HISTORY Try to Remember urray, Kentucky is a charming college town sitting in the heart of Calloway County. It enjoys a rich history with buildings and sites that are over a century old. That’s not to say that it is stuck in the past, however. Murray State University is a prime technology center and the town’s industry and agriculture are always moving forward. Its history tells the story of its future.

M

Calloway County was originally formed in 1822 and it included the area that is now Marshall County. The state legislature divided the area into two separate counties in 1842. The county seat had been in Wadesboro, but a new location was needed after the separation. The site that was selected lay at the geographic center of the county, a village named Murray. Murray was formed on an 80-acre plot and was subdivided into 137 business and residential lots with eight streets total in the village. The town began as a post office and trading center in the 1820s. At that time it was called Williston in honor of James Willis, an early settler. Later the name was changed to Pooltown after local merchant Robert Pool. The name was changed yet again to Pleasant Springs before its incorporation on January 17, 1844, when the present name was adopted to honor U.S. Congressman John L. Murray. During the Civil War Murray and Calloway County were officially declared neutral. However it was a center for intense Confederate feelings. There were not many large conflicts that took place in the town of Murray, but the citizens did see some guerrilla warfare. In January of 1862, Union forces under Gen. Lew Wallace (later known as the author of Ben Hur) traveled through Murray and advanced on Fort Heiman in an assault that eventually led to the fall of Forts Henry and Donelson. It was from this victory that Commanding General Ulysses S. Grant

Confederacy, is the only Confederate monument in the south that does not face squarely north.

Today, Murray is one of the country’s finest small towns.

In the spring of 1862 the general of the Union forces stationed in Paducah, Kentucky made his way to the Tennessee River, taking whatever property he wanted from the Murray townspeople. A diary by Josh Ellison states that in the winter of 1864 a squad of soldiers from Paducah burned the east side of the court square on Friday night, and they burned the north side of the court square on Monday.

In the early 1870s the population of Murray was almost 800. It was a thriving and bustling business center boasting six retail stores, stream flour and sawmills, wagon and carriage factory, tanyard, twelve mechanical shops, two tobacco factories, two hotels, two churches, and a newspaper, The Murray Gazette. The Murray Institute offered a fine education to both men and women. Education, it seems was always important to the citizens of Murray.

As many as 500 men joined the Confederate ranks, with approximately 200 joining the Union. A monument on the northeast side of the court square stands to this day, honoring the Confederate veterans. The monument, a gift from the United Daughters of the

Murray was home to Nathan B. Stubblefield, an eccentric inventor who, at one time, was credited by many with the invention of the telephone in the late 1890s. In fact, he never claimed anything more than to have invented “wireless telephony.” However, today

and more than $117,000 in donations to support the initial construction. All the money was raised by local businesses and individuals, and proved to the legislative committee that the school would have strong local support. In 1922, construction began on what is now Wrather Hall, the first building for Murray State Normal School. Murray residents consider the University to be a natural part of the community. As many as 10,000 students on the main campus and several satellite campuses throughout western Kentucky pursue an education which has been ranked as one of the best among public colleges and universities in America.

The city continued to prosper as an agricultural center, but its distance from a large, navigable river limited its potential for heavy industry. The railroad provided access for manufacturing, but was more important for carrying the tons of tomatoes, corn, wheat and tobacco.

Today, Murray is one of the country’s finest small towns. It has received several community awards including “Playful City USA” for the last two years, and “100 Best Communities for Young People” three years running. It is consistently named one of the best places to retire. With more than 16,000 residents, a low crime rate, favorable cost of living, solid and affordable housing opportunities, great schools and access to some of the best recreational and leisure features in the country, Murray has justified the faith of its founders and made a place in American history. O

Then, just after the First World War, the Kentucky Legislature announced plans to strengthen public education in the western part of the Commonwealth by creating a new teachers’ college or “Normal School.” Several cities submitted proposals in an attempt to be designated as the site of the school. Murray, led by skilled politician and businessman Rainey T. Wells, not only submitted a proposal, but backed it up with deeds to lands for the campus, a large brick house to serve as the president’s home,

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT Let Us Entertain You he cultures in Murray, Kentucky are worlds away from those in New York City. Growing up in Murray, Jennifer Fairbanks had a moderately suburban, small town upbringing. She went to Murray High School and attended Murray State University, where she studied drawing with Dale Leys and painting with Bob Head. She also studied privately with Joy Thomas during her time in Murray.

