welcome
As always autumn is a busy season at The Drum and 2011 is no exception. We’re exceptionally proud to bring you an exciting array of art-forms, from music and theatre to dance, literature and workshops. We’ve got a hilarious comedy series from Upfront Café featuring some of the best, including Gina Yashere, Angie Le Mar and Leo Muhammad while our music strand features the world renowned Sufi saint Sain Zahoor, US soul sensation Eric Roberson and Qawwali singer Ansar Khalid. We’ll be hosting an eclectic mix of high quality artists performing jazz, soul, gospel, dub poetry and hip hop through Nu Century Arts’ regular Live Box series. We’re also delighted to announce the return of Andy Hamilton’s free monthly Sunday lunchtime jazz sessions, our thanks going out to the Arts Council for supporting one of Birmingham’s living legends. Our theatre strand also continues to thrive with Mahim Junction bringing 20 actors from Mumbai to showcase a Bollywood musical that has been compared favourably to Slumdog Millionaire! We’ve also programmed an exciting array of top quality performances that are great for young people including Othello which features a reverse race casting, and Look to The Sky, a gripping thriller exploring the lives of inner-city youths. And we’re developing a new in-house youth music production with our Young Gifted Brum participants. The performance, Death and The King’s Horseman, is an astonishing play which won author Wole Soyinka the Nobel Prize for Literature and will involve local drummers, dancers and rappers. October is Black History Month, and as the UK’s premier Black-led arts organisation we have been commissioned by Birmingham City Council to draw together the city’s programme of activities and coordinate a launch event. Our “Africa Calling” theme responds to the United Nations’ declaration that 2011 is the Year for Peoples of African Descent, and is designed to highlight and celebrate the struggles, achievements and contributions of Black people around the globe. We’ll be celebrating throughout the month with a range of events, films and exhibitions. So what are you waiting for? Browse our brochure and book your autumn season events today!
