Firefighters’ T-shirt sales doused some despair after 9/11

T
he three firefighters, all on duty, sat in a Glenview fire station and watched footage on a television 14 years ago this weekend. It stunned them. Their country was under attack. Terrorists had used commercial airplanes to serve as missiles. The missiles destroyed two buildings in Lower Manhattan and killed thousands on Sept. 11, 2001. The three firefighters wanted to board a flight for New York after the end of their shift and do whatever they could to help the victims, the New York firefighters and the civilians who had turned into courageous rescuers. “We essentially watched the whole thing happen on TV,” Lt. In dire situations, paramedics come to the rescue By JOANNA BROWN

n the seven years that firefighter/paramedic Chaten Howard has worked with the Glenview Fire Department, he’s toiled alongside military veterans, marketing executives, pilots and salesmen. He’s quite proud of the strength his team draws from these diverse professional experiences. “It really plays into our success,” said Howard, who served with the U.S. Air Force (including tours in Iraq and Qatar) before he joined the fire department. “We travel as a team because the job is physically intense and labor intensive, and you don’t know what you’re going to get into when you go out on a call. It may have been called in as a person who fell, but when you get there it’s really a cardiac arrest.” Glenview’s 70 paramedics, like Northbrook’s 60, begin each shift expecting to be challenged by the unexpected.