T

After leaving, she decided to travel to another world. During a trip to New York (initially for a short, two month stay) Fairbanks liked what she saw and ended up staying for eleven years. She recently returned to Murray to open her own art gallery, Gallery 109 & Fairbanks Studio. The studio is housed in a newly renovated downtown building. There is no denying the varied cultures and attitudes represented in her work. When the gallery opened it featured artists like Benjamin McVey from Texas, Mark Gonzales from Brooklyn, Annie Wildey from Great Britain, Sachie Koyama from Japan and Daniel Col贸n from Puerto Rico. She met her artists along her creative journey and they just happened to complete her colorful mix of ideas. For a small town, Murray offers tourists and citizens cultural opportunities that are usually only available in larger cities. Jennifer Fairbanks is proof. Museums and galleries, such as Gallery 109 & Fairbanks Studio, as well as live theater, special events and more are all available in Murray. The Murray Art Guild, a local, non-profit educational and cultural organization, offers classes and work-

shops to help develop the talents of local artists. Classes range from photography to drawing to rug weaving, and are taught for multiple skill-levels. For those who enjoy viewing art more than creating it, the guild displays several shows at the Robert O. Miller Conference Center, located on the court square. Located on the campus of Murray State University, the Clara M. Eagle Art Gallery is a multi-level exhibition space that houses around 1,200 permanent artworks. From art classics to contemporary styles, from student work to national shows, the gallery features diverse shows that allow visitors to experience art first-hand. The Curris Center Gallery, also on campus, is home to a wide variety of exhibits throughout the year. Both galleries are free to the public. The Wrather West Kentucky Museum is located in the first building constructed on the campus of Murray State University and has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places. The museum, which is free to the public, highlights the social, economic and cultural development of the Jackson

PEOPLE Imagine All The People urray is overflowing with small town southern charm. The residents are famous for being friendly and welcoming to all visitors. The town isn’t isolated, though. Murray State University brings in students from across the country and around the globe. Murray is a fine blend of classic Americana and international flavor that appeals to a wide variety of people.

M

“I came here to do a job and then get the heck out of this little town,” said one resident, “And that was 35 years ago. It’s the people.” Another visitor comes back to spend the fall and spring almost every year. “I love the way people speak to you, and wave when they pass you on a narrow country road,” she said. “I’ve never been around such friendly people.” And Murray has its share of people who have made a big difference in the world. We can only scratch the surface with these names, so ask around; you’ll hear more names, from actress and model Molly Sims to pro footballer Shane Andrus. Go ahead; ask.

TOURISM tures Squealin’ on the Square, a professional barbecue competition. Endorsed by the Kansas City Barbeque Society, the competition draws more than 25 teams from across the nation each year. They compete for honors with their chicken, ribs, pulled pork, brisket, and even dessert. Bacon in the Sun is a barbeque competition for the local brush-wielding grillers. It’s a good old-fashioned backyard competition involving chicken, ribs and dessert.

The World's Biggest Fish Fry

Less than an hour to the south is Paris, Tennessee. For over fifty years Paris has held their annual Fish Fry festival, now the largest in the world. With over five tons of fish fried up in the modern event, the festival lasts for a full week and now includes a carnival, a rodeo, beauty pageants, parades, arts and crafts, and, of course, plenty of catfish and hushpuppies. The Fish Fry evolved from "Mule Day," which originated in 1938. Farmers came to town on the first Monday in April to trade their mules and other farm products, do their shopping, and enjoy the fellowship of their friends. Early in the 1950's, the Chamber of Commerce took over Mule Day and started looking for another event to replace it as tractors took the place of mules.

The American Quilters Society National Quilt Show Paducah, Kentucky, just 45 minutes to the north of Murray, is a Mecca for quilters and quilt enthusiasts during the AQS Annual Quilt Show & Contest each April. More than 30,000 quilters from 47 states and 11 countries attended the 25th Anniversary AQS Quilt Show in 2009. While officially the event is a gigantic Quilt Show & Contest, it functions as an annual convention for quilters. The annual Quilt Show & Contest includes classes, special events, demonstrations, and an extravaganza of quilt exhibits. The shopping opportunities for quilts and quiltrelated materials are extensive with over 300 vendor booths. Over 400 quilt contests are conducted during the show making this event "The World Series of Quilting." And you won't want to miss the return of Paducah's Dogwood Trail. Generally the dogwood bloom peaks around the middle of April and lasts into the early part

TOURISM of the Quilt Show. On the official opening day, there will be a reception and complimentary tour hosted by Paducah Ambassadors and the Paducah Bus system. Since its beginning, the Trail has grown from two blocks to a twelve-mile tour of the West End lasting an hour and a half with another 12 miles of alternate routes.

