Giving Back to the Community Because She Matters Campaign A new focus on breast cancer early prevention at Murray-Calloway County Hospital is encouraging women to be a part of the Because She Matters campaign.

With the latest technology including tomosynthesis and molecular breast imaging, cancer detection rates are expected to increase from 1.2% to 8.2%. The best protection is early detection, thus increasing the importance for the latest technological advances. Phase 1 of the Because She Matters campaign will encourage others to give towards the $500,000 initiative focused on tomosynthesis. Advantages of the tomosynthesis technology include the following: earlier detection of small breast cancers, greater accuracy in pinpointing size, shape and location of abnormalities, fewer false positives and unnecessary biopsies, and greater likelihood of detecting multiple breast tumors.

This is a great opportunity for the community to make a difference locally, we need everyone’s support to make this a reality, Keith Travis, VP of Development

As a part of the campaign, the Murray Calloway Endowment for Healthcare has set up mobile cause so that anyone can make a donation to the Because She Matters campaign by simply texting “Matters” to 91999. All donations will go directly towards the purchase of tomosysnthesis for Murray-Calloway County Hospital’s mammography department.

Donor Highlight Music & Memory Program The Murray Calloway Endowment for Healthcare was presented with a $5,000 donation from Dr. Dick Weaver in memory of his wife, Dr. Jan Weaver. Jan was the first female dean for the College of Education at Murray State University, and a resident of Spring Creek Healthcare who suffered with dementia and passed away in 2009. Dr. Weaver’s donation will continue to support the Dr. Jan Weaver Music and Memory program at Spring Creek Health Care. This program supports the training of five employees who have recently completed their Music & Memory Training Certification allowing them to work with dementia and Alzheimer patients by providing high quality, person-centered care through digital music technology. These employees will identify those residents who could benefit from the program and work with them to provide IPods with personalized playlists tailored for each one.

MCCH’s policy is to provide medically necessary care to all patients regardless of their ability to pay. Incomes up to 225% of the federal poverty level are eligible for 100% financial assistance. A minimum of 30% assistance is available for incomes up to 375% of the federal poverty level.

MCCH’s policy is to provide medically necessary care to all patients regardless of their ability to pay.

Bad Debt: $2.9 million

Some individuals with incomes may not qualify for charity care. Even if covered by insurance, they may have high deductible or limited benefits. Bad debt occurs when patients do not pay hospital charges for which payment was expected. The hospital works with patients to identify financial assistance eligibility and offers liberal payment plans.

Medicaid and Medicare Losses

Kentucky’s Medicaid program provides health coverage to qualifying individuals. In Kentucky, Medicaid pays the hospital and average of 85 cents for every dollar the hospital spends to provide care for these recipients. The Medicare program pays the hospital an average of 92 cents for each dollar MCCH spends on care for Medicare recipients.

Community Benefit Activities: $250,000

In an effort to promote health, MCCH hosts and participates in free health fairs, screening events, and educational programs throughout the region. We partner with organizations to provide clinical training and education to advance the knowledge of those seeking healthcare careers, participate in research, and strive to improve access to and quality of care.

Comforting Care…includes taking a ride in our little red wagon! Thanks to a donation from the endowment, pediatric patients undergoing surgery will now take a ride in a little red wagon before being transferred on to the surgical bed. The Murray Calloway Endowment for Healthcare recently received a generous $45,000 donation from the Zweedyk family of Hardin, KY. The donation was made in memory of Dutch Zweedyk to purchase 145 new televisions for the hospital. The Zweedyk family has made several donations to the Endowment and begin their contributions by building custom bird houses and selling them with proceeds benefitting Hospice. “I want to help people out and give my money to charities, I am happy to support the hospital,” said Kay Zweedyk.
