WELCOME We welcome you to Kentucky’s Western Waterland, home of the largest body of water between the Great Lakes and the Gulf of Mexico—the canal-connected Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley! Combine the lakes with the Ohio, Cumberland, Tennessee, and Mississippi Rivers to find a virtual playground of recreation in the 15 counties of western Kentucky. WHY COME to Western Kentucky?

KENTUCKY LAKE It’s hard to imagine a lake with 160,000 acres of water and 2,380 miles of shoreline. But picture this . . . you can fish, swim, ski, tube, sail, drag race and more importantly relax on the lake. While relaxing, tune in Great Oldies on 99.1 to take you back to the day. Kentucky Lake is the second largest manmade lake in the U.S. where you can fish for catfish, crappie, bluegill, white bass, sauger, stripers, and smalland large-mouth bass. Because Kentucky Lake is located on a major waterfowl migration route, over 450,000 waterfowl winter here. Kentucky Lake was created in 1944 when the Tennessee Valley Authority completed the dam on the Tennessee River at Gilbertsville for flood control and generation of hydro-electric power. All of this fun is just a great by-product!

The Tennessee Valley Authority purchased all of the land between the two lakes, the canal on the north, and US Hwy 79 in northern Tennessee and created the nation’s largest in-land peninsula—the 170,000 acre, magnificent National Recreation Area, Land Between The Lakes (LBL). Today LBL is managed by the USDA Forest Service.

LAKE BARKLEY Lake Barkley runs approximately parallel to Kentucky Lake. The US Army Corps of Engineers dammed the Cumberland River at Lake City approximately 20 years after Kentucky Lake was constructed. Lake Barkley covers 57,600 acres at summer pool and has over 1,000 miles of shoreline. It was also constructed for flood control and generation of hydro-electric power. While the lake is best known for its spring crappie runs, catfish and game fish such as large- and small-mouth bass can be caught year-round. Since Lake Barkley is shallower than Kentucky Lake, different techniques must be employed while fishing for the same species. However, the same recreational opportunities exist on both lakes.

In Western Kentucky the roads running the bluffs above the Mississippi River have been designated as part of the Great River Road National Scenic Byway. Throughout history, the Mississippi River influenced many lives: Native American cultures; early French voyagers; African-Americans seeking freedom on the Underground Railroad; and many more. Through its charming river towns and metropolitan cities, historic sites and cultural artifacts, today's Great River Road still links resources, people, and history. While driving this scenic route, stop at ColumbusBelmont State Park to learn more about the Trail of Tears and the US Civil War and to camp on the bluff over the Mississippi River, arguably the most beautiful campground along the Mississippi River. Further north, visit Wickliffe Mounds State Historic Site to learn about the culture of the Mississippian Indians.

CHEROKEE TRAIL OF TEARS NATIONAL HISTORIC TRAIL In 1838, the United States government forcibly removed more than 16,000 Cherokee Indian people from their homelands in Tennessee,

Alabama, North Carolina, and Georgia, sending them on a long, and, for many, deadly march to “Indian Territory” in what is today Oklahoma. This tragic chapter in American and Cherokee history became known as the Trail of Tears, today commemorated as a 4,900-mile National Historic Trail crossing nine states. Kentucky‘s section of the trail is all found in western Kentucky and includes eight certified sites that can be visited. These sites are in northern Livingston County near the Ohio River, Trail of Tears Park in Hopkinsville, Princeton, Fredonia, Guthrie, Columbus, and between Pembroke and Trenton. AMISH COMMUNITY Near Marion is the largest Amish Community in Kentucky. While driving in this rural area, you may encounter a slow-moving, black, horse-drawn buggy bearing bonneted women and girls and brimmed straw hat-wearing men and boys. Visiting there is like taking a step back in time, as the Amish have no telephones or electricity and use horses and buggies for transportation. They meticulously care for the land and are skilled craftsmen and artisans in baking and other crafts. Marion helps promote its Amish neighbors by linking them with visitors eager to encounter members of this highly conservative religious group and buy their handmade quilts, mums, gourds, produce, flowers, and furniture.

MURRAY Murray in 2012 was voted the “Friendliest Small Town in America” and is home to the nationally recognized Murray State University.

US News & World Report has called it a “Top Tier” university in academic quality for 23 consecutive years. Way to go MSU!