The Wickliffe Mounds West of Murray, about an hour and a half away, is the Wickliffe Mounds State Historic Site. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it is a designated Kentucky Archaeological Landmark and is a common ground for Native American Indian cultures, past and present. Wickliffe Mounds is the archaeological site of a prehistoric Native American village of the Mississippian mound builders. Located on a bluff overlooking the Mississippi river, the village was occupied from about 1100 to 1350 AD. The Mississippians built a complex settlement with permanent houses and earthen mounds situated around a central plaza. They also buried their dead here with dignity and respect. After the 1300s the Mississippians at Wickliffe Mounds abandoned the village. Today Murray State University uses the site for training students and research. The museum consists of excavated mounds with archaeological features, Mississippian burial practices, displays of artifacts from the site and a mural of a Mississippian village. The Ceremonial Mound is intact and can be accessed for a beautiful bird’s eye view of the park. A Hands-On Activity Touch Table rounds out a museum tour where visitors can use prehistoric tools, and learn about Mississippian artifacts, technology and their environment.

Mammoth Cave National Park A longer daytrip to the east, about three and a half hours, brings you to Mammoth Cave, the longest cave system in the world. With a confirmed 365 miles of passageways Mammoth Cave is so long that if the second and third longest caves in the world were joined together, it would still be the planet's longest cave and have nearly 100 miles left over. Mammoth Cave National Park preserves the cave system and a part of the Green River region of south central Kentucky.

The Park offers visitors several cave tours. Many of the most famous features of the cave, such as Grand Avenue, Frozen Niagara, and Fat Man's Misery, can be seen on lighted tours ranging from one to six hours in length. Two tours, lit only by visitor-carried paraffin lamps, are popular alternatives to the electric-lit routes. Several "wild" tours venture away from the developed parts of the cave into muddy crawls and dusty tunnels. Mammoth Cave National Park also has three developed campgrounds and more than a dozen primitive camping sites in the backcountry and along the Green and Nolin Rivers. The rivers trace through the park and offer a wealth of recreational opportunities. Take a canoe out looking for wildlife, springs and river bluffs, or fish for bluegill, catfish, bass, and other game fish. There are more than 70 miles of backcountry trails through forested Kentucky hills for hikers, horseback riders, and bicyclists. That is only a taste of the region’s attractions, and Murray is right in the middle of it all. Additionally, there are several major cities within easy driving distance, so town residents are never far away from major concerts or events. It’s a small town with access to whatever you need without the drawbacks of big city life. O

CLIMATE Oh, What A Beautiful Morning! “If you don’t like the weather, wait fifteen minutes.” hat quotation, often attributed to Mark Twain, is also often used to describe Kentucky weather. Well, Twain was talking about weather in New England – not Kentucky. If he had spent much time here, he would have learned that, as fickle as weather may be, Kentucky weather is pretty stable and, for most of the year, very predictable.

T

Murray is fortunate enough to enjoy four distinct seasons. The summers are ideal for enjoying outdoor activities such as golf or boating on nearby Kentucky Lake, and the autumn colors are breathtaking to behold. Murray usually does not experience extreme weather conditions such as severe heat or blizzards although Murray was recently the victim of a pretty severe ice storm. Still, the fact that it made national news tells you how uncommon it is, and sleds, snowmobiles and skis usually get pretty dusty before they’re used. Officially, the climate is considered “humid subtropical.” Summer time in west Kentucky is usually humid with temperatures averaging 85 to 90°F. The summer heat usually peaks in late July, with very few, if any, 100°F+ days. A rare heat wave in 2007 broke several record highs for two weeks in the month of August. Snow is not rare in west Kentucky, but the area probably receives less than any other part of the state. Snow usually falls between the first of December and about the first of March. Most snowstorms do not produce anymore than two or three inches of snow, but occa-

sional storms can dump six inches or more. One atypical storm did happen in the winter of 2002-03 when Murray received 24" of snow, about three times the norm. Murray gets about 53 inches of rain per year (US average is 37). There are around 107 days with any measurable precipitation. Of course, that means that there are more than 250 days with no rain, snow, sleet or hail. That figure makes Murray a popular golf destination, even in winter. So, if you don’t like the weather, you must be living somewhere else! O

Nationally, Where to Retire magazine featured Murray in a cover story in 2007, naming it a "low-cost haven." In 2001, Murray was selected as one of only eight cities in the state as a Certified Retirement Community by the Kentucky Tourism Development Cabinet. RetirementAmerica.com also rated Murray highly saying "If you are seeking a wellrounded community with plenty of outdoor recreation, low housing costs with a four season climate, then Murray may be just what you're looking for." The cost of living indices are based on a US average of 100. Murray’s overall score of 76 is much cheaper than the US average.

