welcome

The Drum is the UK’s premier Black-led arts centre dedicated to the development, presentation and celebration of African, Asian and Caribbean arts and cultural activities for the benefit of all. We are proud to welcome both the Jamaican and the American track and field teams to our great city for the 2012 Olympics. This year marks the 50th anniversary of Jamaica’s Independence. The Drum has been centrally involved in a number of strategic initiatives which celebrate the 50th anniversary and welcome the teams. This includes the Jamaica 50: Birmingham 2012 Group and its associated programme Jamaica 2012. The Drum is also supporting Jamaica in the Square: an open-air festival which runs from 2nd -12th August outside the Birmingham Town Hall.

And throughout the summer months our own Jamaica Gold season showcases the music, dance, literature, theatre, history, culture and food from one of the Caribbean’s most celebrated island. Jamaica Gold pays homage to the distinct and dynamic Jamaican culture which has undoubtly influenced and transformed not just Birmingham but the world. Many different aspects of Jamaican culture are represented. UK’s chart topping reggae group Aswad take centre stage at the Simmer Down Festival, local and international artists come together for a star studded line up for the official Jamaican Independence concert at the Tower Ballroom, while we’ll host international shows such as Ruckumbine (performed by the Jamaican state dance troupe) and the hilarious play My Big Fat Jamaican Funeral. British rapper Akala exemplifies the influence of Jamaican music in UK hip hop, the Reggae Film Festival returns with an inspiring line-up of films rooted in Kingston culture past and present, and our Champions in-conversation series traces the extraordinary life stories of leading Birmingham Jamaican pioneers. Our Kalaboration partnership programme hosts a series of visual arts seminars and a major exhibition by the internationally acclaimed Jamaican artist Michael Thompson (Freestylee: Artist Without Borders). All of this sits alongside our usual vibrant summer programme of workshops, open days, and the YGB summer school, with international highlights including the Pakistani songstress Naseebo Lal, the Ekatva dance project which features the extraordinary children from the streets of Bombay, US packages such as Shadowball and Anthony David In Concert, and the comedian Stephen K Amos – in the UK for an exclusive gig to celebrate twenty years of Upfront Comedy. So don’t miss the party. Happy 50th birthday Jamaica! Mukhtar Dar Director of Arts and Marketing

With Backing Band and Support from Nathan Adams (Tribe Records) Sat 26 May, 9pm £13.50 adv (£17.50 OTD) “As Above, So Below.” Heady stuff for an R&B album title, but the Grammy-nominated singer/ songwriter Anthony David has never been the kind of soul artist to “speak loudly, but say nothing.” His debut release, “3 Chords and The Truth”, won critical acclaim and with the Grammy-nominated duet, “Words” David and long-time friend India Arie consolidated their award-winning singing and songwriting partnership. A student of Wither’s lyricism; the masculine rhythms of Beres Hammond and Frankie Beverly; the storytelling of Slick Rick, T.I., and Jay-Z; and the blues of Lightning Hopkins, Howling Wolf, and T-bone Walker, David is ushering back the kind of masculine soul that men can identify with and that ladies can nestle up to. akala - live in concert (with full backing band) Fri 8 Jun, 9pm £12 (£10) £15 OTD Akala’s last album Doublethink was described as a shock to rap’s system – a sonic kick to the groin delivered with force and precision by someone trained in music’s equivalent of deadly martial arts. But the 26-year-old rapper, label-owner, and educator has made it his life’s work to challenge preconceptions and buck prevailing trends; and he isn’t the sort to allow himself to be fitted into any kind of mould. Breaking down the culture of cliché and stereotype that smothers the genre he loves is a major part of the mission he’s taken on, and gives impetus to this third album of pointed, perceptive hip hop music from the convention-defying emcee. 18+ restricted event

naseebo lal in concert Sat 1 Sep, 7pm £12 (£10) MOTD Naseebo Lal is regarded as a mega super star within Pakistan. She has recorded over 1500 songs, produced over 100 albums and as a playback singer, she has dominated the Punjabi film industry, with her first film being ‘Desa da Raja’ in 1999. Blessed with a strong and powerful voice, she is able to change, vary, strain, snap, twist and swing her vocal chords according to the demand of the song. Following the death of Pakistan’s supreme melody queen Madam Noor Jehan, Naseebo Lal came to fill the vacuum and established a fan base that stretched from the Northern Frontier across Pakistan and into the rest the Indian subcontinent. Her voice echoes the vibrancy, strength and boisterousness of the Punjab, her songs ring out of bustling bazaars, cinema halls and the overcrowded buses. Coming up in November Birmingham’s internationally acclaimed photographer Vanley Burke has created a body of work depicting the environments where Islamic worship takes place in The Gambia. The sites range from a temporary space adopted for prayer, local ‘Jaka’ Mosques, to the large Friday ‘Juma’ Mosques. The images reflect their religious, educational and social function as well as recognizing a wide variety of architectural styles and construction material. They were taken with the kind permission of the Mosque Elders who were delighted by the interest taken in their buildings; as such a future exhibition in the Gambia remains a long-term goal.

events critical mass Thu 10 May, 6pm School of Art The politics of representation has prompted us to continually question who and what we see and to critically reflect on those in powerful positions of cultural delivery. In this lecture, Karen Alexander, Senior Tutor, MA Curating Contemporary Art, Royal College of Art, provides an insight of the critical mass created through Inspire, a positive action programme for aspiring curators and transforming the curatorial landscape.

Kalaboration is a series of lectures, discussions and artists’ commissions.

faster, higher, stronger Thu 7 Jun, 6pm The Drum Utilising the Olympic motto of “Faster, Higher, Stronger” to draw parallels between sports and art, we ask our panel of speakers what does it take to become a successful artist in the competitive world of arts practice? Is the choice of becoming an artist a viable one in the current economic climate? What are the parameters for artistic excellence? Is cultural diversity an important facet of the art scene, in an age when identities are so fluid?

back in the day Tue 26 Jun, 6pm School of Art Prolonged austerity since 2010 has led to comparison to the 80s, high unemployment, strikes and civil unrest. Is current arts practice capturing and reflecting the socio-political situation home and abroad? What lessons can we learn from artists who began their practice during the 80s and whose work was inspired by politics and perceived inequality? Who is producing “resistance art” of today?

“brand” new generation? Thu 1 Nov, 2pm – 6pm The Drum Who are the new wave of artists practicing today and what are their influences? Can artists become a success commercially whilst addressing politics, diversity and identity? Should participating in the arts for young people be purely a creative process, or is it important to address social, environmental and cultural issues? Our panel of speakers and presentations provide an insight of the “Brand New Generation”. Artworks by Micheal Thompson
