Visit Historic Downtown

Downtown Murray use to be a place to trade livestock or goods, buy groceries, see the doctor, board a bus, sell tobacco crops, get a prescription filled or see a movie. Although times have changed, downtown is still as vibrant as ever. The court square is home to a unique variety of retail shops, restaurants and events. Rudy’s, on the square, is open for breakfast and lunch featuring good, home-style southern cooking. It offers a made-from-scratch breakfast each morning and plate lunches every day. Chicago-style cuisine can be found at Mugsy’s Hideout, with specialties such as deep-dish pizza, Italian sausage sandwiches and toasted cheese ravioli. How does downtown Murray maintain its charm? Murray Main Street, an organization working to preserve and strengthen the area, continually works to revitalize downtown through renovation projects. The organization also organizes a variety of community events and activities on the court square that allow community members and visitors to experience downtown at its finest.

Downtown Events On the Saturday before Easter, downtown fills with children for the annual Easter on the Square event. The Easter Bunny makes an appearance as 5,000 Easter eggs are hunted on the grounds. The Downtown Saturday Market fills the court square with fruits, veggies, pies, treats, flowers, arts, crafts and other products every Saturday (7 am - noon) during the months of May through October. This ritual has become the social gathering for locals on the weekends. Meet old friends and make new ones while tasting the best our region has to offer.

Main Street Merriment brings warmth and holiday cheer, and spreads it throughout the downtown area. This event takes place the first Friday in December and is a great way to kick-off the Christmas season. First, visit Santa on the courthouse lawn while watching the lighting of the community tree. Then, browse one of the many downtown businesses that stay open late that evening. The Robert O. Miller Conference Center hosts music, food, hot chocolate and beautiful Christmas decor. Dickens’ Alley transforms a normal alley into a beautifully-lit 17th Century London passageway. Enjoy carriage rides, storytelling and a “pub” that serves warm soup and other food. Keep an eye out for carolers dressed in period costumes.

Don’t miss the Zac Brown Band coming February 8, 2014. Quilt Trail The very first barn quilt trail was established in Ohio in 2001. The movement quickly spread to Iowa, Tennessee and Kentucky. Now, almost every state in the country has a quilt trail. In 2010, a few barn quilts already existed in Calloway County, but until then there was no formal trail. Since then, the trail has grown rapidly and there are now more than 40 quilt squares in Murray and Calloway County. The barn quilts are scattered throughout the county, making for a scenic country drive. In the city limits, there are many quilt squares that are free standing or hanging on the side of businesses. The county barn quilts have been divided into three

separate trails for driving convenience. Each quilt pattern has its own unique story behind it. To learn more about each barn and quilt, visitors can go to murrayquilts.tumblr.com or pick up a brochure from the Murray Convention and Visitors Bureau at 201 S. 4th St. (which has its own special quilt square, “Coming Home”).

Fine Art Located on the campus of Murray State University, the Clara M. Eagle Art Gallery is a multi-level exhibition space allowing visitors and locals to experience art first-hand. The gallery features diverse shows, including everything from art classics to contemporary, from student work to national juried shows. Outdoor Recreation Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley, joined by a free-flowing canal, form one of the largest man-made bodies of water in North America. Combined, the two lakes have more than 4,000 miles of shoreline and more than 3,000 miles of water. The lakes provide fun-filled outdoor activities such as boating, swimming, fishing, hiking and camping. Kentucky Lake is known as the “Crappie Capital” of the world. A little-known fact is crappie can be caught year round. The lake also holds other fish such as blue gill, spots, red ear, shell cracker, stripers, saugers and of course, bass! Catch one of Kentucky Lake’s exceptional population of largemouth bass, or one of the smallmouth bass which can reach five pounds or larger. Opportunities abound for both back country and modern camping, as well as horseback riding, biking, hiking, boating and swimming. Or, go hunting during one of the area’s 250 days of hunting season. Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area offers 170,000 acres of wildlife, history and outdoor recreation opportunities, wrapped by 300 miles of undeveloped shoreline. Sit under the stars and learn about our universe at the Golden Pond Planetarium and Observatory. In the summer of 2014, the planetarium will be offering “Laser Light” shows. Get in touch with nature at the Elk and Bison Prairie, where a native habitat lost more than a century ago is being carefully restored. At the Woodlands Nature Station, guests can enjoy a guided hike or canoe excursion. The Nature Station also offers an indoor discovery center as well as live wildlife in its backyard exhibits.

overing 180 acres of land, the Murray-Calloway County Parks system holds a swimming complex, batting cages, nine baseball and softball fields, a soccer complex with 15 fields, three basketball courts, 10 covered pavilions, five playgrounds, a youth climbing wall, an outdoor amphitheater, three-and-a-half miles of developed nature trails, a disc golf course and a dog park. The Central Park Disc Golf Course was complete in 2006 and is becoming one of the parks most used facilities. Disc Golf, a rapidly growing sport, is similar to traditional golf but with Frisbee-like discs. The 18-hole course has a total length of more than 5,200 feet with a par of 58, and is great for experienced players or those new to the game.