DEVELOPMENT Takin’ Care of Business urray is a thriving community with outstanding existing industry, including Briggs & Stratton, Pella Windows, Kenlake Foods, and more. The city’s assets include low crime, affordable housing, excellent public school systems and cutting edge telecommunication services. Taken together, those qualities make the area one of the best locations for leading companies searching for that “just right” fit.

M

Murray has weathered the current economic storm with strength and has one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country. Several factors combine to help buffer Murray against the economic plight that has hit the rest of the country. In fact, says Mark Manning of the Economic Development Corporation (EDC), only Lexington has a lower unemployment rate in Kentucky.

“One of the best locations for leading companies searching for that “just right” fit.“

Mark Manning and the EDC try to ensure the economic security of the region. With a newly-completed industrial park north of the city, Murray is once again configured for growth. “If someone is going to move here, they need a place or a building. We were out of resources,” said Mark, “until the new park was finished. We’re ready now.” Murray State University is a major contributor to the area’s economic strength. The state funded facility provides a strong buffer for the local economy. One of the largest employers in the entire region, MSU also provides a highly educated workforce to the area. The Murray-Calloway County Hospital also presents a powerful economic force for the city. “The City, the County, Murray State, the Chamber and the medical community – they all work together to

DEVELOPMENT make Murray and Calloway County more attractive to prospective business and industry,” says Mark Manning. “I have never been let down when it comes to getting support for a new industry; we all pull together, and it’s impressive.” Perhaps Murray’s greatest defense against the economic woes of the rest of the country is the city’s great diversity. No single entity or industry dominates the economy. In addition to the University and the hospital, there are multiple manufacturing facilities creating such varied commodities as lawnmowers, windows, chemicals and scoreboards. The retail sector is strong and varied with smaller, locally grown businesses as well as national chains. With Calloway County’s origins firmly rooted in farming, agriculture continues to be a dominant part of the economic culture. Murray has its own micro-economy.

“I have never been let down when it comes to getting support for a new industry; we all pull together, and it’s impressive.” The news isn’t simply about survival, though. Murray is always looking at growth. Six of the city’s most important industries have been here since the year 1999. The area’s population has increased dramatically along with university enrollment. As the country recovers, Murray is in a good position to

move forward and grow. “We’re in good shape,” Mark Manning cautions, “When the national economy begins to recover, Murray will be in excellent shape to compete for new projects.” He believes that Murray’s industry will make even stronger contributions to the community and foster growth for everyone. Murray has much to offer potential business and industry. The quality of life and cost of living are both excellent in this rural town. Factor in the educated local workforce, lower taxes, centralized geographic location and transportation access and you can see why Murray is a fertile setting for development. O

TRANSPORTATION Come Fly (and drive, and float) With Me ocated just six miles northwest of downtown Murray is one of the area’s best kept secrets. Kyle-Oakley Field is Murray’s municipal airport and it is one of the city’s great treasures. The airport is there for the community though many citizens have not been out to see it. The business community knows all about it, however. Several businesses have credited the airport with being a major influence in setting up shop in Murray. A number of local businesses have planes hangared at Kyle-Oakley Field on a full time basis.

L

In 1957 the Murray Jaycees undertook the project to create an airport to promote growth and progress for the local community. The airport was approved for construction and Governor Bert T. Combs dedicated the Airport in an opening ceremony in 1961. The airport has grown continually for the last fifty years. The original airstrip was 3,000 feet, but today, after several expansions, the airstrip is 6,200 feet, long enough to welcome various medium sized aircraft. The terminal building was expanded three years ago. The building has a spacious meeting room for pilots and clients to use along with a pilot’s lounge. Ten new T-hangars were added in 2008, bringing the airport’s total to 48, and there’s still a waiting list, which shows just how popular the facility is for local pilots and businesses. This year the airport installed a new automated weather observation system, or AWOS.