Mantle Rock JOY • Just off KY 133 near Joy: Mantle Rock

is a natural rock arch formation spanning 188 feet in width and 30 feet in height under or near which thousands of Cherokees sought shelter and hundreds perished during the winter of 1838-39 when the United States relocated the Cherokee from their homeland in the Smokey Mountains to Oklahoma. Today this sacred site, owned and managed by the Nature Conservancy, is a Native American Historical Landmark and lies along the Trail of Tears National Historic Trail across Western Kentucky.

Visit the site to hike a portion of the Trail of Tears and to view Mantle Rock.

The most vulnerable area in the Confederate defensive line in the Western Theater was the state of Kentucky. The Tennessee, Cumberland, and Mississippi rivers were potential avenues for a Union invasion of the South through Kentucky and into Tennessee and beyond. In the fall of 1861 Confederate General Polk fortified the bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River at Columbus, Kentucky. He had earthwork forts surrounded by infantry trenches, 17,000 soldiers, 90 large cannon, 50 smaller field cannon, land mines, river mines, and a mile-long chain of twenty-pound links, supported by barges that stretched across the river from Belmont, Missouri to Columbus, Kentucky and held in place by a six-ton anchor buried inside the fort.

The Confederates proudly called Columbus the “Gibraltar of the West.” In addition, Confederate forces built three forts on the Cumberland and Tennessee Rivers in southern Kentucky and northern Tennessee to defend the two rivers.

In January 1862, General U.S. Grant went around Columbus and took all three forts on the Cumberland and Tennessee Rivers, opening passage for his supply ships.

Outflanked, Columbus was abandoned by General Polk in March 1862. Columbus was immediately occupied by Union forces and became an important military river and railroad supply depot for the rest of the Mississippi River.

Columbus Belmont State Historic Park showcases the anchor, links from the mile-long chain, cannons, earthworks, and a Civil War Museum.

Important sites to visit that are listed in Attractions are: Columbus-Belmont State Park in Columbus; Jefferson Davis Monument State Historic Site in Fairview; Market House Museum in Paducah; Tilghman House & Civil War Museum in Paducah; Paducah Wall to Wall Murals; War Memorial Walking Trail in Oak Grove; Crittenden County Historical Museum in Marion; Barlow House Museum in Barlow; and the Hickman County Museum in Clinton. In addition, there are numerous monuments and battlefields scattered throughout western Kentucky.

No matter if you want to spend a relaxing few days fishing on some of the best lakes and rivers in the country, or a long weekend hiking or biking along our many trails, or even just a couple of days hunting in one of our many public wildlife management areas . . . outdoor recreational opportunities are all around you. You can watch eagles and osprey, play golf, cruise on one of our scenic waterways, ride horses or ATV's, go kayaking or backpacking, or go camping at one of our many campgrounds. The true outdoors is all right here at your fingertips.

FISH, FISH AND MORE FISH Kentucky’s reputation for superb fishing draws more than 150,000 out-of-state anglers each year. Best known for quality fishing on Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley, western Kentucky caters to the needs of fishermen who flock here to catch “the big one.” Many different sport fish species can be found in western Kentucky. The most commonly fished are:

Largemouth Bass The biggest fish of the year are taken in the early spring as spawn begins and the fish are close to the shorelines. The largest quantities of bass are commonly taken during April and May. In summer, fish concentrate on the drop-offs and creek channels during midday. However, some action can be found in the shallows at early morning and late evening. Fall brings a return of spring patterns. Largemouth can also be found chasing the abundant schools of baitfish that are normally found on the main lake near the points. They will move back to drop-offs during the winter, but a few mild days may entice them into the shallows for feeding.

Smallmouth Bass Considered to be the best fighter when hooked, this species is found in large concentrations in both lakes. These spring spawners closely follow the patterns of largemouth bass during spring and summer, with the largest numbers being caught in April and May. During the fall and winter they prefer the deep, rocky banks.

Kentucky (Spotted) Bass Abundant populations of this fighter are found along the main lakes and major tributaries. Following many of the spring and summer patterns of the largemouth, they can also be found schooling near baitfish. During mid-fall, they will return to shallow waters, especially near wood structures.

They will hang near the drop-offs in winter.

