Veteran sailors race in ‘The Mac’ By Emily Spectre

T

his year marks the 107th Race to Mackinac, and three Wilmette residents — Bob O’Brien, Scott Sims and Matthew Beer — sailed in what’s known as the oldest annual freshwater distance race in the world. “The Mac” began July 10 at the Chicago Lighthouse east of Navy Pier, where more than 3,000 sailors aboard 324 sailboats departed for a 333-mile trip that ended at Mackinac Island in Michigan.
