A captivating and experimental theatre piece exploring the subject of identity through a young woman’s eyes, depicting both her emotional and physical journey to fit in today’s society. Must she conform to social expectations imposed by media representation?

Jade, a young photographer was given the opportunity by Platform 2 (a UK based charity) to be able to visit a developing country. Through Jade’s pictures and narrative the exhibition raises issues of health, HIV/AIDS, segregation and education, often overlooked by South Africa’s tourists. The Nubian Readers' Book Club If you’re a fan of books written by African, African Caribbean and African American authors, then join the Nubian Readers’ Book Club. They meet on the last Friday of each month to share and discuss opinions on a variety of genres, authors and writing styles.

Beginners welcome Capoeira is an exciting Afro-Brazilian art-form containing elements of dance, martial arts, music, song, acrobatics and trickery. Indian vocal music sessions are suitable for all abilities, and students will be taught appropriately depending on their level. The classes are delivered by the renowned vocal teacher Sanyogita Kumari and explore all forms of Indian music from classical Khayal to folk singing. Students will be taught Raga systems, voice training, improvisation and how to compose their own music.

A Bhangra Dance Workout incorporating moves from the Punjab, combined with modern hip hop and even ballet. Our new Bhangra dance sessions led by Parv Kaur offer participants the chance to learn about South Asian culture whilst getting fit! Dawn Penn

Dawn Penn stormed the charts in the early 90s with a dancehall-influenced remake of her signature song You Don’t Love Me (No, No, No). It reached No 3 in the UK charts and hit No 1 in her native Jamaica. It became one of reggae’s most sampled covered songs including recordings by Kano, Stephan Marley and Rihanna. The Drum and Friendly Fire Music present:

Tippa Irie backed by the Friendly Fire Band

Benin City’s vocalist Musa Okwonga states it’s difficult to coin exactly what style of music the six – piece outfit Benin City produces. Performing alongside saxophone, trombone, drums and an electric cello, what comes out is a vigorous fusion – or “Venn diagram” as Okwonga labels it – of Afro-beat, jazz, hip-hop and anything beyond that. This band has the swagger to match OutKast and James Brown, so get down to The Drum to check out this unique experience!

Tippa Irie first came to prominence in the early eighties as an MC on the south London reggae Sound system, Saxon Studio International. He achieved his first national exposure on BBC Radio 1 in the mid 1980s, with the singles “It’s Good To Have The Feeling You’re The Best” and “Complain Neighbour”, and in more recent years has worked with Black Eyed Peas, Alexander O’Neal, Long Beach Dub All Stars, and Chali 2na.

Young d e t f i g Brum A programme of FREE creative workshops focusing on digital media, singing, spoken & written word, dance and drama for children and young people aged 8 -18. Workshops focus on developing practical skills whilst having fun and participants have the opportunity to achieve an Arts Award. From January children, young people & their parents are invited to join our steering group and help make decisions about the programme, website and venue. Activities during the Easter holiday will focus on our new Heritage Lottery funded project

‘The Journey of the Drum’ and young people are invited to take part in a musical journey from historical West Africa to the inner cities of contemporary UK. Participants will work with master drummers, DJ’s, oral historians and archivists to explore the significance of African beats in Hip Hop, Drum ‘n’ Bass, Grime and Dubstep. We are also looking for volunteers to support this project and can offer training, paid expenses and valuable work experience in return for your time and enthusiasm.

To celebrate the work created to date as part of the Olympics and Paralympics inspired MOB project we would like to invite you all to join us at The Drum and be part of the FREE creative disturbances taking over the whole of the building this February. Fun for all the family, young and old.

“We are planning to create a variety of MOBbing activities which will take place in February half term for the week. We are going to take over the whole Drum and MOB it!!! For one week only we are all part of the MOB. NO ONE ESCAPES. We are going to decorate The Drum using different pictures and videos of MOBsters. Every single room will be MOBbed up with different Olympic Games that represent the whole MOBbing experience. Each room will represent a sport with different equipment, costumes, pictures and videos that advertise the sport. In some of the rooms we will have different activities for people to do such as long jump, table tennis, wii sports. We will hold events and activities suitable for all the family during this week.” The MOB