38

Numerous services are available at Kyle-Oakley Field. The fueling facility lets pilots buy 100LL, Jet-A, and even auto fuel, a rarity for general aviation (GA) airports. Cardinal Aviation provides flight instruction, maintenance and even rentals. Tours are provided for school groups and Leadership Murray. You can even use the Otis G. Erwin Airstrip for remote control flying. Perhaps the field’s greatest asset is pilot and airport manager Johnny Parker. He’s been in charge since 1974 and the airport wouldn’t be the gem it is today without him. Johnny takes a tremendous amount of pride in the airport and it truly shows. The spotless

TRANSPORTATION terminal building is a warm welcome center to pilots and passengers from all across the country. “It is an economic development tool second to none and a model for the entire GA community,” Parker says of the airport. “You’ve got somebody who’s never been to Murray coming in through here, and you want to make sure you make that good first impression.” The airport does indeed make a great first impression. People anticipating the typical dingy, small airports are blown away by the exceptional quality of Kyle-Oakley Field. PUBLIC SAFETY Safe At Home eginning in January of this year, the Calloway County Sheriff's Office has a new facility in Murray. The new site, which will be named the Calloway County Public Safety Building, more than doubles the available space of the old office. Sheriff Bill Marcum said “I'm real excited about getting in and think it will be a great benefit to the community.” The additional space allows them to expand the 911 communications system and enlarge the dispatch room with new and improved equipment. Two new report rooms will be available in the new building for people to come in and file reports and the coroner’s office will relocate from the courthouse. Most importantly, the new site has room for the department to grow. All services offered at the Sheriff's Office have moved, including vehicle inspections and tax collection.

EMERGENCY NUMBERS

B

While the location is new to the Sheriff’s Office, it has been a part of Murray’s public services for years. The building was constructed in 1952 and originally housed the Calloway County Health Department. The site became available when the health department received a grant to build a new facility in the south part of town. Judge Larry Elkins noted “We had to do minimum work on it, mainly painting and cleaning.” The improvement to both facilities is a welcome upgrade for Murray’s public services. O

AGRICULTURE The Bounty of the County he economies of Murray and Calloway County are clearly moving boldly into the future. However, they take great pride in their agricultural roots. Look beyond the modern University and the technology start-ups and you’ll see the heart of an agricultural community. Today modern farms blaze new trails in farming technology alongside organic farms dedicated to preserving the traditions of their fathers and grandfathers who built this region. Murray agriculture has that attractive blend of tradition and innovation that is so important to any industry.

T

Calloway County has been a productive environment for agriculture ever since it was founded in 1822. The soils were particularly fertile and well adapted to the growth of Gold Leaf Tobacco, a high demand crop. At one time, there were as many as 15 tobacco factories here. While you can still find some tobacco grown here, the agricultural index has broadened significantly to include a wide variety of crops like corn, soybeans, berries, and myriad vegetables. Pay a visit to Hillyard Field Organics and you’ll discover an incredible array of organically grown fruits and vegetables ready to fill your kitchen with the best flavors that nature can provide. This family owned, certified organic farm offers Farmers Market users, local restaurants and fine dining restaurants organic produce starting in May and continuing through the

fall. Each season, owners Brad and Karly Lowe sow new seeds the old way. Mule drawn equipment replaces the tractor when applicable during the growing season for cultivation. Cover crops, large-scale composting, beneficial interplanting and insects provide organic protection throughout the growing season for their three acre farm. Thirteen bee hives offer customers local honey throughout the season and necessary pollination. Even as Hillyard Field honors the past with their methods, TapLogic is swiftly moving ahead with theirs. TapLogic is a local agricultural technology company that created a system called FarmLogic that is changing the way agricultural businesses operate. FarmLogic is a web-based software/hardware system that provides mobile data collection and storage for farmers, farm managers and agriculture service providers. It’s a comprehensive tool for tracking crops from seed to sale. FarmLogic allows farmers and sup-

AGRICULTURE pliers real-time access to farming operation data anytime, anywhere. TapLogic is the creation of lifelong farmer and entrepreneur Hoyt Choate. Hoyt and his wife, Renee, moved to Murray 13 years ago looking for the right place to explore some of their innovative ideas for agriculture. Hoyt has business interests in Kentucky, Tennessee and Missouri, and Choate Land Management manages 15,000 acres of Mississippi Valley farmland. He serves as President of four other companies, including AgForest Partners, Upstream, Streamside Resource Management and Underground Cable, Inc. When someone with Hoyt’s vast business experience moves to Murray to create a start-up, it’s worth taking notice. This area provides several benefits, including the advantage of being a centralized geographic location. Representatives from TapLogic can easily drive to trade shows in any direction, from Texas to the northeast. For what is traditionally viewed as a small community, shipping and transportation to any location in the country has never been more accessible, bringing the world to our doors. Murray State University has a highly rated agriculture department that is producing some incredible and eager talent. Three of the five members of TapLogic’s executive board are former Murray State students (the other two members are Hoyt and Renee themselves). Graduates from Murray State’s agriculture program take their knowledge all over the country, but a number also stay in the region and work on the farms that have been in their family for generations. Here the roots of agriculture run deep and strong. For business, industry, education and the quality of life, those roots form a firm foundation. O w w w. m y m u r r a y. c o m

