welcome The Drum is the UK’s premier arts centre dedicated to the development, celebration and presentation of African, Asian and Caribbean arts and cultural activities, for the benefit of all.

This season marks the start of a new journey for The Drum, from the refreshed palette of colours and designs throughout our commercial spaces and the new cuisines available in Frontiers Café Bar to the new look of The Drum brochure. Despite the public sector cuts you’re hearing so much about, The Drum is committed, more than ever, to providing a great selection of arts and cultural activities for our audiences. So if you’ve never been before, now is a great time to come and discover something different at The Drum – and if you’re one of our regular customers, we can’t wait to see you again and show off our new look venue. So what are you waiting for? Come and support the great Birmingham arts scene that is presented at The Drum. Our summer highlights are numerous: we’re hosting a number of reggae concerts, including the show-stopping “Ram Jam” Rodigan, playing alongside King Stur Gav and The Mighty U-Roy in the dance of the year. We’re also lucky to have comedians Felix Dexter and Felicity Ethnic on the bill, while hip hop legends Slum Village will be showcasing their new line-up, living up to their reputation for slick lyrical delivery, and Avery Sunshine will add a dose of summery Atlanta soul. Many of you will remember the hit Birmingham novel Mr Soon Come: we’re turning that into a dancehall play with local actors, and in the build-up to Simmer Down in July we’ve scheduled the first Reggae Film Festival to be held in the UK, showcasing a mix of feelgood Jamaican films you won’t have seen before. For this season’s Dance programme we’ve secured Got To Dance (Sky1) semi-finalists Bolly-flex, and an extensive programme of participatory arts workshops and activities for young people. After all, our watchwords at The Drum are commonality and bringing communities together. Mukhtar Dar Director of Arts and Marketing
