Murray
is a small town with big dining options. Whether you are looking for down-home Southern cooking, eclectic choices or just want to grab a cup of coffee, we’ve got you covered.
When is the best time to dine in Murray? Lunch, of course! Don’t let the looks of the building fool you, Sammon’s Bakery is a local favorite. You won’t regret ordering a cheeseburger on a mouth-watering homemade bun, so big that no one has ever left Sammon’s hungry. For those whose diets won’t let them partake in a burger, HRH Dumplin’s will hit the spot. Soups, sandwiches, casseroles, oversized rolls, and of course, dumplins are some of the most popular menu items. Anyone close to campus should visit The Burrito Shack. The beach theme inside creates a relaxed atmosphere, perfect for having lunch with friends. Stop by Jasmine, featuring Thai and Asian cuisine and experience one of their many varieties of sushi. Kentucky knows good BBQ, and Murray is no exception. Find piled-high sandwiches, BBQ nachos and the best potato salad around at Bad Bob’s BBQ. Of course, it wouldn’t be the South without some good home cooking. Mary’s Kitchen has delicious plate lunches with all the down-home food you can eat. For those looking for a caffeine fix, Murray offers great coffee in a variety of settings. At University Book and Bean, visitors can sip their coffee while browsing the latest books. For those with less time to spare, Fidalgo Bay, which has a drive-through window, offers an assortment of snacks to go along with the coffee.

Downtown Murray used to be a place to trade livestock or goods, buy groceries, see the doctor, board a bus, sell tobacco crops, get a prescription filled or see a movie. Although times have changed, downtown is still as vibrant as ever. The court square is home to a unique variety of retail shops, restaurants and events.
Rudy’s, on the square, is open for breakfast and lunch featuring good, home-style Southern cooking. It offers made-from-scratch breakfast each morning and plate lunches every day. Find authentic, madeto-order Chinese food at Happiness, also located on the square. Lunch specials feature an entree with rice and two sides, all for a reasonable price. Chicago-style cuisine can be found at Mugsy’s Hideout, with specialties such as deep-dish pizza, Italian sausage sandwiches and toasted cheese ravioli. How does downtown Murray maintain its charm? Murray Main Street, an organization working to preserve and strengthen the area, continually works to revitalize downtown through renovation projects. The organization also organizes a variety of community events and activities on the court square that allow community members and visitors to experience downtown at its finest. The Downtown Saturday Market fills the court square with fruits, veggies, pies, treats, flowers, arts, crafts and other products every Saturday (7 am - noon) during the months of May through October.

Downtown Events I scream, you scream – well, you know the saying! Ice cream is one of America’s favorite treats, and what could be better than free ice cream? At the Ice Cream Festival, sample one of the many crazy flavors of Purity Ice Cream for free. The square is packed with ice cream, food vendors, inflatables, rides and other family-friendly activities. Main Street Merriment brings warmth and holiday cheer and spreads it throughout the downtown area. This event takes place the first Friday in December and is a great way to kick-off the Christmas season. First, visit Santa on the courthouse lawn while watching the lighting of the community tree. Then, browse one of the many downtown businesses that stay open late that evening. The Robert O. Miller Conference Center hosts music, food, hot chocolate and beautiful Christmas decor. Dickens’ Alley transforms a normal alley into a beautifully-lit 17th Century London passageway. Enjoy pony rides, storytelling and a “pub” that serves warm soup and other food. Keep an eye out for carolers dressed in period costume.

