anchored they go tubing — sometimes we take strangers tubing. We’ll be on the lake as long as the kids allow us to. For dinner we order pizzas from Donati’s, and they deliver to the boat ramp. The kids eat the pizzas on towels. Then we’ll go on a sunset ride until the kids can’t keep their eyes open anymore. On Sunday morning we’ll go down to the great tiny restaurant at Forest Park Beach. They have fabulous breakfast burritos and great coffee. One of our daughter’s friends works at the stand. We have a 70-pound boxer, and we’ll walk him to the beach at Fort Sheridan. Eventually, once the kids are grown, we would like to live on a boat in the Carolinas. Mary and Rick Esp, as told to David Sweet. ■