The American Society of Golf Architects designated the Frances E. Miller Memorial Golf Course as one of the best designed 18-hole courses in America. It presents a unique challenge for competitive and recreational golfers alike. Measuring 6,592 yards from the championship tees, the par-71 layout has two distinct nines which require a wide array of shot-making. The outward nine is set on hilly terrain and requires pinpoint accuracy from tee to green, whereas the inward half rewards length and accurate long-iron play. The facility also offers two large practice putting greens, as well as a wide two-level practice tee and a spacious 315-yard driving range.

Have an adventure with your pet by bringing your dog to the Dog Park, located in Central Park. The park is divided into two sections, one for large dogs and one for small dogs. Canines can go through the built-in obstacle course, walk the beam, jump through hoops and play other games just for dogs.

Friendliest Small Town in America Every Murray local knows people who say, “I left after college, but I just had to come back. Something was pulling at me.” That something goes beyond MSU Racer pride. That “something” is deeply rooted in the people of this area. That something is Murray’s friendliness. In the summer of 2012, Murray was named “Friendliest Small Town in America” in the Best of the Road competition. The Murray Convention and Visitors Bureau had taken the lead in responding to questions and hosting the team that made the final evaluation of the six finalist cities. The Murray CVB would be the first to point out that any number of organizations, officials and “just plain folks” joined in the effort to show the nation what makes Murray special. Having less than twenty-four hours warning, the Murray CVB was set on the fast-track to make a successful site visit for Rand McNally and USA Today. In a matter of hours, word spread through town of a community picnic set in the park for a “Welcome to Murray” celebration. The CVB staff organized the last-minute party, community members willingly changed their weekend plans, made phone calls spreading the word and arrived in style with pot-lock dishes of southern specialties. No questions were asked; people just did what was needed to pull together and succeed.

As the Best of the Road team drove toward the Playhouse in the Park pavilion, community members were lined-up across the large deck. Waving and smiling to the team, the Murray people were genuinely displaying the special character of the community. Everyone was eating, sharing and laughing together in the natural way Murray does. No strangers are found in Murray. Even the Best of the Road team was treated like family from the moment they arrived. Jokes and laughter filled the patio as children played and enjoyed the summer evening.

It is the small things that make Murray friendly. A card or a hug offered in honest faith, rooted in the foundation of the community, creates the something: the unending compassion and love offering a life full of joy. The something lives deep in the people, making everyday worthy and special. It is the kind words, simple smiles and easy gestures that make even a stranger feel at home.

Being the “Friendliest” town is something that comes naturally to the small university community. Consisting of a large retirement and family population mixed with university students, Murray provides a unique variety of customs and cultures nestled next to Kentucky Lake, offering sweet, southern charm.

to being named to the 2013 America’s Top Colleges list, Forbes also designated Murray State as one of “America’s Top 100 Best Buy” colleges for the fourth year in a row. G.I. Jobs magazine ranked MSU a “2014 Military Friendly School.” The list honors the top 20 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools nationwide that are doing the most to embrace America’s veterans as students.

Sports The greatest tradition in the Ohio Valley Conference. This is how the Murray State Racers strive to be known. With OVC championships in 20 sports, it’s not hard to see why the Racers are so popular. The university is home to programs including football, basketball, crosscountry, baseball, golf, rifle, track and field, volleyball, soccer and tennis. Racer Nation, as MSU fans like to collectively call themselves, has grown quickly over the past few years, especially during the historic 2011-2012 men’s basketball season. That season, the Racers were the last undefeated team in Division I basketball, and they went 31-2, casting Murray State in the national spotlight. Source: murraystate.edu

The Chronicle of Higher Education named Murray State one of its “2013 Great Colleges to Work For.” The designation specifically recognizes MSU for “Professional/Career Development Programs,” “Respect and Appreciation” and “Teaching Environment.”