Ohio Star 400 Faxon Rd. Calloway County Created to match the color scheme of the barn, this quilt was one of the first created in the series.
Mariner Compass 6321 Hwy 94 W. Calloway County The barn was built off winnings from a poker game in the 1930s, and the family continues to maintain the quality of the barn to this day.
Texas Lonestar 4384 VanCleave Dr. Calloway County Given as a birthday present from the owner’s daughter, the square was painted from a photo of her mother’s favorite quilt made by her grandmother.

overing 180 acres of land, the Murray-Calloway County Parks system holds a swimming complex, batting cages, nine baseball and softball fields, a soccer complex with 15 fields, three basketball courts, 10 covered pavilions, five playgrounds, a youth climbing wall, an outdoor amphitheater, three-and-a-half miles of developed nature trails, a disc golf course and a dog park. The Central Park Disc Golf Course was complete in 2006 and is becoming one of the parks most used facilities. Disc Golf, a rapidly growing sport, is similar to traditional golf but with Frisbeelike discs. The 18-hole course has a total length of more than 5,200 feet with a par of 58, and is great for experienced players or those new to the game. Have an adventure with your pet by bringing your dog to the Dog Park, located in Central Park. The park is divided into two sections, one for large dogs and one for small dogs. Canines can go through the built-in obstacle course, walk the beam, jump through hoops and play other games just for dogs.

The American Society of Golf Architects designated the Frances E. Miller Memorial Golf Course as one of the best designed 18-hole courses in America. It presents a unique challenge for competitive and recreational golfers alike. Measuring 6,592 yards from the championship tees, the par-71 layout has two distinct nines which require a wide array of shot-making. The outward nine is set on hilly terrain and requires pinpoint accuracy from tee to green, whereas the inward half rewards length and accurate long-iron play. The facility also offers two large practice putting greens, as well as a wide twolevel practice tee and a spacious 315-yard driving range.

In 2001, Murray was selected as one of only eight cities in the state as a Certified Retirement Community by the Kentucky Tourism Development Cabinet. Nationally, Where to Retire magazine featured Murray in a cover story in 2007, naming it a “low-cost haven.” RetirementAmerica.com also rated Murray highly, saying, “If you are seeking a well-rounded community with plenty of outdoor recreation, low housing costs with a four season climate, then Murray may be just what you’re looking for.” Murray’s medical facilities work hard to keep residents safe. More than 70 physicians representing 28 medical specialties are practicing at Murray-Calloway County Hospital. In 2010, the hospital opened its new South Tower, a 158,000 square foot modern facility built to provide health care services for the region for years to come. Murray was named one of the 100 Best Communities for Young People for the fourth time. According to the America’s Promise website, the community has continuously made the list because of its “emphasis on strengthening families and improving outcomes for children and youth by identifying needs, opportunities and priorities for future action; promoting effective city and school collaboration; encouraging and supporting youth voice, engagement and leadership; and measuring progress over time.”

Murray State University offers a quality education to more than
10,000 students from all over the world. MSU is accredited by 16 different professional accreditation councils that measure the prestige of its undergraduate and graduate programs. The friendly atmosphere, high-quality faculty and small class size give students the opportunity to grow as individuals and work together as a community. Murray State has been nationally recognized for its residential college system, focusing not only on providing students with a quality education, but also on placing them in an environment where lifelong friendships can be established. In the tradition of Ivy League schools, MSU was the first public university with a successful, comprehensive residential college program. Studies show that by being part of a residential college, students will be more satisfied with college life, have a higher GPA and, most importantly, are far more likely to graduate. Murray State University has been consistently ranked for its highquality, affordable education and unique setting. In 2010, Forbes placed MSU on its “America’s Best Colleges” listing and rated the university a “Best College Buy” for its quality and affordability/value. In addition, the University has been highly ranked by the Princeton Review, Money Guide, Kiplinger’s Personal Finance, Southern Living, Outdoor Life, a Carnegie Mellon study and the Kaplan college guide. The fine education of MSU is not limited to Murray. Five extended campuses in Paducah, Hopkinsville, Madisonville, Ft. Campbell and Henderson provide the same quality instruction found on the main campus. Murray State has been recognized for some of its top programs including Occupational Safety and Health, Music Business, Nursing, Veterinary Technician and Masters of Business Administration.
