In addition to our popular artistic programme, for this autumn we’ve put together a series of special events and activities, which as part of Black History Month, seek to celebrate the struggles and achievements of African, Asian and Caribbean communities. BirminStrong takes pride in Birmingham as a multicultural city, it builds on the rich histories in which diverse communities have forged common cause and come together in the face of adversity. We examine and explore through arts and cultural activities some of the underlying causes and tensions which seek to divide us along ethnic and religious lines, in doing so we seek to reaffirm our commitment to making Birmingham united and Birmingham strong. Look for the BirminStrong logo for details of events.

ZeroSeefr with Anglo Sikh Heritage Trail and The Drum presents
The Maharajah and the Kohinoor After a highly successful premiere last year this exciting show returns to The Drum for one night only. Charting one of the most illustrious episodes in British history The Maharajah and the Kohinoor is a touching tale of love and loyalty. The play follows the story of Duleep Singh, Maharajah of Lahore and King of the Sikh Empire, who was deposed at the age of eleven and sent to England. Separated from his mother he arrived on the shores of England and was immediately adopted by Queen Victoria. Encouraged by Her Majesty, Duleep Singh established solid relationships with the Royal family over the years. However, injustices and insincere intentions eventually drove him into the throws of exploitative meddlers who offered allegiance but left him isolated. He died penniless and alone in a desolate hotel in Paris in 1893. Image Credit: Copyright The Royal Collection

Freedom In Chains offers an outstanding example of contemporary popular African cinema featuring some of Nollywood’s biggest stars. This powerful drama weaves the story of three women each from different social backgrounds but they all have one thing in common - the tragic experience of domestic abuse.
A fascinating exposé of Florida’s sugar cane industry, H-2 WORKER reveals the systematic exploitation of Caribbean labourers by the Florida sugar industry from World War II through the 1990s. Each year more than 10,000 foreign workers were granted temporary guest worker (“H-2”) visas to spend six brutal months cutting sugar cane near Lake Okeechobee. They were housed in overcrowded barracks, denied adequate treatment for frequent on-the-job injuries and paid less than the minimum wage. Faced with deportation and soaring unemployment in their home countries, workers had little recourse but to silently accept these deplorable conditions. Following ten years of bloody civil war the President and Controller of a rebel army are determined to end conflict. A celebration of the truce is arranged, but cynicism remains on both sides and tension mounts.
This dense and complex drama explores the conflicting forces of family, social convention and love. Saga returns to his home village after two years away to discover Nogma, the girl promised to him in marriage, has not entirely willingly, married his father. The two rekindle their attachment but on being discovered to have broken societal taboos on incest or adultery, a chain of inevitably tragic events are set in motion.
Burning An Illusion A young British-born Black woman finds her aspirations of comfortable, respectable married life called into question when her partner is sent down for assaulting a police officer. Her political consciousness grows as she finds strength through a Black women’s group, asserting her needs while supporting and planning a future with her partner. Dir: Menelik Shabazz (1981) Running Time: 101mins Certificate 15
From Colin Prescod’s four films collectively titled Struggles for Black Community comes Southall, A Town under Siege. This historical film focuses on how Southall organised to resist racist and fascist attacks between 1976 and 1981. Southall's militancy had been initiated by community organisations of the 1950s, created to help Black workers combat racism in the workplace as well as to deal with discrimination in the community. And as state racism increased, the community fashioned and forged new weapons of struggle. The screening is followed by a discussion with the film’s director Colin Prescod Dir: Colin Prescod Running Time: 38mins No Certificate

“Meri Kahani Sono” (Hear My Story) A Pakistani short film festival Young filmmakers from across Pakistan were invited to submit films, which for them reflected the extraordinary lives of ordinary Pakistanis. A panel of six committee members in Pakistan selected the films especially for screening at The Drum. At a time when Pakistan is constantly portrayed in the Western media as a ‘failed state’ supposedly synonymous with the ‘war on terror’ these films provide a timely alternative representation from the perspective of young Pakistanis. Come and see these films and hear the stories of ordinary people as they go about their daily lives in their extraordinary homeland. A national UK tour has been organised by The Drum. Please contact the Drum Box Office on 0121 333 2444 if you are interested in organising screenings. The Drum acknowledges help and support from Durriya Kazi and Sarwar Mushtaq.

Birmingham Photospace presents
B-Strong
Birmingham’s People
By Damian Brown
Birmingham’s People is an exciting new exhibition showing the vibrant and diverse population of the city in a set of new portraits by local photographers. This exhibition captures a glimpse of visitors to Birmingham's Artsfest during the weekend of 11-13th September 2009. The exhibition examines how other people see us and how we see ourselves and promises to provide a fascinating view of a city celebrating the best of the regions' arts.
B-Strong is a major new exhibition commissioned by The Drum as part of the BirminStrong and Black History Month Season. In a culturally diverse city like Birmingham, the impact and positive contribution that African, African Caribbean and Asian artists have brought to the city and also to the arts fraternity has been remarkable. From the music world right through to the theatre world, Black British artists have transformed the different artistic genres and made it their own. Giving us a flavour of what it means to be Black and British through their creative ideas and bodies of work in today’s society. This photographic exhibition captures the essence of Black Birmingham based artists through a series of portraits, which documents their everyday lives, living and working in Birmingham.

Multicultural…ism, schism and Racism Is multiculturalism a good thing or a bad thing? Immigration has transformed Britain, making it a more vibrant, cosmopolitan nation. But have multicultural policies also left it more divided? How should we deal with questions of free speech and religious freedom in a multicultural society? And has multiculturalism helped or hindered the struggle for equality? Writer, lecturer and broadcaster Kenan Malik and author of The End of Tolerance, Arun Kundnani debate the vexed question of multiculturalism, racism and equality.
International producer and performer Khiza, presents a special Eid show featuring artists that he has produced including some from his latest album. The evening also includes Birmingham’s favourite Pothowari/Phari Sher group Azad Kashmir. Compere and host for the evening are Zeb Qureshi and Changis Raja from BBC Asian Network.

Admission £5 one session/£8 for two sessions If there is any concept universally capable of uniting human beings it is ‘music’. It is the only concept that knows no race, ideology or any other human condition whatsoever. For this reason, Afro Cubanisimo would like to introduce ‘Afro-Cubano Son’ commercially known as Salsa to most. Salsa takes different forms, traditional and commercial, Afro Cubanisimo has chosen the traditional way and own method. The method will be broken down for you into three elements: The Clave, The Rhythm and The Body.
oncentration in the Clave based on the African rhythm which is the 1. The Clave C foundation of this dance.
2. The Rhythm 3. The Body
Learn to listen, live and love the music and then interpret through the dance.
The body needs to be able to accept the movement, and then express it freely.
thirty
When you have these 3 points under control, you will dance differently, see yourself differently and people will see you differently.
30
Love yourself and you love what you are doing. That is the only way you will enjoy dancing. For that purpose and many other reasons, learn to dance the ‘Afro Cuban Son’.
Learn with the BEST and be the BEST!
