Eddie Money SATURDAY 9:00 p.m.

Rickie Lee Tanner Rickie Lee Tanner is known for his high energy performances that can only be rivaled by the likes of Garth Brooks and Jerry Lee Lewis. He believes that the crowd comes to see a “show” and give his all every night to make sure that everyone leaves with a smile on their face. He truly is an original.

FEATURING

might describe him as a John Mellencamp, Bruce Springsteen, or a Tim McGraw. Rickie Lee Tanner is a Missouri native. He grew up in Belton, Missouri and currently resides just outside of Washington, Missouri. Three things matter most to Rickie Lee, God, country, and family. It is his sincere desire to support all of these things through song. If you haven’t had the chance to see him perform, don’t wait another second. It is the opportunity of a lifetime that you won’t soon forget.

Money burst onto the scene with his eponymous debut album in 1977. Fans immediately fell in love with Money’s sound, and the album, which went double platinum, featured hits like “Baby Hold On” and “Two Tickets to Paradise.” Money followed the success of his debut album with a stream of Top 40 hits, as well as some of the era’s most creative videos for songs like “Think I’m in Love” and “Shakin.” In 1986, Money released Can’t Hold Back, which featured the classic, Grammy-Nominated duet with Ronnie Spector, “Take Me Home Tonight.” The song reached number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100. The album went platinum and also featured the hit “I Wanna Go Back.” As the years have passed, Money’s blue-collar brand of Rock n Roll has managed to transcend generations and continues to move audiences today. Ask any concert attendee and they’ll tell you he retains his signature style and performs with the same passion today as he did more than 30 years ago.

Touring 42 states, 50 weeks/year, Hells/Bells salutes the driving force of AC/DC in a manner surpassed only by the real AC/DC. The Clocks Saturday 7:30 p.m. The Wichita, KS based band The Clocks arrived on the pop rock scene in 1982, and gave us one of the most identifiable songs from that time. Their song She Looks A Lot Like You was released as a 7” single, and moved up the US charts nicely, with the album making the Top 100.

Access Dance Inc. will be attending Old Shawnee Days where over thirty of Access Dance Special Needs Dancers’ will perform the jazz and tap dances they have been working on for the last 8 months.

$25,000 goal, and the historic building blocks faded into oblivion. The Wagon Master’s Heritage Corp., however, did not. Instead, its members stuck together and formed the Shawnee Historical Society. A longtime pillar of that organization, the late J. Kenneth Thomas was Shawnee’s city clerk in 1966, when another historic building preservation was launched. Charles Cooner, then plant manager for the Vita Craft Corp., came into Thomas’ ofďŹ ce one day that year and announced that Shawnee’s old territorial jail would have to be torn down to make way for an expansion project. So Thomas and the historical society swung into action, starting an effort to save the 1843 jail. Their successful effort resulted in relocation of the jail, which became the ďŹ rst building at what would become Old Shawnee Town, then Shawnee Town 1929. Funds for the jail’s move to cityowned land were gathered through the creation of a “Sheriff’s Posse,â€? made up of individuals and businesses donating at least $100 to the effort. And on July 13, 1966, the building was dedicated as part of a “Good Ol’ Summertimeâ€? celebration, which was renamed Old Shawnee Days the following year. During that year, 1967, Old Shawnee Town also took off, with the Shawnee State Bank adding a native-stone building and the Amos family building the Amos Undertakers and Cabinet Shop out of lumber from an old barn. In addition, ďŹ ve local grocery stores

donated most of the funds to build a general store, and the Shawnee Jaycees added a bandstand. As the recreated frontier town began to emerge, the Shawnee City Council adopted a resolution giving the Shawnee Historical Society to authority to operate the site. Eventually, many of the volunteers who kept Old Shawnee Town going and growing began to grow long in the tooth. “We were pedaling just about as fast as we could to keep going,â€? said Judy Owens, who along with Marilyn Breneman ran the Old Shawnee Town Trading Post gift shop. “The roofs or something always needed ďŹ xing.â€? Thus, on May 1, 1997, the Historical Society, since renamed the Friends of Shawnee Town, ceded control of the site back to the city. And in 2004, the city approved a master plan to reinvent Old Shawnee Town as Shawnee Town 1929 — a farm and town that interpret Shawnee’s post-horse-and-wagon days as a thriving truck-farming community. “They’ve changed it completely around, which suits me just ďŹ ne,â€? Owens said of the shift from a haphazard assortment of old buildings to the narrower 1920s focus. “Some older people it does not (suit).â€? Another change has been the shift in responsibility for the annual Old Shawnee Days celebrations from the Historical Society to a new nonproďŹ t, the Old Shawnee Days Society. One thing that hasn’t changed, however, is the Shawnee community’s appreciation of its past and drive to keep it alive.

Wagon master’s house served as trailhead for celebration

Story and Photo by Rob Roberts, The Dispatch

It all started with an old wagon master’s house. Younger residents of the city may take the annual Old Shawnee Days celebration, now in its 46th year, for granted. But those aware of its origins appreciate the fact that the celebration and the tourist attraction that spawned it sprang from the efforts of several residents, many now deceased, intent on preserving the area’s history for future generations.

branch of the Santa Fe Trail and served as the home of Dick Williams, who escorted wagon trains from this area to Santa Fe and other western destinations. But around a century later, it was slated to be torn down to make room for a parking lot near Shawnee Mission Parkway and Nieman Road — now the starting point for the annual Old Shawnee Days Parade. So citizens including E. Paul Amos, J. Kenneth Thomas, Dorothy Thomas, Tina Edwards and artist This sculpture by Charles Goslin and a series of historical markers pay tribute to Shawnee’s trails heritage at Pioneer Crossing Park on Shawnee Mission Parkway near Melrose Lane. Goslin was part of the 1959 effort to save a wagon master’s house that played into the start of the Old Shawnee Days celebration 46 years ago.

It started in 1959, when a group banded together as the Wagon Master’s Heritage Corp. to save a historic building from the wrecking ball. During the 1850s and early 1860s, the twostory limestone structure stood along a
