It presents a different challenge. “You have to finish within a minute of your time to stay a leader each year.” Pace groups are a key part of the Chicago Marathon and others, according to Paul Miller, the captain of the Nike+ Pace Team for the Bank of America Chicago Marathon. Miller said there will be more than 100 group leaders guiding over 3,000 of the race’s more than 40,000 runners to the time they hope to achieve. Some of the groups have more than one leader because of their size. There are 22 categories ranging from 3:00 to 5:45, according to the marathon’s website. “Julian (Gordon) is the perfect example of what we’re looking for,” Miller said. “We want people with accumulated running experience who are committed to helping others achieve their running goals.