THE CHAMBER Who Do We Think We Are? he Murray-Calloway County Chamber of Commerce was organized and incorporated in June 1926. Twenty-one businessmen were present to speak of the need for an organization to represent business in the city and county. The Chamber originally functioned as a fully volunteer organization. In June 1934 the Chamber was reorganized and an Executive Director was named.

T

Organized to advance the general welfare and prosperity of the Murray and Calloway area so that its citizens and all areas of its business community could prosper, the Chamber has always been funded by industry, business, organizational and individual memberships. Nearly 85 years later, the focus of the MurrayCalloway Chamber of Commerce has not changed, although the roles and responsibilities have grown.

Today it is committed to advancing the economic prosperity of the area by partnering with its members to provide representation, increase job opportunities, encourage community pride and improve the quality of life. The Chamber is heavily involved in finding new businesses to move to Murray that fit our demographic area. It also offers members special networking opportunities such as the Business @ Breakfast and an Annual Dinner. Lance Allison, Executive Director, is charged with managing the overall operation of the Chamber as directed by the 15-member Board of Directors. Lance comes from a small business background having worked in and owned a local photography studio since 1990. Lisa Satterwhite, Sales & Marketing Specialist, is responsible for marketing and promotion efforts of our member businesses and organizations. Cindy Chrisman-Veach, Administrative Assistant, is in charge of the various day to day customer service duties at the Commerce Centre. The Chamber Awards Each year at the Annual Dinner the chamber bestows recognition on its members who have gone above and beyond for their own business as well as the community. DEDICATION To Tommy Rushing, Our Friend

W

2008 Chamber of Commerce dinner. The recipient of the Chamber’s Citizen of the Year Award is chosen through nominations from Chamber members. Once nominations are received, the Citizens of the Year from the past three years choose the recipient. Mayor Rushing received 99 percent of the nominations.

“Tom Rushing always said that Murray was the best place you could ever be. Well, there’s one place that’s better, and that’s where he is now.”

He would do anything for his beloved hometown, from racing County Judge-Executive Larry Elkins down 16th Street in a soapbox derby car, to wearing a kilt at the West Kentucky Highland Games. The outpouring of pride in his life was abundant during the days and weeks following his passing. Kenny Darnell of Murray’s Rotary Club may have put it best: “Tom Rushing always said that Murray was the best place you could ever be. Well, there’s one place that’s better, and that’s where he is now.”

e invite you to join the Chamber and the Murray-Calloway County community in remembering our friend, Tom Rushing, who was serving as Mayor when he was suddenly taken from us in the autumn of 2009. Tommy was born in Murray in a day when kids could be kids, and he retained a spirit of youth to the last day.

– Kenny Darnell

“My dad, who died while I was still quite young, was involved in city government. I remember many things he told me, but one that stood out was, ‘If you ever grow up, you need to serve Murray—it’s a great place to live.’” That sentiment stuck with Tom Rushing throughout his life. He graduated from Murray State University, where he played baseball and was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity. He became an educator at the old Faxon School, working in the county for 10 years, nine of which he served as principal. He later joined the ranks of the banking industry, and was a well-known figure as a lending officer and an engaged member of the community. After 15 years as a city commissioner—many of them as the Mayor Pro Tem—he entered the race for Mayor. Without opposition, he took office with widespread public support. No community ever had a more dedicated or vocal supporter than Tommy Rushing. As revered as he was by friends, former students, voters and colleagues, he never took the credit for himself. “But, it’s not me,” he told an interviewer in 2008. “We have a great group of employees, from the Manager to the Street Department, utilities workers—those are the people who do the job.” In a lifetime of memories, one of his proudest was when he was announced as Citizen of the Year at the

To Tom Rushing, our leader and our friend, this magazine is affectionately dedicated. We hope it will help the reader to understand why this community meant so much to Tommy, and why it might mean just as much to you. O