White & Black Crappie—In early spring they are found along shallow drop-offs and near shore where cover is available. As the water temperatures rise, crappie move into the

shallows to spawn. March, April, and May yield the biggest catches and offer the heaviest activity, with the spawn generally occurring near the middle of April. As summer approaches they will seek the cooler areas around the drop-offs, but will reappear in the fall around structures and shorelines with cover. The colder months will make them a little sluggish, but nice catches are still very possible on creek channels near the mouth of bays, especially after 2-3 days of moderate weather.

Catfish—Catfish are primarily bottom feeders, which is one reason they pack in below the dams at Lock 51, Smithland, Kentucky Lake, and Lake Barkley.

As water temperatures warm, catfish move into creek and river channels, and can be taken at shallower depths. At night or on overcast days, fishing around rocky cover on flats near the main-lake channel is a good choice anywhere along the course of either lake. Outside bends in the main lake channel, where the old channel pushes close to the banks of the main lake to create a bluff, are predictably good locations for catfish. Virtually every cove in the lakes supports plenty of channel catfish, along with small blues. The best summer fishing in the coves occurs after dark, when the channel cats move shallow and get more active.

Bluegill—Located all over the lakes, bluegill spawn in late spring and concentrate in timber and brush during April and May. During summer, and even late fall, they can be found near almost every dock and tree with the larger of the species being deeper. They will often keep these patterns as late as December, growing sluggish in January.

White Bass Tremendous schools of these fish make annual runs to upper reaches of the main tributaries each spring. During the summer months, large schools chase shad and minnows on the surface of the main lake. Trolling with deep divers or spoons along the edges of the

main river channel will also produce large catches. During the fall months, they are more difficult to locate but will occasionally show some surface activity. White bass tend to frequent deep flats in late fall, but will move to the deeper main lake points during the winter months.

Striped Bass & Rockfish—These species concentrate below the dams in the swift tailwaters. Using live bait, jigs, and Rapala-type lures will produce the best results in the spring. Summer patterns are very similar, but also try trolling with a very deep diving lure. Rockfish are more active in the fall.

Switch to a larger bait, 6 to 8 inches, and watch for surfacing fish. During the winter months, the activity will slow as the water temperature falls. Use smaller baits at this time of year.

Carp—Carp are considered worthless for either sport or food and do not even make good bait fish.

However, bow fishing for large carp has become an exciting night-time, year-round activity in western Kentucky. Don't forget that a fishing license is required for this sport.

They and the many other area guides provide the boat, tackle, bait, and knowledge of where the fish are biting.

HUNTING Kentucky’s growing deer herd and turkey flock mean this season will be one of the best years ever to go hunting in the state. Kentucky has 1.6 million acres of land open to the public for hunting—so you don’t have to own a farm to enjoy a day afield. Kentucky has one of the

OUTDOORS country’s highest concentrations of trophy deer in the country. In 2013 Outdoor Life magazine ranked Kentucky as the best whitetail state.

Modern gun season for deer opens in November, while archery season begins in September and runs through January. Kentucky also has spring and fall seasons for turkey. Some of the best hunting in the state is found on public land. Several of these areas are managed under a quota hunt system open to both

resident and non-resident hunters. You can apply for many of the quota hunts during the month of September by calling 877-598-2401.

Kentucky offers more than just deer and turkey.

FISHING/HUNTING LICENSE FEES

Western Kentucky has over 216,000 acres of wildlife management areas that are available for hunting, fishing, camping, hiking, and wildlife viewing. Visit KentuckyLakeBarkley.org and look for a table of all of the wildlife management areas under Hunting. This table includes the phone numbers to call for information and permits. Land Between The Lakes offers more than 230 days of hunting opportunities each year. Turkey, deer, small game, and waterfowl are the most sought after game, but remember to contact them about applications and permits at (270) 924-2065.

TRAILS Western Kentucky has an almost unlimited opportunity for hiking and biking. In addition to all of the trails in Land Between The Lakes and the numerous Wildlife Management Areas, all of the state parks have trails and most of the western Kentucky communities have walking/biking/ hiking trails of varying degrees of difficulty.

Enjoy a walk through the woods at Exit 31 off I-24 or take a leisurely stroll around Oak Grove’s War Memorial Walking Trail at Exit 86 off I-24.
